Eagles/Giants talk

So we have another fun game against the Giants upcoming which should tell us something of where we're headed as a team in 2009.  And once again, first place in the NFC East is at stake.  So how in the world do the Eagles pull this one out?   First off, throw everything these teams have done to date out the window.  Its completely meaningless really, because these guys play to the wire every time they meet, regardless of where the game is played.  The Eagles have reason to be optimistic, and also reason for concern.  Heres why.

Even though the Giants young receivers have played well, they still haven't completely filled the void of Plax.  He just used to kill the Eagles secondary with his size.  I'm expecting Samuel, Brown, and Mikell to have the edge here over Smith and Manningham.  Also, Kevin Boss has been quiet this year (only 14 catches in 7 games), so I'm also expecting Jordan and Witherspoon to win a majority of those battles.  The Giants have a great one-two punch with Jacobs and Bradshaw, and while I always thought Jacobs was a bit overrated, the guys need to wrap up and tackle low (as LaRon Landry will tell you).  This should also be a great challenge for Sean McDermott, who is faced with trying to get into the head of Manning with his blitz package.  This will go a long way in determining the outcome.

Now offensively, I think most of Eagles nation is concerned with our offensive line playing against one of the game's most formidable front sevens.  Peters and Justice will need an excellent effort against Osi and Tuck if they hope to keep Donovan on his feet and give us a chance to expose a struggling secondary.  The last two outings haven't been good for the men up front, so if there is ever a game to bounce back, here it is.  The Giants defense has shown you can run against them, so we'll see how long Andy and Marty stick with the run.

Overall, this will be an enormous challenge for both sides, with the victor earning first place in the division (for this week anyway).  I'm looking forward to what is always one of the league's classic battles.

Looking forward to this one

Assuming the Birds D shows up, I think this game is going to be low-scoring and dominated by the defenses.

Eli has had trouble lately getting his rhythm down and feeling confident when he’s trying to figure out complex defensive fronts pre-snap. Nobody does those better than the Birds. I think our DBs will show up to play against the Giants, and the Eagles have looked pretty good stopping the run so far this season.

Basically, I think the threat from the Giants is if they get their running game going. They are mad after two losses and hate us anyway. If they establish the run, even Eli the Overrated can kill us with play-action. If we shut down the run, I think we can stifle the Giants’ offense.

However, talking about the Eagles’ offense, my confidence in our O-Line, (right now,) is near zero. I expect Justice to get run over constantly by Tuck and McNabb to be sprinting for his life all game. We will not be able to run the ball whatsoever. Not even a little bit. If McNabb has a good day and the line can give him more than three seconds to throw the ball, (big question marks, there,) I think Mac & Jack can destroy the Giants’ secondary. But, I don’t think McNabb will have a good day and I don’t think the line will stop the pass rush.

If our D shows up both against the run and with intelligent blitzing, I predict this to be a long game filled with three-and-outs, with the margin of victory 7 points or less.

And as much as I hate to say this, I’m calling it Eagles 10, Giants 14. Sorry, guys.

The Saints blew up the Giants on the scoreboard

And arizona scored 3 times plus a FG. The Giants defense can be scored on, especially if we get into a rhythm.

The Giants offense has looked consistent, though they’ve come up short a couple times.

I think the game goes to the D Line that is best able to get into the head of the opposing QB.

Our recent OLine performance has me worried concerning that previous statement…but the thing about the Eagles is they can beat ANY team any given week (we can also lose to any team any given week)…

I’m too nervous to call it. We obviously have the players to win, but the Giants will be hard pressed to lose 3 in a row.

What the eagles have to do in my opinion y just max protect the hell out of that pass rush. Keep Celek Westy (hopefully) and/or weaver in to block and send 2 man routes with desean and Maclin. If Mcnabb gets enough time our WR’s will beat their DB’s

by McMuffin on Oct 28, 2009 1:36 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

That's a thought, but...

I like your thinking. I think finding a way to negate the Giants pass rush is the only way the Birds have a realistic chance at scoring consistently. However, if we lean too hard on the Max Protect, they’re going to notice and send both safeties to bracket Maclin and Jackson.

that's when we start

sending the WRs to one side, then having Westy, Weaver or Celek “leak out” late.

