Eagles 40 Giants 17: The Good, Bad, and Stupid
What the title says.
This is honestly the best performance I've seen the Eagles turn out in a long time. It was a huge win for us today, and so many positive things came out of this game.
THE GOOD
DeSean Jackson - Is this guy human?
Donovan McNabb - After a dismal performance against Oakland, and a less-than-impressive outing versus the Redskins, Super Five showed why he is one of the top QBs in the League. 17 for 23, 240 yards, 3 TDs, and no picks. He also had one 14 yard scramble. Great game, Don.
Asante Samuel - For some reason, this guy always seems to have a pick against Eli Manning. He's already got 5 on the year. With all due respect to Asomgua (sp?), Asante could very well be...the best corner in the NFL.
Jeremy Maclin - Mac was well covered by Corey Webster, and still went up and snagged the ball for his 3rd TD this year. He should be a solid player for years to come. Jackson, Maclin, Avant. I don't know about you guys, but that sounds like a stellar wideout corps.
Balance - On offense, the Birds attempted 23 pass plays, and 24 run plays. McCoy and Weaver both had big runs for TDs. Seriously, when's the last time you've seen an Eagles fullback run for a 40+ yard touchdown?
Akeem Jordan and Sean Jones - In my opinion, Jordan is the most underrated player on this team. He lead the way with 9 tackles, 8 of them solo. Jones stepped in nicely for Macho Harris at FS, generating 6 tackles. He also had good pressure on the QB.
THE BAD
Brian Westbrook - His absence had little (if any) impact on the team. I really like Westy, but as much as I hate to say it, he isn't the player he once was. #36 is a free agent after this year, and I wouldn't be surprised if we released him.
Jason Babin - He lost that fumble on the kickoff. The least he could've done was knock it out of bounds. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure he had at least one flag. It seemed like he was in the game a little too much.
Second half - We had plenty of bright sports in the second half, but we just weren't as good as we were in the first half. The same thing happened against Washington. I really want to see us play how we did in the first half for an entire game.
THE STUPID
The Wildcat - We only ran it once today (a 4-yard scramble by Vick for a first), but I still think it's a waste of a down every time I see it. The wildcat playbook is quickly growing old. Sorry, Dolphins fans.
The fact that there are Cowboys fans out there that think they can beat us next week - What more needs to be said?
GO BIRDS!!

I was thinking the same thing about babin, just bat that ball out of bounds. i dont think the ball was going out.
dude
Jason Babin had a sack, and that fumble is kind of a given when a DE has to catch a kickoff, how many times do you see a nonreturner fumble the ball on a kickoff, but w.e at least the whole special teams learned something, and it came at the expense of practically nothing, so thats a plus
That 44-6 eagles cowboys game on Dec. 29/2008 was the best game i've ever seen
double dude
I am a big fan of Babin, but he also had a horsecollar called when he tackled Peyton Manning. It was a questionable call, but this was not Jason’s best day. I really like his hustle and his aggressiveness, but these two problems were both symptoms of more balls than brains.
I think some good coaching will get him back on the right track. And hey, he’s had like two sacks in two weeks. That kind of performance is worth coaching through some bad decisions.
Whoops... wrong manning.
Those Mannings all look the same to me…
That horsecollar was bullshit though
he had manning by the jersey, several inches below the collar

That horse collar was dumb.
he had the jersey not the pad and Manning was trying to get the first, if babin didnt hit him then he wouldve gotten the first and maybe alot more yardage.
thats Cobb on Kolb crime if you ask me... as said by yophillybro
Dude
That wasn’t even a wild cat play. It was just Vick in @ QB…and it worked.. The hate for the wildcat/Vick is unfounded.
E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!
ok
so by your account we ran the wild cat zero times today and came out on top of our division rival by 23 points. And he shouldn’t hate the wildcat why?
its not that i dont like the wildcat
I do, and I think it works, but this seems like the first time we have used it in the right situation, 3rd and short. W always parade Vick on the field for 1st and long and he grabs 3 yards and leaves the field with questions about our use of him, the wild cat should be getting us short yardage plays for the first down.
is it?
the guy hasn’t done a fucking thing. every other player that takes snaps in the wildcat does better than him. reid needs to keep him on the sidelines.
"it's like i tell my ex-wife, i never drive faster than i can see, and besides it's all in the reflexes." -Jack Burton, Big trouble in little China
I could not have said this better myself
Jason Peters would be more of a threat in the wildgimmick than Vick. What the hell are we doing with this stupid clown on our team?
"Right now Winston Justice is the guy...until that person gets back out there"
Funny
Jason Peters started his college career as a Tight End and actually might be effective with the ball in his hands on a trick play.
Cornelius Ingram started his college career as a QB. Before he got injured – and before we got Vick – I had dared to imagine a wildcat scenario – like last year with Herrreman’s TD – where Peters declaress eligable and Ingram hits him with a (short) pass.
I would not want to try to tackle Jason Peters and I have seen him push three defenders down field at once during a run. Takes a lot to stop a mountain on the move.
For once McNabb actually played good, and look what happens… I was very pleased with the performance all around… I think that the use of Weaver and McCoy was really nice, especially with both of them having big gainers (a full back with a 40yrd run WHAT?). Good day, bring the same performance and intensity next week! FLY EAGLES FLY
We know Weaver was fast.
We just kind of forgot.
mcnabb struggles
when we make him throw 40+ times.he only threw 23 attempts and look what happened

