Dallas Offense: Are you ready McDermott?
Sunday will show us more about McDermott than any game this year. Or at least, any game except one:
| Total Plays | 65 |
| Total Yards | 421 |
| Passing | 288 |
| Rushing | 133 |
OK, so every other game, the D has shown up big, giving up an average of 14 ppg if you take that one away. FO analysis backs this idea up, giving the Eagles the #1 ranking to date according to their metrics. Other than that one game, this defense has been by any measure great. But there is that one game.
In the defense of the defense, there were 4 turnovers that game by the offense. In prosecution of the defense, they gave up 8.4 yards per pass play and 4.6 yards per rush, while generating only 2 sacks. That ain't gonna cut it.
So, NO has, by FO standards, the 2nd best offfense in the league. So, do we cut them slack? Well, if we do we have to admit that all their domination came against terrible offenses. The only above average offense we did well against was the Giants (#15). So, that's 1-0 against good offenses, 0-1 against great ones.
The trouble is that Dallas has a better offense than does the Giants, ranking #5 overall. We know that McDermott can coach defense. To be honest, I was quite worried about him before the season began, and he's calmed a lot of my fears to date. But he was frankly totally out coached in the Saints game.
Dallas comes in with a balanced attack, big play weapons, and a terrific running back who can pound the ball. There not a cutsie as the Saints, but here's a chance for redemption. Will he rise to the occasion? Will he even the score against great offenses?
Good Luck, McD!

A few things going on betweenwhat happened with the Saints and Cowboys
The Defense takes risks…(not only blitzing, but our CBs read the QB over covering the WR at times) its up to the QB to get the ball out quick and on target.
Drew Breeze is not only a top 3 QB in the league, but also was playing in a dome.
Romo is not always accurate, likes to hold onto the ball and will be playing in Philly where even on a nice day will have some wind to effect the flight of some passes.
At Dallas I will be a lot more worried, but it’ll basically come down to can we cover the RB screens and quick passes to whitten mostly and can Romo run around long enough to attempt a couple deep balls.

Basically, I think the Saints game was a learning process for McDermott
He got away from pressuring the quarterback, and it burned the team. Badly.
As long as he stays aggressive, I’m not concerned. I had similar concerns about Sean at the start of the season after watching that vanilla preseason defense, but he’s quashed just about every one of them. The only game I took issue with his playcalling thus far this year was the Saints game, but it was admittedly about as atrocious a gameplan as could have been made against that particular team.

i think it's a bit harsh to dismiss mcdermott as being outcoached against NO
i think he was just simply outgunned. drew brees has been playing at a HOF level for the last 4 years, and with a guy like that, when you give him 4 turnovers to work with, points are gonna come.
human beings, who are almost unique in their ability to learn from the experiences of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

I dont think you can judge an OC/DC in a blow out.(Either way)
To me the upper echeleon guys seem to know when to dial up the right play at the right time when the game is tight. Or show up biggest in the big games.
Jim Johnson was a guy that always seem to have a few tricks left in his bag. Always had a blitz that would end a drive at a key time.
McDermont probably needs another season before you can assess him. He definitely has some growing pains coming. Hopefully he will suffer those growing pains this weekend and Jan 3rd.
KICK ASS every day!!!

Also
It’s a little hard to defend against a QB is better against a blitz than any other QB in the league. That offense is hard to defend against. We got lit up but a lot of teams that have played the Saints have as well.
This game is different, it’s Tony Romo, good QB but I think it isn’t hard to get in his head.

LMAO!! In all your dreams...
The philly D is gonna get torched. The BOYS have more weapons than the SAINTS. Remember this when you all are drunk and pissed that the Boys ran over you. Romo will have 300 yds as well as our stable of backs stampeding over your weak lb corps for 150+ yds. Not to mention our D which is a far better team than the RAIDERS. LOL the RAIDERS. please dont beat up any fans in wheelchairs, you classless fans.

nope, but I do remember when the birds kicked the cowboys ass 44-6 and got into the playoffs. I also know that 2 or 3 of Romo’s worst career games come against the eagles. I also know that our defense is number one in the league according to DVOA.
oh…and last year the eagles tied the bengals!! lol, the bengals! but they still ended your season in a pummeling.

