Looking back at Eagles-Giants
WOW....Great game by two great teams. Most people expected a hard fought low scoring game but 83 points and over 850 yards of total offense? Un-freakin-believable. This was one of the most exciting and heart racing games I can remember. Thoughts and highlights after the jump...
Referees: It is astounding how the refs have been robbing us all year. Not only are we playing against the other team but referees as well. It started from week one when they didn't call that late hit on Mcnabb in the end zone. They have been calling that religiously when it's been happening to other "elite" quarterbacks. Cowboys game, the freakin' Vice President of Football Officiating admitted that the 4th & inches call was blown. This game I can recall at least 3 huge blown or missed calls. First one, the CLEAR pass interference on Celek in the end zone that cost us the touchdown. Second, Mcnabb's clear incomplete pass that was ruled a fumble and stole 10 yards away from us. Third, the Eagles recovered the kickoff return fumble with clearly 3 seconds left on the clock and they called end of half without reviewing it. I know I'm forgetting at least one more huge one but I will however mention the Trent Cole penalty and DQ at the end was ridiculous. O'Hara punched/shoved Cole first, then ripped off Cole's helmet and Trent gets DQ'ed? Incredibly stupid. Seriously, what is it? Is it because we signed Michael Vick or something?
Whatever zebras, Eff you, we're winning any way!
Offense: Is it any contest who the best WR and QB is in the division? DJax had 6 catches for 178 yard and 1 TD. Mcnabb, other than the INT and big miss to Reggie for a potential TD, had a huge game as well with over 65% completion, 275 yards, 2 TDs and a 110 QB rating. Yes, I know the Giants secondary isn't that good but still, those are impressive numbers nonetheless. I will never cease to be amazed with how many great throws he completes after eluding rushers. In my opinion, that ability of his greatly outmatches a couple balls in the feet/dirt. I don't think we have to worry about comeback victories or ability to sustain long drives after the last 4 games. That 91 yard drive in the 3rd/4th quarter sealed the game. That trick play with Vick in the end zone almost hitting Brown for the TD was awesome even if it was incomplete. If Vick threw it a little bit earlier would've been a TD. He is getting better as the weeks go and its noticeable. He definitely is helping us win games in the second half of the season. This offense as expected is truly top 3 in the league when playing up to their ability. Biggest negative for the offense this game was losing Maclin to a foot injury.
Defense: Defense was a completely different story. Gave up over 500 yards of total offense, albeit the Giants had a time of possession advantage of over 9 minutes. Eagles have one of the best run defenses in the league yet they were out muscled by the Giants running attack that was missing all year. Eli had one of his best games of his career against our secondary. What the hell is up with Mikell? He was one of the best strong safeties last year, and this year he is dropping, picks, missing tackles and committing stupid penalties. Sean Jones as well had a bad game with some huge missed tackles as well. Can we please sign Atogwe next year unless a miracle happens and we draft Berry? Our safety play has been below average and will be picked apart against good offenses. Spoon also had a bad game. Missed that tackle on Hixon's long TD and blew the coverage on Boss for the TD. This defense is one stud DE on the left end and one stud free safety away from being the best in the league.
Special Teams: With much respect to Joshua Cribbs, Desean is hands down the best punt returner in the NFL. Every time he touches the ball in open space you can expect a huge return. Over 250 all purpose yards against the Giants. The guy is God-like on the field. I don't think I will ever get used to him chest bumping Reid. Hilarious! Eldra Buckley is probably our best in return coverage. He is almost always the first guy to get to the ball carrier. Much props go to him for that.
Other thoughts...
Saints look extremely beatable and so do the Vikings. Cardinals are looking pretty scary as well but still beatable. Eagles are the winning-est team ever at Giants Stadium. Let's continue that trend to their new stadium next year. 4 straight victories and this was supposed to be the tough part of our schedule. Should be fairly easy games if the Eagles play at least decent against the Niners and Broncos. As for the Cowboys.....Ain't December a bitch for y'all! Yeeee Haw!!
P.S. I know I'm missing some stuff, feel free to add in the comments.

i was extremely disappointed with Q and Trent
Two of my favorite players with a completely horrible day.
Great note on the trick play with Vick. It was indeed awesome and was what I expected when we signed him. Those trick plays. That one and the reverse to donovan to pass.
RIP Jim Johnson. You will truly be missed.

Trent?
He had a great game. Forced the fumble that resulted in Sheldon’s recovery TD and had a couple crucial tackles. He is absolutely outstanding every single game. Can’t have anything negative to say about Trent. If you are referring to what happened at the end of the game, O’Hara threw the punch first. That DQ and penalty was bullshit.
Andy Reid is 43-5 when running the ball at least 30 times in a game( Ray Diddy on Eagles Post Game Live after Bears Victory)
Trent should know better. I don’t care who started it, they will get their just desserts. But usually its the 2nd guy that gets caught, and caught the worst. Trent literally threw two punches in line of sight to a ref.