McNabb was AWESOME!

+1
the thing that confuses me is that he has had many games like this in the past where his attempts were relatively low and we ran the ball more and come out with then win … then they abandon that gameplan in the next week??? dont understand it … i just hope we keep a similar game plan for next week vs dallas for 1st place in the division … damn it feels good saying that
ya
i think peters is getting more into it and now heremans is back, could be devastating for any defence if we keep running it throught them

BABIN !!!
Keep truck’n Babin. It wasnt the best game for him so far outside of the line..but I AINT mad at him. They kickoff was the ONLY mistake. That “horse collar” was NOT a horse collar! It was a BS call playing favoritism to Eli. Babin grabbed a fist full of jeresy along with Elis name print. I can’t stand refs playing the “Bias” game. Brady, the Mannings, all these guys get the red carpet cuz they are not known as “mobile QBs”. Yet u got Dmac playing with BROKEN RIBS after a BLATANT late hit IN THE ENDZONE that was not called. Why just cuz Dmac has the ability to move outside the pocket and use his legs to make a play!! So keep truckn’ Babin cuz he was puttin pressure on Eli all day as well.

Its been a while
Since we’ve had a CONSTANT pass rush opposite Trent Cole. The past two weeks, Babin has been given the O-lines some heat! We’ve needed a player like him for a while now.!!
"... You play to win the game. Hello? You play to win the game. You don't play it to just play it. That's the great thing about sports: you play to win..."
Really Happy
to see Babin suiting up and producing. And what about that Clemons sack early? Was Babin was the first one there, had his ankles wrapped. The kickoff slip-up was just that. Wet field there.
the cowboys
didn’t lose to the Raiders…
I am looking forward to a wild game.
that which doesn't kill you, probably hurts like hell.
yeah, and the giants beat them 44-to something
that means nothing boy
Weapon X eats babies for breakfast.
The cowboys have also not beaten anyone impressive
with the exception of the falcons. Before that game, the Cowboys looked mediocre at best. So they had one good game, and yesterday they beat the Seahawks…AWESOME!
While I can’t quite start bragging about my eagles, this win over the Giants proved that we were legitimate, and this wasn’t a close win.
If our attack stays balanced, and McNabb stays accurate…this offense if UNSTOPPABLE!!!!!!

But they are hot RIGHT NOW.
And that is all that matters in the NFL. This will be a good game and a good test. I can’t wait.
Good - Weaver
Don’t forget he worked like a incredible powerback and was overall seemed more effective than McCoy for much of the game

My thoughts...
I didn’t blame Babin for the kickoff muff because he’s a defensive end. In that situation the team should have had its good hands people in the game to prevent stuff like that. That one was on the coaches.
Maclin and McCoy are already good players….at age 21. I’m willing to bet the NFC East isn’t looking forward to seeing these guys hit their primes.
November and December usually are pretty good to the Eagles. Heres hoping for more of the same.
I’ve thought this for a while now…..but every week I believe more strongly that DeSean is the fastest man in the NFL. Like even when I put my tainted Eagles opinion aside, I really don’t think anyone is faster than him. The rest of the field just looks like they’re in slow motion every time he carries the ball. Hands down the most dangerous receiver in football right now.
About the only thing that could make me feel better than I did today is doing the same thing next Sunday night to you who who.
Both bad Babin plays...
… are coachable. With a little more ‘heads up’, he’ll be a good bookend for Cole. I love his aggessiveness and I hope like hell his attitude drives the team like Dawkin’s used to.
I watched him in the pre-season with Klecko psyching up the defense. He has a lot to add to this team.
I disagree.
Asante Samuel – For some reason, this guy always seems to have a pick against Eli Manning. He’s already got 5 on the year. With all due respect to Asomgua (sp?), Asante could very well be…the best corner in the NFL.
The reason why Asomugha is so good is because he literally cuts the field in half. He is a shut down specialist and is so good that he demands the attention from opposing Qbs…to an extent that they barely throw to him….which is why he doesn’t accumulate the stats.
"They say that nobody is perfect. Then they tell you practice makes perfect. I wish they'd make up their minds." - Wilt Chamberlain
I agree QBs don’t even throw near him … Asante is good he gambles and is athletic enough to recover but he is not a shut down corner.

