Study: Negative emotions key to enjoying sports

Which helps explain, of course, why Philadelphia is the #1 city to enjoy sports.  It seems that Banner, Reid, & Co. are only giving us what we deep down truly wanted throughout their years of emotional torture!

Read all about it here:  Don't be happy, be worried!

They found that fans of the winning team who, at some point during the game, were almost certain their team would lose, ended up thinking the game was the most thrilling and suspenseful.

"You don't want to be in a great mood during the whole game if you really want to enjoy it," said Silvia Knobloch-Westerwick, co-author of the study and associate professor of communication at Ohio State University.

"We found that negative emotions play a key role in how much we enjoy sports."

Huh???????????????

naw just kiddin, makes sense to me. These freakin games really are an emotional rollercoaster. Its funny how your emotions can literally go from jubilant to crushed in a matter of seconds. Thats wat makes it so great.

I bet you were worried before the game, no?

hmmm true.

but “You don’t want to be in a great mood during the whole game if you really want to enjoy it”. haha i was in a great mood all game and i enjoyed it throroughly. then again i guess that game is of a different caliber.

I think with fans like us, the next game starts about 2 milliseconds after the last game ends. Right now I’m really trying to suppress the images of Maclin muffing punts in the preseason, Trotter in coverage and more injuries on the D.
I’d really like a blowout this week, I’d really enjoy that.

lol exactly what I was thinking

That 44-6 eagles cowboys game on Dec. 29/2008 was the best game i've ever seen

Yeah, but...

You enjoy it so much because it was so good after seeing us stutter through games before

If every game was like that, would you enjoy it as much as you did?

by CPaulin on Dec 4, 2009 6:32 AM EST up reply actions

well obviously it was soo good because it was such insane circumstances. but if every game was like that we’d most likely have a superbowl, so yes i would enjoy it even more lol

I Love the Passion of Philly Fan

even though I am a Broncos fan, (I hope to go 8-4 this Sunday by smacking the Chiefs!) I do like all Philadelphia teams as well. Perhaps it’s because I’m Italian, like many Philadelphians are, but more than anything else, I think it’s seeing the passion Philly fan exhibits. I have to listen to Howard Eskin and Ike Reese weekly on WIP in the afternoons online at work. That Arthur fool that keeps calling in makes the show the best out of market program this side of Jim Rome. It will be fun seeing Allen Iverson back with the Sixers again as well.

Howard Eskin is not a good representation of our fan base he is an asshat and I don’t understand how people can tolerate his nonsense. As a die hard Eagles fan I almost NEVER agree with what he says and often find myself wondering if he actually routes for the team or for controversy.

Howard Roots For Controversy

he just loves to rile Philly fans up. When I called, long distance, he was a gentleman to me.

I Do Love Merril Reese Though

and listened every week before NFL.com eradicated its free audio when a team went into the red zone. I guess the shield wasn’t making enough money off of me giving me partially free audio?
