Matt Mosley, Adam Caplan, any journalist really, let the true good hearted Eagles fans have a voice.
Hey Guys,
We recently have had a couple of issues that have touched alot of us and kind of got our irish up over the last few days. I'm talking about our reputations as hecklers, jerks, and overall terrible people. I want this post to be an open forum for anyone who monitors this site to hear what the true civil Eagles fans have to say. Too long have the 7-10% of our fanbase that have no human-respect, made us out to be animals. I know there are fans on here who have been fans for over 20 yrs, (I'm 17 yrs and strong myself, I don't count my first 4 yrs of life because I barely remember) so let your voice be heard. I just think we need to let the Skip Bayless's of the world know they are wrong about a majority of us. We have fans that are just appauling and we pay for their sins. So below if you have anything good natured or want to get something off your chest about the fan base good or bad, post here. I'm not trying to start a riot, I just think its important to know we can take pride in knowing we have brothers of this wonderful Fraternity called the Philadelphia Eagles Fanbase, that are truly good and respectable human beings.

I guess my turn first.
I much like the former 700 Level, have been disgusted with the negativity surrounding our fanbase. I think I’m a human being first and then an Eagles fan, the separation is barely there but I have the common decency to be cordial to opposing fans. Yes, Giants fan can be terrible people, as can Skins and Pats and Cowboy fans, but we seem to not have any escape from our disposition as the biggest jerks in sports. I believe that being a good fan means keeping a respectful distance from other team’s fans, let them enjoy the beating “The Desean Jackson Show” puts on them and maybe give a quick jab but other than that keep your space. I’m not some CareBear but I just think enough is enough, its irritating to deal with stupid, mostly uneducated Eagles “supporters.” I guarantee you the jerk fans that make up a minority of our population don’t know who players like Mike Quick, Troy Vincent, or hell Reno Mahe or Todd Pinkston are. Its truly despicable. But I know a lot of my Bleeding Green Nation peers are good dudes and dudetts so let our voices be heard.

It's self fulfilling
The media keeps repeating the same old memes about how rough the sports fan are here and so then a few drunken idiots get pumped up by the reputation and try to live up to it. Then the media gets some more fodder to bash our fans with.

I don't think we can ever get past Santa Claus and the Boo-Birds.
But you can ridicule it.
Hear me out: The stereotype has been set and it isn’t going away. Deserved or not, it’s been here too long and journalists are far too lazy to correct an image that works for them on a national level.
So instead maybe we should start nicknaming sections of the statium for ‘baby eaters’, ‘cannibals’, ‘murderers row’, ‘convicts’, ‘press box terrorists’ and the likes. Many more signs reading ‘Kill Buck’ and ‘BOO ESPN’ should be out in the stands. We should make public displays of burning the other teams in effigy. Pinatas of Nobel Peace Prize winners, Ghandi and Mother Theresa should be beaten to bits. I know that doesn’t have anything to do with football or reality, but neither does the stereotype that our majority of ‘good’ fans get.
We aren’t the press darlings – and as this has been going on for the 30+ years that I have been paying attention, we probably never will be – so at least we should have some fun with it and build our bad reputation into legend. If we can’t make them love us, let’s make them fear us.

Personally I like the reputation
At least as far as it being a bit of an intimidation factor. If the visiting team is at all bothered by the booing then I say give ‘em more. Booing the home team is fine if the fans see lack of effort…they’re pretty good at spotting lack of effort. If you have the cajones to wear the other team’s jersey in our stadium and/or parking lot then you should be prepared to be heckled unmercifully. There are idiot fans in every city who take it too far. Most of what I’ve seen is good natured and everyone, including the hecklee, is laughing. Yes, the Irvin thing was dispicable. Why should we care about what the media thinks of our fans? As IggleGreen says, I’d rather them fear us then love us. BTW, I was at the Santa Claus game. He deserved the boos. He sucked.