LAST YEAR
now that you are bringing up the past, i do recall all those chapionships the iggles have. oh wait. sorry i was thinking about someone else. have the iggles ever one a title?

You guys haven't proven anything to anyone
Your best win was against the Falcons whose defense is terrible. Congrats, you scored a lot of points on a bad defense. And now you’re going to argue that your stellar defense shut down their offense? They put up 300 yards and 21 points on your defense. Miami, New England, and Chicago all held the Falcons to less than that.
So if you want to talk THIS year, you haven’t proven anything!
Oh yeah, we lost to the Raiders…bad game. Why don’t you go run around and brag about your win over Kansas City because that was impressive!

This year proved
you lost to the raiders. a team with a subpar D and no offense. Kansas city was a win none the less.
as far as the falcons, when you kick off to a team as much as we did due to all the scores, of course they are gonna get yds and pts.
that game was a blowout anyway. just like sunday will be. Boys 34 Philly 16 with philly scores late in the 4th when we have our backups getting practice.

Teams lose inexplicable games sometimes
last year the Giants clinched the #1 seed in the NFC, but lost to the miserable Browns in front of a national audience on Monday night.
Yep, we lost to the Raiders…and picked up the pieces.
I could be an ass, and say, “I see a HUGE BLOWOUT”…but that’s stupid.
Both teams are talented, if you can’t admit that, then you’re a homer, and you have no clue.
Realistically, this game could go either way. I expected to split games with Dallas coming into the season, and my expectations haven’t changed. Usually I expect the home team to win.

the eagles kicked off to the hapless cowboys a lot when they put up 44 on the boys, but your team still only mustered up 6 points. you know why? because the eagles defense was talented last year.
by the way…the weakness of oakland is the O, not the D. the D would be ok if they weren’t on the field for 45 minutes a game.
by eagleyosh on Nov 7, 2009 2:37 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Their D is ranked 30th and their O is ranked 32nd.
They are just not good.

I didn’t say they’re D is good…I said it would be good if they weren’t on the field for 45 minutes a game. That’s football 101..if your D is always on the field, they’re going to give up yard and points and have a bad ranking.

past years
while we are talking bout the past…according to history, cowboys have made iggles their bitc#! as far as this year…but c’mon the raiders. lol. if russell and co can spank you…

seriously
you guys have been very impressive this year.
-That victory over Kansas City should put fear in the hearts of all your future opponents.
-The way you shut down Eli Manning, holding him to only 330 yards of offense is really worrisome!
-Gosh, if Mario Manningham could only manage 150 yards against your stellar secondary I can only imagine how badly you’re going to shut down DeSean and Maclin
-Your stable of running backs smashed through Denver with 53 yards on 23 carries
Yeah, we have a lot of reasons to fear you

Oh you mean...
Like McCoy 14 for 37 yards against Washington?
Or how about the 20-something balls thrown in the dirt by McNabb against Oakland (and most other games)?
Maybe you meant you should be afraid of us for our KC performance like we should be afraid of you for your classic game against Oakland.
It goes both ways kid.
by ChrisRichey on Nov 7, 2009 4:26 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Oh, I COMPLETELY agree
it goes both ways. Listen, I won’t say for a minute that I’ve been impressed by the Eagles with the exception of a couple performances.
I was simply replying to that Cowboy homer above who said:
you lost to the raiders. a team with a subpar D and no offense. Kansas city was a win none the less.

Not really
It might be a big game for the Cowboys because they have to get their sorry asses back to Philadelphia and prove they are better then 44-6.
For the Eagles, it’s really ho-hum. See, we’re used to playing – and winning – games that matter.
Sorry.

Giants are on a 3 game slide.

yes
discount the eagles victories because the giants are on a 3 game slide, and discount the cowboys poor play because they played a good defense. You do realize to be the best you have to beat the best, right?

plus
who really cares. all of this will be settled tomorrow night, until the next time the two play. none of us really have any influence. we’ll argue til we’re blue the face, but it really is pointless.
