Ask The Falcoholic!

Can I interest you in a healthy fear of the Falcons?

After watching us nearly lose to the 1-1,000 Bucs this weekend, that's probably a no. But I think crippling fear is about the only advantage the Falcons will have coming into this game, so I figured I'd ask.

But I'm not hear to recount how woeful we are despite our 6-5 record. I'm here to answer any questions you may have about the upcoming matchup. Want to know if Matt Ryan or Michael Turner will play? Gotta know if our pass rush can make a dent in your offensive line? Wondering who the hell Eric "Special" Weems is? I got your answers right here.

If you could recommend this post so it stays near the top for those asking questions, that would be great. Here's to a good game this weekend!

What are the chances Turner and Ryan are playing? I think Ryan should be out next week.

Do you think the Falcons could win against good teams without those two? Thanks.

Good question

Turner could well miss next week after hurting the same ankle he injured the week before, all because our coaching staff threw him into the game too early. I was pretty angry about that, and it could cost us dearly.

Ryan I think will be back. It’s a toe injury, and those I believe are manageable with proper care. Because he can get rid of the ball quickly and you guys are known for your blitzing, I think we’ll want him back.

And without either of them, it would be an amazing upset if we beat you guys.

He did that to a lot of people

Another convincing argument for not starting him, right?

Ryan I think will be back. It’s a toe injury

I wouldn’t be so sure depends on what foot if it’s his push foot you could see passes sailing and INTs happening. Toe injuries can be severely painful, personally I want to see him play but I wouldn’t cry if he sat.

The latest word is that he's day-to-day

Sounds like a toe sprain, whatever that is.

After all the buzz is it even a story anymore?

That Vick is coming back to ATL? After all the heat in the offseason, Vick coming to the Eagles has turned into a non-story. We know there will be some media buzz, but do you think the story is basically dead in ATL as well?

by Smallbugger on Nov 30, 2009 11:49 AM EST reply actions

The story should have been dead a long time ago

Anyone with sense knew that McNabb was not going to lose his job to Vick, not after he spent time in prison and would clearly have an enormous amount of rust to shake off. And given that Chris Redman and Matt Ryan both played better than Vick was, I expected the Falcons to forget about him.

It still comes up in the ATL and the national media is going to run this one into the ground a bit this week, but it’s old news now. He’s third string for you guys and a fading memory for us.

Was Matt Ryan over hyped coming into the season? I’m asking this as his QB rating is 80.0, 20th in the league and lower than people like Matt Hasselbeck, Jason Campbell, and Alex Smith ratings.

How has Sam Baker been playing? I haven’t heard a word about him since he was draft, and certainly no one was talking him up like Cris Collingsworth on Michael Oher last night. (Man, he’s a horrible announcer…)

RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

by Imp on Nov 30, 2009 12:02 PM EST reply actions

I'll tackle those one at a time

1) Ryan was overhyped, as was Joe Flacco. The hype machine had grown to the point where he would have had to throw 50 touchdowns just to meet them. He started strong and has gotten shaky in recent weeks, so in the short-term I’m very concerned. Long-term, I still believe he’s going to be a great quarterback in this league.

2) Baker’s been very good when he has played and injury-prone to an astonishing degree. He’s great at protecting Ryan’s blind side but has now missed significant chunks of his first two seasons. It’s a concern.

Given our defense

how do you anticipate your offense attacking us? The best success so far this year was enjoyed by NO, which spread the field to the extent that we couldn’t blitz. Not every team can do that, and other have had various sucess through either trying power running and short passes (WASH), or gambling for a few big plays, some of which worked out (DALLAS). How do you see Hotlanta going about it?

Well, I fear Michael Turner will be out

So it’s going to be passing heavy. Fortunately, with Roddy White, Tony Gonzalez, Michale Jenkins and Jerious Norwood, we have the weapons necessary to open the field up and take some pressure off Matt Ryan, with a few power runs mixed in from backup Jason Snelling. Our problem all season has been execution, though, and I worry more about that than anything else.

Ugh Gonzalez should have a monster game we can’t cover TEs to save our life. Norwood is a good matchup against our Defense too. Although our chances jump considerably with Redman under center and not Ryan.

Do you believe the Falcons are better than their record?

A lot of teams look good on paper and have high expectations but fall short because of execution. Do you believe the talent is there to merit a stronger record? Or are you still waiting for young players like Ryan to develop?

by Team Serbia on Nov 30, 2009 1:26 PM EST reply actions

I think we're right where we should be

I would’ve said we should’ve won the Giants game and lost the Bucs game based on how we played, so we’d still be here. Because of injuries, developmental challenges and a couple of key players (John Abraham) that haven’t stepped up this year, we’re little better than slight above average right now.

Chris Redman

was Chris Redman’s success on Sunday due to a solid QB performance, or was it just a product of a terrible Tampa Bay Defense?

by Tron79 on Nov 30, 2009 4:28 PM EST reply actions

He was solid

Tampa’s defense isn’t great and he’ll struggle a lot more against the pressure the Eagles are capable of bringing, but he’s a very good backup quarterback who throws a pretty spiral. I don’t expect this to be a fluke.

Sorry but I have to disagree there...