RIP Jim Johnson. You will truly be missed.

The Eagles D is riding high right now, we filled a major role with Witherspoon. The Offense needs to stay explosive. I am not a huge fan of the Wild Eagle, but we slip Vick in for a couple plays with McNabb lined up in the backfield to perform a double reverse atleast once with DJ getting the ball that should keep the Giants D honest. Vick is still learning the book but he can give McNabb a break. I am praying for Westbrooks speedy return but at the same time I would like to see if Shady can tear up the Giants D.

I don't wanna see if Shady can tear up their D

I’d rather have Westy who I KNOW can tear up their D…I might be forced to see what Shady can do, but it’s certainly not what I want

Agreed.

Westy must be back to kill the Giants again.

Andy Reid has to live with Sunday's reality: He was out coached by Tom Cable. (John Clayton)

Westbrook

I am almost sure will not be playing. The things Reid is saying- game-time decision, still hopeful, etc.- are always said about Westbrook and he never plays. I’m sure Reid knows he’s not going to play, but he doesn’t want to make things easier for Tom Coughlin and Bill Sheridan this week. I’m pretty sure that’s why they picked up PJ Hill.

I think the problem with the wildcat is...

That they know vick is either going to run the ball or hand it off. If they let him throw a few then I think it would work out a lot better. Bc Vick style isnt suited to the “wildcat” he has thrived from dropping back checking his first two reads and if they’re not there take off. And that’s how they should run the wildcat.

excellent analysis, it's gut check time for both squads

its one of those games thats gonna come down to who wants it more.

Also, Kevin Boss has been quiet this year (only 14 catches in 7 games), so I’m also expecting Jordan and Witherspoon to win a majority of those battles.

Of course, Fred Davis had 10 catches in his career before MNF. He had 8 catches in that game…

Not say the opponent’s TE is quiet or expected to be shut down.

RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

I'm fine with the Fred Davis-esque plays

That was Campbell’s outlet receiver. If he’s getting a lot of touches, that means the defense is getting plenty of pressure on the quarterback.

It’s the times when the tight end is 20 yards down the field and wide open that we all have the issues with.

I’m really concerned about the O-line being able to handle the Giants D-line, which is totally stacked with pro-bowlers and veterans, when they are struggling against the raiders

by fhqwagads on Oct 28, 2009 7:50 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

On the flipside

The Giants line has been very underwhelming, particularly at Tackle. If you can stop the push up the middle, the Giants pass rush has been non-existent this year.

by brisulph on Oct 28, 2009 8:28 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That IS the flip side

and their secondary is weak… BUT… At this point we can’t over look anything.

About Dunlap

So the question I have about him, (and I’m not trying to be bitchy,) is what is the point of him supposed to be? Can somebody who knows more about O-Linemen than I do tell me what gets the Eagles excited about King Dunlap? It is the height? What’s the company explanation for why he’s on the team? I suffer, here, from a lack of specific knowledge.

by DSmith215 on Oct 28, 2009 6:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

His sheer size and athletic ability. He moves well, he has quick feet. I guess he’s supposed to be able to match up well against speedy pass rushers. I still have some hope for him…and the only reason I do is Justice’s performance this year. He pulled it around after some terrible playing time.

Antonio Pierce

On offense we really need to find whoever Antonio Pierce is covering and get him the ball. He is slow and garbage just like trotter but they continue to play him. I really wish we had westy, but Celek or mccoy will just have to burn him.

Also the weather is looking crappy for Sunday, which is good for us because everyone knows the best defense against Eli is Wind.

The wind gets that weak arm of his every time!

I think our defense can shut down eli and create turnovers. but that monstrous giants d-line against our struggling o-line, that is going to be frightening.

While most ppl think its Mainly coming down to Defense...

I think that the Offense will be the X-factor. It’ll be a defensive battle and an Offensive War! If our Defense continues to improve and get even more hungrier, I believe they can hold the Gmen in check. Meaning, not gettin outta hand. Now after the defensive stops, the pressure will be on DMAC our Offense. If our offense can’t sustain a drive or get into the redzone and just rely on Akers field goals…..we’re gonna be in trouble. Our defense can try to keep holdin, but they’ll eventually tire down if we keep goin 3 & out, 3 &out, 3 & kick a field goal. Our offense will be the key. They need to hold the pressure up front, get a push and DMAC NEEDS to step-up NOW!

