eagles possession offense and ryan moats (?!)
I've never been one to be overly concerned about the mix of pass plays and running plays in the Eagles' offense, but the current reliance on the big play worries me a lot. Did anyone notice that the Eagles have had fewer first downs and less time of possession than their opponent in each of their last four games? These 4 games included games against 3 of the worst teams in the league! It seems like big plays are the only thing keeping this team going (along with a good plus/minus on interceptions, obviously). I know that there is more risk than reward in running Westbrook too much at this point in the season, but I'm very concerned about the Eagles's possession offense especially in terms of the opportunity it gives opposing teams. You notice that the only decent offense that the birds have played against this season (the Saints) laid a real whupping on them. What's to be done?
On a somewhat related subject, what do people make of Moats's 126 yard, 3 touchdown performance at Buffalo last weekend? I saw that he did it on 23 carries, none longer than 17 yards. Just from reading the stat sheet, it seems like a real workman-like performance. Who would have thunk it?

Moats ran against a team ranked 32nd in run defense

if we get the big play, we get it
that doesnt mean that our offense can’t sustain drives

that's my point, though
It doesn’t really matter to me whether the Eagles pass a lot or run a lot, but the offense needs to be able to drive the ball down the field. Contrary to your comment, having fewer first downs and less time of possession than the Bucs and the Raiders and the Redskins and the Giants in consecutive weeks does indeed mean that the offense can’t sustain drives. Furthermore, ot being able to drive the ball down the field means (1) that the good offenses in the league will have too many opportunities to score and (2) that it is too difficult to successfully run a two minute offense. That’s what I’m afraid of at least.

Moats was a scat back who couldn’t pass protect.
I never thought he would be a bad RB, just not what we were looking for.
I hope he tears it up in Houston while Slaton is out.

moats.....
yeah i always liked moats and made a comment a few months back as 2 why the eagles ever got rid of him. And that was the response , that he had a hard time learnin the playbook. Hes definitely a capable back-up and a potential starter on a shitty team but im obviously happy with the running back situation we have now, however as sad is itmis i think were gonna need to add another piece to the puzzle to go with Shady cause westy is on his way out.

We’ve always had to live and die by the big play this year is no different.

but it is different
My point is that this year seems considerably different.
In recent years, the Eagles have consistently had a very good scoring offense. They ranked 2nd in the NFL in points per game in 2006, 6th in 2007, and 9th in 2008. This year is no different. To date, they are ranked 3rd.
Until now, however, they have also been a good first down offense. They ranked tied for 9th in the NFL in first downs in 2006, tied for 5th in 2007, and 8th in 2008. This year, they rank tied for 23rd. And they’ve played some horrible teams.
I couldn’t find time of possession statistics, but I bet that that would also show a significant decrease this year as well.
Maybe the number of games played this season is too small to draw conclusions. Maybe they will get more first downs in the second half of the season. First downs is certainly an imperfect statistic.
Still, I’m noticing a big change this year, and reason to be concerned about the effect of this change on being able to slow down the better offenses in the league and on being able to close out or win games in the fourth quarter.
