NFL official: Spot on McNabb sneak should have been moved
You all remember the play... Last week, at around midfield Donovan McNabb ran a QB sneak on 4th down that the officials spotted short of a first down. Replays showed that McNabb was well ahead of where the ball was spotted, but officials instead upheld the ruling on the field.
Mike Pereira. Vice President of NFL Officiating, disagreed with the ruling.
"I think I'd move it," Pereira said. "There was a camera angle that showed exactly where the ball was when McNabb's elbow hit the ground. The Eagles logo at midfield provided a reference point. The spot where the ball was when McNabb's elbow touched the ground did not match the placement of the ball by the referees."
Well thanks... NOW you realize it!

Almost NEVER disagrees with a call, so this is a very rare admission of a blown call.
It only makes me madder.

Inexcusable.
I would almost rather he back his shitty officials call then confirm we were all correct because there’s jackshit that can be done about it now.
Not like it was a critical play or anything…

agreed I’d rather him continue to say they got the call correct than admit it was wrong. It just infuriates me to know end. I’m not saying this is the reason we lost but it was a pivotal moment in a close game and the refs had SEVERAL chances and angles to get it correct and missed it.

Agreed. This not only killed our drive, erased our last time out, and destroyed our momentum, but it also set up the long Austin TD. If we get the first, Austin doesn’t get the TD. If Austin doesn’t get the TD, Eagles win.
About 10 minutes ago, I was pondering my own existence. Then I decided that it didn't matter.

Yup, because a questionable spot was the exact reason you lost. Nothing to do with all the inane decisions made by Reid, or the fact that Romo pumpfaked 3 of your DB’s out of their shoes, and Miles proceeded to split them.
Face it, Philly wasn’t good enough to win this round. Next time should be a hell of a fight.

If the call was made correctly, Romo wouldnt have had the chance to do that pump fake. The blow call was directly related to the exact reason we lost, so by the transitive property, it was the reason we lost.

Because the transitive property always works in football right? Does this mean because the Raiders beat the Eagles, and the Eagles beat the Giants, the Raiders should beat the Giants, right? I hope to god that was a troll comment, because if you actually feel that way, then that is sad.

In other news ....worst non call ever
Samuel is holding the hand of a receiver way before the ball gets to the players, in plain sight to everyone but the referee…….It was a big play by holding his left arm down , so that he couldn’t get but one hand on the ball and not able to bring it in. Wait , Philly fans dismiss this cause well like any fan they say it really doesnt matter to the game. But their 4 and 1 did and lost the game for them. It happened and yes it was big as that could have been a 4 points more. It is what it is!!! Bad spot for sure…..second spot bad for sure went Eagles way, but not one word on that …go figure. Things happened going against both teams and well if we would have lost it would be hard to swallow too.

its just that it didnt happen quite as much in crunch time… i hear what you are saying, but a 4th and one spot that was reviewed is apples and oranges from what you are talking about which is not reviewable

bad calls happen and I wouldn’t be as upset with this if it wasn’t reviewed. The fact is it was reviewed and they still got it wrong.
I don’t care if it was a first down or not they should have at least re-spotted the ball and re-measured. They owed us that, especially at a part of the field where there is a legitimate mark to judge on. If this were at some green spot in the field with no lines I can understand not being able to define a spot but this was pretty clear.

bye dawk I know you have the game recorded
watch it, watch where the stick is at when they pull the measurement it just past the tip of the beak on the logo, the ball is 4 to 6 inches short of the beak where McNabb is laying, it still was not a first down. The ball should have moved forward 6 inches and you needed a foot.
These refs were horrible, they missed calls both ways, Samuels hanging on Williams arm in the end zone, ticky tacky push off call on Witten, missing the push of on the touchdown, ect-ect-
It’s a shame such a great game was called so poorly.

by Bye, Dawk :( on Nov 12, 2009 2:00 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I'm watching it right now,
I know you have it, watch it, the stick is right on the tip of the beak, just past it actually and there is 4 inches from the ball to the tip where McNabb finishes sliding down. It is still short. Poorly spotted but so was the come back rout to McCoy and they didn’t move it either. The refs didn’t move the ball when they both were clearly bad spots but the results would not have changed anything.
by Musiccitynorm on Nov 12, 2009 2:05 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Unfortunately I agree
and after it was photoshopped as accurately as possible
I found the images online at Igglesblog, so I dont take any credit for them but as much as I hated that we didn’t get the call, I don’t think we got the first down.
I’ve been saying that if we need to blow 2 timeouts for a few inches, that that is more on us, then it is the refs. Crucial plays like this, especially for a few inches, a strong team like we are should be able to get them undisputably.
by Team Serbia on Nov 12, 2009 2:30 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
More people need to look at these images, take off their green tinted glasses, and understand that this is clear evidence. Even with the spot, McNabb still is short about 6 inches. Sorry.

