Joselio Hanson suspended for four games
Philadelphia Eagles' nickel back Joselio Hanson has been suspended for four games by the NFL for violating the league's policy on performance enhancing drugs. This from Adam Schefter's twitter:
Hanson took a diuretic before last season's NFC Championship game, tested positive after game, and lost his appeal Tuesday.
Hanson will begin his suspension by sitting out this Sunday's game at San Diego. He will also miss games at Chicago, versus Washington, and at Atlanta. He will be eligible to return from on December 13 when the Eagles take on the Giants in New York.
I've been super busy today.. so I cribbed this from our pals at SBNation.com

No, Hanson will go on the inactive list, so he doesn’t occupy a roster spot.

He’ll replace one of the corners.

This seems extremely unfair to me...
Pat Williams and Kevin Williams have temporarily survived suspensions they receive for the usage of Star Caps due to some weird Minnesota workplace laws. As a result, two Saints players, Will Smith and Charles Grant, have also escaped suspensions because Roger Goodell deemed that it would be unfair to suspend Smith and Grant, while Williams and Williams can still play. The banned substance in the Williams/Williams/Smith/Grant case was Star Caps, which contains a diuretic called bumetanide.
So should Joselio Hanson be suspended for usage of a diuretic when 4 other players have temporarily escaped that same fate? To me, it doesn’t matter whether the diuretic was Star Caps or some other banned diuretic. If one team gets preferential treatment (in this case, two), then why should Hanson have to serve his suspension now?
If this suspension is upheld, the Eagles have a legitimate beef.

Unfair is not even the word for this
This is simply just NOT RIGHT! They can’t justify this becuz of the whole Viking twins case! I guarantee the media as a whole in general will have a field day with this. Writing and talking comparing the Vikings case and how this doesn’t justify the ruling. I Hope this gets national coverage to put heat on the NFL. We need that. Because this is not right at all!!

You seem to note in the first sentence ...
… that the crux of this case is really about state laws. The NFL held back on the Saints suspensions while the Vikings battle this out in court … perhaps Joselio’s case is different enough, or Pa. workplace laws are different enough, that the same won’t be true.
Or perhaps Joselio will be allowed to remain active the same way the Saints players have. Is it actually time to panic yet, or is there a chance this could all be put on hold?

Minnesota is apparently the only state with laws in place that would affect this situation, so Hanson is pretty much in the same boat as the Saints players. However, my point here is that they granted the Saints players a reprieve, so why not Hanson?
I don’t know what specific drug Hanson took, and it probably wasn’t Star Caps, so that’s the major difference. But that said, the banned substance in Star Caps is a diuretic, as was Hanson’s. Hanson would basically be suspended for pretty much the same thing the Vikings and Saints players were, but because it didn’t happen around the same time-frame and it isn’t the exact same drug (although very similar), Hanson it out for 4 games, but the other guys aren’t.
To answer your question on the possibility of the suspension being put on hold, it doesn;t look that way. The league has already spoken, and there’s not much time left until Sunday. If I’m the Eagles, I’m already on the phone to Roger Goodell complaining vehemently about this one.

I don't know
I would’ve thought Hanson was in the same boat with the Saints guys too.
Here it is in excruciating detail:

I didn’t realize this had been going on since the NFCCG

Me neither. But that article kind of backs up what I’m saying, and obviously Hanson’s lawyer and I think alike. This is total horseshit. If you suspend Hanson, the Saints players should also be suspended immediately.

Roger Goodell is an absolutely horrible commissioner.

Totally agree
If the Saints players get to be kept on the active roster and can play, then Hanson should receive the same treatment!! This is really now different based on principle! Minor differences but still the same kinda of situation

confussed
What confusses me is that it’s a rule in the NFL. So personally I think that the VIKINGS and the SAINTS players should be suspended. I don’t give it a shit if it’s not a state law in Minnesota. It’s a NFL rule to me that’s what is decided on here…the NFL rules not the state laws on this one. I think the Min. twins are getting off completely!

Awful timing for Hanson ...
… with Hobbs also out. And Samuel coming off a less than good game.
My initial thoughts were to wonder if 1) we’re going to dial back the defense for the next four weeks, 2) we’re going to see a lot more Dmitri Patterson and Jack Ike will be moved off the practice squad (as noted above), or 3) would we see more Demps and Macho (if healthy) in coverage during nickel and dime packages.
I’m sure this is all being discussed somewhere, but I like to start on the front page and work inward.
Thoughts? Is there an option I’ve missed?

Question
Maybe everyone knows this but me, but how do diuretics enhance performance?
by 999 on Nov 11, 2009 5:32 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
They don’t. They make you piss. People use them as a masking agent to flush other substances out of their bodies.

Double Standard...
no doubt. This really sounds like total bullshit to me. Fuck Goodell!
But how dumb do you have to be to take a pill without knowing exactly what it is? I mean who the hell gave this to him anyway?
Note to all Eagles players: Please avoid overeating at P.F. Changs before all games.

This is what I was talking about
Goodell and the NFL upper echelon are proving that they are indeed “selective” with there gavel. Example, fining some players for touching a QBs shins, but letting other players go who blatantly drive on a QB after he’s down in the endzone resulting in broken ribs! Or not coming down hard enough on Belichick after getting caught cheating for NFL games. The man straight up cheated to win NFL games. Ok, everyone might do it, then make Belichick example. I know Reid doesn’t cheat, if he does, he’s horrible at it with this inconsistent team! HAHA. Point is, they’re selective with whom and how they punish a person.
