Sean Jones Locked in at FS
With his performance on Sunday, Sean Jones has locked himself into the Free Safety position for good. He began the season as the backup at the SS spot, but has recently solidified himself as a leader on the defensive unit of the Eagles. Of course, that’s what he was signed to be in the offseason free agency period, but was outplay
ed by rookie Macho Harris in the preseason and therefore missed out on an opportunity to start. However, when Harris suffered an ankle injury in Week 7 against the Redskins, Jones (pictured, #26) was thrust into the starting lineup and has not looked back.
There is no question that the former Brown, who happens to lead the league in interceptions over the past three seasons, has the physical ability to man the position that the legendary Brian Dawkins did. Obviously he is not as aggressive as Dawkins was, but he has done a nice job filling out the secondary. In only a pair of starts, Jones has racked up 11 tackles and has been able to constantly place pressure on opposing Quarterbacks. Overall, he is tied for 6th place on the team in terms of most tackles (with 26 and all but 4 of them being solo). He has also recorded a sack and notched two pass deflections. As if they aren’t enough to insure that the athletic Safety has earned a starting role, he has compiled these statistics and performances against primarily explosive offenses, such as the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys.
Whether you feel Macho Harris deserves to return to his starting position or not, there is no doubting that Sean Jones has played well and should at least garner some respect. Besides, it’s up to the coaching staff to decide who starts and who doesn’t. As witnessed last week when Harris was seen only on special teams plays, it is clear Jones has locked himself into the FS position.

great! good choice…like macho but he needs some more NFL training! I thought it would be extremely hard to go from a veteran leader to a rookie Safety

Agreed.
I like his toughness b/c it can help our depleted LB corps in the middle of the field, but it would be extra nice to see him add to his pick total from teh last three years.

I remember predicting before training camp that Jones would win the starting job at FS. Guess I was off by about 8 weeks haha.
That being said, congrats to Jones for winning the starting role! I’m looking forward to seeing his first INT as an Eagle.

yeah I was excited about this pickup too
I wanted him to start all season, I’m glad he’s got the opportunity!

Good read as always.
But Sean Jones is actually 3rd in the league in interceptions over the last 3 seasons. First is Ed Reed, then Oshiomogho Atogwe, and then Sean Jones.

i think Jones stays at FS
and Macho will have more looks at his original position of CB. Were obviously having issues with keeping a healthy bunch and to be quite honest asante gets hurt practically every week (but the son of a bitch comes right back on sunday) and dont get me wrong asante is my fav player on the team but it wouldnt hurt to let macho get a couple nickle snaps over hanson.

You know the reason Miles Austin made that touchdown is because Sean Jones took the wrong angle on a tackle.

or because Sheldon Brown bit on a short slant in front of the sticks, or because Mikell didn’t go over top when he saw Sheldon follow on the short slant … that whole play was a disaster.
I’m still trying to figure out how you bite on a short route in front of the sticks on a 3rd and long … let him fucking catch it and tackle him before the marker … this is day one stuff

I don’t blame Jones at all or Mikell. Look at the tape Sheldon should have never had bit on the fake slant in. There was a linebacker covering the TE. But the TE never came out he stayed in to block that puts the LB in perfect position to defend the quick slant to Austin and Sheldon should have never bit and stayed back to cover the deep route/double move. I 100% blame Sheldon on this one, he’s a vet and should know better. That is what film study is all about and why you spend hours going over it the week before the game to put yourself in the right position.

If there is one knock on Sheldon's game...
It’s biting on pump fakes. I remember him doing that two other times this season. Both times the reciever ran a streak and was WIDE open at least five yards from Sheldon for a possible TD. Luckily, both times the QB didn’t look that way. I remember one was Campbell missing Moss on MNF. This time he wasn’t so lucky.

I don’t care of course Sheldon messed up and he’s accountable for that but Jones and Mikell had a chance to stop the play from being a touchdown it could’ve just been a catch for a chunk of yards if they made the tackle. I’ll be honest though I really like Macho and don’t think he deserved to lose his job he made great tackles when they came his way and put the brakes on a lot of big plays.

By the way...
Sheldon gave up only one touchdown in the entirety of last season.

An it was in the Championship game.
He was perfect the whole regular season +2 playoff games. I still don’t know how he didn’t make the pro bowl last year.

I have long been a Sean Jones guy
and I like having him and Mikell back there. I think we’ll see a lot more Demps and maybe some Macho in coverage as long as we’re down two CBs.
That said, the Miles Austin play wasn’t his fault, but the angle he took turned it from a tackle/possible FG att. to a TD.
That was the first time I really saw Jones make a bad play. All his other notable Eagles plays that I can think of have been positive.
Glad they got him up to speed. I hope it keeps up and he signs an extension to stay here. I really like his game, and I like our depth and versatility at S.
Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome
