Tested Mettle

If I were to tell you in August that 13 games into the season we'd be 9-4 atop the NFC East, you would have thought that a real possibility. If I had told you that we had done it while:

Donovan McNabb missed 2 games.
Brian Westbrook missed 7
Shawn Andrews didn't even see the season and Justice started
Todd Herremans missed 5
Jason Peters missed one
Stacy Andrews missed 4, but only started 2
DeSean Jackson missed 1
Kevin Curtis only played 2
Corny Ingram didn't see the field
Stewart Bradley was placed on IR before week 1
Omar Gaither followed not long after
Joselio Hanson missed a month
Ellis Hobbs landed on IR after 8 games
Akeem Jordan missed 4

I want to put this in perspective, to show why we are a different class than the rest of our division; and I'll use the Cowboys who are the healthiest of the 4. Imagine (especially if you are a cowboys fan) playing 13 games while:

Tony Romo missed two
Marion Barber missed 7
Marc Colombo never made it to the field
Kyle Kosier missed 4
Flozell missed one
Leonard Davis missed 4, but was only healthy enough to start 2
Miles Austin missed one
Roy Williams only played two
Martellus Bennett was placed on IR before the season started
Bradie James was placed on IR before week one
Bobby Carpenter followed not long after
Scandrick missed a month
Alan Ball went on IR after 8 games
Anthony Spencer missed 4

The fact is, the Cowboys have no excuses. They should own this division with the injuries suffered by us, the Redskins, and to a lesser degree, the Giants. Our resiliency is what has made the 2009 Eagles AWESOME! No other team in our division would compete if they suffered the injuries we have. The Giants fell off the ship after losing Kenny Philips alone. The Redskins have amassed a ton of injuries, and have not found an answer. The Cowboys sit at an underwhelming 2nd place while being the healthiest. These Eagles really are something special.

EFF IT, we're winning anyway!

Great post...

I like the Cowboys comparison – Good stuff. I’m almost a little mad at myself for not thinking of that angle myself.

And it really does speak volumes about the incredible depth of this team.

That is an awesome perspective to put on it. Perhaps this team is special enough.

Okay so maybe it's time to move on. Hopefully it'll be moving on to winning a Championship!

Great post. I thought of this a couple weeks back when injuries were at a high, but I was too lazy to really dig deep into the details of it.

I’d be curious to know how many games were truly missed by Cowboys players to see how we really compare injury-wise. If anybody has that info, throw it in the comments if you could.

The Eagles are the first team in NFL history to have a running back and a wide receiver with 500 yards apiece in the same season before their 22nd birthdays.

by Smitty2K3 on Dec 15, 2009 11:12 AM EST reply actions

Basically nothing...

Marion Barber – 1
Felix Jones – 2
Marc Colombo – 4
Martellus Bennett – 1
Gerald Sensabaugh – 1
Ken Hamlin – 1

And they lost rookie 3rd round OT Robert Brewster to IR during the preseason.

I think that’s it.

Backs, knees and toes.

Our injuries were appearing in clumps for a while. Very strange. I think the league should ban ACLs altogether. Just redesign the knee.

I completely agree with this post. We definitely had some major injuries to our squad but our depth have come through. We have a great group of guys. Even after our game against the Giants with a lot of our injured guys back, imagine if we had Bradley, Maclin, Andrews and all those guys out there… we would be unstoppable for sure. I look forward to the rest of this season… I got high hopes, as always.

Guys smarter than me...

…have repeatedly stated it’s not the team that you start with but who you have left at the end of the season that matters. Like EG5, I am in awe of, not only the starters, but the quality of the depth. (well, less so with the LB’s and secondary). Some people may claim AR is a lousy game-day coach, but no one can argue about his ability put a team together. And he’s getting better every year.

Other than the Skins’ no other team in the league had more significant injuries than us. Raiders game was lost by Peter’s injury alone.

by Route36 on Dec 15, 2009 1:01 PM EST reply actions

Eh, that's not really correct

The Saints have fared worse than us injury-wise this year.

