San Francisco at Philadelphia: The Definition of a Trap Game

Picture this: You have just come off a big victory over a playoff contender, and your team is being hyped up by the national media as a Super Bowl contender.  And now, you get to take on the sub-.500 San Francisco 49ers

This describes the Philadelphia Eagles

A week ago it described the Arizona Cardinals

Arizona's 30-17 victory over Minnesota (that was not as close as the score indicates) was arguably more impressive than our win yesterday.  They were in prime position for a 3-seed and in striking distance of Minnesota for the first-round bye.  They had a chance to clinch the NFC West for the second year in a row in front of a national audience on Monday Night Football.

What did they do?  They turned the ball over 7 times.  Frank Gore rushed for 167 yards and the 49ers had a comfortable victory.

The Eagles cannot afford to have an emotional let-down.  THe fact is they are playing another tough team that will cause some matchup problems.  We are the better team, we are playing at home against a west coast team playing on a short week.  But we CANNOT sleep on this game.  The Eagles need to come out with the same intensity as last week.  They have not won anything yet.  I want to see the young guys (particularly Desean Jackson, who has been a national sensation this week) come out with the same intensity again.

Offensively, we have an advantage.  Roddy White torched the 49ers secondary for 200 yards and I think the Eagles should have success through the air.  The matchup of Brent Celek and Patrick Willis should be interesting as well.  However, I expect the Eagles to put up at least 28 points.

The defense is another story.  Can they shake off last week's effort?  They're facing young, but talented receivers again this week.  Michael Crabtree is similar to Hakeem Nicks, but he is better.  He can break tackles, jump and make great catches.  Josh Morgan provides some speed opposite him, and of course the Eagles will have problems covering Vernon Davis.  Frank Gore had a big game last week and the Eagles have struggled with running backs like LT (and even last week the rush defense was meh).

The key is, then, to force Alex Smith into turnovers by bringing the heat consistently.  Force them into third and long and force errant throws that can be gobbled up by Asante Samuel and CO.

This is not the Eagles defense of old.  Teams are going to move the ball on us, and they are going to score.  I think our defense is very similar to the New Orleans Saints.  The Saints give up a lot of points.  They have some talented players.  BUt they have no left defensive end opposite Will Smith, and they are weak at one of the safety spots.  In addition, outside of Jonathan Vilma, the linebackers have been inconsistent.  However, while teams do score on them, the Saints force turnovers at the right time, and the explosive offense takes care of the rest  This Eagles defense will have to rely on big plays to help the offense win the game.

The mentality for the Eagles will be the key.  Will Desean Jackson take it easy?  This week he arrived as a superstar.  Is he going to rest on his laurels?  Because he can't.  He is our best player and we need him to play like he's capable of playing.  Will the defense continue to make sloppy plays?  Or will the veterans step up and light a fire under the defense's ass.  Time will tell.  But we cannot afford to become Week 15's version of the Week 14 Arizona Cardinals.

I'm not trying to criticize the Eagles

Emotional hangover losses happen to lots of teams and the Eagles need to be aware of this.

by tanman5 on Dec 15, 2009 3:49 PM EST up reply actions

Good call.

I watched some of the game last night and San Fran definitely will not be a pushover. I’m not worried about our offense, but I agree that the defense needs to either a) tighten up somehow or b) get some big plays. Tackling this week would be nice to see as well.

by NOLACuse on Dec 15, 2009 3:43 PM EST reply actions

I disagree

This is not a trap game for us. Rather it is a small break in our schedule. There are a few difficult things about this game but we also got some breaks.

Difficulties:
1.) San Fran is a physical team.
2.)They play with a lot of pride that comes from their HC.

Things going our way:
1.) They just played a div foe on Monday night.
2.) It was like their SB
3.) They are on a short week.
4.) They have to fly across country.

by Dmyth13 on Dec 16, 2009 11:48 AM EST up reply actions

Yea

Imagine how different it would be if it was in San Fran…

1) Their crowd would still be pumped from the MNF Win against a div rival
2) We play like crap on the West Coast
3) Not sure on 3

We luck out having it in Philly.

by Sparki on Dec 17, 2009 3:37 PM EST up reply actions

lol seriously?

we played the giants at home who needed a win way more than the 9ers do.

we play our best ball in december. i have the normal “worries” about this game…but nothing additional because of our win this past week.

