Eagles Off-Season Anaylsis

The beginnign of this season took forever and it seems like it was week 3 last week. That being said I remember all the talk was our off season moves were going to help us get to our first Superbowl title. Well with the season halfway over we can begin asses the sucess of the off season.

FB Leonard Weaver

54295_giants_eagles_football_medium

The signing of the talented Fullback gave many fans the sweet sweet dream of a slightly more balanced offense. An Eagles team free of the infamous "3rd/4th and short." Well...The FB has been explosive when majorly incorporated. But Andy barley gets him in. I think we should to the Westbrook screens and underneath stuff to him instead of McCoy and have Weaver run in goal line more. With what he has shown us , it can be easliy seen that he needs a new contract.

Grade: B/B+

Star-divide

G Stacy Andrews

Stacy_medium

"The Andrews Wall." More like "Winston Justice and who ever is healthy this week." This guy was supposed to solidify our O-Line and help be a major piece in becoming one of the best O-Lines in th NFL. Sadly we had only the best O-Line on paper. I think there is time to turn his fortunes around for himself (cant say for his sister number 73). But he needs to start wearing pads.

Grade: D

T Jason Peters

Jason-peters-6178_medium

One of the bright spots on our new line, LT Jason Peters has been extraordinary and well worth the 1st round pick. He is one of our best linemen if not the best. Hard to find a guy of his calibur.

Grade: A

Micahel Vick
Michael_vick_eagle_medium

He has been more of an experiment. Last week I finally saw some production from him.  I think we should use him regularly in 3rd and short. Like some more passes or seeing him as a receiver. Heck, maybe a running back in shot gun formation. There is a lot of optimism with him.

Grade: C/C+

Eldra Buckley

Not much to say. Hopefully can see some more of him w/ Westbrook out.

Grade: D

Jason Babin

Large_babin_medium

Basicly the longshot during training camp b/c of the abundance of DE's. But this guy executed and is now in the starting roation at LE. He alrteady has 10 tackles and 2.5 sacks.

Grade: B-

Overall, Andy did his research and it has paid off.

Hard to give

Buckley a “D”…you can’t expect a 3rd string running back to make an impact…at least you don’t want to have to rely on him, because that means your running game is in trouble. I’d have to give Buckley an INComplete.

The rest I agree with. I think extending Weaver will be a priority this offseason. I’d like to see Babin get a new deal. The Vick experiment fails unless we get him to pass the ball. The “Wildcat” is a running play, and for the most part, teams know to just stack the box when Vick gets in the game with few exceptions. If we can show that Vick truly is a dual threat, it would back up the defense, and raise his trade value.

I’d also like to give Sean Jones a B-. It took him longer than I wanted to figure out our defense, but he’s a solid player, and I’d like to see him on the roster next year.

Ellis Hobbes earns a “C-”. It would have been a “C” if he hadn’t gotten hurt. He had some nice returns for us, but he wasn’t great as a corner, and I still hate him for that fumble to open the 2nd half against NO.

"What did it feel like? That collision, I didn't feel nothing, because he was pretty much defenseless. It was like running through a cardboard box. Seriously. Cardboard box."- Sheldon Brown on his pounding of Reggie Bush in the '06 Playoffs

Buckley deserves

a “D” because he has failed to get on the field. If he was raising eyebrows during practice and pushing Shady for touches, then he would be on the field. I feel like he was a no-name player who had a great training camp and made the team. And in his mind, that was good enough for him. Remember the 3-headed monster of Staley-Westy-Bucky? We can have that again! Buckley doesn’t have the marbles…

Peters deserves an A+ imo. Not only has he been the anchor we needed on our line, but he’s been better than Tra Thomas was for us and he’s helped mentor young Winston Justice who is having a quick, but great year as well.

-Stacy Andrews deserves an F. Huge contract, huge promises and he can’t even get on the damn field. It’s his fault and it’s the FO’s fault for not doing a better job finding out about his injury situation.

-Vick… He gets an incomplete. We only bring him into the game in short yardage situations and our unimaginative use of him is the reason he has not done squat. If he was used properly, I think he would give us another dimension. But we don’t, so he doesn’t…

-You assessment on Hobbs is fair. A lot of guys I’ve talked to really don’t like him, but I think he’s a decent corner and a pretty good returner.

-Sean Jones gets a C. He was beat out in training camp by a younger, fresher, faster Macho Harris (who, imo is going to be a big time player). The FS position is Macho’s, but he is a rookie right now, so Jones can keep the seat warm for him.

-Weaver gets a B+ from me. It seems like we are just beginning to use him to his potential. He’s a great character guy, his teammates love him, and he’s extremely versatile. IMO, he’s a guy that we need to lock down to a long term deal after the season.

Agreed

That is exactly what I always say about ACL injuries. It takes at least a year for one to get back to there old self.

by macjack09 on Nov 29, 2009 4:41 PM EST up reply actions

Why?

Why do you pay a guy nearly 6 million dollars this year if you know he’s not going to be effective? Either, the Eagles expected him to be or they knew better and made a poor signing. I give the Andrew’s signing (especially given the cost) an F+.

by Soren K on Nov 29, 2009 5:48 PM EST up reply actions

you pay him that much because if you didn’t someone else would have. they got him to a long term deal which is ultimately what they wanted

by 0sirys on Nov 29, 2009 5:57 PM EST up reply actions

yeah, its just what it took

to get him locked in… He’s a damn good player when healthy…

and I know the ACL shit from expirience sadly.

