When Bradley Comes Back...
Let's face it: We all miss this guy

But now, with Will Witherspoon stepping up as an Eagle MLB, my question unto you is: What are we gonna do when Big Stew is back? Witherspoon is a fine LB, has the ability to play MLB, WLB, and SLB, but is most suited as a WILL. Well, if Stew comes back at full health, what is the plan gonna be? The fact is that our best LBs are Stew, 'Spoon, and Akeem. But, who plays inside? Stew was originally drafted to play Strongside, so do we move him back there? Do we even keep 'Spoon? His contract is HUGE.
The way I see it, next year's LBs (if we don't get any big time free agents) will be
WLB: Akeem
MLB: Stew
SLB: 'Spoon
but, because of the flexability of these guys, we could see:
WLB: Akeem
MLB: 'Spoon
SLB: Stew
or, do we resign Gocong? Do we still have faith in Gocong?
WLB: 'Spoon
MLB: Stew
SLB: Gocong?
MAYBE SOME 3-4 LOOKS???
DE: Laws (a 3-4 DE in college)
NT: Bunkley
DE: Abiamiri
Weakside OLB: Trent Cole
Weakside ILB: 'Spoon
Sam ILB: Stew
Sam OLB: Gocong / Clemmons
or maybe a heavy package
DE: Bunkley
NT: Dixon
DE: Patterson
WOLB: Cole
WILB: Spoon
SILB: Stew
SOLB: Gocong
or maybe a speed package:
DE: Howard
NT: Bunkley
DE: Abiamiri
WOLB: Cole
WILB: Spoon
SILB: Stew
SOLB: Clemmons / Babin
I'm diggin this flexability. And this is if we don't draft or sign a big-time weakside or strongside 'backer (which we probably will)

When is Gocong’s contract up?

I believe the UFA’s are…
- Jason Avant
- Winston Justice
- Max Jean-Gilles
- Nick Cole
- Omar Gaither
- Chris Gocong
- Tracy White
Sav Rocca and Akeem Jordan are RFA’s.
Not a lot to worry about this offseason.

Next year is scary as hell though...
UFA’s include…
- Donovan McNabb
- Brian Westbrook
- Kevin Kolb
- Quintin Mikell
- Brent Celek (actually, he might be a RFA)
- Victor Abiamiri
- Stew Bradley
- David Akers

WOW
That is very scary. These next two years are so big. McNabb’s emphasis on “these next two years” when he restructured his contract makes me think that it’s now or never for him (and Westbrook).

Agreed...
Technically, all 3 of those OL are backups, but imagine if we didn’t have them right now. Personally, I’d like to see all 3 back. You can never have enough OL depth – Just have to hope they don’t want unreasonable money. If I’m choosing 2 to keep, I’m keeping Cole and Justice (sorry, JIBTA… I know you love Max).

Unless Justice starts to do a lot worse
I say we have to resign him, Shawn Andrews is now the big question mark so you really need to have a backup for him that you are confident in.
also, you have to keep at least one of those guards and probably draft a left tackle project in the late rounds.

I’m going to pretend that that guy who used to wear #73 isn’t even on the team until I see him suit up and play a full game.
When making roster decisions I think AR & Co. have no choice but to do the same. If Winston has a good year, you re-sign him with no question. But I need to see him continue playing well before I consider it.

I'd say
on justice, it all depends in how much faith they still have in Shawn Andrews. If they are still as confident as I think they are, then justice is gonna hit the market and make good money, while we give another shot to the “Great Wall of Andrews” experiment.
Nick Cole would be nice to keep around, but I think someone will sign him for more money than us as a starter, which he will not ever be here (if everyone is 100% healthy).
Gaither is good as gone. As is Max Jean Gilles, who has played like crap.
Avant isn’t going anywhere. He and Jordan are getting extensions this year.

