The Trade Winds are Gusting

Tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. ET, the NFL will prohibit all league franchises from dealing any players or draft picks via trades. Because of this, basically all 32 teams are keeping an eye on the trade block, fidgeting with offers, and doing as much as they can to either strike a deal or tune up their roster in some way before the deadline halts all trading actions for the remainder of the regular season. Clubs like the Tennessee Titans and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who sit with a winless record, are usually looking to rid of salary-eating veteran players, while teams on the verge of success, such as the San Francisco 49ers (3-2) and the Miami Dolphins (2-3) are typically searching for experienced stars that can assist them in completing a magical season.

Star-divide

For the Eagles, they contain an already-potent roster filled with Pro-Bowl talent and explosiveness (with both young and veteran players). However, they have been awful inconsistent and will need precise execution and performances to succeed down the stretch of their remaining 2009 schedule. Members of their squad haven’t been thrown around heavily in trade rumors, with injured starting WR Kevin Curtis being the primary target in transaction talks. But with the coming deadline, we might a move or two made by the front office to improve the organization.

Because the Eagles haven’t been known as typical deadline traders, you may doubt their chances of completing a deal. But these are the same Birds that added athletic and controversial QB Michael Vick in the preseason, and the same ones that took a risk and brought back retired and former Philly MLB Jeremiah Trotter during their Bye Week via free agency. If they’ve already executed such roster changes, then can we really rule out a trade that would add to the team’s pool of talent? I think not.

As stated before, Kevin Curtis seems to be the most likely player that would be shipped if a trade were to happen, because of his age, contract status, and the rise of rookie receiver Jeremy Maclin. However, there are undoubtedly other players the Eagles would be willing to send in a package if they truly wished to make a trade. Perhaps such players included in this group of potential trade members would be OLB Chris Gocong, who has been perhaps the least productive of the LBs, or maybe one of the reserve Wide Receivers (such as Reggie Brown), who was mentioned in trade rumors prior to the start of the season.

Time will tell if the Eagles will indeed strike a deal and bring in additional pieces to the puzzle they hope becomes a Super Bowl contender, but in the meantime, take a look at a few of the players around the league that have been frequently listed as potential trade bait that will wind up on the Eagles, as well as some Philadelphia football members that have been listed as potential departures from the team:

Potential Trade Acquisitions/Future Eagles:

  • OLB Derrick Johnson: Johnson, a 5th-year Linebacker for the Chiefs, has been confirmed as a player Kansas City wishes to deal, as they believe they can receive decent value in exchange for him. As of this week, Johnson has tallied 357 tackles, 13 sacks, and 4 interceptions in his career, and has begun to be considered among the best of young defenders. He has the versatility to play the Middle Linebacker position, and would definitely provide the Eagles’ defense with a boost of ability to tackle and cover the passing game.
  • OLB Kirk Morrison: Morrison would join a familiar team if he were to be traded to the Eagles, as he just played them on Sunday. A veteran of the Raiders’ organization, the 5th-year LB has been one of the few consistent, solid parts to the Oakland defensive unit. He has led the team in tackles several times, and, as of this week, has a career total of 556 tackles, 3 sacks, and 7 interceptions, quite impressive for the amount of years he’s been in the league. Morrison hasn’t had significant experience at the MLB spot, but would still bring a load of defensive contributions to the Eagles.
  • DE Kyle Vanden Bosch: While the primary focus of potential Eagle trades has been on Linebackers, there was one DE mentioned in serious rumors, and that was Titans’ end Kyle Vanden Bosch. The 2-time Pro-Bowler has been in the NFL since 2001 (he spent 4 seasons with the 49ers to begin his career), and has been one of the most successful longtime forces on the Tennessee defense, that was once ranked as one of the best. He’s in his 9th season, but continues to display power; he is among the team leaders in terms of tackles recorded, and his career sack total stands at 39.5. Opposite the Eagles’ other star DE Trent Cole, Vanden Bosch would give the Eagles perhaps one of the best defensive lines in the NFL should he be acquired.