Its a Team thing but...

Basically, I don’t want it to be a game where…our defense is giving it there all and tryna play lights out while our offense is just kicking field goals. Points are points but u can’t let ur defense hang out to dry like that. Especially against the Girlie Men..oh I mean the Gmen. Did I say Girlie! So I did..I got it right the first time!!! haha. Anyway point is, our O is gonna have to score TD’s not just field goals. !

Im hopin.....................

Big Red has sumtin up his sleeve. We really havent seen much of conVICK yet this year and when we hav the stuff has been pretty basic. H e finally had a good play pickin up the first down (which were rare that night) against the skins. I hope Andy has sum stuff planned for him that we havent seen just 2 confuse and throw off the gints. I kno there gonna prepare for him but if we can catch them off guard it will be huge.

by goldenbird09 on Oct 28, 2009 6:13 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

also...........

i mean u ever notice with our wildcat its just a direct snap and a run up the middle to where as the dolphins wildcat is freakin crazy. They do reverses , double reverses, fakes, and throw out of the wildcat. When the fuk are we gonna get creative with this thing, thats wat its for right ????

Ronnie Brown even Threw outta the Wildcat..

That part really caught me off guard. The fact that he threw the ball and is wasnt no 5 yard pass…it was a 21 yard stirke to Anthony Fasano against the Jets on Monday night. Even Ronnie brown is averaging at least 3 passing attempts. It keeps the Def. guessing. They can’t only play the run cuz Ronnie might be called to pass.

When Vick comes in..Reid just usually makes him hand it off or run option!!

The dudes a QB let him throw. It would force defenses to play honest against our Wildcat. I dont blame Vick. He’s running the play given to him! He cant do anything but try his best and execute the play. Teams know he’ll just run it and hand off, thus rendering Vick!! Let the man throw

exactly..................

when we got Vick i thought thats how he would be used, imagine him running to the outside wit the option to pass, i think opposing defenses would be swissed up.
Or Vick takin the snap with mccoy and weaver flanking him with the option to pitch to them. I dont get why all the wildcat plays we do are so freakin predictable.

or will we see him soon?

Brent Celek is the man

How the Eagles will win the game

Offense
1. Give McNabb time by max protecting quite a bit. I hope to see a good deal of Alex Smith. Leaving him and Celek in will give Winston Justice some help with Justin Tuck and make things easier for Lesean McCoy. I would like to see these guys leak late, just in case Maclin and Jackson can’t beat he coverage immediately.
2. McNabb needs to be on. I think we may get one or two chances to hit Maclin/Jackson deep. McNabb needs to hit them. We have forgiven him his occasional throws into the dirt. But he can’t overthrow these guys when they are open. One or two deep tosses will have Bill Sheridan moving the safeties back and think twice before blitzing.
3. Run the ball so the Giants respect it. Lesean McCoy should not take snaps in the Wildcat. If you want him to run, hand him the ball. We have a Wildcat qb; if you want to use Wildcat, put him in.
4. No turnovers. No 3 and outs. We are not going to drive the ball down the Giants’ throats every time. But a couple of positive plays every time will help us keep their defense on the field and help us win field position battle.

Defense
1. Blitz, baby, blitz. Although I liked Jason Babin last game, I think we can all agree that we are not going to great production from left end. Cole should be good, but I would like to see us put the pressure on Eli. McDermott, show us what you learned. If Manning has time, he will pick us apart by going to Kevin Boss and the slot receiver (whoever it may be) all day.
2. Stuff the box. We have to have confidence in our corners. If the Giants come up out with 2 receivers, I’d like to see the Eagles put Sean Jones in and 8 guys in the box. If Asante Samuel and Sheldon Brown cannot cover the Giants’ receivers one-on-one I will be disappointed in them. They are elite players and should be able to do this.
3. Be opportunistic. We have to force turnovers when we get the chance.

I don’t make predictions. If the Eagles do everything I say, they should win. If McNabb doesn’t have time, and if Eli does, the Eagles will be in big trouble. We also have to remember that the Giants will really want this because they can’t afford to lose 3 in a row.
