A distinction
We need to make a distinction. Just because you criticize McNabb, it does not mean you are an idiot. He is not a perfect player, and there are some legitimate criticisms one can make of him. He can miss low on his passes, he is not enough of a risk-taker, and he can be streaky.
That said, he is still a great quarterback who has led us to 5 NFC Championships and a Super Bowl. Of active qb's he has the third-best winning percentage (behind Tom Brady and Peyton Manning) and he's done it with very little offensive help. He has the second-lowest interception percentage in history, and one of only 3 players to ever throw for more than 30 touchdowns and less than 10 interceptions (again, in the company of Brady and Manning) in history. No quarterback is perfect. Peyton Manning has played some bad games. Do Colts fans start calling him a no-talent bum and ask that he be traded to a rival or Siberia? Do they call him useless? Tom Brady started off this season poorly against the Jets. Was he ripped by Pats fans? Did they wish they had Matt Cassel instead?
McNabb has weaknesses. But if you're going to criticize him, you have to acknowledge his strengths as well. He throws a great deep ball. That pushes the safeties back and opens things up for Avant and Celek. When he's on, this offense is close to unstoppable. He doesn't make many turnovers. And he can buy time for his receivers. His play action fake is one of the best in the league, and has set up a ton of big plays for us.
McNabb made some bad throws and mostly checked down last game. But he was also playing it safe in the second half. If he does not play better next game, a qb change may be called for. But you don't bench a quarterback based on one poor performance and one mediocre performance, especially when he was sacked 9 times total.
I want the Eagles to win. Kolb showed promise. But we will not go to the playoffs (this year) with him. If he gives us the best chance to win, that will mean McNabb has regressed severely.
To Joe_D and toofunny77: you should go by some silver and blue gear. If you really think McNabb has been useless to the Eagles, yet claim to be old, the only logical conclusion is that you have Alzheimer's because you must have forgotten Rodney Peete and Doug Pederson. McNabb makes a ton of plays and has been the best qb in our division for the last decade. If you don't think this you are either not a real Eagles fan, uninformed, or (my personal opinion) both.

Gotta Agree
He has his off days, for sure, and I hate to see those burried balls, too, but we are very lucky to have him, as we are lucky to have Andy Reid.
One thing I didn’t see you mention Tanman, is how hard it is for defenders to bring McNabb down when they get to him, how evasive he is when he sees the rush coming, and the uncanny way that he can suddenly take a step forward or back at the very last moment when a blindside rusher, someone who he really shouldn’t even see, is headed right for him.
I can understand fans frustrations when he isn’t playing well but it seems childish to me that they get all over him. Maybe I’m not ‘competitive’ or ‘driven’ enough, but I’d rather support my team without all the second guessing and stand by McNabb, too.

This is a good point because there does seem to be that school of thought out there – that if you criticize him you are irrational and hard to please.
To me the difference is when you say you’d rather play Kolb. That to me is irrational. To say McNabb has flaws is to speak fact

I think my problem is when they say that McNabb is mediocre, was never good, never did anything, blah blah. Thats just ignorant.

It's absolutely ignorant
He’s been awesome!!!
There are things to love…namely his ability to change the tide of a game AT ANY MOMENT (4th and 26…14 second scramble against Dallas)
But there are concerns…namely his inconsistency and inaccuracy.
I’ll never talk down the good that he has done…but I’m free to wonder if we need something more consistent moving forward. (and I can’t say Kolb is that guy…he’s had 2 starts…I just get the feeling that something has to get this offense to start moving consistently)
I think I’d even take a consistent offense that moves the ball over one that goes 3 and out 4 times in a row followed by a 60 yard bomb for a TD. The big play is nice when it happens, but I don’t trust it…and I felt like against Oakland we just kept trying for it and it never came.

yes he’s inconsistent, inaccurate at times, whatever the case may be, but IMHO he is our best option right now and we all need to support him.

