Eagles vs. Giants prediction thread

Micro-breakdown (based in part on DVOA)

What the Eagles do:

Offense - Balance running and passing well, tend to exploit the opponent's weakness rather than dictate play on our own terms.  WR playmakers.  Overall a big-play offense which, on those game when big plays do not happen, looks crappy

Defense - Stop both the pass and the run well, rush the passer, generate turnovers in the passing game.  Awesome against WRs, ok against TEs, poor against RB in the receiving game.

Special teams - hidden weapon this year, great in KOs and Punt returns, above average overall in everything else.

What the Giants do:

Offense - Pass the ball well, run the ball ok, some passing to RB.  TE average in catching the ball.  Most passing damage to their WRs, where 3 different WRs have at least 4 TD catches.  Don't give up a lot of sacks (less than 5% of passes result in sacks)

Defense - Just ok overall, average against both the pass and run.  DL living off previous seasons' reputation as pass rushers, not so much this year, though still above average.

Special teams - Hidden weakness this year, Above average in punt returns, poor in punt and kickoff coverage.

Prediction:

Eagles get short fields and big plays.  Giants go into halftime down by 10.  Eagles let up in 3rd quarter and Giants tie it up.  Eagles go ahead in 4th and late INTs by Eli makes the ending score bigger than the game actually was.  Possible DJax punt return for TD.

Eagles 34

Giants 20

Already gave my prediction eleswhere

Eagles will beat the Giants 31-21 (and this is from a Giants fan). Just not going to get it done after beating Dallas… a letdown will occur.

what is 19?

One TD and 4 FG’s?

Or 2 TD’s a FG and a safety

either way, I’m sticking with 19

That would be an excellent trivia question

And on that note, the three of you are missing one.

19 extra points

or a single HUGE 19 point BOMB down the sideline

Simple.

so many people are predicting a three way tie in the east at the end of this weekend. they forgot that the eagles are a lot better team then the giants and going to beat them

by eaglesinmd on Dec 11, 2009 4:34 PM EST reply actions

Prediction

McNabb gets injured in 1st half
Kolb takes over and has a +300 yrd game
Eli plays with himself
Trent Cole eats Eli
Andy Reid has gastric bypass surgery on the sideline

Prediction!

I will much prefer to see the Eagles have more points on the scoreboard by the end of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarters then the alternative.

by cwel87 on Dec 11, 2009 6:15 PM EST reply actions

Tight One.

I predict a game that is great for the defenses and frustrating for both offenses. Lots of field goals, an ugly game, and a low score.

Eagles 16 (TD, 3 FG)
Giants 13 (TD, 2 FG)

Could just as easily be the other way ’round, though.

Prediction...

McNabb Throws 2 TD’s to Jackson and Celek
Weaver and shady both have big TD runs
Akers misses 2 45 yd.+ FG’s in the kicker hellhole

Eli throws 1 td 2 Int’s
Hixon has a nice punt return to the goal line, we hold them to 3
Giants score in final 3 minutes but miss 2 pt. conversion.

Score: Eagles 28 Giants 16

Gotta represent here.....

Giants 24-Eagles 20.

No real basis, Eagles playing well, GIants I have no clue, cuz beating the Cowboys sure as shit isn’t all that big a deal.

I think the Giants get off the field more than the Eagles on third down. I think both offenses are like ‘lobotomized field mice trying to run across a road’ in the red zone. I guess I’m saying the Giants get 8 FG’s, the Eagles 6 (and a safety). No TD’s.

No turnovers. No big plays. Just flat out NFC East annoyance.

O.

and the Giants defense gets to McNabb for once (well….4 sacks and they get their hits in too).

No turnovers and no big plays?

The eagles have had 20 ints and 8 forced fumbles and recovered 11 total.
The giants have had 9 ints and 16 forced fumbles and recovered all 16.

Eagles offense has thrown 9 ints and lost 2 fumbles.
Giants offense has thrown 11 ints and lost 4 fumbles

Based on all of that, I think it is a pretty easy call that there will be some turnovers.

Im not going to even comment on the big plays.

by worldphuckinchamps on Dec 12, 2009 2:35 AM EST up reply actions

actually i will get into big plays...

Scores from 20 or more yards out:
Week 1: DJax 85 yd punt return for TD
Week 2: DJax 71 yd reception for TD
Week 3: DJax 64 yd reception for TD
Celek 35 yd reception for TD
Week 4: BYE
Week 5: Maclin 51 yd reception for TD
Weaver 20 yd reception for TD
Maclin 40 yd reception for TD
Week 6: N/A
Week 7: DJax 68 yd run for TD
DJax 57 yd reception for TD
Week 8 (VS GIANTS): Weaver 41 yd run for TD
DJax 54 yd reception for TD
Maclin 23 yd reception for TD
McCoy 66 yd run for TD
Week 9: N/A
Week 10: N/A
Week 11: DJax 48 yd reception for TD
Week 12: DJax 35 yd reception for TD
Week 13: Sheldon Brown 83 yd interception returned for TD

Now if you can do some simple mathematics you will be able to tell that there have been 16 plays for touchdowns that have been 20 yds or more. The Eagles have played 12 games, so on average the Eagles have 1.33 big plays per game. This is not including all of the long runs and receptions that have not resulted in a touchdown on that individual play.

by worldphuckinchamps on Dec 12, 2009 3:23 AM EST up reply actions

congrats on the big plays before this week.

I really…really care about them………

You really think this game is gonna go to this ‘trend’?