Potential Trade Departures:

  • WR Kevin Curtis: Curtis began his stint with the Eagles with great success, recording a memorable 1,000-yard receiving season in 2007. Since then, however, he has been bothered by injuries and inconsistency. His salary is also scheduled to increase in the coming years, probably to the dislike of the Eagles’ front office. It was announced previously that Curtis was to be placed on the trading block for teams to compete for his services, but thus far not many organizations have displayed signs of interest. Nevertheless, Curtis is a prime candidate to be shipped.
  • MLB Omar Gaither: One might not consider Gaither a potential trade victim, but based upon the possibilities of the Eagles adding another LB, it seems likely the 4th-year player would be dealt rather than another of the Linebackers on the roster (such as aged veteran Jeremiah Trotter, who was only recently signed, and OLB Akeem Jordan, whom the team is very confident about and connected to). A team in search of a young, yet knowledgeable defender might enjoy having Gaither on their squad as a situational coverage Linebacker, and there’s a chance one team will receive that if they execute a trade involving him tomorrow.
  • WR Reggie Brown: Brown was a topic of discussion in preseason trade talks, but never was moved due to a lack of interest by the prime trade contenders. Should he finally see his exit in Philadelphia, it will likely be as part of a package deal, but even so, it would mean his departure. The backup wideout was once a quality starter, but struggled with consistency and lost out on playing opportunities, which led to the limited role he holds in the offense now. The 5th-year passing target still has an upside and potential to be a starter again, and that is what makes him a possible member of a trade.

Again, only time will tell whether the Eagles decide to make a last-minute transaction, and for now, all we can do is speculate. Stay tuned for updates or new reports on possible trades.

Vanden Bosch is ridiculously overrated. Slightly above average at best. Pro Bowls don’t mean dick. How many did Roy Williams have?

I'm not a huge Vanden Bosch fan either

It’s easy to say this, but it seems like he benefited a ton from Haynesworth generating pressure up the middle.

If they really were looking for a spark at DE, the Birds might try activating Babin one of these weeks.

well Patterson and Bunkley crate alot of pressure up the middle

prolly as much as haynesworth does so maybe Bosch can benefit from that.

Ya think?

Curtis makes $1.9 mil this year, but is due $3.4 next season, $4 mil in ’11 and $6 mil in ’12.

There’s a chance he’ll play here in ‘10, but with DJax, Avant and Maclin all coming on, Curtis being hurt and him making more than all of them combined practically, I think he’s a goner.

I don't mean that as a jerk

I think we’d all be able to live with getting anything for Reggie Brown. He’s not involved in helping our team, regardless of whether or not you think he has NFL talent.

There might be a higher opinion around the league on a healthy Kevin Curtis … that’s what I was trying to get at. I’m pretty sure Brown has been shopped to date and there must not be any takers.

Its cool man. I was thinking about it from a perspective of which player will contribute to the team the least, thats why I said Brown. After seeing those contract numbers I think maybe we should trade Curtis.

Its not going to happen

As much as we all dream, Andy is going to disappoint us once again. Why? Because Andy seems to think that the only people on the field are the QB, offensive line, D-line, and CBs. He doesn’t put emphasis on the other positions. But Andy also covets his draft picks like Al Davis covets fast black people. We’ll get a great linebacker eventually. Probably in about 3-4 years. Just like what he did with the wide receiver group, wait a few years till he can’t take the bitching anymore and then do it. He likes em cheap and mediocre. If they know how to put on pads then as he always says “We think we got a great group.” But somehow we always come up short. I was saying we should have picked up Leroy Hill, Larry Foote, Piso Tinoisamoa (or something like that). I even made a post about ones we could draft or pick up by trade or free agency. But that was before I realized that Andy doesn’t address the problem till forever after it surfaces.

-1

-1 on the whole post. And we’ll get a great linebacker – back again – next year: Stew Bradley. Give AR more credit. He builds a great organization with trades, picks and coaching. He fixed some Offensive issues this year and some unforeseen issues popped up on D.

by IggleGreen on Oct 20, 2009 7:28 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm with Iggle here, we have a great linebacker in Philly.

Stewart Bradley. Maybe you’ve heard of him? Yea, he’s injured right now, but that doesn’t change the fact that he is an Eagle and was drafted by Reid. We will probably invest in another LB or two next year through the draft.

by NOLACuse on Oct 20, 2009 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I never said Bradley wasn't good

I was saying that the reason we get good players like him is because Andy happens to get a gem in the draft instead of trading for them when he needs them. We needed a receiver for awhile and it took him a few years and luckly DeSean and Jeremy happened to fall to us and have turned out pretty good. Bradley was the same, he fell to us, Reid put him in and hey, he turned out good. Instead of addressing the problem at hand, he decides to wait too long. When Bradley went down he should have known just as much as anyone else that there goes the LB core with him (even though Akeem has been sufficient), but he didn’t. Now we have problems there and now we are down to the last few hours and Reid cant do much.

by macjack09 on Oct 20, 2009 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree.

