Celek to sign 6yr/$30mil extension

I stumbled upon some insider information, a friend is close with the Celek family.

Brent Celek will be signing a six-year, $30 million contract extension with the Eagles.  Signing bonus is possibly $8 million.  Unsure on the exact timing of the deal.

Good to see that the Eagles will lock up a good young player.

Star-divide

Celek has 54 receptions for 601 yard and 5 touchdowns through 11 games this season.  In 16 games (7 starts) in 2008, he caught 27 passes for 318 yards and 1 touchdown.

Good pay the man

he’s improved his blocking and is a machine… Defiantly put him up there with the best this year.

Good to see the Eagles slowly but surely cutting down on the number of FAs for next year.

hmmmmmm

Wonder if he’ll be complaining about this before it’s all said and done. in another 4 years, he might be considered the best TE in the NFL, if he continues to progress. $5MM per year including the bonus, which means actually $3.6MM per year for 6 years. Good, but not elite.

he will

they always do when they sign these early deals. Maybe he was waiting for better money later then he hurt his thumb, along with his team mates going down with concussions, and realized how short a NFL career can be and decided to sign.

Let's get it Birds.

It's always risk/reward, for both sides.

$5 million a year compares closely with the current contracts of top TEs Dallas Clark and Antonio Gates. I think he made a good choice by signing. Yeah, he will probably be worth more than $5 million in 2014, but his butt is covered if everything doesn’t go as planned.

good points

but his thumb injury isn’t serious. They’ve already made it clear it’s something he can play with while still being productive

Gates also signed his deal in 2005 his 3rd year in the league and yes he had performed better than Celek at that point contract numbers have gone up considerably since then this seems reasonable.

funny this comes after his worst day as an eagle

but i could care less, everyone has bad days, plus he was injured. we all know how good celek is, and 6 yr 30 mil seems pretty nice considering what he may become in 1-2 years

I haven't seen it anywhere else.

And like I said, I’m not sure when it will be announced. Make of it what you will.

by rcpratt on Nov 30, 2009 6:02 PM EST up reply actions

yeah I’m not being a dick I was just wondering if it’s been confirmed.

It makes sense he’s been playing well, he’s in his 3rd year of a 4 year deal this is traditionally when the Eagles start extending young guys they believe to have proved themselves … All the pieces are there I was just wondering if we have a confirmation.

$5 mil a year isn't overpayment for a quality te...

remember, we franchised l.j. smith last year. $4 mil+ flushed right down the tiolet. having said that, i don’t think this is true.

really?

isn’t he a restricted free agent next year (pending the CBA being restructured)? I’d like to see him in midnight green. Just sayin…

by birds'n'raiders on Nov 30, 2009 10:45 PM EST up reply actions

Nah

I’m pretty sure he’s not a free agent till 2011. But like you said that is pending the CBA being restructured.

um...I'm all for Celek, he's probably one of my two favorite players on the offense.

But my other guy for the past 2 yrs has been Avant and he’ll be a FA this offseason not the next one so I would figure there would be more urgency on him. But I’m extremely happy none-the-less.

Go Birds and Go Brent.

i too am a huge avant and celek fan. If we don’t lock up both of these players, we’ll regret it. I think it’s pretty fair to say avant is the most underrated player on the offense, but he always comes through in the clutch… and i’d much ratch have a guy like that, than a guy that’s very inconsistent

he’s #3 among TEs in receptions and yards, #5 in yards after catch, 4th in TDs, and fifth in broken tackles. His blocking may be sub-par but he is in no way average.

by eagleyosh on Dec 1, 2009 12:45 AM EST up reply actions

he could get 10 touchdowns and 1000 yards..

JIBTA would still call him average and question his blocking ability.

Looks like I did the right thing buying that black Celek jersey in the Linc lot Sunday :)

Seriously, though. This is great news. He’s one of the best young TEs in the game. He blocks well and steps up when the pressure is on — the Foreskins game nonwithstanding.