See the Week 16 loss to Washington last year

I am worried about this. Notsomuch because of last night’s game, since the 49ers had already beaten the Cards this year (and looked good doing it). But because I always worry, and this really is a trap game. At least it’s at home.

Stupid Jets...

The denver game isn’t going to be on next week either with the Jets playing at 4:15 also.

by Livnletdye on Dec 15, 2009 4:53 PM EST up reply actions

Actually

That Jets game during the Denver game SHOULD be showing on CBS. And, FOX already stated that this would be a nationally televised game….

At least, I think they did.

by LegendKnight22 on Dec 15, 2009 8:14 PM EST up reply actions

So, like this past week, there will be two 4:15 games on (thank god I got to watch the cowgirls lose to the chargers.)?

As far as NFL.com is concerned both Eagles and Jets games are to be aired on CBS:

DEN @ PHI Lincoln Financial Field 4:15 PM CBS
NYJ @ IND Lucas Oil Stadium 4:15 PM CBS

with FOX showing:

DET @ SF Candlestick Park 4:05 PM FOX

I can always be satisfied that I pick up local Philly FOX and CBS channels in SD, but would MUCH rather watch em in HD..

I hope that the DET @ SF game will be nixed with either of the two on CBS..

We just may end up getting the game.. It was moved to 4:15 due to the snow storm.

CHI @ BAL M&T Bank Stadium 4:15 PM FOX
GB @ PIT Heinz Field 4:15 PM FOX
SF @ PHI Lincoln Financial Field 4:15 PM FOX

how to always tell...

… what network a game is on:

The conference of the VISITING team is the network that will show the game. NFC for Fox and AFC for CBS.

So for example, the Denver @ Eagles game will be on CBS.

I live in NY too...

Which is why I attached a Slingbox to my brother-in-laws TV in Philly. Now I always can see the Eagles from the comfort of my apartment instead of driving the 100 miles down there to watch the games (or get stuck in a NY sports bar). Got a relative or friend in Philly with a good internet connection and a cable box sure to be set to the Eagles games? Go get the Slingbox and never miss another game…

A letdown for who?

The 49ers who just came off a big Monday matchup against their biggest division rival?

And that wasn’t a trap game for the Cards. It was a divisional rival who had beat them earlier in the year.

by JasonB on Dec 15, 2009 5:17 PM EST reply actions

In my opinion, it was a let-down in the sense

That Arizona was coming off an emotional victory over a very strong team in Minnesota. Sure, San Francisco had beaten them earlier; however, San Francisco was 5-7 and certainly not a team anywhere near the level of Minnesota. Arizona played a sloppy game with tons of mistakes.

Point is, the Eagles won a big game last week, but if they take it easy, SF will make them pay.

by tanman5 on Dec 15, 2009 5:43 PM EST up reply actions

San Francisco should have beaten the Vikings..

If it wasn’t for a circus last minute throw by Brett Favre. So, I would say that the 49ers are capable of being a team at any level, be it high or low.

by Sacpike on Dec 15, 2009 9:34 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly

So the Eagles will have to be sharp this week

by tanman5 on Dec 16, 2009 1:24 AM EST up reply actions

Arizona playing sloppy?

The fumbles were all legitimate FORCED fumbles due to hard hits and vicious strips. Warner was sacked 4 times and hurried all night.

I know i’m a 49er fan, but the defense played lights-out…the Cardinals didn’t play sloppy.

by Tre9er on Dec 16, 2009 11:07 AM EST up reply actions

yeah

I noticed that too. Your defense was on fire!

"What did it feel like? That collision, I didn't feel nothing, because he was pretty much defenseless. It was like running through a cardboard box. Seriously. Cardboard box."- Sheldon Brown on his pounding of Reggie Bush in the '06 Playoffs

by jalarsen1 on Dec 16, 2009 11:47 AM EST up reply actions

dude, seriously?

