Rams Fans React to Witherspoon Loss
There's no better way to see what you got in a player, than by listening to the reaction of the team who lost them. I compiled comments from the members at Turf Show Times as they react to their loss of our newest addition. I don't know any of these guys, so I cannot vouch for how educated any of these opinions are. But here are some opinions:
Witherspoon is only 29, a team leader, and one of the few playmakers we have on our young D…this move makes no sense to me, esp. considering we’ve already picked up Amendola and Ruvell Martin at WR. I don’t get it
He was moved back to the weak side this year (what is supposed to be his best position) and I just felt he never met my expectations. Were they unreasonable? Maybe, but I’ve gone through games watching and never really seen him do much. He’s tough though and is a true professional. He’ll fit in well.
I’m not that surprised. A little, but not shocked. Nothing says “rebuilding” like trading away your best LB.
Will Witherspoon actually added something to this team and him and Laurinaitis made a pretty good Linebacker core. I don’t think we should have traded him just to get a WR and younger players.
liked him as player, but he’s only a solid not spectacular player.
He was supposed to be really great when he got back to OLB. Instead I’ve seen him miss as many tackles as he’s made, and I haven’t seen him do much in covering backs coming out of the backfield on pass plays.
Was he that BIG a game changer??? I honestly can’t think of anything on the highlight reel or really anything substantial that says to me “he’s our leader and a game changer”
Seeing this hurts. Sometimes I feel like we’re approaching mediocrity, then we’re hit with some big loss.
He’s a decent starting LB. Natural Will but played out of position in the Mike for most of the last few years. He’s not bad at all, but not going to Hawaii either. As far as being a playmaker, he has Zero INT’s and Zero Sacks and Zero FR’s this year. So….not sure what the definition of playmaker is but to me it’s not simply tackling… he’s 2nd on the team in tackles.
Will is getting older and wasn’t making a lot of plays but still he is a proven veteran that we know can play. I think the rams front office just wanted some picks and where interested in this young receiver and the deadline was coming too fast and they just panicd and hit the button. As of right now i do not like this decision unless we find a will witherspoon with this 5th round pick or this guy turns out to be jerry rice.
Witherspoon DOES IT ALL. One of our only playmakers.

Hmm
Kinda split. The main thing I’m getting is the fact that, although he may not be a huge playmaker, he’s a solid LB that gets the job done.

Yeah,
That’s what I got too.
Although I hate the idea of judging a guy’s “playmaking” ability on the highlight reel.
It’s almost like us saying that Bunkley isn’t a playmaker. He has no sacks, no interceptions, and no sacks this year. In fact, he only has 9 solo tackles…And I still think he is one of the best in the league.

How many sacks does he have?
About 10 minutes ago, I was pondering my own existence. Then I decided that it didn't matter.

Bunkley has 5 in his career, and 0 so far this year.
Witherspoon has 19 in his career and 0 so far this year. His best year ‘statistically’ was ’07 when he had 110 tackles, 7 sacks, and 2 forced fumbles.

Some mixed reactions there...
All I know is he HAS to be better than our current linebackers. You can’t ask for more than that with what we gave up.
Andy Reid needs to go. 36-32-1 (2005-present) Oakland game is unacceptable.

Another post from an analyst at SI’s Scout Notebook I read was that he overcompensates for lack of talent around him and is forced to do too much. He will probably thrive in an environment where there is a lot more talent than the Rams. If I were him I’d be JUICED to come into a winning team with an opportunity to start.

I agree
I think Gibson wouldve been a huge playmaker in years to come. He was amazing in the preseason and was one of the biggest highlights. I will admit we needed major help at linebacker though.

He didn't have any game
with more than 4 catches, and never even hit 50 yards. He had one TD in 4 preseason games. While I also was high on the kid…it’s hard to forecast that he was going to be a huge playmaker.

BD… I’ve been trying to figure this out but have no idea where to look. Thought maybe you’d know the answer.
It’s totally off-topic and a sore subject… but how many drops did the Eagles’ receivers have on Sunday?

Also do you know how many times McNabb was hit and/or hurried?
Quick explanation: A loser Cowboys fan and I got into a debate about the Raiders game. He was trying to blame the loss completely on McNabb saying that he did nothing to win the game. I agreed, but said he also didn’t do anything to lose the game and there were many, many, many other factors why they lost. I don’t know if I’m just being a homer, delusional Eagle’s fan that’s humming on McNabb’s nuts or if I am right in defending McNabb.
If anybody knows the answers to those questions, please let me know. I’d appreciate it.

And sorry for changing the subject.
I love this move by the Eagles. I think Witherspoon will help us out greatly. I love Trotter, but he just can’t cover a single sole. Witherspoon looks like a solid player that has started for years and years. Hopefully he brings in an attitude and play-making ability that we need to get the defense back on track.