Just like I know

Shawn Andrews condition by experience. Well not exactly the same muscles most likely, but the same injury.

by macjack09 on Nov 29, 2009 6:16 PM EST up reply actions

yeah, i havent run into any back problems(knock on wood)

I came back strong towards the end of my senior year… My coaches wouldnt play me because I wasnt exactly ready to go.. But towards the end of the season I started tearing it up…

Heres the timeline pretty much…
1st you get hurt and say “holy fucking shit my knee hurts”
2nd you scream “my fucking knee couldnt bend that way before the injury” to the athletic trainers as they bend your leg in weird directions
3rd reality hits that your done for the season
4th you start to feel better, you start walking( I even started running the day before my doctor read the MRI)
5th you get sad becasue the reality sets in agian
6th you have surgery and rehab for hours and hours
7th you come back but are tenitive(no matter how much you say you aren’t)
8th you finally get that “testing hit” on your knee and realize you can stand up to the beating again
9th you start playing better… but a year later.

Im so confident in my knee im going to walk on in college… I cannot wait.

agreed on that past two posts

THey knew this and we’re not even paying Stacy anything. and you can’t give a third down back a D… What can you expect from a third down back with VERY limited opportunities?

This off sedason was great considering how bad the Giants did in their off season

Chump Change?

5,820,000 cap figure

1,620,000 base salary (w/ 4,200,000 bonus)

I think not.

by Soren K on Nov 29, 2009 4:13 PM EST up reply actions

No

Unless we match or better, surpass last season, this is not a successful off-season. I’m surprised so many voted yes above. How can you go backward and call the off-season a success? And don’t tell me injuries. Look at the additions and tell me how successful they have been? What…our collective grade is about a C+?

by Soren K on Nov 29, 2009 4:18 PM EST up reply actions

false. this seasons success\failure(which we are better than we were at this point last season) is not wholey based on what the team did in the offseason. you can have a good offseason and have alot of other things affect how well you play. you know like almost every member of your line getting hurt at times, your star running back going down, losing your starting and backup middle linebackers. this team could be alot worse off than it is now and its because of the savvy offseason moves and drafting that they are not completely f—-ed

by 0sirys on Nov 29, 2009 5:55 PM EST up reply actions

Largely

6 mil spent on a O-Lineman with zero production. I don’t see how you can justify paying a guy for a long-term contract when you expect to get zero the first year. That makes little sense in the business where now is everything. This is money which could better be spent elsewhere.

And to take a risk on a position where you need depth (TE), and now have gotten burned (as the guy may never play for you), is a big zero as well. If Celek goes down, we’re hurt badly.

by Soren K on Nov 29, 2009 10:11 PM EST up reply actions

i fail to see the correlation between andrews and the tight end position. assuming they felt the need to make a play for a TE they could have, they had the cap space and then some. they were banking on ingram who unfortunately also got injured in the preseason. The fact that they gave Stacy Andrews a long term deal shows that it wasn’t a move for right now. In fact Reid came out and acknowledged the injury in the Press Conference for the signing. So regardless of whether you like it or not they knew what was going on and are getting what they see as a possibility. The Eagles under Reid traditionally don’t blow their load for 1 season they make sure they have have enough in the chamber so that if they don’t get it this season they are in contention the next season.

by 0sirys on Nov 29, 2009 10:29 PM EST up reply actions

TE and OL

Both were moves made in the off-season via draft and FA. I’m responding to the theme of the thread…i.e. how do we rate the off season. I hope that I can disagree with myself several years from now after Andrews has several years of solid play. I’m just not big on paying big money up front (on a veteran) and counting on payoff down the road.

too early

It’s too early to tell where we will be in the end.

You forgot about Sean Jones.

What grade would you give him.

If Life Gives You Lemons, Just Say FUCK IT and Bail.

by igottachubby on Nov 29, 2009 12:31 PM EST reply actions

I would give him a C

right now b/c he’s only started the past 2-3 games and really hasnt done anything special… Plus Macho started over him for a while.

thats Cobb on Kolb crime if you ask me... as said by yophillybro

by wild_eagle on Nov 29, 2009 12:37 PM EST up reply actions

Well he did have that game saving INT

But I agree with a C since he just now got the starting job

by macjack09 on Nov 29, 2009 4:42 PM EST up reply actions

I took that into effect...

you cannot give every player that wins you a game a good grade… see lito sheppard.

I'd give Buckley at least a C or B-

He might not be much on offense since he is the 3rd string RB (even though he had a tough TD today) but he has been great on special teams especially KO.

I’m not ready to give up on Stacy yet because I am a firm believer no one comes back in less than a year from an ACL injury (excepts non-mobile QBs) and is exactly how he left. He tore his ACL in January so I’ll wait till around next year to give him a pat or give him the middle finger.

by macjack09 on Nov 29, 2009 4:39 PM EST reply actions

I think you have to talk about the draft picks

With Maclin, Mccoy, Harris, and Fokou all seeing such a significant amount of time, they’ve been important offseason acquistiions

by tanman5 on Nov 29, 2009 11:58 PM EST reply actions

All Good

All have done well to date…happy with that. I still will be comparing Maclin down the road to Pettigrew and see who has the bigger career.

by Soren K on Nov 30, 2009 7:00 AM EST up reply actions

i think personally i’d give weaver an A-, but I guess I’m just excited we finally have a FB.

Also the front office was aware of the risk of signing Stacy, i think they were banking on him being a good pickup in the offseason that would pay-off next season after some recovery time.

I agree, peters is an A.

Vick? Na. D. He’s really done nothing so I don’t see what warrants him a higher grade than buckley when he’s been on the field more.

Buckley is tough to grade because he is a third string guy. he wasn’t signed with the intention of starring as our lead back.

I agree, Babin gets a B- because he was a pleasant surprise.