This is isn't about booing. This is about the "fans" that are despicable human beings.
Cursing out opposing fans’ loved ones for no reason. Mocking an opposing fans’ physical disabilities. Threatening other fans with physical harm or actually harming them. Heckling a football team is one thing. Ribbing with opposing fans is fine. But crossing physical and personal boundaries is completely unnecessary and shouldn’t have a place in Philly.

Did anyone read the Silver Lining Playbook? There is a part in the book where he goes to the Linc for the Eagles/Giants game and gets in a fight (mind you, the kid just got out of an institution). This just reminds me of the book… if you guys didn’t read it you should try and check it out.

i don't pay attention to any of this stuff
who cares how the media sees us eagles fans? does it get annoying when you can’t make it through any home game without the mention of the “fans who pelted santa”? of course it does. but i don’t really care how any one views us.
I know that I, personally, have never thrown anything or assulted anyone because they don’t root for the eagles, and i don’t intend to do so. If the media is going to label our fan base they can. it just shows us philadelphia fans their lack of knowledge.

the worst...
i am a loyal philly fan… longer than most of you but that’s just a function of age… i’ve been to games in practically every city in the country… i now live in Orange County, CA and go to as many games as I can when Philly teams play out here (LA, Anaheim, San Diego)… I was hoping to see the angels beat the yanks so i could go to a philly/angels world series game… the point is the absolute worst… most obnoxious collection of fans in the entire country… are equally divided between NYC and Philly and its not something to be proud of… it speaks to fact that underneath all the bravado, a great many people who call themselves fans of their teams from NYC and Philly are just a bunch of self hating drunks and losers… they aren’t sports fans… they are just a**holes… too bad beacuse they give the majority of people who love their the teams a bad rep…

I know this topic is a sore spot for all decent Eagles Fans but......
I figure most people, when they think of Philly Fans, think of these people

Sorry, just trying to lighten things up a bit. I still think Philly is one of the best cities in the world. And that the Eagles have not only one of the most passionate fan bases, but also one of the most football intelligent fan bases in the NFL. The writers, and television hosts for the most part have no idea what goes on inside the Linc on gameday, and they probably don’t care to find out. As it’s been said time and time again, its easier for those people to continue to reinforce our stereotype that to try to change it. So i figure we’re stuck with it for now for better or worse.

As a Cowboys fan
I’ll never forget Eagle fans standing up and applauding after Michael Irvin fell on the Vet carpet and didn’t move.
Or the snowball game w/batteries in the snowballs.
It’s hard to forget or forgive things like that. Especially Irvin.
by Perry the Platypus on Nov 4, 2009 3:14 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
"never forget"
that’s the key line. and the problem. people need to let go of that stuff. i think everyone is sick of hearing about it when nothing to that extent has happened in some time.

womp womp womp. I’m tired of hearing the same damn examples. Even those examples are not the majority of Eagles fans… and that is the freaking point.

Overblown examples
Actually I’ve never heard the batteries in snowballs thing, so that could be made up for all I know.
the Irvin thing has always overblown. When he was wheeled off the field fans cheered when signaled with a thumbs up. That would seem to prove that the fans there did take it seriously, but I guess everyone wants to ignore that.
by JasonB on Nov 4, 2009 10:41 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Batteries in snowballs wasnt even in philly.
It was the Denver game vs. the Raiders. There were batteries thrown at a Phillies game, but the same is true a Giants game in NY as well. Everything bad that ever happens in a sports game somehow turns into “Philly did it”.

What irks me...
Is that bad fan behavior happens other places, but philly (primarily Eagles) fans are the ones that have the reputation.
The media constantly reminds us about snowballs at Jimmy Johnson, nevermind that the same thing happened at Giants stadium. Nevermind bottles thrown onto the field in New Orleans and Cleveland.
We always hear, Donovan McNabb, booed on draft day. How many f-ing draft picks have Jets fans booed?
There’s bad fan behavior in Philly, yes. But, there’s bad fan behavior everywhere.
I wonder if I can bill Jeff Lurie and Peter Angelos for the years of therapy their teams are going to put me through.

Why?
Why is it hard to forgive things like that? Were you there? I wasn’t. Why does an entire cities’ fanbase have to pay for eternity for the transgressions of a few?
It doesn’t seem logical to me. At some point we need to move on.
And most of these stories have more to them that what’s reported anyway, so the crap is always blown out of proportion. An entire stadium wanted Irvin dead? I don’t think so. As they said above, it does become self-perpetuating at a point, but honestly, every fanbase has losers so why just single out ours as the worst? It’s lazy at best and polyanna at worst.

i'm getting older
nothing seems that long ago to me. Once again, I merely pointed out a few examples.
Actually I have a question for you die hards. Nothing has really happened since you moved to the Linc.? I don’t remember anything. Just curious.

nothing
absolutely nothing memorable happened at the linc so far. nothing has really happened in over a decade. i know this sounds really normal, but there is no court in the linc like there was in the vet.

and he got recovered. so i still count that as one of the all-time great philly moments.

How much do you remember?
Do you remember Deon dancing around near the spot where Irvin was being treated? He was acting like an over-animated healer/preacher, because he’s all about the prime time. I’m sure that Deon was truly worried about his teammate and friend, and that maybe his dance routine was an impromptu reaction because he was nervous and fearful.
But given the history between them (Irvin and Deon) and Philly fans, how they would always taunt the Eagles crowd, the Eagles fans were booing Deon for the show he was putting on.

A special place......
I remember that Brian Dawkins in an interview once said how much he loved the city of Philadelphia and the fans…..and in the same breathe he said…..‘not everyone can play in Philly’. Philly fans are a special bred. Philly has always lived in the shadow of NY….the BIG Apple….Times Square, Empire State Buidling, etc. NY, like Chicago, has a song named after it. Even when they mention the large metropolitan cities in the country…Philly is usually mentioned as an after thought. LA is well known, Chicago is well known, NY is well known, Miami is well known, Detroit is well known, San Francisco has a song and is well known, Dallas was known as Americas team…..Green Bay, a small town, is well known. But mention Philly and people say…..‘oh, you guys booed Santa Claus….lol. Having been born and raised in Philly and lived in various other places around the country, when someone mentioned the Santa Claus incident I say proudly…..’yeah, we booed Santa Claus and we might boo you too’….lol.
Most players who have played for the Eagles over the years have nothing but good memories of playing there. They loved the fans and they loved the city. When Dawk said that not everyone can play for the Eagles, it meant that in order to play there you have to understand the fans and the city. What most people don’t understand about Philly is that the people there appreciate hard work and dedication. Philly fans support their team like no other city and we feel we can also be critical of our teams. When they play well they receive all the love that the City of Brotherly Love has to offer…..but when they play bad…..well, they are treated like a child who was disobedient. They are punished and disciplined and sent to their room….lol……but we still love them. To give a recent example of the love the city has shown…..take Jeff Garcia. He was a pro bowl quarterback for the SF 49ers for several years….bounced around the league….started several times…..came to Philly and replaced Donovan and took us to the playoffs. He was here one year….and recently, when he returned for a short time, said that Philly was the best time of his entire career. Why? He felt the love, he understood the city and the team and the organization. Just listen to the enthusiasm of the players who came to the Eagles from other teams….listen to what they say about the love they felt when they got here….from the fans and the organization. Listen. Yes…….the fans can be hard, they can be demanding…….and there’s a few bad apples among the majority. But you will never ever find a city with more dedicated fans….through the good times and the bad times. And we sell out every game. So to all you haters………if you can’t take the heat, get out of the pot.