I don’t care about records. I don’t care about stats. I don’t care who’s won the past 3 games (and the past 3 games before that :)…)

This is gonna be a nutbuster of a game.

And I ain’t gonna tell you where you can go an shove the mathematics.

by FreeBradshaw on Dec 12, 2009 7:55 AM EST up reply actions

The 'throw all the records out' cliche makes no sense, though

And neither does the ‘nerd in the basement’ horseshit.

They’re predictive values in determining a winner. The Eagles are a significantly better team, so it makes sense they have better numbers. And, by the way, the whole ‘streaking’ argument is something nobody cares about except ESPN stat diggers. Past winners have absolutely no impact whatsoever on the outcome of any following game, unless we’re dealing with a playoff series. Alas, this is football.

Can the Giants win? Absolutely. Do they have a better chance then the Eagles? No.

Champs is merely illustrating the point that your ‘no big plays, no turnovers’ argument is reliant on some alternate reality. Which it is.

by cwel87 on Dec 12, 2009 10:14 AM EST up reply actions

He's using 'predictive values'

crap to predict an unpredictable game.

And if you’ve been paying attention to the history of this series, the ‘throw the records out’ sure as shit makes sense.

It doesn’t matter if either team is undefeated and the other has no wins, the other can win.

And yea, I don’t care about the streaking thing either….cuz I usually go by those things gotta end.

Have you heard of probabilities?

No, they can’t predict exactly what will happen. And, yes, anything can happen on any given sunday (I’m pretty sure that Eagles fans know that too well), but their is a significant likelihood that there will be some big plays and turnovers.

I am merely stating that it will most likely not happen. In football today, if you see no turnovers and no big plays, it is a rarity.

Although you do not care about stats, I thought I would enforce my statistical belief…

Heres Giants scores from 20 or more yds out:
Week 1: Manningham 30 yd reception for TD
Umenyiora 37 yd fumble return for TD
Week 2: B. Johnson 34 yd int returned for TD
Manningham 22 yd reception for TD
S. Smith 22 yd reception for TD
Week 4: S. Smith 25 yd reception for TD
Nicks 54 yd reception for TD
Week 5: Manningham 30 yd reception for TD
Week 6: Nicks 37 yd reception for TD
Week 7: Nicks 62 yd reception for TD
Week 10: BYE
Week 11: Boss 28 yd reception for TD
Week 13: Nicks 21 yd reception for TD
Jacobs 74 yd reception for TD
Hixon 79 yd punt return for TD

and in case that was not enough, heres the cowboys too… just for good measure

Cowboys
Week 1: Austin 42 yd reception for TD
Williams 66 yd reception for TD
Crayton 80 yd reception for TD
Week 3: Newman 27 yd int return for TD
Week 5: Choice 36 yd run for TD
Austin 59 yd reception for TD
Austin 60 yd reception for TD
Week 6: BYE
Week 7: Austin 59 yd reception for TD
Austin 22 yd reception for TD
Crayton 73 yd punt return for TD
Week 8: Hurd 36 yd reception for TD
Crayton 82 yd punt return for TD
Week 9: Austin 49 yd reception for TD
Week 12: Jones yd run for TD
Week 13: Austin 22 yd reception for TD

Dallas D has 8 int’s and 10 fumble recoveries
Dallas O has thrown 7 picks and lost 3 fumbles

throw out ALL history in an NFC East showdown…

pretty much what I'm getting at...

and I don’t understand all these stats being thrown at me.

I know what the stats are…and the amount that I care about them is rushing to my cesspool right now.

They may predict the outcome…I dunno. They may not. Congrats on all the highlights and all a that….

Who the hell knows? I know Weaver’s a good player, but who the hell saw the 41 yd TD run last time?

Maybe somebody on the Eagles F’s up this time and Danny Ware takes one to the house?

That’s what I’m thinking this one comes down too. Something unexpected.

My bad

I didn’t read all the way down to your replies, so sorry about throwing more stats at you and arguing like an ass hole

Im just saying games without any big plays or turnovers doesn’t happen very much anymore…

exactly!!!!!!

I know.

And that’s why I’m saying this game will be a shit-fest devoid of them.

"no real basis"

why the fk are you arguing with him for no reason. he made half hearted prediction and even said it was of no real basis. we don’t need to argue with people just because they’re a fan of a team we don’t like. choose your battles man.

"Eagles fans are a passionate group who love their team," said McNabb, "if not the actual players. It's not like winning a Super Bowl before the first month of the season is the hardest thing they've ever asked of me. That'd be all those times they asked me to go kill myself."

by greenbean#twoOH on Dec 12, 2009 1:35 PM EST up reply actions

He made a point and I made a counter argument.
It seemed a bit out of reality to me so I voiced my opinion.

by worldphuckinchamps on Dec 12, 2009 5:28 PM EST up reply actions

In case you hadn’t noticed on that list of bigplays there was one game that didnt follow the norm

Week 8 (VS GIANTS): Weaver 41 yd run for TD
DJax 54 yd reception for TD
Maclin 23 yd reception for TD
McCoy 66 yd run for TD

me thinks the trend continues :)

GO EAGLES

Damn, I need a shower.

But still, better it be a 2 team race than a 3 team race.

2009 Dallas Cowboys: 10-6
2009 New York Jets: not 11-5 :(
2009-2010 Dallas Mavericks: 57-25

winner take all

who ever wins this game takes the east. dallas has to play san diego, n.o. and the eagles. they’re not keeping the crown. also you better hope the eagles win so the giants don’t take the cowboys wild card spot.
