Around SBN: VIDEO: Austin Rivers' Buzzer Beater Finishes Off UNC

The Eagles promoted tight end Martin Rucker from the practice squad to the 53-man active roster on Tuesday. To make room for him, the Eagles waived running back P.J. Hill. Rucker gives the Eagles another pass-catching threat at the tight end position to pair up with Brent Celek.

Smith 82-2?

Did something happen, and I missed it? Are we giving up on having a Smith #82? or has that dream just moved to the back burner for now?

by Sparki on Dec 15, 2009 3:24 PM EST reply actions

i think the eagles would rather have a 3rd te than a 4th running back. before this move, the eagles had 4 backs playing (weaver, mccoy, buckley, and hill) and 2 te’s (celek and mccoy). now it’s 3 and 3… plus westbrook may be coming back in a week or so for the playoff push.

Nevertheless...

Rucker has ability. I see him sticking with the active roster for the next few years

I don't know anything about this guy.....

You seem to be pretty high on him, so I’m assuming that you do know something about him.
I’d like to hear your spin on him (thanks in advance).

He was a 4th-round selection in the 2008 Draft, and stepped in as a replacement starter for a game with the Browns, making only 2 catches but executing solid blocking. In addition, he played several other games in which he lined up as the 2nd TE and provided excellent run blocking for Cleveland’s RB Jamal Lewis, who topped 1,000 yards that year.

Overall, he just has a lot of potential, and I really wouldn’t be surprised if he is the Birds’ 3rd TE next year in place of Smith (Ingram returns from IR as 2nd)

i think that they are doing it in case celek can’t go with his sore back.

Looks like Westy might be active next week. I wish they hold him at least till the Denver game just to be safe.

Andy Reid is 43-5 when running the ball at least 30 times in a game( Ray Diddy on Eagles Post Game Live after Bears Victory)

Yea man! He was a warrior! I was sad to see him leave! I wish him well!

Unfortunately..in the current NFL…..Fullbacks are not used a whole lot. And most teams only have one per active roster!

Im a lil disappointed to see PJ Hill go too!

Man…I really wanted to see him run! Good news though…this means that Eldra Buckley must be doing a good job when given the opportunity! He runs hard and I like when they bring him in for short yardage situations!! I know it was in some garbage time..but Eldra was killing it in the Chicago game! Did u see how hard he was running! I was like WOW, this kid is a real RB! Anyway they must think that Eldra can fill in no problem if they’re letting PJ Hill go!

Buckley also

is a beastface on special teams. He seems to always be down there making tackles.

This decision does not bother me though!

This decision does however. I posted this on another thread

Head coach Andy Reid said on Monday that the Eagles will employ a "linebacker by committee" of sorts for the rest of the season, and Jordan’s flexibility is a big factor in the success of the linebacker unit.

Who knows how this pans out, but this explains some of the inconsistency problems on our defensive side of the ball! If we dont have set LBs..how can we GEL!

Linebacker by committee?

I’m not liking the sound of that either…..

by Chinaman on Dec 15, 2009 4:19 PM EST up reply actions

I don't like the idea

We’ve seen a sort of “by committee” solutions this year (more than I could imagine…QB by committee…lol). Mostly OLine (esp. RG) by committee…it did not worked out well. I’m concerned with this one as well.

by samson9 on Dec 16, 2009 6:25 AM EST up reply actions

It’s not an ideal situation, but many of our linebackers are a liability against either the run or pass.

by zfg on Dec 15, 2009 5:00 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I know…..
The injury situation this year (especially at linebacker) really has been disruptive.

by Chinaman on Dec 15, 2009 5:17 PM EST up reply actions

So the question is ....