Redman benefited from a crappy bucs team.. Everyone has great days against the buc’s…

He has ability but I think he more benefitted from the bad defense of the bucs.

Look at 2007, though

Seven games and a passer rating of 90.4 with one of the most woeful Falcons teams I can recall. He’s not terrible.

No way, he played in 7 games with only 4 starts... those

numbers are way bloated…

Sorry but but 4 starts and light duty in 7 games isnt enough to support your arguement…

Yes, but he also hasn't had any truly terrible games...

….to support your argument.

I’m not saying he’s not going to have a tougher time with your defense, because he is. There’s a good chance you’ll actually kill the man and pile up five or six sacks. I’m just saying I don’t think he’s going to go to pieces this weekend.

No no no no

dont get me wrong, I dont think he’s going to be in pieces this weekend, I dont think he’s terrible, I just think that some of your comments about him were a bit outlandish… He’s only started a hand full of games but he’s still a b/u QB in the nfl, I have no doubt he has the ability to win a few games, I just think your overhyping him just a tad…

But I do the same thing about some of the players on my team..

Atlanta Run Defense

Last year when we played you, Brian Westbrook had his best game of the season. I know you guys lost Peria Jerry; how has the run defense been this year? I have heard about Atlanta’s secondary problems, but frankly, with Desean Jackson possibly out, I have my reservations about how successful Philadelphia can be through the air.

by tanman5 on Nov 30, 2009 7:00 PM EST reply actions

Our run defense is a little stouter this year

Due to the addition of former first round defensive end Jamaal Anderson to the interior of the line. The dude just excels against the run, and I think you won’t rip us a new one like last year.

They got burned by the NYG receiving core didn’t they?

They're young and lack elite talent

We’ll have a rookie filling the turnstile that has been our second cornerback slot, while Chris Houston will attempt to lock down whoever’s covering him. I don’t expect that to go particularly well.

The real problem, in my mind, is the complete lack of a pass rush. Our leading guy, Jon Babineaux, is a defensive tackle and has five sacks. We’ve done nothing this year.

My dad's a Falcons fan so I actually watch them somewhat often

and I have 2 questions:

Jerious Norwood seems like a complete beast. I realize he’s been banged up, but it seems like even when he’s playing he’s underused. Do Falcons fans feel the same way? Why do you think he doesn’t get more touches?

How helpful has the addition of Mike Peterson been? Better/worse than expected? The run D seems to be struggling a bit, though that’s not necessarily because of him.

Yea, i’m really curious as to how/why Norwood isn’t used more in the falcons’ offense. I’ve seen tapes of the guy run in college and pro, and he’s quick and shifty.

by notfromphilly on Nov 30, 2009 7:50 PM EST up reply actions

Well...

I’ve been beating the Norwood drum for years, but there’s a clear correlation here. The more he plays, the more he gets injured. He’s definitely talented and he’s a terrific change of pace, but he’s not a featured back. Still wish he could get more touches, especially because he can make the opposing team pay once he gets loose.

Peterson started out the year strong and has been rather average since. He’s a fine addition, but he’s actually been worse against the pass than the rush.

Assuming Desean doesn't play...

Are the Falcons more vulnerable to the pass or the run? Would you say your secondary is more of a speed type unit or a physical type unit? Who do the Falcons have on D that can really show up and disrupt the Eagles gameplan on offense?

by IgglesFanDeployd on Dec 1, 2009 7:16 AM EST reply actions

The pass will be most effective against us

Because we can’t seem to rush the quarterback effectively of late and our secondary is shaky. We have a decent but not dominant run defense, so you’re better airing it out.

On defense, you’ll want to look out for a few guys. DT Jon Babineaux is a disruptive force on the inside who can and probably will get to McNabb more than once. FS Thomas DeCoud has a few picks this season and is due for another. LB Curtis Lofton leads the league in tackles and is in on virtually every play.

Eagles can easily get beat even if Ryan and Turner are out

Couple of points:

- Redman strikes as the type of backup who can take advantage of the Eagles’ defense right now – a veteran who has been around for a while but isn’t completely washed up either that throws a pretty accurate ball on the short-intermediate routes

- A couple of weapons in their passing game (White, Gonzalez) that will give this banged-up secondary problems.

- Underrated RB in Norwood who has been plagued by injuries this year but looks like he still a quality RB when healthy.

- Team that is just ridiculously hard to beat at home. 12-1 at home the last 2 years including 5-0. If this game was at the Linc, I wouldn’t be worried about the Eagles winning it. Going to be tough for them to win in the Georgia Dome where whatever reason the Falcons have just been a superior team the past 2 years.

by MG77 on Dec 1, 2009 2:33 PM EST reply actions

That and this is basically a must win game for the Falcons. Combine that with losing 2 stars, and I’d imagine they’re going to be playing hard.

by zfg on Dec 2, 2009 11:57 AM EST up reply actions

Ugh... Saw you signed Matt Bryant.

The Eagles and Matt Bryant have a history. When he was with the Bucs, he beat us with a 62 yard FG with no time left. I was unaware Jason Elam was having such a bad season – What happened there?

Also, if you were the Eagles O Coordinator, how would you attack the Atlanta defense? And if you were our D Coordinator, how would you try to stop the Atlanta offense?