Double that.
Asante is a great CB but Asomugha and Revis are far superior to him. I really think Revis is starting to pull a way from Nmadi as the best in the league.

Revis got destroyed by Ted Gin on MNF. He’s not touching Asomugha’s spot for a while.
RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

Good post
Good post but I differ on the ‘wildcat’ play though- I don’t think Don was on the field so it really wasn’t a true ‘wildcat’, just Vick in at QB – regardless it was third and short where we have obviously struggled in the recent past- Vick easily ran for the 1st-maybe bad D but maybe this is what Vick gives us….
Don't forget Celek
Had a TD and a great effort to get a first down when he put his hand on the ground to keep from going down. That effort to get the first down was my favorite play of the game.

I second that
Celek play where he wouldn’t go to the ground on third down. I heard someone last year during the NFC Championship game refer to Celek as a bowling ball… Isn’t fast, but get knocked down either. He just barrels forward for extra yards WITHOUT coughing up the ball. He’s really showing how athletic he is with those plays.
Smack it up, flip it, rub it down... OH NOOOooo!
That 1st down
was needed and AWESOME! When he refused to go down and hopped for 4 more yards
"What did it feel like? That collision, I didn't feel nothing, because he was pretty much defenseless. It was like running through a cardboard box. Seriously. Cardboard box."- Sheldon Brown on his pounding of Reggie Bush in the '06 Playoffs
Remember LJ
do you think he would have made that play???? NOT!!!!.. Celek might not be the second coming but he’s a character player with a good sense of the field… you win with guys like him!!! plus he covers up a multitude of mcnabb’s sins… go phils.
The vick play wasn't wildcat, mcnabb wasn't in
first let me say i’ve been against the wild cat/vick plays all year. BUT, if we run it ONCE and it works for a first down, i wouldn’t call it stupid. I’m fine with our use of such plays today.
No disrespect
and congratulations on the win, I look forward to the game next week, but there is no way Asante is the best corner in the league. I honestly don’t think he is even top 10.
The Knights season may have just ended, but the Cowboys year is just begining!
+1
It would save the Giants Defence a lot of time if QBs just stayed down!
by ChuckyofNorris on Nov 2, 2009 3:01 AM EST up reply actions
This whole argument is just stupid
Asante’s a great corner! He has 5 picks already this year. He also forgets how to tackle sometimes and just bounces off of guys.
But still, it would be stupid to think he’s not that good. If Romo thinks that, he’s going to get picked off. Samuel deserves some credit.

I dont mind if you think Asante isnt top ten...
But you have to admit hes top twenty. Whats even better is he isnt even the best CB on our team. Sheldon is a shut down corner. Nothing you can show me will dispute that becase it is a fact. Asante is a ball hawk and that is role on the team. Either way our D is still playing great. You can argue over ranks I’ll just argue that we shut people down.
by IgglesFanDeployd on Nov 2, 2009 8:20 AM EST up reply actions
agreed
when it comes to glory stats Zont is second in the league in INTs with 5 (CBs only). He is definitely top 10 just because he changes games you can’t coach that.

Well maybe we can get Lito back.
And there’s always Jack who we all know is better than Asante.
Me, I’ll keep him where he is.
second half
I think every team struggles a little bit to keep the pedal down when you’re up 23 at the half and have dominated in every facet of the game
Brent Celek is the man
As long as you mention the 14 yard scramble in #5's stat line...
you should include his 1 yard reception.
Of course we can beat you :D
The Cowboys have won the last two first meetings.
Kind of a lame thing to go by, but it’s true.
Anyway, rivalry time. Gonna be a fun week. Enjoy!
2009 Dallas Cowboys: 10-6
2009 New York Jets: 11-5?
2009-2010 Dallas Mavericks: 57-25
The Giants
Had won the last 4 games against the Eagles at the Linc, so you really can’t go by those stats.
The Cowboys have been playing better recently, but the Eagles played—for once—a really well-rounded game yesterday.
I expect a good game between the Eagles and Cowgirls.
let's be real!!!
the eagles just beat a beat up team… lots of good things happened but still very poor in terms of time of possession and getting the giants off the field on third downs… if that dosen’t improve, it’ll be cooked birds on sunday!!!! last week i posted a suggestion that reid try running weaver more often (let him pound the defense) and occasionally throw to avant on 1st/2nd down situations… well whaddya know? he used weaver more and it worked… he still hasn’t looked to avant enough… if he did it would really open things up for jackson and maclin… also, what about alex smith? now that celek is getting the attention i have to believe smith has to be wide open when he’s on the field… what’s his story anyway??? I thought he (smith) was a well regarded player…
mc nabb looked a lot better (obviously)…. but he’ll always be mcnabb… even though i call him a bonehead loser… i don’t hate the guy… on the contrary, he’s a very decent person and a gutsy player… i just wish we had a guy with really great qb skills… a modern day van brocklin or jurgensen…
uhh
be real.
but still very poor in terms of time of possession and getting the giants off the field on third downs
the reason our TOP was so low was because every time we went for a sustained drive they let us run down the field for a 50+ yard play (a la Weaver, McCoy, etc)
that still dosen't address
the fact that they converted so many third downs and gained over 350 yds… if we don’t score 50 yd plus plays thee’s always the chance of another raiders debacle…
as much as people jockin' mcnabb
you take out his game against the Raiders…
He’s the highest rated passer in the league….at 122.7
completing 67% of his passes…
“oh yeah, but numbers don’t tell the whole story…”
He has 9 TDs – but that doesn’t tell the whole story…
He has 1 INT – oh well, that’s because his balls are so bad, DBs can’t even catch ’em….
He’s 4-1 as a starter – oh, well that’s because the Bucs, Giants, Redskins and Panthers aren’t that good…and he lost to the stinkin’ Raiders!
His completion percentage is 60.2% – but that’s not the whole story – desean jackson had to wait for both his touchdown catches the last two weeks because McNabb didn’t hit him in stride…
Did I miss anything haters?
LMFAO
this isn't horseshoes... or friendly golf!!!
there are no do-overs or closest to the pin or mulligans… mcnabb is a bonehead loser… the raiders game counts (as does the giants, etc.) they are all refelective of his performance…. too many balls in the dirt… too many bad games… he’s a nice guy and a decent person but he’s not the second coming of montana… his apologists always point to his failures as the fault of his receivers…or his protection breaking down or his injuries or whatever??? when he does succeed it’s always because of his own wonderfulness (i couldn’t think of a word)… the fact is he is an inconsistent loser who has good games on occasion… too often he’s terrible… stats (even if you include them all and don’t leave out the bad games) don’t really matter because they don’t measure the intangibles… mcnabb will NEVER…. EVER…EVER…lead the team to greatness!!!!… close maybe…. but never all the way when it matters.
Jesus Goddamn Christ.
This is the stupidest thing I’ve ever read on this board. And bear in mind, I read all the pro-wildcat nonsense. Charles Johnson, James Trash, Todd Stinkston, Na Brown (Reggie’s lesser talented—if you can believe it) doppleganger, Tony Stewart, shall I go on? An inconsistent loser? Who’s your wet dream? Flaccid arm Kolb? That shady-visored moron from Virginia Tech? Give me a break.
"Right now Winston Justice is the guy...until that person gets back out there"
Why is everyone overlooking the Cowboys? Like it’s inconceivable they put up a fight? Dumb. They looked like shit against the Panthers but they’re playing 100x better than that, and besides… we lost to the Raiders. Looking forward to possibly being 3-0 in the Beast but damn people, let’s totally get way ahead of ourselves.
I am the people's troll :3™
the shitty thing about the Cowboys is they haven’t played well all the time but they’ve found a way to win and that makes them scary IMO. I think we have the better team but they are good they’ve lost two close games I’m not overlooking them.
But to be honest fans can overlook opponents all they want we aren’t playing the game it’s what the players do that matters.

I couldn't agree more about Jordan
even though his coverage skills are suspect I think hes a good player.
RIP Jim Johnson. You will truly be missed.
