According to Andrews' doctor, "The prognosis is very good that he will return to play after an appropriate rehabilitation program."

Too little, too late? I guess we'll have to wait until training camp 2010...

OUCH! That might have been even worse than the first thing you said. Well done.

Good news for Shawn

Get well soon Shawn. Best of luck to you and good luck in rehab.

I've given up.

He’s an afterthought at this point. Both Andrews brothers, really. Huge disappointments this season.

I still love to drool about the possibility of Peters, Herremans, Jackson, Andrews, and Andrews on our OL next year. DAMN that sounds sexy

by MalibuLSV23 on Dec 3, 2009 5:57 PM EST reply actions

No.

Stacy would be lucky if he is still on the team next year and Justice just signed a big contract to be our starting RT for years to come. That O-line possibility sounded “sexy” in the preseason but it sure as hell ain’t anymore. Save your saliva.

there is no way in hell that stacy is somewhere else next year

he just signed a huge contract and barely played this year recovering from his knee surgery

if u meant shawn, then i could possibly see ur point but i still think if he can play the eagles will kick his tires at least

His contract was not guaranteed for this year(or at least not much of it), they can cut him after the season and not take much of a cap hit. It has been over a year since the ACL injury and Stacy has shown NOTHING that he can be good, not even a flash. I wouldn’t mind him getting another chance next season, but would prefer using a high draft pick on a stud RG out of college. That said, you could never have enough depth on the O-line.

He tore his ACL in December and that means he de facto couldn’t lift or run until March. Losing half an offseason can really destroy you.

GIVE THE MAN A BREAK. You watch, he’ll be here next year.

My feeling is we need to use our high draft picks on the defense this year. LB and DB mostly. Safety play has been pretty bad in my opinion.

I do agree the O-line needs some work as well though, but I think we have options there.

by Clyde Simmons on Dec 4, 2009 10:28 AM EST up reply actions

I also wouldn’t mind seeing either a DT, or a DE drafted. But now I just named every position on the defense lol.

by Clyde Simmons on Dec 4, 2009 10:29 AM EST up reply actions

If we keep him for next year, we could have a grossly overpaid backup. I say cut him at the end of the year. Try Shawn at RG, if that doesnt work we still have MJG.

by philiafan14364 on Dec 4, 2009 3:48 PM EST up reply actions

The way Eagles fans treat Shawn is reminiscent of how Mr. Justice was handled by the masses

His bout of depression was frustrating, yes. But if he needed another entire back procedure, I don’t see how anyone can still pout over him not playing.

The bottom line is, he has until July to get better. He’s used up all of his remaining goodwill, but damned-be-those-who-scorn if he was telling the truth about his back the whole time. He’s still on the roster; I might as well give him the benefit of the doubt until then.

Stacy’s an entirely different story, however. Stacy blows.

by cwel87 on Dec 3, 2009 6:21 PM EST reply actions

I am not a doctor or anything but I think these guys can both come back.

Why would they have back surgery if nothing was wrong with his back?

I hope they are willing to do the work to get back where they were. I don’t know them personally or anything, but I think these guys don’t have a Type A competitive personality and I think that is a major factor why they are not playing. That could also be an indicator of their futures as well.

Who wouldn’t want him back? I know I would. He has/had a ton of talent.

by topcat6 on Dec 3, 2009 6:56 PM EST reply actions

hopefully this finally corrects whatever has been wrong with his back for so long.

by JasonB on Dec 3, 2009 7:01 PM EST reply actions

back problems are so hard to recover from

being his size and having to keep the weight on

i know ive been hard on him, and still am, but i do hope he fully recovers and becomes the powerhouse we remember he was a few years back

that being said, i still think he went about this whole thing the completely wrong way. saying he is fine and smokin and jokin and all that bs, then downplaying his reinjury before he went on IR again, and now finally getting surgery after being put on IR in september. just doesnt smell right at all to me

RIP JJ & HK
Just fucking win. (as said by LegendKnight22)

by BadCo'09 on Dec 3, 2009 7:25 PM EST up reply actions

The question is WHY didnt he get the surgery earlier? Explain to me why you go IR then 4 months later decide to have surgery. WHY now? There is no rush to get back onto the field. He would rather sit on his ass then play. Come out to the media and say something Andrews! Can you tell me publicly why you are delaying yourself to play? YOU have no heart. Im calling you out!

by MalibuLSV23 on Dec 3, 2009 7:50 PM EST reply actions

Remember he went to Cali for the rehab and it wasn’t diagnosed till late that he needed to have a second surgery. Then they determined that it be best if he had a second surgery so he went and had one. This wasn’t all done till late. If anything blame it on the slow diagnosis from the doctors and not Shawn.

can someone tell me

What the surgery is supposed to fix. All I have been hearing is that his back is hurt, and hes getting surgery on his back. Your back is a pretty big region. that’s not a whole lot better than saying he is just hurt in general.