I haven't given up on him yet either
I’m getting there…I’m asking questions…I’m wondering out loud…
But he’s still my QB

I donno...

I’ll probably be called an idiot, but oh well. McNabb has been excellent, and is truly a great quarterback. However, so far this year he has not been his old self. There are flashes of it, but the offense is wildly inconsistent and the only times we seem to score are on big plays. Even looking into last year, he went through a HUGE slump and didn’t come back from it until he got benched. Kolb came in and ran a consistent offense that put up points. He’s not as talented as McNabb, but that doesn’t mean he can’t be as successful. If McNabb is going to lay multiple eggs a year (aka, the three game stretch last year and the Raiders game, and kinda this past game), the eagles won’t be able to move the ball, and won’t score. As a result, we’ll need to rely on miracles (oakland beating tampa) to get to the playoffs.
I love McNabb, and I understand a bad game here or there, but he’s definitely made a habit of them the past couple of years.

True but
Kolb has still not proven himself against legitimate competition.
The Saints game is not evidence of Kolb’s ability to lead us to a championship. He threw for over 300 yards, but most of it was in crunch time. He was passable in the first half, but played poorly in the third quarter, giving up a pick six, and missing westbrook to force a three-and-out deep in our own territory that led to another Saints touchdown. People praise his stats in that game, but most of it was in garbage time. He wasn’t bad, but he didn’t show that he could lead us to the Super Bowl.
Against the Chiefs, he was placed in an optimal situation. There was no pass rush, and the Chiefs defense is really bad.
The last good team he faced (and to be fair, Baltimore’s defense was awesome last year) owned him.
That said, things might get bad enough with McNabb that Kolb may be the best option. If and when that happens, I think it will be a sign that we are aiming for a title in 2011. Kolb has improved, but he is not going to outclass Eli Manning, Brett Favre, Drew Brees, or Kurt Warner (YET, I certainly think he has the potential to do very good things).
To sum up, if the Eagles win the Super Bowl this year, it will be with McNabb returning to his form from the second half of last year.

agreed
Mcnabbs the man and we need him in there to get the ring.
one thing. Peyton ’06 and Brady ’07, have also thrown for 30 and less then 10, but mcnabb did it first.
"Eagles fans are a passionate group who love their team," said McNabb, "if not the actual players. It's not like winning a Super Bowl before the first month of the season is the hardest thing they've ever asked of me. That'd be all those times they asked me to go kill myself."

Rec'd
great post and the only time I dread coming on BGN, is when McNabb has a subpar game. Every player is entitled to a bad game, and the way some people shit on McNabb makes me sick to my stomach. With names in our past like Rodney Peete and Doug Peterson (Brad Goebel, Bobby Hoying, Jeff Kemp, Mike McMahon, the brothers Detmer, Ken O’Brien, Bubby Brister, etc) some of you fans don’t understand how good we have it. We have a guy that has taken us to 5 NFC Championships, many times (as recently as last year) McNabb literally carried us to NFC Championship game. He is approaching 100 career wins for us . . . last night he had Jon Gruden and Ron Jaws praising him as one of the best players in the league with many years left in him.
If I could change one thing about our fanbase, it would be our inconsistent treatment of McNabb. There are fans there that feel truly thankful to have him as our team leader.

I think our opinion of McNabb is as inconsistent
as his game.
He’s done great things…and his big play ability can change the tide of the game at any moment. But if we can’t move the ball consistently, we end up with a game like Oakland where we keep trying for the big play and it never comes.

Against Washington
The big play worked..but if it hadn’t we were screwed!
We need a game plan that doesn’t rely on the big play to win…

Don't worry...
Mcnabb and the Eagles have a knack for playing better the second half. Let’s hope it starts from next week.

The DEFINITELY DO!!!
and I’m really holding out hope for it too. The early season is iffy…followed by a middle slump…then an EXPLOSION of awesome to end the season and get us into the playoffs.
I’m hoping this is the ‘slump’ part and that we’ll climb out and hit stride soon!!!