Don’t be such a homer, the niners defense was great, but 7 turnovers??? arizona obviously played sloppy to turnover the ball seven times.

by PhilsForever on Dec 16, 2009 12:14 PM EST up reply actions

When you take a helmet to the ball from a Safety going full speed…you’re going to fumble. That’s not sloppy.

Warner was sacked quickly after the snap and stripped from his blindside twice. I guess you could call the O-Line playing sloppy there.

Boldin was gang tackled and Mark Roman stripped the ball. Not Boldin playing sloppy.

Patrick Willis whacked the ball out of LSH’s hands after a completion over the middle. If Patrick Willis hits the ball…you’re going to fumble (see current pro-bowl balloting for inside LB’s for further clarification)

by Tre9er on Dec 16, 2009 3:04 PM EST up reply actions

my point being

I don’t think there was a single forced fumble where the guy was carrying the ball away from his body or wasn’t being gang-tackled. Except Warner’s fumbles but he never saw them coming and was in the pocket.

I AM a homer…to be SURE. But our defense played lights-out. Maybe it was better than we’ll play this Sunday…I guess we’ll all have to wait and see.

by Tre9er on Dec 16, 2009 3:08 PM EST up reply actions

Not trying to take anything away from the 49ers

Even if the Cardinals had played their best game, they might have lost.

But I think you can agree that the Cardinals did not play their best game.

The 49ers baet the cards up

Those turnovers were takeaways, not giveaways! As a Niner fan I know that this is going to be a tough game, but we are coming to win, so the Eagles better buckle up those chin straps. P-Willy didn’t like your lucky win in SF last year!

by mmamcneill on Dec 17, 2009 12:36 AM EST up reply actions

Lucky?

Care to explain where the logic behind that comes from? We did win by two touchdowns

by tanman5 on Dec 17, 2009 2:44 AM EST up reply actions

Yes I would

I say lucky because we had the horrible jt o turnover at qb, and he helped you to a 23 point 4th quarter. And you still had to settle for three field goals. that was pathetic. Good luck on sunday though. (Sarcasm)

by mmamcneill on Dec 17, 2009 4:04 AM EST up reply actions

You helped us to a 23 point 4th quarter?

No sir. If your turnovers against Arizona were forced, then the ones we forced out of JT O’Sullivan were most definitely forced.

Juqua Parker pick-sixed a pass in which he was brilliantly dropped into coverage by the late, great Jim Johnson. We outgained, you, outplayed you, and all without Brian Westbrook.

You had three turnovers, off of which we scored 13 points. That means even without those points, we scored 27 to your 26.

by tanman5 on Dec 17, 2009 5:54 PM EST up reply actions

It was jt o turnover dummy

you didn’t do anything great. your offense sucked that day, and yeah you only scored 13 points off of t.o.‘s, but we would have scored at least a FG without those t.o.’s and you would have lost. None of that matters now though, I can’t wait till Sunday, it will be a great game, and I promise you the outcome will be different than last year!

by mmamcneill on Dec 17, 2009 6:01 PM EST up reply actions

Are you kidding me we outgained you

The Eagles put up 383 total yards. how is that a “sucky” offense?

And you got 7 points off a blocked field goal, which is a million times more fluky than any turnover. That’s a 10-point swing right there.

So, no, I’m pretty sure San Francisco was the inferior team and got outplayed.

And it was in San Francisco.

by tanman5 on Dec 18, 2009 7:09 AM EST up reply actions

Blocked FGs aren't fluky for the 49ers

Our GM is somewhat of an idiot and he drafts players that can block kicks (instead of getting players that can actually contribute on defense).

I believe the guy that blocked the FG against you last year already has 2 blocks this season.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

by SportsChicken on Dec 18, 2009 2:36 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not saying it was fluky

But it’s more fluky than our defense (which intercepts everybody) intercepting JT O’Sullivan.

mmacneill was suggesting that the Eagles got lucky, and I was merely pointing out that those kind of breaks went both ways. Again I actually respect the Niners and prefer you to the Cardinals for sure.

