Has Reid lost his nerve?

Yes. Yes he has. It dawned on me yesterday as he stood there after the 3rd field goal with his arms across his chest, looking helpless; looking like he wished there was a rock around to crawl under. 21-9? 21-9? What good is that gonna do? Sure his guys showed alot of heart to fight back to at least have a shot at the game, a long shot, but Andy did them no favors at all. I dont have a copy of the illustrious 2 pt conversion chart, but common sense says that if you're down by 13, you go for two - putting yourself another TD + 2 pt conversion and a field goal short of tying it up. Sure its not likely but neither is scoring 3 touchdowns in the fourth quarter. As the monday night guys would say..."C'mon Man!!!"

Will all of the injuries and linebacking and secondary woes, our Eagles were pretty overmatched going into San Diego and the guys did a great job of fighting to stay alive, so I cant put the loss squarely on Andy's shoulders, But we are most definitely seeing a pattern of poor game management at crunch time. Andy looks to me like a gambler who has lost his nerve; he's stared the big score in the face time after time, come up short, and now he just cant muster the moxy to keep going for it. This wasnt an issue yesterday and I understand the idea of "hurry but dont rush," but I've had enough of this drag-ass late game clock control. What can be said about the short-yardage play calling the last few years? Pitiful? Cowardly? Uncreative is the kindest word I can think of.

I've had enough. I woke up today not wanting to watch another football game for the rest of the season. I was gonna cancel my Sunday ticket and stop dragging the second tv into the living room every week for 6 hours of rooting for a bunch of people I dont know; grown men playing a kids game. It's time to start getting outside and enjoying the fall, taking my dogs into the mountains and getting ready for ski season. But then, against my wishes, somebody turned the Ravens-Browns game on and I realized that I will be right back in front of the tube next sunday night, watching the Eagles stomp the Bears at soldier field, and telling my girlfriend that they are super bowl bound. What can I say? Maybe I do bleed green

. Pull it together Andy!!!

Face it

We lost for a myriad of reasons but we had half our secondary out (more at some points in the game), we have half of our LB corps out (bradley, Jordan and gaither), and a patch work offensive line…. Sure Andy isn’t perfect but what’s he supposed to do about all those injuries?

you're right we had a ton of injuries

but i hate using that as an excuse. the 3rd and 4th and shorts were where reid killed us in playcalling, and i’m a reid supporter

Big picture

I realize all of that, Joe_D, I’m not just talking about 1 game here, though.

Im with you

I have about as much interest watching the Eagles right now as I do EvilBanner and JIBTA making out. We have some issues to fix, definitely, but remember there’s 31 other teams out there all looking for a ring too.

ok so I don’t even know what EB and JIBTA look like but I definitely pictured them making out.

Defensive Failure

The failure of the game was on defense….not stopping the run. LT ran through the defense all day. Starting Cogong in the middle wasn’t the answer. And because the DBs were concentrating on pass coverage, there wasnt much help from them. Against an average runner, the outcome of the game may have been different, but against a runner like LT, you’ve got to stop him. LT had a 20 yard TD run and a 3 yeard TD run. Take away one of those TD runs and we may have won the game.

Andy is a sad clown...

With no heart, no skill and no brain. Fire him now.

by EvilBanner on Nov 16, 2009 9:24 PM EST reply actions

He definitely has heart and a brain. He has managed to put together a great team, that is typically filled with great character. His and Martys play calling are good for about 80% of the game. His only fault is late 4th quarter play calling and red zone. And although they are not the majority, that 20% definitely is the most crucial. And a good coach should be able to find a way to win, even with having half of the secondary out.

by worldphuckinchamps on Nov 17, 2009 1:56 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Yeah and for some reason… it seems that that 20% usually ends up being in the 4th quarter.

I really wanted McNabb to pull a Peyton and tell the FG unit to get off the field and go for it but that is where Peyton and McNabb differ.

It's not Andy's fault
What can be said about the short-yardage play calling the last few years? Pitiful? Cowardly? Uncreative is the kindest word I can think of.

It’s just not a coach’s fault that the team doesn’t execute. We have the biggest O-Line in football (granted they’ve been mixed and matched all over the place), and a good fullback…there is NO REASON we shouldn’t be able to pound the ball for a yard! If Andy calls for us to run for a yard, and we don’t get it, that’s not his fault. If he calls some ‘creative’ play and we don’t get it, we’d call for his head for not just pounding it.

I just can’t pin short-yardage woes on the coach. We’ve tried running, we’ve tried passing…at some point you just have to execute.

wasn't it just last week

people were complaining that McNabb was in shotgun on 3rd and short? That didn’t work, now we run, that doesn’t work…not a coach’s problem.