I would LOVE for us to run a 3-4 scheme!!!!
But me might not have the exact personell for it. Also, though he has only played in one REAL game so far, BABIN said that he’s happy to be in a 4-3 scheme cuz he said that it more fits his style and is more effective.
Not sayin we should “play to Babin style” but, we all saw how effective he is at the traditional DE position. The man’s a beast, and should be challenging V.Abiamiri. Victors a nice guy, but the guys seems like he’s made of GLASS.
But I would be really cool if we threw some 3-4 looks in there!
by Realtalk32 on Oct 28, 2009 11:32 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I dont see I would work...
Like, having a 4-3 base, then switch in the 3-4 a couple times a game.
We KINDA do that already…having Juqua, Clemons and sometimes Cole drop back in coverage every once in a while!!!
I believe that the 3-4 scheme is harder to gameplan against thus more difficult to BEAT!
We should most def. throw more 3-4 looks …..but of course Babin would not be in. It would be more Clemons

as it is
McDermot has shown a lot of cool looking fronts. A bunch of 5 man lines. A few 6 man lines. Last night we saw a weird goalline formation with 3-6 formation (3 down linemen and 6 linebackers, 2 corners). 3-4 is just another way of messing with offenses. We are a 4-3 team, no doubt, but we could pull off a few exotic looks a game. especially on unsure running/passing downs like 2nd and long (6 or more). then we can go with our whacky ass 3rd down stuff.

Probably the single hardest player to find in the NFL that isn’t a great QB is a true nose tackle. And no, Dixon is not big enough or strong enough. 3-4 looks without a real NT to soak up the C and a G get shat on.

See thats the thing..
As I stated above, we don’t have the right personell to run a proper 3-4 scheme. I think we could still run an Eagles version. We kinda do it already..using Clemons and Parker as Jokers. But it would create more confusion and havoc if we did it more often and actually mixed in a 3-4 look sometimes.
We dont have the NT but our DE’s are more like 3-4 OLB’s. Undersized, fast and quick. We could do some MORE really cool things. If Mcdermott puts his mind to it, well…….

But...
I’m (provisionally) okay with what you’re saying if it’s an obvious passing situation. But, if you do it any time when the run is a possibility, you’re going to get rocked. Without a true nose tackle, all the offense has to do is check into a plain old up the gut run and the center is going to toss the fake NT out of the way. Then the RB gets to follow a guard for at least 5-6 yards.

JIBTA is right on this one. He and Ratliff would pan out to be similar players at the NT position because of their strength and athleticism. And as much as I hate to say it, Ratliff is good.
Plus, this wouldn’t be the primary defensive look anyway, so what does it matter if the personnel doesn’t fit perfectly to your liking?

Have to agree with JIBTA
In fact two years ago, against New England, Bunk played NT in our 3-3-5 look and we did pretty good against one of the best offenses in NFL history. People that talk about weight are crazy. Ask DeSean, it doesn’t matter how small you are if you have talent.
by Makokchina on Oct 29, 2009 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It doesn’t work like that you can’t just say “oh fantastic!” we got 4 great linebackers lets switch over to 3-4 so we can play them all. You need to pick up specific personnel with specific qualities different than the ones required in a 4-3. Kansas City is trying to switch to a 3-4 defense and tried moving players who were better in 4-3 to play new spots and it’s not working out too well. You need big D-linemen to generate pressure and take up blockers. Big, fast outside linebackers to play as edge-rushers, and be able to cover. It really requires a major overhaul of personnel to make the switch. I hope we never switch to a 3-4 defense I love the 4-3 it makes the middle linebacker like the quarterback of the defense, I guess thats why I like it so much it gives me a clear idea of who’s calling the shots.

I’m not saying we should be a full time 3-4 team, but we do have the players that could play in a make shift version of the 3-4. I’m not big on taking Patterson out of the game, but if we’re gonna spell him we could always try it. Hell, it wouldn’t be the worst experiment that went goes wrong.(Vick, Tony Hunt to FB, Jeremy Bloom, Dan klecko)

Personally I hate the 3-4 defense I like the scheme we run now, I would probably be upset if we ever changed that. What’s the point of going to 3-4 at all if we don’t have the personnel to execute it effectively, our defense is consistently top 5 material and dominant every year there’s no reason to change that, just let the players grow in the scheme we run.

Free agent acquisitions
They should get Aaron Kampman and Derrick Johnson. One will be cheap, one will not. Both are misfits in their current 3-4 defenses and free agents at the end of this year.
Imagine this front seven:
Cole, Patterson, Bunkley, Kampman
Johnson/Jordan, Bradley, Witherspoon.
Then, perhaps we can trade up and get Taylor Mays or Eric Berry and our defense will be stacked.
Won’t happen, but I think it’s possible.
