This will be fun...
I know, I know, after this big win this isn't what everyone wants to talk about....
BUT....Peter King had an interesting tidbit in his MMQB:
e. Interesting tidbit from respected St. Louis Post-Dispatch columnist Bernie Miklasz: "I would not be surprised, at all, to see the Rams make a play for Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick after the season.'' I agree.
f. Also would not be surprised to see the Rams make a very quiet inquiry about Donovan McNabb after the season either. Not saying the Eagles would make such a deal (two second-rounders and a four for McNabb?), but Kevin Kolb will be a fourth-year player, and Philly's not going to be able to keep him until McNabb retires.
I brought up the possibility of trading McNabb after some of his lesser performances, but even after the great one last night, I still would consider trading McNabb for 2 2nds and a 4th, that is how good I feel about Kolb. At some point the McNabb era is going to come to an end...you have a guy behind him who looks like a winner, are you really going to give up on the 4 years of development he has had for a couple more years hoping McNabb can win a championship? I feel that if he doesn't do it this year, it is time. We could REALLY use those picks to rebuild our defense...we need saftey help (Sean Jones tackling will not cut it), D line help, LB help (more depth assuing STU is healthy), CB help (who doesn't?) and O-line help (unless we still have faith in the Andrews)....that is a long list of help. The Vick comment is also exciting, because if Vick turns into a 3rd round draft choice or higher, I will be ecstatic.

This makes me feel dirty,
But I agree with you. If we don’t win a ring this year we should probably trade McNabb and get the goods for him. I’d forgotten that we have put 4 years into Kolb, it’s time to turn the page when the gettin’s good. I’d like some extra 2nds.

Zero chance
that we send 5 to the Rams. First of all i dont think this organization which has built its entire franchise around the guy would send him somewhere that bad.
5 is playing some his best football ever.

so…the Eagles would only send him to a good team? That makes sense?
And he is playing well, but lets not be sentimental, this is a business and we have a 2 round pick and 4 years invested in the future.
This team has ALWAYS been built around Defense, and we need draft picks to rebuild that defense. 2 2nd round picks is enough to get some really nice players…maybe even the Dawkins of the future (who was a 2nd round pick himself).
I think, with the weapons we have now Kolb could play just as effectively.

Vick
If he can land us a 2nd round pick from the Rams (which would essentially be a late 1st rounder), I will legitimately shit my pants.

Don't see it
Can’t see any package which would be ok to let McNabb leave. You don’t have to think he’s a future HOF-er to know he’s a very very good QB, and those are not that easy to find in the NFL, ask Cleveland. He stays and maybe we deal Kolb, I can see that happening for a high 2nd/low 1st.

We can't trade Kolb for a 2nd
we took him as a second and invested 4 years into him…how can we give him away for a second? That’s basically a terrible investment of 4 years of grooming.

I don’t think it would be a terrible investment considering he has been a good backup for McNabb when needed. It is not like we never used him. I think it’d be even tough to find a team willing to give a 2nd rounder for Kolb though.

I see your point
but I dont think its that simple. Those two are on another level and more importantly, they do not have a young guy waiting to take over that has showed alot of potential.
Its a really tough situation, kolb or mcnabb will be gone after this year. No way you let one of these guys walk after next season when they are free agents and get no value for him.
So do we extend mcnabb for another 2-3 years and hope he can keep playing at a high level, while letting go a “potential” franchise qb. Not saying he is yet, but we dont know and he has shown flashes of excellence.

This is really complicated
Vick, I assume is gone…so we’re left with Kolb and McNabb…
I’d love to keep both, but that’s probably unlikely…here’s the problem I see.
If we trade Kolb we need to get a 1st rounder (which won’t happen), otherwise 4 years of grooming is a completely wasted investment. We took him as a second, and groomed him…how can you just give him away 4 years of training later for the same thing you got him with. He’s simply worth more (to us at least) than the raw pick we used to get him.
If we trade McNabb, we give the reigns to a promising youngster with essentially no backup. That worries me a lot concerning depth. We have the luxury of feeling confident right now in our QB depth…I think that’s going to change drastically REALLY soon!

this is also a QB rich draft class, it will be easier to trade a veteran like McNabb than Kolb. I expect that we will be able to find a good QB to be Kolb’s backup and provide some competition should we Trade Vick and McNabb

I'd be curious to see
if we trade McNabb, but end up keeping both Vick and Kolb so we have some depth.
Not that I think that will happen, I would just rather see us keep two of our 3 QBs rather than lose 2…this seems to be the only even remotely likely pair that we could keep.
I can’t see us trading Kolb, but keeping McNabb and Vick
I don’t even think I see us trading Vick, while keeping Kolb and McNabb…Kolb’s ready to go, and someone’s going to want to pay him for it.
IF we’re going to keep two (which we likely won’t), kinda seems like McNabbs the odd man out