by tanman5 on Dec 18, 2009 6:52 PM EST up reply actions

Dude calm down

mmamcneill, Dude you did this type of talk to the Titans on their blog and we lost that week. While i agree with you in spirit (49er fan if you could guess) please have a little more respect for the Opposition on their board. Talk on NN all you want though ill join you. Reality is that this game is going to be tough, the Birds are a great team and in all likely hood should win. Do i think we can win… Yes… but we need our A game and they need to make mistakes. I do agree with the article though. If you think we are a push over team and dont prepare we will capatize on it and own you:-)

by DCSMITH722 on Dec 18, 2009 11:40 AM EST up reply actions

I already said that it would be a tough game

I know that on paper they are a better team than us this year, but I still believe that we will squeak this one out. donovan mcnabb doesn’t have the heart, mccoy can’t run against P-Willy, and DJax is a stud but only because he is from Cal. So good luck Eagles no disrespect meant, but we are ready, and you better be

by mmamcneill on Dec 19, 2009 4:19 AM EST up reply actions

After one bad outing on a bad field we are ready to give up on our defense?

I’m not buying it. Our defense is still one of the best in the league. Remember early in the year when our D was better than our offense. it’s only a matter of time before both can come together. We’ll just have to see this Sunday.

"It's unfortunate that happened. That's no excuse. Absolutely no excuse."

-Andy Reid

by immynimmy on Dec 15, 2009 5:41 PM EST reply actions

If only it was one bad outing

New Orleans- 48 points
San Diego- 35 points
Washington- 24 points and it could have been more
Chicago- 24 points and Jay Cutler missed two throws that would have been easy touchdowns for a competent quarterback
New York Giants- 38 points
We haven’t had a dominant defensive performance against a good team since Week 8 against the Giants.

So no, our defense is not one of the best in the league right now. However, it does have the chance to be good enough to ensure that our offense will beat whoever it plays. Thanks to our offense, we don’t need the defense to be great. We just need them to be good enough. Force a couple of turnovers, break the team’s flow on a couple of series for the offense to provide the decisive scores.

by tanman5 on Dec 15, 2009 5:46 PM EST up reply actions

perspective

is our defense no longer the bend but not break defense of years past, of course not, but that has a lot to do w/ some injuries. Our defense is still doing good enough to get us wins.

24 to washington who 2 weeks earlier but up 27 on DEN and put up 30 on the saints.
7 to Atlanta who put up 23 on the saints with the same team.
20 to a Dallas team that has a very capable offense.
38 to the giants after it rained for 8 hours and pour tackling caused long TD’s.
it was “31” to a very good SD team.

Also only two of those games you listed were losses, and to me thats the more important thing. The Eagles LB’s bein back and finally getting to play together will make a big difference. Im not worried, they’ll be sharp come playoff time, and this isnt a trap game.

"Eagles fans are a passionate group who love their team," said McNabb, "if not the actual players. It's not like winning a Super Bowl before the first month of the season is the hardest thing they've ever asked of me. That'd be all those times they asked me to go kill myself."

by greenbean#twoOH on Dec 15, 2009 7:10 PM EST up reply actions

How is this not a trap game?

We are coming off a big win, and playing a tough, scrappy team with a less-than-stellar record.

The rain doesn’t explain why Eli Manning had all day to throw unless we brought a massive blitz and why there were receivers open downfield.

As I said, this defense can improve. But I’m not going to lie and say I’m satisfied with the way they’ve played this season. I’m not. Sheldon Brown getting healthy will help, but the safeties have to step it up (and they definitely can).

by tanman5 on Dec 16, 2009 1:26 AM EST up reply actions

You have to give credit to our entire D and McDermott

We’ve had a PLETHORA of injuries throughout this D. I mean, to still have a top 15, maybe 10 D with all these injuries is absolutely remarkable.

by LegendKnight22 on Dec 15, 2009 8:16 PM EST up reply actions

That's a good point

We’re basically working with a shadow of our original D, or at least we were for a while.

With Akeem and Joselio back, we’re better, but basically this is who we have going forward. I think the folks who suggested we need to be good enough have hit it on the head. The offense doesn’t seem to be going 3-and-out as much, and they haven’t put the D in a lot of bad situations.

Also, every week this D is coming up with scores or turnovers to set up scores. Give ‘em credit for responding even when they don’t have the full arsenal.