No
It was a first down. If you compare to where the sticks are at when the measure after the blown call, its a first down.
And even if it wasn’t, the Eagles till have a timeout remaining.
by bdawk4ever on Nov 12, 2009 3:10 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I'd like to add one more thing
For the Cowboys fans that preach that the refs missed PI calls and all that. Refs will miss calls, but you can’t compare it to us challenging the call, the refs taking a look at it from multiple angles and still deciding that they got it right. Obviously I don’t think we got the first down, but they still messed up the placement but you can’t compare a missed call and a missed call after it was under review. Two different things.

I see your fancy pictures and nice work but I also have a tv where I can pause and there are other caps where the ball is further forward than where you chose to stop it. The fact is once contacted the play is given that spot then can only move forward not backward on the way to the ground, therefor McNabb should have been given forward progress which would have been a first down.

Roy Williams should be strong enough to pull his arm around or at least make an effort to draw the call he just went with it and expected to get the call without making a legit effort to catch the ball. As a referee I’m not giving a player a call when he tries to take the easy way out.

As obviously disgusting as this call was, what I considered to be the best part was: 2nd & 1: McCoy. 3rd & 1: McCoy. 4th & 1: McNabb.
And while these calls were happening I was seething with anger screaming at the tv “THIS IS WHY YOU HAVE A WEAVER! FOR THIS FUCKING SITUATION SPECIFICALLY,” and my dad was equally upset, saying “With the number of times that they had run Weaver in the game, if they lined him up in the backfield all alone and ran play action, everyone would bite- they’d have to. There would be at least two wide open receivers downfield.”
It’s really not a complicated game, is it?
And what really made it for me was that on a later possession, we had a 3rd & 1, and holy crap, we ran Weaver who basically picked Smith up with one arm and used him as a human battering ram to drive forward for three yards. No fuss, no muss. Because that’s what a real fullback does, and would have done in the earlier situation if only Reid had had any inkling of what he was doing and called for it.

he spends a lot of time on our board and he’s generally respected there.
Much respect for the eagles from me, good team, but so are the Cowboys and your team underestimated them.
1/2 a season left and lots of things could happen from then to now, and yes injuries do matter unlike last year. small jab there in case you missed it.

Keep in mind
We also lost to the Raiders by the same margin. So beating us doesn’t prove you’re a good team, it proves you’re capable of beating a team that also lets itself get beat by the Raiders.

underestimated
Really, i did not see anything in that game that suggested the Eagles underestimated Dallas, a team that had won three in a row and whose offense was on fire offensively?? Please prove to me how the Eagles underestimated Dallas? Because even though they lost, i certainly did not see that.

They’re all still seriously butthurt over 44-6. We emasculated them, so now they have to pretend like a 4 point win = a 38 point asskicking.

Romo has no Superbowls after being a starter for 3 years…….
you are right… he is young, but its more the way he chokes and always finds a way to lose in the playoffs or late in the season. In my opinion he is the exact opposite of Tom Brady… Brady has that look, like" We’re gonna find a way to get the win". Romo looks like a deer in the headlights as if he’s wondering how he will lose it this time

I agree he is not that mature in big games.....I don't put the Giants playoff game on him
cause he did all he could……Crayton should’ve caught the ball and thats what he is paid to do. All in all when a team loses big games it always goes back to the QB. Do I agree with it all being put on the QB? No, not one bit. But thats how today’s NFL games are being portrayed. In the philly case, I have seen when they play badly people always seem to go after Mcnabb. Thats hard for me to swallow and I differ in the opinion because there are 52 other men on a 53 man roster that have a little something to do with the outcome of games as well.

by jayt on Nov 12, 2009 3:08 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
no,
Collinsworth explains that on the first challenge on McCoy, you still lose the challenge if you don’t get the first down. That seems stupid to me.
by Musiccitynorm on Nov 12, 2009 3:21 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Here’s how it works… You get 2 challenges. If you use both, and both challenges result in a call reversal, you get an additional 3rd challenge. However, if a team uses both challenges and doesn’t get BOTH right, that’s it – No more challenges.
So had the refs gotten the call right and moved the spot on the McNabb sneak (which would have made the challenge successful), they still would be out of challenges since they were unsuccessful on the McCoy challenge.

