Brent Celek has a little Captain in him

League shipwrecks Captain Morgan campaign

Captain Morgan may have pulled off the quietest and shortest-lived advertising ambush in sports history last Sunday. One that was almost universally unknown, barely noticed, and yet, promptly squashed by the NFL this week.

Captain Morgan intended to offer lucrative charity contributions in exchange for each instance a player was caught on camera doing its pose during a game. The contributions were earmarked for the Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund – a non-profit which helps retired NFL players with various hardships after leaving the game.

Star-divide

It seems that Celek jumped the gun and the campaign was set to be unveild next week, so they didn't even get a good opportunity to take advantage of what I think is a brilliant marketing campaign.

What I find interesting is this little diddy ...

“The issue is that players are specifically prohibited under our policies from wearing, displaying, promoting or otherwise conveying their support of a commercially identified product during a game while they’re on the field,”

Is this true? Don't players wear Addidas, Reebok, or Nike gear during games?

It's not as if the players were holding up signs that say DRINK ALCOHOL.  I understand when they stop players from wearing gear with names and emblems on them during press conferences because that is pretty direct advertising.  I don't see these two acts to be the same and In my opinion this was harmless and the NFL yet again over reacted.

I guess I understand....But

U can’t do this, U can’t do that. U can’t have fun. U can’t enjoy the game that u play day in and day out. U can’t. The NFL takes so much away from us fans in terms of watching our players enjoy there professional JOB! When it comes down to it im my eyes, They play a GAME for there JOB!

NFL strikes again….I never ends

The horrible thing is… he did it for a good cause and now its banned.

In hopes of raising brand awareness, Captain Morgan intended to offer lucrative charity contributions in exchange for each instance a player was caught on camera doing its pose during a game. The contributions were earmarked for the Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund – a non-profit which helps retired NFL players with various hardships after leaving the game.

There is advertizing all over the NFL, and to be honest, I had no idea what he was doing until they had mentioned in on TV. I think its straight ludacris.

Avant Helped Celek get his leg up a lil!

BS call though…

They classified it as “a Group celebration”

Stand back he’s celebrating. Are high fives considered group celebration too?

Further proof the league (Goodell) is in it for themselves.

Tagliabue would have been somewhat OK with this. He knew it would go to a good cause. I hope every NFL player who scores next week does this to show solidarity. Wonder how Goodell would react to that?

Goodell’s reaction: He would LOVE IT!!! More money for him so he could go on a nice vacation (or pay the refs off for that matter).

Dude

When a player gets fined it DOESNT go to Goddell. I’m pretty sure it’s donated to charity. To think it goes to Goodell is ludacris.

Sorry...

I’m still a little…errr very bitter about this. It was gonna go to a good cause. I always thought it went to Goodell. Ur right: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20071209085904AAfZx1E. Don’t know how reliable that is. But they should still do it to show solidarity and all of them give the fines to the gridiron greats fund.

I was curious to see who the drummer was. Ringo’s kid. By chance did u see Entwistle play, citing he died that same year.

I expected to see Entwistle play since I had gotten the tickets the first week in June, but he died on the 27th so I didn’t end up seeing him. I saw them July 29th, so it was about a month later.

Of course they played that but in all reality, I missed another legend of the Who by 31. As Keith Moon is by far one of my favorite drummers.

great call… absolutely love it.
by the way, we need to talk more about how celek has been an absolute BEAST this year. He’s quietly one of the best seasons for any TE in the NFL.

Hypocrites

The NFL is full of advertising. The only reason they banned this is because they aren’t getting a cut. Disgusting.

by bdawk4ever on Nov 12, 2009 7:00 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

It kinda makes sense

if you ran a business that thrived on advertising money, would you make some people pay and allow other people to circumvent that and advertise for free?

I bet the NFL has no problem with money going to charity but didn’t want to set the precedent for guerilla marketing campaigns. Although I think that’s hella creative on Captain Morgan’s part.

(Yeah, I like to use ‘hella’ every now and again just to see if people are paying attention)

They need to do a Brent Celek "NFL Fantasy Files"!!

Something like; One guy says, “Yo is that Brent Celek!” And the other guy replies, “Yea. Celek’s a beast look at that!” Celek says, “What’s up guys, I never get enough of this, watch!”

A trainer puts the football through a “Football Throwing Machine” and while wearing a harness strapped to a Cement Truck, Celek pulls the truck, running through three cement walls and catching the ball!

Celek looks at the camera and says, “Just my daily routine. Pick me, its your move!”

What's funny is Captain Morgan sets up a tent near the Spectrum on game day

They have a guy dressed as the captain and some babes in tight outfits giving out free Captain Morgan swag.

And an earlier poster was right, Celek has been a beast this year.

Sometimes it's just fun to take the family for a spin around the lake in the old boat. Even if it's not your family or your boat, and they're screaming for you to stop.

I’ve gotten free captain stuff at a bunch of games, ranging from worthless stuff like CM dogtags that I only take because I’ve been drinking, to useful, like a free longsleeve t-shirt.

It’s funny that Celek probably only got a penalty because Avant needed to help him.

by BrianS on Nov 13, 2009 4:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

If you are an official sponsor

You can do anything you want unis, footage, etc. If you are not you can not. It still sucks. Just like the NFL to stifle any charity contributions.

Players should just wait until the game is over and have a like the whole O line do it on camera. Game over, no penalty but maybe a fine.

by boknows71 on Nov 13, 2009 11:59 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

it's good for the sport

even though the nfl goes too far to crack down on TD celebrations, its needed because most of the idiotic nfl players will eventually cross the line and do something incredibly stupid. the players always want the camera on them and if td celebrations are allowed, players will keep doing more outrageous things to raise the bar for more attention. it’s sad the nfl has to implement a rule like this due to the immaturity of nfl players.

on the other hand, brent celek is kicking a$$ this year and have made all eagles fan forget about that scrub lj smith.

by asdf1234 on Nov 13, 2009 1:35 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

So?

I like the crazy celebrations, I never find any of them “stupid”. Look if you just scored a TD in the NFL, wouldn’t you want to celebrate however you wanted? I would.

Their job is to catch a ball, it shouldn’t be taken so seriously. I don’t care if he has a 10 minute tea party, its a game!

I dig celebrations

I do not dig the penalties they draw though. Just win the fucking game, celebrate afterwards, as a team.