Give us the win so Eagles fans can taste a Super Bowl. You know, the thing Niners fans got to see a few times.

by tanman5 on Dec 15, 2009 5:47 PM EST up reply actions

If we lose this game

We have two more games against playoff contenders. If we lose all three, or only win one out of the three, we could miss the playoffs (something that would definitely get in the way of us making the NFC Championship).

Even if the Niners don’t make it this year, the future is bright. Youg usy have Crabtree, Morgan, Gore, Davis, and Smith looks like a quality qb now. On defense, Patrick Willis is a monster.

We're tired of waiting till "next year" even if our future is bright

but the Eagles honestly are pretty good, and I think can beat Denver at home, and demolish Dallas. We’re hoping you guys win the division because I think dallas will lose at least 2 out of 3 and if we can win all 3, we can be the 6th seed. Also the Giants have to lose one.

I’m wary just like I am for every game, but, I think the Eagles are the better team, at home, when they are on a roll. I respect San Fran’s D, but their offense other than Davis doesn’t give me much cause for concern.

Phili is favored by 9 right? Why are some niners fans talking so much shit on here? You’d think they have had recent success or something! I don’t think people on here were talking down to you Niner fans, they were showing respect for an up and comming team. That being said, DO something good before you come on here and talk this much shit!

by AZ Eagle on Dec 17, 2009 11:49 AM EST up reply actions

I'm not talking crap

just defending our win over Arizona. They might not have played there best game but most of what happened was our defense taking the ball away, not being handed the ball on a platter.

Crabtree is a threat, averaging nearly 60 yards per game with two TD’s in only 8 games, with no training camp. If Frank Gore doesn’t give you cause for concern I don’t know who would.

Just saying, give us some respect.

by Tre9er on Dec 17, 2009 11:55 AM EST up reply actions

The talking crap part was more for mmamcneil than you.

I’m not worried about some other parts of your offense more based on what our D is good and bad at than because of what your players are good at. Crabtree doesn’t bother me too much because our D has been VERY good against #1 and #2 receivers this year, and he’s not SO good that I think this will change much. Gore is very good, he’s a complete back, and I have a lot of respect for him. However, I think we will come out with a clear focus on stopping the run, and our D line is very capable of doing that. We really struggle against TEs though, and Davis is one of the most, if not the most talented tight end in the country. I’m hoping he leaves his hands at home this week. I only watch niner football occassionally, but when I’ve watched him since he’s been drafted he seems to have a bit of a problem with drops.

by tanman5 on Dec 17, 2009 5:56 PM EST up reply actions

He has ALL the tools

he just hasn’t had that breakout game yet. His hands are exceptional though he needs to calm down (there have been some very difficult catches that he has not made this year while he makes some others that are equally difficult at times too). He has quickness in and out of breaks, runs veteran-like routes, goes to get the ball rather than waiting on it to arrive…

If we threw the ball to him more, and he had a training camp to get chemistry with Alex…he’d be scary good. As it is he’s pretty damn good for how long he’s been here.

Mcnabb is 3-2 vs the niners, 1-1 at home.
AR is 4-2 vs the niners.

"Eagles fans are a passionate group who love their team," said McNabb, "if not the actual players. It's not like winning a Super Bowl before the first month of the season is the hardest thing they've ever asked of me. That'd be all those times they asked me to go kill myself."

We have to end the 49ers season this weekend

Everyone should note that the 49ers are still very much alive for the playoffs. If you don’t believe me, play around with this excellent playoff scenario tool on yahoo: Playoff Scenario Generator. You’d be surprised how many times the 49ers and not the Cowboys or Giants make the post-season.

They have to be approaching this game as a playoff game. And based on what we saw last night, they are very dangerous right now.

If they win this weekend, their playoff hopes are all that much better.

LIKE WE DID TO THE BEARS, AND POSSIBLY THE GIANTS. WE HAVE TO BECOME THE 49ERS SEASON CRUSHER!!!!