Ok here are what I think the problems were for the SD game.

the LB’s were mixed around way way to much… Gocong should have been at SAM, Witherspoon at WILL and then Fokou at MLB, which he did decent at during the preseason… Or even simpler start Tracy White at WILL, he’s a damn good athlete overall, and can cover fairly well, so why not play him there instead of mixing everything up and making it a cluster fuck for lack of better words.

Our Secondary is depleted at the moment but with some shifting around could make it through the next 3 weeks till hanson returns. Demps should be moved to CB which is where many scouts thought he would be best at in the NFL. Macho needs to play a Hybrid FS/CB too, or even be the nickel back.. Sean Jones needs to be on the field alot these next 3 weeks, he’s a ball hawk who can hit, he has all the intangibles.

We need to run the ball more. Obviously the Pass only shit isnt working. McNabb had 450yrds and 2TD and has nothing to show for it. We need to get Weaver, McCoy and Buckley into the mix, start the 3 headed monster.

The OL needs to be taken care of. They have been pretty good in Pass protection but in run they look like a bunch of softies… LT needs to be Peters, LG needs to be herremans, C needs to be J. Jackson, RG needs to be nick cole and RT needs to be Justice with St. Andrews mixing in at RG and RT. This could solve alot, we need to quit sub-ing RG’s in and out, its ruining the continuety of the OL. We need to run to the left, Peter’s is a monster on that side and herremans has made an immediate impact at LG since his return, what would’ve been 3yrd gains with Max in there are now 5 or 6 yard gains with Todd in there.

thats Cobb on Kolb crime if you ask me... as said by yophillybro

by wild_eagle on Nov 16, 2009 11:13 PM EST reply actions

running the ball was a real problem, especially short yardage! I can’t blame a coach for not wanting to run when it clearly wasn’t working. On the other hand, McNabb was ON…why not take advantage of it? You never know when it’ll happen, so when McNabb’s on, ride that donkey baby!

the rest of your post, I agree with. The lack of continuity in our OLine, and LBs seems to really be kicking our ass. Stacy Andrews is physically a monster! He needs to get his issues (knee, playbook) figured out REALLY quickly so he can start contributing on a regular basis. I have to believe that he can maul D Lineman, and that should help our running game.

No......

Nerve? No…..Patience and Good playcalling yes!! Just because Weave doesnt work does not mean you do not pound it on 2nd and 3rd!! But our Oline has got to do a better Job of getting a push!! and Weave has to be able to fall fwd for one yd……

We are always going to find someone to blame. This week its not McNabb so bring on the Big Red Renegade. I personally think it has more to do with our injuries and inexperience at this point.

I'm with ya

I didn’t think I’d say this about a coach the caliber of Andy Reid, but I do think he’s lost something. For all of the creative plays we’ve seen in the past, we’ve got NOTHING but dives when we run on 3rd and short. If it becomes abudantly clear that our offensive line is incapable of getting any type of push whatsoever, then it’s the coaches responsibility to figure something out, not just give up. What happened to the constant screens we used to run? McCoy dances WAY too much in the hole, make 1 move and accelerate. Send him towards the sideline, hit him with a quick screen and try to get a yard that way. Shit, that could have at least been one of the 4 plays by the goalline we had this past week!

by rharris0127 on Nov 17, 2009 11:34 AM EST reply actions

i don't agree

there’s no need to get creative with 1 yard to go…that’s sheer execution! Andy tried Weaver, and even threw Buckley in for a shot at it. Last week we’re mad at Andy for lining up in shotgun on 3rd and short…at some point the players have to execute the freaking play.

Can you imagine the barrage of hate Andy would have received if he had called something ‘clever’ on short yardage and it didn’t work? He would be brutalized b/c “why won’t he just pound the ball”?

its the playcalling

if i can watch the games and consistently call out run or pass, it’s reid or marty being too predictable. whoever is calling the plays need to stop calling passes at the beginning of the game, set up the run to run the play action pass you coaching idiots

by asdf1234 on Nov 17, 2009 3:56 PM EST reply actions

we came out looking to run

1st play of the offense…Westbrook run (2yds)
2nd play…Westbrook run (4yds)

but…in the Charger’s next possession, they scored, and before we looked up, they were up 14-0.

Andy doesn’t alter from the game plan much…but he will run the ball if it’s working. it was simply NOT WORKING Sunday

It never gets working any more.

These plays are token running plays. The largest Oline in the league probably spends all week backing up and pass protecting when they should be versed in earth moving.

When is the last time anyone saw a trap play? You have Brian Westbrook and McCoy on this team and no traps? Whuh?

Reid has no mind for football

He does not use his players to the best of their ability. Consequently we are stuck in this limbo. It is time for a change at the head coaching position

Indeed.

I wonder if Bil Cowher can “yes we can” us to a Super Bowl. Big backs, a bowl-you-backwards running game and staunch offensive line play? That’s change we can get behind!