Fine…how about Tarvaris Jackson showed a lot of promise last year…maybe the Vikings should trade Favre at the end of the season (first player to play for every team and retire every season).
Of course…we can compare situations all day. I just think McNabb is an excellent QB and looks to still have a lot left in him. I say we trade Vick and try our hardest to hold onto Kolb…if we get a good offer though, I don’t think we can wait. Afterall…it doesn’t have to take too long for someone to be groomed as a started…Tom Brady started his second year and led them to the SuperBowl…we could draft someone this year in the 6th round and they could lead us in two years…who knows…but I think in the end we can only keep one and now is still the time for McNabb.
by justyn725 on Dec 14, 2009 11:34 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I wasnt saying one option is better than the other, just saying its a much more complicated situation than you originally compared it too.
I would love to figure out a way to keep kolb and mcnabb for another 3 years. But its not going to happen, kolb is not going to sign a backup deal, he wants to play and I know there are teams willing to give him some money.
I am not really offering a resolution, bottom line is that this sucks. I really dont know what you do here, I cant see a way that reid trades mcnabb if he continues to play well. And if we trade kolb, I cant see us getting much. MAYBE a late 1st, but even that could be tough considering the qb draft class. Unless some dumb team goes crazy and offers us like a 1st and 2nd for kolb, I dont think we are going to like the resolution of this problem.
by Tbot86 on Dec 14, 2009 11:46 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree…it is a complex situation with probably not clear resolution. I just can’t imagine that a team would trade their franchise QB. Everything has been build up around McNabb and I think he still has a lot left. Not to mention, who would risk taking a veteran QB with a history of injuries when they can just draft someone and train them to their format and have them for a long time.
There is not telling what Kolb really wants, unless you know him. And there really isn’t telling if anybody would actually want him or find a way to fit them into their scheme. Two games just don’t show a whole lot to make a team jump all over someone.
by justyn725 on Dec 14, 2009 11:51 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree with your point on mcnabb, it would be crazy to trade him this offseason. but your assertion that kolb might be ok with being a backup is a little naive.
whether or not he wants to be a starter is not important, its about the money. we wont give him much money to be a back up. some team out there will give him a deal and see if he can be a starter. I dont think he will get a 10 mil a year deal but someone will give him a deal. Theres no doubt in that, there would be almost no risk, all you lose is some money, instead of losing a first round draft pick AND a bunch of money.
by Tbot86 on Dec 14, 2009 12:01 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
We don’t know what anybody really wants. We’re all just guessing. For all we know, Kolb just wants to win and be there is needed…maybe a SuperBowl ring will encourage him to have hopes of starting for the Eagles soon enough.
by justyn725 on Dec 14, 2009 12:04 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Money is pretty universal, people generally want more of it. I think someone would probably pay him 4-5 mil a year, compared to 1-2 mil a year we would pay him to be a back up.
I like the optimism, I would love to keep him and mcnabb around, but I dont think you are being realistic here.
by Tbot86 on Dec 14, 2009 12:09 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Do I have to be realistic when we are all just guessing and estimating? We really don’t know much of anything…and I just want that point made. For all we know, we get to the Superbowl and all three of them get hurt and are out for their careers…anything can happen. We really won’t know anything until it happens.
by justyn725 on Dec 14, 2009 12:14 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed…we dont know anything. But I believe it is safe to assume that someone wants more money, I think theres enough history of people liking money to safely predict that kolb will go where there is more money.
If it makes you feel better, I will say that Kolb is VERY likely to sign with another team rather than backup mcnabb for another 3 years.
and back to the main point, this means it is VERY unlikely to keep both QBs, so I think we are going to be a little pist this offseason.
by Tbot86 on Dec 14, 2009 12:20 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
And its likely that there will be 4-5 posts a week that deal with this same discussion until we get rid of two QBs…

Let’s trade our top 7 QB so we can give our backup who proved he can beat the Chiefs a chance! I’m not even going to argue who is better because Kolb can’t hold a candle to Donovan still in his prime.
I also don’t get how people are still fantasizing about trading Vick. He is a FREE AGENT after this season. Eagles are not picking up his option.

I think your wrong about both those things. The Eagles would be stupid not to pick up his option. 5 Million for a QB with Vick’s potential is a fair price, and it will be easy to trade him.
Secondly, Donavon is an inconsistent QB. Yes, he is healthy and just had a great game, but lets not forget games like he had against SD and Oak…the passes he made last night were more due to having incredibly too much time in the pocket and wide open receivers.
Did you see how open Djax was on that post? Donavon could have lead him another 5 yards and the defender would have had no prayer at the ball.
by Clyde Simmons on Dec 14, 2009 11:27 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
For all we know, Kolb could be the most inconsistent QB in history. Two games really mean nothing. What if he nevers plays another good game again or he throws a thousand picks…he hasn’t been given the chance and I don’t think we can give up on McNabb when he pulls out the wins for our team.