I believe his first surgery was a slipped disc..? is this for the same thing? a different slipped disc? or a different back injury in general?

Cus if its for the same slipped disc than I am not really holding out hope, thats pretty serious as far as I know. However, if its something different, than perhaps there is hope.

I'll try and explain

From what it sounds like it was deep muscle damage. There is a set of of 3 muscles along the spine underneath the latissimus dorsi. Those 3 muscles are called the erector spinae muscles. I would say he had somekind of internal damage done there or the other possibility was the damage is at the Quadratus lumborum which is just outside of the of the erector spinae muscles and attaches to the illuim of the pelvis. That’s where it sounds like the damage lies. Sounds like the damage was to the multifidus or interspinales of the muscles. But I don’t have X-rays so I can’t be 100%. That’s just what it sounds like.

by macjack09 on Dec 4, 2009 12:43 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Holy shit. You gotta be in Sports Med and I’m sure that comment was intentionally made to confuse us even more! lol

Andy Reid is 43-5 when running the ball at least 30 times in a game( Ray Diddy on Eagles Post Game Live after Bears Victory)

by Route36 on Dec 4, 2009 12:50 AM EST up reply actions

He didn't get me!

The problem with that kind of a muscle issue is his ability to extend, laterally flex, and ipsilaterally rotate on his spine (lehmen’s terms – bend the neck backwards, bend the neck to the side, twist the upper body to the right using muscles on the right) would have been severely compromised. So, pretty much, it makes perfect sense he would not have been able to complete the activities of an offensive lineman; additionally, it makes sense that there were some issues diagnosing it, because of his recent back surgery.

I don’t know exactly where his back surgery took place (upper or lower back), but depending on which of the erector spinae muscles they had to repair (the iliocostalis cervicis/thoracis/lumborum, the longissimus capitis/cervicis/thoracis, and the spinalis thoracis, if you’re at all curious!), we could be looking at a relatively quick recovery, or it could take a lot of time. I’d personally hedge my bets on him being ready for training camp, though.

mackjack, cwel

If what your saying was the problem. Hypothetically, how good are the chances of him returning, in your opinion?

by Tbot86 on Dec 4, 2009 11:28 AM EST up reply actions

There's potential for full recovery, and it usually takes anywhere between 8-14 months

But since he’s a professional athlete, that number could be sooner. All things considered, he’ll probably be physically fine by the time mandatory training camp rolls around.

I'm rooting for them both.

and that is Thinking only of the benefit to the team. When thinking of them as individuals – same thing. They should be happy with what they do on the field and off, surrounded by friends and family and appreciated by their co-workers and fans, just like anyone else. (Except for the fans part – my only fans are two cats, and that’s only right before I feed them.) I want to see them succeed and have no hard feelings against either of them even though I wish they were busting holes for the running backs right now.

i say stacy is gone…they can dump his contract on the cheap and they’ll try to plug shawn into the guard spot. this is all if it appears shawn is getting healthy. if shawn is still having bad problems next spring, they might keep stacy and give up on shawn.

by bula412 on Dec 4, 2009 3:26 AM EST reply actions

the front office can not go into next season depending on shawn. it seems like he would need to come in as a backup and impress the coaches to get himself back into the starting lineup. he needs to be the contingency plan.

'Fans,' yeah, right

We really are the most unsympathetic fans in the world. Last year we had about much esteem for Winston Justice as a head banger has for Barry Manilow. This year we’re quietly saying, ‘oops, maybe we misjudged him.’ It’s a physical game and when you’re a lineman trying to push around 350 lb bears, there’s no room for a weakness in your body. I understand Stacy’s concern for his future and not wanting to play unless his body (and mind) will let him. There’s no room for error. It doesn’t matter how badly we want those players out there, they are the professionals, they know far better what it takes than most of us. It doesn’t diminish their integrity or commitment as players, it just shows there’s a big difference between our own fantasies and tying on cleats and stepping out into the pit.

I sincerely hope both of the Andrew brothers heal fully and can come back to prove all of the you ‘fans’ wrong.

by D-Menace on Dec 4, 2009 12:49 PM EST reply actions

Domination

I believe Andy has an “eye” for talent, especially on the O-Line. His comment that Shawn may be the best talent at Tackle he’s ever seen coming out of college said a lot to me. Stacy is still recovering froim a major injury. After off season rehabilitation and learning the play book, I have high hopes for him in 2010. Shawn may start the year on the PUP list… we’ll see. But these two guys playing at the top of their game… motivating each other and playing for each other, would make a great story, and, potentially, the best right side of the OL we’ve ever seen in Phila. That’s what I’m rootin for, gentlemen, with us being able to refer to Justice in a year or two as “super-sub.”
