Eagles Clinch Berth, End 49ers Playoff Hopes 27-13

With a 27-13 win over the San Francisco 49ers, the Eagles have advanced to a 10-4 record and have clinched a playoff spot. Although Donovan McNabb and the defense looked shaky at times, there were several bright spots that allowed the Eagles to pull out a win:

  • DeSean Jackson eclipsed over 1,000 yards for the season with a 140 yard, 1 TD performance. He just barely missed breaking Elroy "Crazy Legs" Hirsch and Devin Hester's single season 50+ yard TD record with an overthrown pass by McNabb.
  • Asante Samuel helped with the turnover game, recovering a Sheldon Brown fumble and picking off Alex Smith. The Eagles defense picked off Smith three times over the course of the game.
  • Reserve linebacker Tracy White recorded his first career interception and provided good pressure when brought in on passing downs.
  • Trent Cole recorded two sacks, bringing his season total to 11.5. At the moment, he is tied for 5th most sacks in the NFL with the Colts' Dwight Freeney.
  • David Akers had a perfect day, completing both field goals and going 3/3 on extra points. He is currently holds the second-highest scoring total in the NFL behind the Chargers' Nate Kaeding.

FLY EAGLES FLY andy and mcnabb deliver again now lets go get this SUPER BOWL

by FLAeagle on Dec 20, 2009 7:57 PM EST reply actions

i have to say im really happy with this stretch. we were sputtering at 5-4 and it was looking like we were going nowhere, but we got it together for 5 straight. also a much better performance from the defense today, which i was very pleased with. it will be nice not having to rely on the raiders to get us in this season!

by eaglesinmd on Dec 20, 2009 8:01 PM EST reply actions

Hell yes. Part of me wanted to come here and bitch about the penalties, but a 5 game winning streak and a clinched playoff birth in week 15, I’ll take it.

penalties were pretty tame I thought

There’s plenty to bitch about but I’m pretty happy overall

E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!

by Joe_D on Dec 20, 2009 8:42 PM EST up reply actions

a) DeSean Jackson is the man. He should’ve had 200 yards and 2 TDs today. One blip in coverage and it’s either a huge play or a TD. That has to F with defenders heads.

b) I thought McNabb played his worst game of our 5 game winning stretch. He had 2 very uncharacteristic picks, and one that almost was pick 6 by Spencer. The one allowed SF to get back in the game. I don’t think he played bad, but not as tight as the other games. I’m just nit picking though since he did make some really nice throws most of the game.

c) Our defense came up huge with those turnovers. Samuel, Brown, and Joselio Hanson chased Smith around all night. Mikkel played well too and Trent the man Cole had some nice plays after being quiet last week. I’m really glad we found a way to get the speedster Tracy White a little role on D. We shut down Davis quite well too and I believe that was mostly due to the pressure we dialed up.

D) I like Demps as a return man. More speed and a bit more decisive than Harris

E) Is Weaver our starting RB now?

I’m just curious, I love our backfield right now, and I hope we keep an extensive platoon even when Westys back

if the vikings lose they would be one game ahead of philly in the #2 spot with identical conference records. its a longshot but still… after the loss to the chargers who expected us to be in this situation?

A few years back, I went to Bob Evans in Cherry Hill after an Eagles playoff win and Shawn Barber’s entire family was there. BS’ed and talked football with them for a good 10 minutes while we waited for tables. They probably thought I was annoying.

On a non-Eagle note, just a couple weeks ago, I was flying back from Honolulu and the entire Navy football team was in the airport. One of their scrawnier players was in line in front of me and said he wanted a bottle of Nyquil, but was concerned that he couldn’t bring liquids onto the plane. After calling him a rookie, I informed him that once you get past the security check, you can pretty much bring anything you buy onto the plane. I then asked him if he was the kicker, and he told me he was one of the medical guys, which made the cashier laugh. He too probably thought I was annoying.

One thing that worries me

Do you think Dawkins will have a significant advantage against Mcnabb because he practiced against him for so many years? I mean he’s already one of the most savvy safeties in the league, and adding that experience against McNabb has to help right?

by tanman5 on Dec 20, 2009 9:35 PM EST reply actions

I don't think so

Dawk is a legend and a fearsome hitter, but he’s not a huge threat as a coverage guy. On the other hand, I think we’ll have a field day with Orton.

Like a manic schizo . . .

Everybody said the season was over after the Oakland game and this team was 5-4 and now this team is going to the Super Bowl? Let’s see what happens the next two weeks and see how things unfold.

Not the crispiest victory by any stretch but the Eagles made more plays on both sides of the balls today than the 49ers. Bunch of key 49ers played poor games including Davis and Smith.

by MG77 on Dec 20, 2009 9:42 PM EST reply actions

Fans at the game today - F@cking disgraceful

It wasn’t that bad in the 1st half except when the 49ers stuffed the Eagles in the 4th quarter but in the 2nd half the amount of snowballs was ridiculous. People were just heaving them left and right and hitting plenty of Eagles’ fans in the process. Little kid in our section got hit by one that knocked him over and left him crying. It forced his dad to get up and take him to the restroom/possibly medical services.