Now that I’ve thought about this and watched the replay entirely too much, I am thinking McNabb did a pretty shitty job here. He never extends his arms. Yes it’s risking a fumble but it’s 4th down. Had he extended his arms he makes the 1st with ease.
Who am I kidding they probably still would have blown the call.

Good Game - Hard call
I can’t say whether or not it was a first down or if it would have mattered. The pictures shown as proof are not concrete enough only because the pictures being matched to one another are the incorrect pictures. There was forward progress before Mc Nabb’s elbow hit the ground. So It might be better if we can get the pic where forward progress is displayed then compare it to the sticks. Not that it would matter much now but it would be nice to see.

BS - Easy Call
Calling it on the field is hard, but he had all the time in the world to review.. he should have made the right (and then easy) call that the ball was not placed where it was taken to.. and moved it. If that position was a First Down or not doesn’t matter, at the very least he stole a time out… Reversing the call and moving the ball doesn’t mean first down (that depends on where he puts it), but it does mean we don’t get charged that last timeout…
by Sparki on Nov 12, 2009 9:56 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Basically
We beat ourselves and lost to a mediocre team. The refs didn’t help, and if a couple of things went the other way we could have won this thing by about two touchdowns.
But we didn’t. And you know what? It hurts, but this team needed a wake-up call. I’d rather lose to the Cowboys and play like a team that is capable of beating the Saints than continue to sleepwalk through the season.

One play that sticks out in my mind is-
and this is actually a compliment to demarcus ware, but if he doesnt hit mcnabb’s arm as he threw that bomb to maclin its 6 points. Maclin split the D perfectly. Literally 1/10 of a second makes the difference there

Yeah but you still missed my point. The “Samuel PI” was never publicly acknowledged, nor was it admitted that the called was botched. So, in a sense, that one exists only in the minds of Cowboys fans.
The 4th and 1 call was addressed and explained as incorrect, while the Samuel PI was not. That is the major difference between the two, so I really didn’t prove your point at all.

Get over it. If they had played better, this play would not have made any difference!

I guess we’ll have to blow out every team from now on, just in case a pivotal call doesn’t go our way.

Wow you all need to grow up
If we need to blow 2 timeouts for a few inches that is on us. Are we actually going to blame the refs? It wasn’t even a first down. I’m more worried about the fact that we can’t get a few inches then I am on blaming the refs. We played bad, Dallas played better, end of story.
Even with an extra timeout, Reid still opts for a FG instead of going for it on 4th down, and Dallas needs an extra first down that seemed like it would come with ease how the defense was playing at the end. Even if they don’t get it, we’d get the ball back with like 30 seconds left and attempt to drive down the field with no timeouts.
Let it go, both teams played bad but we played worse. Focus on San Diego and hope to god we don’t get into another 4th and inches if the game is close, cause its embarrasing how we can’t convert those.

Serbia
The point here is we can convert those, in fact short yardage has been awesome for the eagles this year apart from the dallas game, they have converted like 70 percent this year, so its actually against the norm if they DONT convert, hence even more frustration with such a pivotal missed call.

When it matters
It doesn’t seem like we convert. I watched the video of that play a million times, and the ball never breaks that end of the beak. From the pictures we can see that the first down marker is about 6-8 inches from the end of the beak. This play didn’t lose us the game, not even close.

Do you agree...
The spot should have been moved? If you agree that, then we lost a very valuable time out, and a chance to remeasure for the first down, to say this call did not affect the game is to be completely blind, to me it is blatantly obvious it affected the outcome of the game whether it would have been a first down or not.
by PhilsForever on Nov 13, 2009 5:12 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Tell me how it affects it?
I do believe the spot should have been moved, so yes we save a time out. How would it change the outcome much? After the first play they ran, Reid would have called a time out, as its the logical thing to do. Romo still completed his pass to Witten for a first down, and therefore game over. But lets say things change with the timeout, and they are forced to punt. We get the ball back with less than a minute and no timeouts. Do you think we would have scored a TD? Mcnabbs not known for being clutch, but lets looks past that. Dallas would run a prevent defense and disable a long play. So barring some practically impossible drive, we still lose.
