Philadelphia Eagles @ San Diego Chargers

We need this one in a bad way.  Unfortunately, we are travelling out west, and the last two times we did that, we failed.  What do you guys make of this matchup?

I know San Diego used to have an amazing secondary, but Jammer and Cromartie don't seem to be great anymore, and the Chargers are struggling at safety (right?).  Merriman has been up and down, but how scary is that pass rush?  Will we be able to handle them.

What can we do against that offense?  Rivers is erratic under pressure, but we'll have to worry about Sproles out of the backfield.  And how do we slow down Antonio Gates?

Thoughts?  The only thing that will get my mind off the aberration that was last night is the thought of next week

I hate saying this...

…but this game all depends on what eagles team decides to show up. The chargers are definitely beatable, but I can say that about any team.

Im trying real hard 2 stay positive...............

but this no doubt is gonna be tuff game. The one thing i am hopin for is maybe the Chargers have a letdown after coming off such an emotional win. Sumtimes teams bounce off of big wins. Much like the birds did after beating the Giants in the playoffs last year.
This freakin game has SCARY written all over it, lets hope Merriman wasnt awoken last week as he looked as good as has all season. Their LBs are pretty good (at least compared to ours they are) and their offensive weapons are pretty freakin nasty. I see at least 100 yds for Gates and if Asante isnt healthy we could be in for a long day against Rivers, this cat is just straight up a great competitor and the fire and drive inside him makes me very envious compared 2 wat we have at the QB position. That all being said tho u are right, depending on wat Eagles team shows up is the million dollar question. If we bring our big boy offense and control the line of scrimmage i think we can score on them all day, unfortunately i see the same for San Diego. This game is either gonna be a crazy shootout in which we win or it will be a complete blowout with them havin us beat early in the 3d quarter.

I really see us struggling in this game. its a long trip and we just had a devastating loss. plus, the chargers just pulled off a miracle win, which should do a lot for their confidence. we really need this one badly.

San Diego Native..

I’m a Boys fan..but you’ll have to forgive me that for this post.

     1. Home field advantage – This isn’t extremely overpowering at Qualcomm. It’s certainly a venue and Chargers fans show that even So Cal teams can have a rowdy fan base..but they are not a huge x-factor.

      2. Run Defense – The Eagles unfortunately look like they may not be able to capitalize on the weakest part of the Chargers team. They lost their Pro-bowl Nose tackle early on and they have really been hurt by inside runs all year. Their line backers are also sometimes undisciplined on gap responsibility and can really get gashed on draws and delays.

      3. Pass rush – Merriman is having a down year. He was battling a groin injury apparently this year but he still hasn’t required a double team too often this year. On the other side..J. Tucker/L. English have not lived up to their billing and have very rarely been able to capitalize on the rare Merriman Double team. The Eagles shouldn’t need to keep Celek or RBs in too often to keep McNabb standing.

     4. Pass Defense – Pretty decent.. not great, especially seems to have lost their Ball-hawking skills that they had a couple of seasons ago. Weddle is coming along at safety. This is a decent unit but certainly capable of being beaten up by a good speed guy or screens.

    5. O – line – very shaky. They have had injuries all over the line and are currently playing rookies and second stringers pretty regularly. While the fill ins have played admirably, they are very questionable against stunts, crosses, 2 blitzers.. a lot of things that Philly likes to do should be effective.

   6. Running game – nearly non existent. Neither LT nor Darren Sproles has been able to get anything consistent going as the line has done a poor job of making holes. The running game relies more on the cuts and spin moves of their running game than a fundamentally sound game plan. This should be no problem for the eagles..get used to lots of off tackle runs for 1 – 3 yds.

  7. Passing game – the most dangerous phase of the game. If you haven’t taken the time to watch Rivers in action..you’ll understand this week why you should be thanking Eli for demanding the trade that meant the NFC east didn’t have to play this guy twice a year. He has great accuracy and throws the deep bomb as well if not better than Drew Brees. He makes quick decisive reads and can really pick apart the seems of a zone. Vincent Jackson is the true number one and has some of the best hands going. Nene, Gates, and Malcom Floyd are all dangerous as well as Darren sproles coming out of the backfield.

