Jordan to Make Permanent Move to MLB?

The Eagles sneaked in a new defensive formation last week against the Giants that featured the latest twist on the team’s Linebacker position. The package was utilized for only a play or so, but it had Will Witherspoon and Chris Gocong manning the outside spots and Akeem Jordan (pictured) playing at MLB. Of course, veteran Jeremiah Trotter saw most of the repetitions at the position, but it is now being speculated that Jordan, who missed 4 games with a hyper-extended knee earlier in the season, will remain the primary Middle Linebacker.

Prior to his injury, the 3rd-year player had been atop the Eagles’ statistical leaders in terms of total tackles, and also had recorded a sack and a pair of interceptions. And what has been apparent all season, the Birds have constantly rotated the starter in the heart of the defense, going from young backups like Joe Mays and Omar Gaither to veterans of the Outside LB spot (such as Witherspoon and Gocong), and even to a player who was retired in 2008, Trotter.

Now the organization is contemplating Jordan’s role on the defense and may move him full-time to the middle. “We expect him to be a little bit better this week physically, coming off of the injury and then playing that middle position and moving around like he’s doing, having him build up a little bit of experience at the same time,” defensive coordinator Sean McDermott said. “We want the best three on the field. You hate to keep moving players around from a continuity standpoint and consistency standpoint,” “Will Witherspoon being here now and having moved when Akeem went down to the [outside] linebacker position, we just hate to keep moving guys around, [we're] trying to get them in a position where they’re comfortable. The injuries haven’t allowed for as much of that as we would’ve liked up to this point.”

It is certainly a great thing that Jordan’s health is improving and he will be able to return in a bigger role on the field, but the rumored move to MLB also brings up some questions about the future of the position. The planned starter in the middle during the offseason was the young and talented Stewart Bradley, but obviously he was lost for the season with a knee injury. And Jeremiah Trotter, who has played quite well for a player who was previously out of professional football for almost two years, is also facing a loss in future playing time because of it, though he wasn’t expected to be with Philly for long anyway. For now, though, concentration should be on the next game and how the Linebacker position pans out for that…we’ll worry about the coming seasons later.

Bradley

So where does Bradley move? Honestly, I’m not a huge gocong fan and I’d love to see bradley in the SAM and move jordan back to WILL with witherspoon in the middle.

Any thoughts?

While we're at it, let's plug Weaver into MLB role

May as well, Jordan going to be like the 10th player starting at MLB…

I miss Stewart. :(

RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

Bring Dan Klecko back

He could play a couple of downs at MLB and then through him in a couple of plays at quarterback and there is no way we could lose

klecko=wildcat quarterback?

Yeah Man

He is the prototypical wildcat quarterback. There is nothing like watching a fat-man run with the ball. He will be almost as good at QB as he was a FB. The only other person I would chose for our wildcat QB would be Big Red.

At first I thought that you were advocating Jordan's permanent move...

…to Major League Baseball. Then I saw that it was Middle Line Backer. Then I thought that his moving to Major League Baseball would make much more sense.

i bet that

if bradley is all the way back he is moved to sam, and gocong is out, but that is just what i am thinking

Totally Agree!
"We want the best three (Linebackers) on the field."

If this indeed a “Permanent” move..then See ya Gocong! I’ve never been on the Gocong bandwagon (wait..there’s a Gocong bandwagon haha). He is SOLID but that’s it! There’s is nuttn wrong with being a solid player but u WANT THE BEST on the field! I will rejoice when Bradley, Jordan and Spoon are on the field together. Gocong is outta his element when it comes to the 4-3 defense. He is suppose to be a “speed rusher” but they hardly ever blitz him nor use him in a pressure package. He is VERY VERY solid against the run though. Here’s a point though…Why NOT move him to DE eventually. Howard/Parker are both get’n up there in age (still doing a decent job though) and V.Abiamiri seems to be made outta glass. Why not try Gocong at DE. Utilize his pass rushing skills and the fact he is VERY SOLID against the run, that sounds like a good quality DE right there! But all in all it’s not his entirely his fault. He’s more of a 3-4 LB! I’d be curious to see him at DE or in a true 3-4 scheme!!!

I can't say this is permanent

Before we can start saying what the plan is next year remember most of them are on the last years of their contracts. Akeem is a RFA, Gocong is a FA, and Trotter is a probably going to retire. Word is that they are putting Fokou in to cover Vernon, but to me it seems more like they might be grooming him now to replace Gocong (not that I’m complaining). I don’t see Akeem making a permanent switch to MLB. I just can’t see that, but the point is is that we are too deep into the latter part of the season to keep doing this LB Musical Chairs game so I think they are trying to get everything set and put down around playoff time.

Haha

When I first read this, I thought “MLB= Major League Baseball”. I was like ’what?"

Im Not Sure Why.............

Spoon was moved outside when he did so well in the middle……….I say him and Jordan switch positions and lets go from there……..

by CJ's Eagles on Dec 19, 2009 12:46 PM EST reply actions

Spoon is the prototypical Will LB...

Jordan is a pretty built dude and is a sure tackler… I say give him a Shot at MLB in some scenerio’s with Spoon/Trot at MLB in normal packages..

Bu what everyone forgets to say is how good our DC McDermott is doing on D with a rag-tag group at LB and the walking wounded at DB…

thats what im trying to figure out, if you put spoon in the middle akeem weakside and gocong at sam, you would still have the three best players on the field only it makes ALOT more sense

by footballfreak20 on Dec 19, 2009 1:40 PM EST reply actions

Soooo True my friend!

That’s why I dont understand it.! Something is very fishy. Why put the HEAVIER Spoon on the outside and the SMALLER Jordan in the middle!?! But I guess they’re seeing something that we dont know about. …Or are they???!