About 10 minutes ago, I was pondering my own existence. Then I decided that it didn't matter.

by IronHank on Dec 15, 2009 1:25 PM EST up reply actions

They have very significant injuries in their secondary but that’s pretty much it. Their offense pretty much has kept in tact.

Ehh...

They have been hit pretty hard too, but it’s close. They’ve been hit in different areas, but you gotta give them credit regardless. They have been arguably the best team in the league even while suffering some major injuries.

The Giants have been pretty banged-up too, haven’t they?

Well losing Kenny Philips was their biggest loss

They lost Antonio Pierce a couple weeks back which hurts them, I think Kareem McKenzie’s been pretty banged up. Aaron Ross was out for a few games. Eli’s plantar fascaitis may not have caused him to miss time, but he was not 100% for a few games in there…so, yeah, they’ve had some injuries

Reid

for coach of the year. He and the front office gang have made this team significantly younger while also getting deeper. Sure, there are holes to plug, especially in the defensive secondary, but there are reasons to be very optimistic about how this team will look next year with more experience and guys like Abiamiri and Ingraham back from injury.

by EANX33 on Dec 15, 2009 1:54 PM EST reply actions

Abiamiri missed 3 games this year

but he’s been back for a while…did you mean someone else? Or did you mean that he’s still a little banged up even though he’s out there?

Yes

but he’s hardly the only one that could use some time to heal. Sheldon for another. I was just trying to keep the reply short not reinvent the original post which is great by the way.

you’re right, we have several guys who haven’t missed much time per se, but are not playing 100%…good point

if Bye, Dawk was willing, he’s more familiar with their starting rosters than I am…he would draw a better comparison

The Giants have had some pretty significant injuries, but he Redskins’ injury list is ridiculous. Since we swept the Skins this year, I’m OK with feeling a little bit bad for them.

I’m a little too busy at work today for a big list, but maybe tomorrow.

haha

no, I didn’t take it that way at all…it actually crossed my mind to do the same thing but…

I’m not as familiar with the Giants or Redskins starting rosters…so though I could look at their depth chart and see who’s starting now, I wouldn’t know if that was the original plan or not (i.e. if I didn’t know the eagles, I would see that our RT hasn’t missed a game, but I wouldn’t realize that was supposed to be Shawn Andrews)

Also, the Redskins injury list rivals ours, maybe it’s worse…the difference between us and them is that we’re still winning.

Ok, I just wanted to clarify b/c you never know with this text,

like you would if we were talking… But I think the Redskins entire OL is on IR, I think the amount of players on ours rivals the amount on theres but in reality we lost Bradley in the preseason and Ingram, so I truely dont count them b/c we had alot of time to adjust(no matter what the problems are at LB) and we arent missing our entire OL…

But I understand what your saying, I was just trying to help.

it was kinda lucky for us

to lose Gaither right before the trade deadline so we could move for Spoon. If Gaither had gotten hurt a week or two later, we’d be REALLY screwed (aka NYG and Antonio Pierce)

I actually believe that the Spoon deal was being worked out before

gaither got hurt.. Gaither was doing pretty bad, Infact I wouldnt be surprised if the only reason the trade went up to the trading deadline was because Gaither got hurt and we couldnt ship him off to STL with Gibson instead of giving up that pick.

Very interesting post. Love stuff like this.

Could you imagine how SCARY this team would be with all projected starters in at the same time for just one game. This team is limping on only one leg so to speak, but it’s amazing how we’re still using that last precious leg to kick the asses of other NFC East teams.

I had that thought during the Giants game

when Al Michaels said something about how Stewart Bradley was out, etc.

To think we could have had Bradley, Hobbs, Stacy Andrews, Sean Andrews and Kevin Curtis, among others, along for the ride as well kinda makes Joe Banner’s claims about his roster sound not-so-outlandish.

And regardless of what we do in the playoffs, you figure they’re in position to get even better in the offseason since there are some big-money contracts they can let go.

Absolutely. Not to mention our talented youngsters will have a year of experience under their belt.