O’Hara was being a sore loser, he deserved the retaliation by Cole. It was after the game was won so Trent didn’t cost us anything except getting DQ’ed with 8 seconds left and possibly paying a fine. That incident shouldn’t take away anything from Cole having a great game.

yea
the last play was what I was referring to

The fumble and 10 yard loss.
It was warranted, especially with the explanation they had given. It was in fact a fumble and they did call the play dead (and thankfully no one recovered the ball).

No it wasn't....
Replays showed his arm was moving forward. Definitely incomplete pass. Two of the referees called it incomplete on the field. Why do you think nobody dove on the ball?

the replayed showed it getting knocked from his hand…don’t know if you can call that a bad call. Replace that bad call with the non-offsides call when the giants had the ball near the goal line and you’re back to three.
the replayed showed it getting knocked from his hand
With his arm moving forward, which is an incomplete pass. If it was a fumble, why the hell did they blow the play dead? Someone could have recovered it. They changed the call AFTER the play was dead. That was a moronic call either way.

It may have been the wrong call (although I’m not convinced it was), however to say that was a call that exemplifies biased officiating is a bit harsh. That is the type of play that usually ends up being challenged to get it right. Also, one of the referees ruled it a fumble. I do, however, agree that overall the refs were told to help the giants. I was shocked they didn’t call manning down by contact after review. Other notable call:
Jackson was headbutted by defender after the play was over. Sure he was taunting the giant, but Asante got called for a 15 yard unsportsmanlike against the giants a few weeks ago for having fun with Brandon Jacobs (got in his face after a play). I don’t think it was really malicious, and Desean definitely acted when he fell, but I expect consistency from officiating crews. If there was consistency, then that should have been an unsportsmanlike conduct.
Jackson was talking crap...
and he flopped too.
Gotta say, this isn’t the NBA. You pull that crap, they ain’t gonna call it.
It was better for the game they didn’t call that a 15 yarder.

Just want to say, one of the biggest reason why we’re on a 4 game winning streak is that McNabb FINALLY found some consistency. Over his last four game, McNabb has
-75/118 att/com for a completion percentage of 63.6
-997 yards thrown, with a YPA of 8.4
-6 TD to 3 Int
-A passer rating of 96.6
And his last four game as far as passer rating is 110.3, 101.8, 80.7, and 101.3. Three of the last four games has been 100+ and his only mediocre passer rating doesn’t really indicated how well he played that game (vs. Redskins).
RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.
i hate to say it
but while i put we’re on par with all the other top teams…
we would’ve been killed by a potent offense today like the colts, saints, vikings….
our secondary was awful and while we gave up A LOT of points today it could’ve been much worse if not for some bad throws and awful drops on their part. we were lucky we were playing the giants. our d needs to get in shape if we wanna contend deep into the playoffs. if we do this, we can beat any team in the nfl.

Yeah we let Hakeem nicks and Steve Smith beat us
Imagine what Reggie Wayne or Marques Colston would do
I love how no one gives our guys credit.
Steve Smith did was Steve Smith does.
And well…if Hakeem Nicks was Colston/Wayne…they make those catches that he dropped (and the wide open deep bombs were not the only ones, so he didn’t make up for all of them).

I agree; the Giants’ offense hasn’t been their problem this year. They’ve got good players. Not that the Eagles D did anything resembling a good job, but you’ve gotta give credit to the Giants as well. Eli Manning was on fire. The Eagles missed a crapload of tackles, but most of those were already big gains even before the whiffs.
Great game.
I lost my voice during it.
I think it was a better effort than last time no?
The Giants defense is sure as hell a shell of what it once was. If they were playing 2-hand touch with McNabb, he still wouldn’t have been sacked (this is a joke IMO…)
I’m more pissed not that we lost (tho I’m pissed at that), but more for the missed opps the Giants had.
I still can’t believe why Eli Manning’s receivers don’t catch the ball consistently?
Do you guys see that sort of thing with McNabb? I doubt that you do.
Either way, that was a show for the ages.
The only thing I know I’ll take out if it, is Eli finally figured your defense out. Its just a shame that the defense still can’t figure itself out.
So…good luck the rest of the way. And beat Dallas. Cuz I’m thinking that as much as you guys wanna play the GIants again…I want the Giants to play the Eagles in January a whole lot more.

Great Gm.
Lets Stop Knocking the Win…..The Giants are a good team we beat them period……….We Just gotta do better on D and we will be fine. We can play with anyone in this league.