Well, I don’t think we can give up on Kolb when he could be the next Payton Manning either…
Everything about decisions like this are what ifs…. What if Donavon has some years left in the tank? What if he doesn’t? What if Donavon tears his shoulder and never plays again? What if he doesn’t?
For me, getting a haul of picks to make your team better with a backup who has proved himself capable and apparently looks great in practice and every game he has played in is a wise choice for the FRANCHISE.

6 seconds?
The most time Mcnabb had behind the pocket was 4.3 seconds when NBC timed it on the Desean bomb for a TD. How many times did we see Mcnabb elude rushers and complete a pass last night. I think at least 5-6 times he made a play because of his pocket awareness and elusiveness.
The Bears, Redskins and cripple Falcons are the toughest part of our schedule?
Why leave out the Giants game last night? What do you think the toughest part of our schedule is? The first 7 games when we played teams including the Panthers, Bucs, Chiefs, Raiders and Washington?

Wow...
casting me off as a hopeless hater….then insulting my maturity…you sure got me there.
How about the NY, Cowboys, SD, Bears, definitely a much harder schedule, and we dropped 2 of the games.
I don’t even see why this matters…I was just trying to point out how rediculous the statement that Donavon just played well in the toughest part of the schedule…HE LOST to the Raiders and looked incapable of throwing a pass on target that game, or finding any rhythm.
Yes Donavon is a great QB, but he has a lot of flaws including the games he doesn’t show up. Everything is clicking right now, we have a run game, our O-line is playing fantastic, and Donavon is in on top of his game.
All I am saying is that we are in a situation where you have to make a decision on where the future of your franchise is going. Personally, I would rather see this franchise move into a new era by collecting a whole bunch of draft picks to rebuild the defense, and give Kolb a legitimate chance to start, he has more than earned it in my opinion.
If you want to argue about how good Donavon is, and has been, and cast me off as a hater so be it, but that is not what I am trying to do…I agree Donavon has been a great QB for this team and will be in the Eagle Hall of Fame.

Regardless of what I think was a fluke game last night where we looked like a JV team trying to tackle, I still think we have a great defense. Do we have a championship defense though? That’s the important question. A lot of problems that need fixed. The non-pressure and non-tackling last night was very worrisome.

Really??
Earlier in the year he had a QB rating of 55.7 against us and only threw for 222 yards with 1 TD and 2 INTs while only completing 50% of his passes.
Then last year we played him three times and these were his lines:
-17 for 31 for 191 yards with 2 TDs and 1 INT
-13 for 27 for 123 yards with 1 TD and 0 INT
-15 for 29 for 169 yards with 0 TD and 2 INTs
I don’t know, but that doesn’t appear to be like very good lines for a QB. Last night had to be, by far, his best game against us.

Let’s see where to begin again… asi have said in a diff thread… Mcnabb is the best QB in franchise history… Pull your head out of your asses and realise that your watching the best player we have seen in an Eagles uniform… It’s fans like you that give Mcnabb a bad name… When mcnabb went down against carolina kolb had a terrible forth quarter… and i remember all you same fans bashing kolb for his performances last year and the carolina gam… he has 2 good games now your ready to get rid of the best player on our team… you guys are honestly retarded you think that if you read colts/patriots forums they are talking about backup qbs… mcnabb is 33 so is peyton no talks of retirement he still has how many years he wants… you guys will realise what we lost when mcnabb retires… or because of you idiots gets traded… kevin kolb when it came to crunch time against the saints if you remember threw that pick six to basically put us in the unsermountable hole and he had a good game against an abismal kc team…. good for him… you were trying to tar and feather him prior to those starts cuz of his bad play in previous opportunities now your ready to hand him our franchise wow guys… thats all i have to say… heres my advice for all you guys… pull your head out of your ass and actually watch a game… mcnabb is so hard to bring down and hes ever elusive he makes our team go… you say he could have led jackson so the d back had no chance on the ball.. you realise that there is like 60 yards from point a to point b… lets see you say he had a bad game against SD ughm yea cuz 400+ passing yards is a terrible performance… ughm the defense let us down that game allowing san diego to kill 5+ minutes when our offense was scoring uncontrollabley… do what you want say what you want but Mcnabb is the best player we have ever seen in an eagles uniform and just wish you guys could shut up long enough to enjoy watching him play…and to say he has bad games… oh no so does every other player in the league look at manning the last few games he’s been average at best his defense has won most of those prior games…