The Eagles cannot afford to have an emotional let-down

I disagree. Trust me when I say I do not want to see our men go out there lazy and content, but at the same time if we did happen to have an emotional let-down it wouldn’t be the end of the world. With the tough schedule Dallas has along with their annual December trainwreck, and the way the Giants have been falling behind, our chances to get into the playoffs will be pretty damn good either way. Again, I am in no way saying this is what I want to happen…just pointing out that this is not a huge must-win game, which is why I do agree with you that this is a trap game for sure.

That part caught my eye too ...

… but for a different reason.

What makes us think this would be a letdown game? The Eagles, in reality, have won four straight, but only Atlanta was an ass-kicking. They very well could’ve lost to the Bears, Redskins and Giants, and I think they’re smart enough to know that and shouldn’t come in riding high.

Further, with the Giants and Cowboys hot on their heels — especially if Dallas beats the Saints on Saturday night — there is no reason to take their feet off the gas, because they haven’t clinched jack yet. Not to mention there’s a chance they could catch the Vikings for a 2 seed if things get really crazy.

I think the concept of a trap game is valid, I just don’t see a good reason why they would have the letdown this week. There’s still tons to play for, there’s still the Saints and Vikings and Cowboys and Giants to worry about being better or catching them, and they didn’t play all that well on D this past week, so at least half the team comes to practice ready to work.

Plus the game’s at the Linc, not on the road, where they’ve laid a lot of their eggs.

Even if they lose this one, I doubt it will be because of poor preparation/lack of effort

Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome

Yeah I don’t disagree with you there. There’s definitely still a ton to play for, so this team has no reason to fall asleep this week.

I was bringing up the point that if we do happen to lose this week, there would be no huge reason to panic. We have built up a decent amount of breathing room for the time being, but if we lose this week and the Cowboys beat the Saints, that will be a different story.

Like you said though, we might be in a good position right now, but if we continue to play hard in December then our position can get much much better. I will definitely be watching the Vikings closely that’s for sure.

You're right

To us it makes a lot of sense. Then again, what reason did Arizona have to take their foot off the gas? They were playing for a division title.

The Eagles do have tons to play for. However, they are media darlings this week (5-7 in most power rankings) and they can’t let that change their mindset.

i think its good that the 49ers pounded the cardinals they way that they did. that should keep us focused in our preparation this week

Yeah

Andy Reid is having them practice in pads too for the first time since training camp. this is good news

My thing is… we lost to the Raiders, we should ALWAYS be playing at our utmost potential. Especially in situations where we aren’t guarranteed a play off spot yet. I think the 49ers have the ability to beat us, especially if our defense decides to take the day off. We gotta play smart, every sunday, including this one.

That raider game...

is in the past, they also beat the steelers and the bengals. I realize the steelers are down this year, but they are defending super bowl champions. The Raiders seem to play up to their competition this year and are not as bad as people make them out to be, hence how they got crushed by the worst team in the nfc east and beat the best team in the nfc east. The Eagles should be up for every game, but losing to the raiders should not be a motivational factor.

I wasn’t stating it should be a motivating factor. All I was saying is we can’t take any team or any game for granted. Period. No one should think this game should be easier than the next. Thats all I was saying.

9er fan here

Our offense and secondary will be the key. Either Gore or Alex Smith have to have good games…and one of them can’t cough up the ball a lot. We’ve yet to have great games from both at the same time…that might be scary for any team facing us.

Alex needs to be smart and patient while not holding onto the ball. Frank needs to be patient too but run with passion and intensity. The o-line seems to be playing leaps and bounds better the past 3 games.

Our secondary needs to show up again. Get physical at the line (something our DB’s are excellent at) and then the safeties (Goldson mainly) have to be smart and quick to break to the ball. Tackling in the secondary must be solid too.

Our front 7 are a force. They might not get national attention but hardly anyone has run against us this year and the QB pressures/sacks have increased over the past 3 games. Beware of an unknown to many: Ahmad Brooks. PROTF (Pass Rusher Of The Future)…and pretty much of the present too.

Brooks is a beast.

He’s got 5 sacks and really hadn’t gotten a lot of playing time until recently.

I'm at a predicament.

I need Gore to beast for me to win in fantasy playoffs. But, I want my Eagles to win.

Meh. Fuck FF. I’mma just go ahead and start Lawrence Maroney.
