Five predictions for the Giants

Coming off a victory in DC, the Eagles have a chance to take control of the NFC East for the first time this season if they beat the Giants next Sunday. The Giants have now lost two in a row and are showing kinks in their armor. Don't make the mistake of believing they're in a position of weakness.

Tom Coughlin is a smart coach, and he doesn't want to lose 3 in a row, especially against a division opponent. The Giants are going to be fired up, and they're going to be hungry. I have a feeling the two losses will serve as a strong motivating factor for the Giants.

What do I expect to see? It's going to be a very physical, defensive game. The Giants are 1st in yards allowed per game, and the Eagles are in the top 5.

1. DeSean Jackson will be a non-factor. The Giants are well-coached and don't give up big plays. I think their number one priority is ensuring DeSean Jackson does not get open for the big play down field. Of course, it only takes one misstep by a defender for DeSean to get wide open, and if he does, that could prove to be the difference in the game. All this isn't necessarily a bad thing. With DeSean Jackson receiving so much attention from the defense, Brent Celek will have another big game, and LeSean McCoy and Leonard Weaver will more involved than they were in previous contests.

2. Eli Manning will be harassed. Sean McDermott learned the art of the blitz from the late, great Jim Johnson, and he sure loves to bring the pressure. The Giants have a very good offensive line. As the game goes on, however, I expect the Eagles defensive line rotation to wear down the Giants linemen. I don't think Eli has the resiliency to keep getting up and lead his team downfield. I think he will show frustration and have that confused look he always seems to have on his face.

3. The Eagles are going to show us something we haven't seen before on offense. So far this season, the Eagles have displayed a pretty vanilla playbook. Sure, they show the Wildcat formation quite a bit, but they haven't been using any exotic plays. I think Andy Reid has been saving and preparing for the Giants, the toughest and most important game so far this year. I think we see 2 "gimmick" plays. If the Eagles do get a big play off, it comes from a play we haven't seen before.

4. The Eagles will lean more on their running game. If Brian Westbrook can't go, look for LeSean McCoy to get around 20 carries and 5 or so by Leonard Weaver. For the Eagles to win, they're going to have to sustain drives with a running game and short passes. Brent Celek will be the favorite receiving targets this weekend. Donovan McNabb ends up spreading the ball pretty evenly amongst everyone that's not Celek.

5. The game will come down to one big turnover that leads to a score. Hopefully, that turnover goes to the Eagles. I think an Eli Manning sack and fumble in Giants territory turns into a TD.

The Eagles won't be able to get by with a win if they continue playing offense the way they have the last two weeks. I think it's going to be a nail-biter, and I have the Eagles coming out on top, 20-16. What's your thoughts?

cant wait for this game.

I believe maclin will have a nice game because jackson will be seeing heavy coverage.
If we don’t pressure manning, we will lose. And i believe we will be in his face all game.
If BWest cant go, I see McCoy struggling to get anything going against this D at first and I hope that doesn’t sway Andy away from the run too much.
Honestly, as good as the Giants running backs are, I see the Eagles defense shutting them down for the most part.
This will be a low scoring game but I think the Eagles can pull it out if they pressure Eli and dont stray from the run if they struggle.

I’m not sure I buy the “Eagles have been saving up the REALLY GOOD EXTRA SPECIAL playcalling for the Giants game” line of thought.

We have two losses. When those games were getting out of hand, if there was a “DO NOT OPEN UNTIL GIANTS” box, wouldn’t they have, I don’t know, pulled a few tricks out to gut out the win?

However! I agree with your assessment of the game. Well done.

Giants and Eagles games usually come down to a battle of errors. The team that makes the most errors generally loses. I know that sounds like a Madden-ism, but it’s true. We fight each other so hard in these games, it’s the team that is firing just slightly better on all cylinders that wins.

I believe

the team that stops the other team from scoring most will win.

I can't wait

the REAL test of this team. I want to see an offense come out ready to play (which in my mind is nothing more than not being in 3rd and long positions on your way to scoring drives)

and less pentalties that put us in 3rd and long… we had a lot of pentalties last night that caused us good positioning.

yeah, we've been penalized quite a bit all season

As is stands now

I can not see my team standing up to the Eagles (with or without Westbrook). I will hope they win, but for the first time in a while I am not very hopeful. Dysfunctional, out of sync, and poor planning/decisions seem to be rampant in the Giants game.

Both teams...

…have issues to iron out. What happens Sunday probably won’t have much to do with the end of the season. Still, I want the win.

Someone didn't watch the Saints-Giants game:
The Giants are well-coached and don’t give up big plays.

They may be well coached, but they definitely give up big plays. If their front four doesn’t get pressure their secondary is vulnerable. Very vulnerable. Brees had a huge day against them, but he didn’t even have to be particularly Brees-like (he was, but he didn’t need to be). There were open receivers all over the field. They may double Jackson to be sure to lock him down, but we very well may have some big plays open to us.

They give up 165 passing yards a game. They don’t give up big plays.

That's all their front four.

Seriously. Once the Saints had the defensive line contained the field was WIDE open. They aren’t a good D across the board. Their monstrous up front so most teams haven’t had the time to establish any passing attack. The Saints got that time and the Giants’ secondary looked like Swiss cheese once it was exposed. Big plays can definitely be had.

They’ve given up 3 passing plays of 40 yards or more (one each against the Saints and Cardinals, and one in garbage time against the Chiefs). I don’t know how to state this any clearer, but this is not a team that just willy-nilly gives up big plays.

All I know is what I remember from watching that game.

40+ yards is one thing, but 15+ is another. When Brees had time, their secondary couldn’t hang. Maybe they play deep enough to prevent the really big plays, but when 15 or 20 yard passes get strung together, that’s just as big.

The Giants' secondary

is banged up. Kenny Phillips, their free safety, is out for the year. Corey Webster has been recovering from injury. I think if anyone can make big plays against them, it’s D-Jax and Maclin.

by tanman5 on Oct 27, 2009 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I just hope we come out looking like we WANT to win this game.

Kenny Phillips being out is not good for the gints.
Neither team can survive another lackluster performance. It would be great to see both teams play a good clean game and, if we come out on top, then we will know that we have something.

Alright, so the Giants gave up some huge plays against us. DeSean Jackson got his big play, and it didn’t come down to one turnover. The Giants didn’t show up and I was wrong about half this crap.

I'd say you were wrong on Jackson

But everyone was wrong about Jackson since he declared for the draft.
234 you hit on and you get a partial on 5 with the Asante INT early. That kind of sealed the game. So 3.5 for 5. not bad.