If

many of our linebackers are a liability against either the run or pass.
…what should we do, NEXT season to improve this!? Reid and JJ (RIP) have stuck with Gocong for soo long now yet he is just average in my eyes. He tends to disappear out there. At least we here Broddrick Bunks name and Patterson here and there but Gocong is just there. He is solid against the run but…u kno. If many of our LB are a liability, wouldn’t makes sense to make a change after this season! But will they stick with Gocong for yet another year.! We can agree that Jordan, Spoon and Bradley are our BEST LBs!! But the problem is Bradley is our MLB and Jordan is too small to play the SAM. It would have to be Bradley at SAM then. Somebody is going to lose PT when Bradley gets back next year and I hope its Gocong!!! Also why did they move Spoon to WLB when it was working with Jordan at WLB and Spoon at MLB! Why keep changing at this point in the season. We need to settle in and gel! These are the questions that won’t get asked and I need to know the answers!

and watch countless hours of film. Im pretty sure whatever question you have thought of has been answered/thought about days ago between the coaches.

meh idk!! We'll see how it goes.

Our LB’s are gonna get tested yet again this coming week against the 49ers. We’ll see how this switching of LB positions works out.

I agree, but

fans are made for being smarter than coaches…that’s the best part of it, i really enjoy doing it…LOL

by samson9 on Dec 16, 2009 6:28 AM EST up reply actions

Not just Eagle Fans ..but most fans of Football have stated numerous

times in the past that “The Eagles NEED better WRs” and “The Eagles NEED more weapons”. How about “We NEED to run the ball more” and “Be MORE balanced”

Again..this was the FANS who were saying this time and time again! Sometimes the Fans DO IN FACT see factors or problems that Coaches will NOT admit ARE a factor (s) or problem (s)! Simple as that

"... You play to win the game. Hello? You play to win the game. You don't play it to just play it. That's the great thing about sports: you play to win..."

by Realtalk32 on Dec 16, 2009 11:47 AM EST up reply actions

one thing is what a coach tells to the media

another is what he really thinks, and sometimes even another thing is what he does… for example Reid never gonna admit publicly, he has any problem with any players, although he obviously has….
But again, fans can’t always say: Coach knows better, I keep my mouth shut… Fans do fans job, coach does his.

by samson9 on Dec 16, 2009 12:14 PM EST up reply actions

I hear that

Though..these things “more balance” and “run more” don’t have anything to do with the “Media”. These are things that help ur team win games. We are pretty balanced right now (on Offense) and we are running the ball a lil more AND more effectively! Look us now. U could even look at us in the past when we have been more balanced. 9 times outta 10, we usually win that game! I understand what u are tryna say though

"... You play to win the game. Hello? You play to win the game. You don't play it to just play it. That's the great thing about sports: you play to win..."

Rucker’s a good blocking TE. I watched him play in college alongside Maclin.

"Backs in the 'I'...First and 10...McNabb, play action. Is back again. He is looking..he is going deep. He wants DeSean Jackson..who HAS IT!!! HE HAS IT!!! AND STEPPED INTO THE ENDZONE!! He took it away from the defender!! He took it away from Dominique Rogers-Cromarte, and ran into the endzone!!"

by McNabb2Maclin4Philly on Dec 15, 2009 5:15 PM EST reply actions

At Missouri?

How many snaps did Rucker get as a blocking TE in the Spread Offense?
3?

by cavortingEagle on Dec 15, 2009 10:23 PM EST up reply actions

In 2007 he was a starter in front of Chase Coffman. He was a pretty good receiver too.

I can see Minnesota losing to Chicago and NYG and if we can win out the Eagles can sit on the #2 seed, that will be needed to fully heal up some of our key banged up players

by MalibuLSV23 on Dec 15, 2009 8:39 PM EST up reply actions

I'd like that too

But I could also see us going up there and winning. I guess domes are loud, but for some reason that place doesn’t scare me.

Plus, in the playoffs, Brett Favre is our friend.

i don't see MIN losing to Chicago

MIN has a good D, and Jay Cutler likes throwing to the other team more than his own receivers. I just don’t see it, unfortunately.

Any relation to Frostee Rucker on the Bengals? Cause that’s a sweet name right there.