  8. ST – Nate Kaeding is pretty automatic. Darren sproles is best suited as a punt returner and it is probably advisable to kick it away from him like the giants did. Mike Scifres is consistantly one of the top 3 punters in the league and he really helps the field position game.

If Philly can get a good pass rush..I see them being able to cause turnovers and get points of the turnovers. Having westbrook back would help a lot and also using the FB who had a big game against the giants would probably be good for runs up the gut since that is the most glaring weakness of this San Diego Team.

Prediction …

im a charger fan first, eagle fan second

so i want the chargers to win but i still love the eagles.

anyways,
you forgot about shaun phillips, he is opposite of merriman and he leads the team with 5 sacks and has a couple force fumbles.

jammer is a stud corner, cromartie is soft but can sometimes make plays.
weddle is a stud and cooper is really solid but he is banged up.

the best bet for the eagles would be to run right up the middle.

and on defense attack the center, their starter, hardwick, is still out and probably wont play this game.

Teams seem to have less trouble traveling west than traveling east.

Going west is 3 hours later game time than typical…which most teams get to see pretty regularly with night games.

Going east.. teams play 3 hours earlier than they’re used to and it seems to throw teams off

imminy said it best

Whichever Eagles offense shows up will win or lose the game. Is it the one who cant score a TD vs OAK or put up 40 against the Gmen?

charger fan here

but I love the eagles too… my 2nd favorite team from back in the cunningham days. Here’s the quick scoop on my bolts:

Overall – Struggle against physical teams on offense and on defense. Consistently lose time of possession, but can score quickly from anywhere on field. Had a rash of injuries in week one, will be close to full strength against Eagles.

Run D – was a weakness when Jamal went down, now I’d say we are about average with a healthy rotation of capable NTs filling in. We will be getting 2 of our top 3 ILBs back for Eagle game which should help. We can be dominated at line by physical teams.

Pass D – A strength, with the exception of covering TE’s. Our corners have been playing very well. Our safeties are undersized, but Weddle plays with a lot of heart.

Pass Rush – Has come alive recently in a big way… 7 sacks first 5 games… 15 sacks last 3 games. Merriman looks like hes close to full strength. Phillips has been playing solid. Our 1st RD pick English can get after the QB too… Lots of safey blitzes of late.

Run O: Biggest weakness. Tomlinson has lost a step, but biggest culprit is a finess O-Line playing through injuries. We will have all starting O-Line in for first time all year in Eagle game with our center Hardwick most likely to return. Sproles is good for 5-10 carries game, max. Hester is undersized for FB.

Pass O: Biggest strength. Rivers is fearless. He’ll throw it anywhere, and his receivers are so big they come down with the ball most of the time. Vincent Jackson is an absolute beast. Think TO, but taller and with better hands. Floyd is 6’5 too. Gates is having solid year. Great screen team w/ Sproles and LT. We’ve gone up against some of the best CBs in the league, and don’t back down from any of them.

Special Teams – some good some bad. Have allowed some big returns this year. Scifres is a weapon, he consistently pins opponents inside their 10. Kaeding is automatic on field goals, but comes up short on kickoffs.

Coaching – I’ll probably get shot in SD for saying this, but I like Norv. He’s not much of a motivator, but his teams improve over the course of the year and he’s a good play caller. Rivera is improving as the season goes on. Calling more blitzes of late.

Good luck iggles!

Vincent Jackson

Scares the crap out of me. We let Roy Williams and an undrafted free agent beat us. Imagine what Jackson could do.

I know San Diego used to have an amazing secondary, but Jammer and Cromartie don’t seem to be great anymore

Jammer may be 30 but he’s still very good and Cromartie is only 25 and is also good. We have lots of speed but they have lots of size both are big corners.

Weddle is a great safety but is better suited against the run, but he can cover too. The biggest issue with San Diegos defense that I have seen is that there front was getting no push. They got through against the Giants and we need to make sure that doesn’t happen. Like all defenses you take away the front line and you can do damage.

I have to agree immynimmy the Chargers really have no say in who wins or loses this game it depends on which Eagles team decides to take the field.