Like Sir Mix-a-Lot, who likes them “round and big,” Andy Reid prefers linebackers mediocre and cheap. It’s a good thing Reid isn’t a doctor given his “Andy doesn’t address the problem till forever after it surfaces.” His after the fact self-reflections and his inept personnel decisions continue to baffle.

Every coach misses things. You can take a list of all the preventative damage he’s done, and all the times he’s been burned, and I GUARAN-DAMN-TEE you the list of problems he has avoided by taking early action is way shorter. HINT: Look at the draft. People have been saying our window is closing for 5 years now. Yeah, right.

I doubt a trade will happen..

But I’d love to see Johnson or Morrison added to our linebacker corps, and get worked into Gocong’s spot and possibly even put Gocong back at DE, his original position. I’d like to see how that might work out.

by xEdgeCamx on Oct 19, 2009 11:21 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

…and possibly even put Gocong back at DE, his original position

.

+1

I always thought his skillset would be best utilized as a pass rushing end, but this is what the Eagles do. We draft a 240lb LB in 2008, and try to make him a 4-3 DE. Gocong was a 260lb DE and a pass rushing beast (albeit at a small school), and we convert him to OLB. Go figure.

Well, we can always trade for Derrick Johnson and convert him to FB.

My main question about an MLB trade

is what it means long-term, when Stewart Bradley gets healthy. They don’t want to have two guys signed to huge deals at one position.

I personally don’t expect the Eagles to make a big move because 1) they’re not a risk-the-future-to-plug-a-hole-this-year-and-go-for-it team, and 2) they’ve been tiptoeing around this potentially uncapped 2010, so they’re not taking on anyone that costs them money in ’10 and beyond.

(too many hyphens?)

My guess is they’ll try to sign Jackson, Celek, Bradley (if he gets healthy), etc. to long-term extensions. Maybe throw a little dough Sheldon’s way since he’s being a good soldier/corner.

Why should he get recognition? I mean, his grammar is great. I’ll give him that. However, the info is generally very thin and some of the filler info and the sentence fluff is extraordinarily cringe-worthy. I’ll admit this is one of his better posts but for someone that posts as much as he does and obviously wants to be taken seriously, he should work on the quality of his content. Post better info, and post less. When you get the better info part down, post more.

He actually believes it’s true, but we all give him crap and tell him he’s an idiot. Is it the same sort of deal with you thinking Trent is HOF material, where you believe it and people give you crap for it, or is it just a joke? Hope I don’t come off as an ass, but I saw the name and just had to ask.

Edwards was a steal in the 3rd round.

He was hailed as the best QB in the draft by Bill Walsh.

Edwards simply doesn’t have the team around him right now to succeed. No one could in his position. He has shown, early in his career mind you, that if given time he puts up HOF type numbers.

He is the future of the NFL. I’d bet you anything Bill Belicek would trade Brady for Edwards straight up. Brady is finished in 2 – 3 years. Edwards is the next Brady.

Um...

You aren’t Trent Edwards, who has proven to be one of the sharpest minds in the NFL equiped with one of the most accurate arms. Trust me, Brady would be gone in a heartbeat if the folks over at One Bills Drive offered Edwards for him in a straight up trade.

Belichick would love to be able to mold the total package that we here in Buffalo called Trent Edwards. Can you imagine how many Super Bowls the Pats would attend the next 10 years with Edwards at the helm? 5? maybe 6?

by TrentEdwardsHoF2018 on Oct 26, 2009 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

So, would Belichick take Ryan Fitzpatrick for Tom Brady straight up?

I mean, the Patriots obviously had the chance to trade for him. Unless the Bills are so enamored with Trent Edwards, they want to protect him by not exposing him to opposing defenses. That must be it, right?

Are you kidding?

Ryan Fitzpatrick is nowhere near the man and QB that Trent is.

Trent is going to dominate this league as soon as he gets some coaching. Belichick would kill to have a player as smart and accurate as him.