Tonight at the bar
I was watching the phightin’ phils try to repeat, but unfortunately they were unsuccessful. Me and a couple of my buddies happened to sit next to two guys from Indianapolis. The two guys did not particularly love one team or hate the other (Phillies or Yankees). But they did say one thing. They said that after living in the area for a few years they can respect Philadelphia teams and their fans because they have heart. They realize that fans from this city in particular eat/breathe/live by our sports teams. Thats what I love about Philadelphia and our fans. Yes, sometimes a few of us can get too rambunctious and do some despicable actions towards other people. As much as I do not support most of these actions, they do happen and are a part of our fan base. I don’t want to even imagine a previous post about some of the things Eagles fans said to a handicapped person. But these people are a part of the fan base. The general underlying thing about every single person that supports a Philadelphia sports team (for the most part) is that they have heart. Thats what separates us from everybody else, thats what I absolutely love and live for. Rain or shine, win or lose, we are going to support our teams and our city.

Sorry for a long post, I hope you'll read it anyway
Well as I mentioned a couple of times before in some other posts, I live in Denmark and became an Eagles fan about 4 years ago. I love Eagles, I basically live and die with every game. Ive never seen some of the old Eagles games, but Ive read about them, Ive seen a documentary about Eagles(the history and great personalities of the team) and if it happens that when you guys recall some of the old time players and I dont know who they are, I look them up on Internet and read about them to expand my knowledge about the team and I have quite a few mates here in Denmark just like that. So Eagles fan base have some good fans overseas too, just wanted to let you know that.
I heard and read a lot of times about mean, cruel, intollerant, crazy Eagles fans. Ive heard about Santa and Irvin episodes and snowball game. But correct me if Im wrong Irvin episode was back in 1999, the snowball game was in 1989 and Santa Claus episode was in 1968, which is 10, 20 and 41 years ago respectively. Now based on that I have a message to the entire NFL nation: GET OVER IT PEOPLE! 41 years ago and you still bring that story back, Im sure that half of the people whom were at that game are already dead!
Times are changed, Im sure there are some crazy folks out there, who call themselves Eagles fans and behave themselves in stupid way, but you find them everywhere, some cities have more of them some less. Im sure that statisticly they are not more then 10-20% of the entire Eagles fan base.
I’ve always seen Eagles fans as passionate fans, fans who live and die with their sports teams, not just Eagles. Philadelphia seems to be a city with a lot of sports history and there are families that have been fans of the same teams in few generations now, which explains also why you guys from Philly are even more passionate then the average fans.
It is important though to mention that Ive never been in Philadelphia and havent yet experienced a game at the Linc, but Ive met a native Philadelphian here in Denmark, he is an exchange student( great guy by the way), he told me alot about Philly and the fans and it seems like my impression about Philly is quite right. He told me that you can seat in the bar and people will talk about Eagles, Phillies, 76ers or Flyers. They could start to sing Eagles song without any reason and I almost got tears in my eyes, because it sounded like (sports)paradise in my ears. You see, football isnt big at all in Denmark and I have some friends here, we watch games together and talk about football, but when I go out and get a couple of beers and randomly start to sing Eagles song… Well people look at me like crazy, I guess you can imagine that.
So no matter what other people, analysts, journalists etc. say about you/us forget it, dont let you get affected by it and hold on what you have there guys, because it is simply beautiful. Im looking forward to come to Philly one day and experience it myself.

I don't see why so many of you cry
About our reputation.
Yes everyone has pieces of shit fans, but Philly has the MOST out of any other city.
How about the Flyers in the playoffs the other year? They were spitting on opposing team’s fans, not letting the guys toing to the bathroom, calling the girls fat whales, etc… I was so appalled.
For fucks sakes, we had a JAIL in our stadium!!! A fucking JAIL!! You don’t get a jail because of reputation. You get one because of the over abundance of douche rags.
I get it that it’s a minority and that most of us are good people. But we have the most douche bags and I’m not so sure why you guys can’t accept that. I