“Drops” is a hard stat to find, but I do remember late in the game they put a graphic up on the screen late in the game that I think said the Eagles had 8 of them, which is WAAAAY too many.
Same thing with “hits” and “hurries” – Difficult to find, but he had NO time to throw. That said, I felt he did have a horrible game – He was missing guys by a mile.
That game was all about the line of scrimmage – They dominated us on both sides, but especially when we were on offense. We have a lot of depth at OL, but when you have 4 guys on the OL playing that were backups in camp, I don’t care how much depth you have – You’re going to be in big trouble.

Agreed 10x over
I think Castillo gets so much undeserved credit its laughable. This line hasn’t been able to effectively run block in years. YEARS. All they do know is how to back into pass pro 99 times per game. If he’s really as good a a coach as people seem to think, he should be able to coach up some of these “diamonds in the rough” (Gibson, Dunlap, and, for the love of God, MJG). Instead, they all appear to be as rough as they were at the start.
He may not be a miracle worker, but having a line competently run block and pick up blitzes is not exactly water-into-wine stuff.

Several of the lineman
have commented over the years that it takes some time to get into a lane-clearing ‘groove’. Similar to McNabb’s need to warm up before he’s in sync with his guys.
WIth no commitment to the run, these guys can’t get any momentum.

BTW
Any thoughts on who you would rather have at QB. Romo or McNabb?
I got into this absolutely ludicrous debate with two cowboys fans in my fantasy league on who is the better QB.
Their only argument was Romo has had better passer ratings over the past 3 years and better yards than McNabb. I also fell to the floor and started laughing as I rolled into the fetal position.

Trust me… went into all of that. December wins…December stats etc. etc.
I even compared the 2004 year to the 3 years of Romo. (They both had the same receiver to throw the ball to) and McNabb’s Passer Rating was above 100 and his numbers just dominated any numbers that Romo has ever put up.

And how people continue to overrate the QBs importance is still a logical outcome.
Don’t missunderstand me having a QB playing well in December and January helps, but having a team that isn’t looking for different ways to shoot at their own foots is much better… It’s puzzling for me that most of our team players have anything to stand on… The Kansas City game is a perfect example of what I’m talking about (missed blitz pickups, drops, some inaccuracy from Romo, coverage problems and a bit of missed tackles).
If your QB has an average of bellow average game, having a team that’s decided to play ball and well will help you into winning the game late in the year, McNabb has seen that, the Mannings, Roethlisberger, etc. Romo hasn’t.
BTW, I wouldn’t take Romo over McNabb, he’s still too inconsistent, but McNabb also has inconsistency problems, so I wouldn’t take him over Romo, to me they’re too close to tell.

McNabb by himself? Or with his team?
In the case of the Cowboys they’ve been playing awful as a team, Romo tends to play erratic football, the receivers don’t run their supposed routes or drop the ball, the OLine misses the blitz or just decide to take plays off, the front 7 or 6 and the safeties allow RBs to reach the 2nd level untouched, forget how to tackle or react awfully late and the CBs have coverage problems.
Your team has suffered from all those problems before, and at the same time, for example the Oakland and Bengals games in this past couple of years and the results are there for all to see.
Now, try to tell me that the same has happened for your team in the Playoffs and how McNabb carried the rest of his team by himself.

NFC championship game last year. Down by 3 TDs at the half and Mcnabb singlehandedly brought us back to take the lead. I thought i was witnessing a miracle. Sure, he couldn’t lead them to a game winning drive at the end but the way he lead us to take the lead was outstanding. If the defense held the Cards on their last drive, we would have witnessed a PA super bowl.
Come back to me when Romo does anything remotely close to that.

That’s it, meanwhile haters like to pin all the weight of the Cowboys poor play at the end of the year on the QB, but reality isn’t that simple.
But I guess that you can’t agree with the idea, Romo just sucks, right?

Romo doesn't suck
He’s a fine QB. People are right to pin the dropped snap to lose the playoffs all on him…other than that, it’s a team sport.
I don’t think he’s proven himself in clutch situations, but McNabb isn’t known for 4th Quarter comebacks either.
Player for Player, you have to take McNabb…he’s simply done more with less for longer.

Three straight games with a TD, last week was the first week he’s been 100% and he had five catches for 114 yards and a score. It won't go to a WR
Maclin had a great game. Austin Collie had a great game for Indy. Nicks has been consistent. Percy Harvin’s been playing well. Johnny Knox has been consistent. Crabtree might actually come up big for SF (he’s starting immediately). But none of these guys are playing head and shoulders above the rest.
No rookie running backs are standing out like Felix, Forte, and Slaton did last year.
But Sanchez will probably get it…he played 3 solid games…two fine games, and then this last implosion. The Jets will probably pull it together, and Sanchez will get it.

I think you should keep Nicks. Three TDs in three weeks is as consistent as it gets, and his injury was still lingering for those first two games. As I said this last game was really his first game at 100% and he showed up in a big way. I don’t know if he’s going to steal the #2 spot from Ham just yet, but even if he doesn’t, I don’t see his production slipping.