Even some of the Eagles’ coaching staff came over to our section late in the 3rd quarter to ask the fans to stop throwing snow balls over the Eagles’ bench and one clever guy retorted “F@ck you.” He was removed by security soon afterwards as were several other fans in close range

I really hope these jokers lose their season tickets if they have them. Frankly, I don’t know about the upper level but the ground crew did a great job of removing most of the snow from the stadium.

by MG77 on Dec 20, 2009 9:49 PM EST reply actions

Coaching Staff Deserves Credit

They had a great defensive gameplan to put pressure on Alex Smith. OK, Gore had a nice day, but that was basically on two big runs. Our linebackers are suspect. I’ve said from day one that Chris Gocong still had trouble reading basic plays (like the difference between pass and run) and now he’s been beat out by a rookie picked on the second day. On offense, the coaches also called a great game by using max protect to give McNabb time. As for McNabb, OK he made two bad decisions that led to picks, but his first touchdown, was a thing of beauty – few, if any, QBs in the league could have done that. And his TD run was also sweet. Also, the 3rd-and-2 deep ball to DJax was a thing of beauty. This offense is pretty much unstoppable right now. And Maclin has been out the past two weeks. Also, give credit to the line, which had a great day in pass protection.

Not sure why . . .

The Niners didn’t show Jackson more respect today because they were tending to play their safeties up and only playing them back about 10-12 yards on most plays.

McNabb just missed Jackson in the 2nd half for six and their were 2 other times where McNabb didn’t see Jackson open deep with only the safety on him.

+1

I grew up loving baseball, but it’s turned into a 8 team league, with exhibition games thrown in the middle. It’s sad when 2/3 of the teams start the season absolutely knowing they will not win the world series.

In the NFL, there may be 8 teams that know they can’t win. Exactly the opposite.

Plus, the NFL works us up into a lather by playing only once a week.

The NFL is the king, no doubt about it.

by Bisch on Dec 21, 2009 12:06 AM EST up reply actions

The problem with baseball is the management

Too many old, bitchy white suits. They can’t comprehend change to save their lives.

The premier front offices (Boston, Tampa Bay, Seattle, Oakland) are slowly changing the game, but it will be a while before the quality of baseball catches back up to football. That, and there really needs to be a salary cap.

The more I think about it the more I like our chances of making a run in the playoffs. we have won 5 straight and are playing well. minnesota and new orleans have look vulnerable the last couple weeks

by eaglesinmd on Dec 20, 2009 11:29 PM EST reply actions

especially the saints..they dont even blow anybody out anymore..every game was like by a touch or field goal the past few weeks

by jjrome on Dec 20, 2009 11:40 PM EST up reply actions

here's the thing

we absolutely have a chance at the first round bye… as long as we win out we only need 1 loss from minnesota over the next 2 weeks since both of their games are conference games… that being said… if we beat denver next week and get to 11-4 with the cowboys next… that game is our season… I do not want to have to play anyone 2 weeks in a row… I don’t care where its played… I know we are in the playoffs but I think with the early bye week we definitely need the first round bye to make a deep run.

by Johnny G on Dec 21, 2009 12:06 AM EST reply actions

Andy Reid...

has never lost a first round playoff game, or first playoff game for that matter. The Eagles are in the playoffs, looking at history, they do not need the bye this year to make a deep playoff run. It would be nice, but definitely not necessary for a Reid coached team.

by PhilsForever on Dec 21, 2009 1:00 AM EST up reply actions

NO!

Let’s see what happened last year? We won two games and then came out sluggish against Arizona. Think an extra week of rest might have helped?

It’s not just about winning the first game. It’s about winning the Super Bowl and we have a WAY better chance of doing that if the team has to win 3 games with an extra week of rest instead of 4 straight games, all on the road.

by tanman5 on Dec 21, 2009 1:08 AM EST up reply actions

I disagree vehemently. We had a ton of momentum going into the playoffs having to fight for it as hard as we did. I don’t think we would’ve played as well if we were given the week off. In all honesty, I think the bye week advantage is overrated. The teams with the bye win more often because they’re better, not because they’re rested.

I am the people's troll :3™

by yomjoseki on Dec 21, 2009 1:12 AM EST up reply actions

So you're telling me

The outcome of the NFC Championship would have been the same if we played in Philly?

Maybe, but I would way rather have played at home than had to travel west. The Eagles played 3 straight road games and in the end it caught up to them

by tanman5 on Dec 21, 2009 1:14 AM EST up reply actions

here's the thing

The johnny g post i was responding to implied that the dallas game in week 17 is the “season” as he called it. I disagree, the eagles are in the playoffs, that is when their “season” really begins…therefore they do not NEED the first round bye to succeed in the playoffs, it is always nice, but not needed, if the eagles lose to the cowboys it is NOT their season, that is a silly statement to make.

by PhilsForever on Dec 21, 2009 2:12 AM EST up reply actions

I really dont think chicago will be automatic for the vikings. they have struggled a little bit on the road and as you saw tonight anything can happen in the nfl

by eaglesinmd on Dec 21, 2009 12:17 AM EST reply actions

I don't know

Something tells me Cutler will complete more passes to Antoine Winfield than Devin Hester.

I think the Giants can beat the Vikings though, and all we need is one loss and for us to win out
