Eagles Get LB Witherspoon (confirmed)

From Spuds . . .

After a schedule filled with various conversations with many teams, the Eagles landed a linebacker to help a group in immediate need, and one who has a working knowledge of the complicated scheme that Sean McDermott runs. The team acquired veteran Will Witherspoon from the Rams in exchange for rookie wide receiver Brandon Gibson and a fifth-round draft pick in 2010.

With Stewart Bradley out for the season because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament, the Eagles have had trouble replacing their best defensive player. Bradley's ability to play well on all three downs has been missed terribly, and the combination of Omar Gaither, Joe Mays and Jeremiah Trotter has been sometimes good, sometimes lacking.

In Witherspoon, the Eagles get a player in his eighth NFL season who has played both the weakside and the middle linebacker positions. Witherspoon was originally a third-round draft pick by Carolina in 2002, and then signed a monster free-agent deal with St. Louis in 2006. He led St. Louis in tackles in 2006 and 2007 and finished third on the team in tackles in 2008.

Through six games this season, Witherspoon is third on the team 36 tackles as a starter from his weakside linebacker position.

How he fits in here remains to be seen. Witherspoon doesn't have ideal size, at 6 feet 1, 239 pounds, to man the middle against the rugged running games the Eagles will face in the weeks ahead. Certainly, there is concern with Omar Gaither's foot sprain and how long that will keep him out of action. Witherspoon should help immediately in coverage because he can still run and he can go sideline to sideline. The Eagles' linebackers have had trouble all year in coverage, and Witherspoon, signed through the 2011 season, is an instant upgrade.

But how long will Gaither be out? Is his injury significant? Can Jeremiah Trotter ramp up his game and help the team against the run and not be a liability in the passing game?

Questions, questions. The Eagles really miss Bradley, as they knew they would. They need a collective effort to improve the defense, particularly as the schedule heats up beginning Monday night against Washington, the first of three straight NFC East games.

Witherspoon has game, whether he comes in as a WILL or as a MIKE linebacker. He is going to help this defense. Witherspoon has missed only two games in his entire career, and he is a smart veteran who should quickly pick up the defensive system.

Trading Gibson is tough, but the Eagles have a slew of receivers here and are going to develop DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin for years and years to come. Gibson played well in the preseason and earned a roster spot, but his chances of advancing in this rotation seemed slim unless another player in front of him was moved.

In the end, the rebuilding Rams wanted the younger Gibson over an older veteran. The Eagles are well-stocked in the draft for 2010, and they always find a way to acquire more picks between now and late April.

Looking for help at a position that has had some major talent taken away with injuries, the Eagles helped themselves at the trade deadline on Tuesday. How quickly Witherspoon can fit in and where he fits in is the key here. He can play. He helps. And the Eagles certainly need it after losing Bradley in the summer and Gaither for however long to a foot injury in Sunday's loss at Oakland.

I am okay with it . . .

Gibson was never going to rise above Maclin, DJax, and Avant. This makes it much easier to lock up Avant long term. No doubt Gibson was high potential . . . but we HAD to upgrade our LB situation.

READ!

I live in the Rams media market, so I know a lot about this guy. He doesn’t intimidate players like Ray Lewis, but he’s a solid all-around LB. He was one of the best defensive players the Rams had (although that’s not saying much), and he will really help anchor our linebackers. This is a trade that needed to happen.

Only question is: what will happen to our current LBs? Will Gocong lose his job? Will Trotter be cut?

"Backs in the 'I'...First and 10...McNabb, play action. Is back again. He is looking..he is going deep. He wants DeSean Jackson..who HAS IT!!! HE HAS IT!!! AND STEPPED INTO THE ENDZONE!! He took it away from the defender!! He took it away from Dominique Rogers-Cromarte, and ran into the endzone!!"

Gocong's Strong Side

And is playing solid. I don’t think his job is in jeopardy. Jordan has been serviceable on the weakside too. It’s really our Mike that’s been the biggest concern.

I figure he rotates Mike with Trotter until Gaither’s healthy, and then it depends on Trotter’s play. If Trotter’s solid against the run I think Gaither moves back to Will rotating with Jordan, otherwise Trot gets cut and Gaither rotates with Witherspoon at the Mike.

"What did it feel like? That collision, I didn't feel nothing, because he was pretty much defenseless. It was like running through a cardboard box. Seriously. Cardboard box."- Sheldon Brown on his pounding of Reggie Bush in the '06 Playoffs

Are you serious!?!

Gocong playing better than Jordan?
I dont think so buddy, gocong has been getting burned left and right, jordan leads our LB in interceptions and has been doing a hell of a job against the pass and run.
Did you not see gocong wif on Russel on sunday?

true true...............

damn gocong, it sucks because i has really high on him at a point in time. I thought hes suppose 2 be a pass rusher??? So why the fuk dont we just bring him in on certain downs and plays and let him rush the QB, because its horribly obvious that none of our LBs can cover worth a shit, ok i take that back Jordan is stepping up big time, im suped up with the Spoon trade, i dont think people realize how quick and atheltic he is since he was on such a shitty team, i am concerned that teams are gonna try to rush at him a lot tho.

WE DEF NEEDED 2 MAKE A PLAY FOR A LB...............

I am happy with Spoon as i was really hoping the birds were gonna sign him in 2006 . But i gots 2 wonder about his size. I mean is this guy gonna get steamrolled by the likes of Marion or Jacobs? It was definitely a good and much needed pickup i just hope Spoon doesnt turn out 2 be another Mark Simoneau.

i agree we needed to take charge at a LB

idk how i feel about this one tho. if we had gotten Johnson from KC or Merriman i would have been “happier”. not mad at the pickup, just pissed to see gibson go. i dont know that much about this guy to be honest
