Attention: Eagles fans.

Thanks for supporting the Eagles. I know there's not a lot of us, but it's cool that there's actually people that support the team, even when we do stupid crap like lose to the Raiders. The ones that recognize that we have one of the best coaching staffs in the league, starting with one Andy Reid. The ones that know Donovan McNabb is a franchise QB. The fans that don't freak out after every tiny little setback.

I'm not talking to you, Mr. Bipolar Fan. You know who you are. You're the guy that will be the first to talk smack to another team as soon as we win, and you'll be the first to scream Bloody Mary when we're losing by 3 in the first quarter.

I'm not talking to you, Mr. Negative Nancy. Nothing would ever be good enough for you. We could win a game by 17 points, and you'll whine about the 3 and out we had in the 2nd quarter. We could win a Super Bowl, and you'll gripe that we couldn't win one while Dawk was with the Eagles. Jeff Lurie could mail you a $100 bill, and you'd complain about how it was folded.

I'm not talking to you, Mr. Bring In The Guy That's Backing Up McNabb This Year. Yeah, you're the guy with the A.J. Feeley, Jeff Garcia, Michael Vick, and Kevin Kolb jerseys. The one who pitches a fit every time McNabb throws one in the dirt. Because everyone knows Tom Brady and Peyton Manning never throw incomplete passes.

I'm talking to the real Eagles fans. The ones who realize that only one team can win a Super Bowl each year. The ones who know that they are fortunate to have a team who consistently wins and wins playoff games. The ones who know that as great as they are, Brett Favre has only one Super Bowl ring, John Elway lost three Super Bowls before he won two in a row at the ripe young age of 37, and Dan Marino never got one.

There's no accountability here or anywhere. If we're lucky enough to win a Super Bowl with Reid and McNabb, or Reid and Kolb, or whatever, I don't wanna see you at the party unless you stuck with the team. Calling for Jeff Lurie to bring in another coach because you think he'll be able to magically guide us to a Super Bowl victory is not supporting the team. Saying that Reid and/or McNabb are incapable of winning a championship because they've yet to do so is not only illogical*, it makes me want to punch you in the throat.

Supporting the team means supporting every player that suits up for us and every coach employed by the team as long as they are with the Eagles (and Brian Dawkins forever, assuming, of course, he is not playing the Eagles). You don't have to wish them well in their personal life, but you better want, with every bone in your body, for them to be able to do what needs to be done to win, or else you don't bleed green.

So to everyone supporting the Eagles, thanks. Nice to have you here. Everyone else can go to hell.

*because according to that logic, no one would be capable of winning a championship ever

Thanks for telling us what a real fan is.

Can you come to my job, and tell me what a real office worker is?

I’m having a plumber over tomorrow, will you stay at my place and tell him what a real plumber is? You can follow him home and watch him have sex with his wife, and give him pointers on that, too,

Since, you know, there’s only one way to “be” something, and it’s your way.

Lucky that we have the aribiter of all things football on the board.

Alright, I’m sorry, didn’t mean to bite your head off.

I’m just chafing at the board.

After a tough loss not only do we have to sit through the kneejerk reactions, then we have to sit through WAVE 2 of the kneejerk reactions, where people post ad nauseum to tell us what does and doesn’t constitute a “real fan” — and usually the only criteria is “You meet MY definition of a real fan”

Yeah, same idea.

I mean, we’re talking about fandom. Fan, short for fanatic. A religious fanatac is just as likely to scream “THE APOCALYPSE!” at the first snowfall as he is to calmly sit by while fire is falling from the sky going “We’re in God’s hands”

There’s plenty of ways to be crazy about sports. I’m more middle of the road (though I’ll admit to being a little hurt and panicky about the Birds last night) but it’s easy to see there’s a large population of fans on the board, regardless of how that fanaticism manifests.

Haha rec’d for truth.

After a bad game, there are usually three kinds of posts on these blogs.

1.) "What Went Wrong Tonight Against the (insert opponent’s name here).
2.) “It’s time for (insert player/coach/cheerleader/mascot/ball-boy here) to Go!”
3.) “People Should Shut the Hell Up, We’re Fine.”

I would say #2 comes first, followed by a wave of #3, with some #1 sprinkled in for good measure. There’s nothing wrong with that though, since I try to take the time and read all these fanposts anyway, but it is a funny observation.

Interesting duality. I don’t agree with it as I haven’t been a McNabb fan for some time now. Too inconsistent and costs us games, often times big ones. Sorry, but I feel we need someone who can make quick decisive throws and more importantly — accurate

my only issue with this is that

look at the teams who have been trying to find a decent QB … do we want to go through that? McNabb makes plays I’d rather deal with his inconsistency then go through multiple seasons looking for the next QB.

isn't kolb supposed to be that?

and moreover, at this point, does the QB really have to be a playmaker? i’d contend that with all the weapons currently on the team, the only thing our QB needs to do in order for the team to be successful is get the ball in their hands quick and on time, and let them make the plays.

there’s no reason that the team can’t be successful with kolb at QB. he may not be a better playmaker than mcnabb, he may not throw a prettier deep ball than mcnabb, but i’m not so sure the team wouldn’t go further with kolb than it might with mcnabb.

but that being said, going with mcnabb might not be the wrong answer, either. we’ve been saying it for a decade now, but this year could be the year, and mcnabb could be the one to take us over the hump.

and i should also note that i was advocating dumping both reid and mcnabb after that cincinnati game last season. i really thought that would have been the tipping point. that that was a game so awful against a team so bad, that they couldn’t even lose it. i mean, a fucking tie. how could they not cut bait and run after tying the 2-11 bengals?

i said it at the time,

this team had excellent depth all over the field, they had 2 franchise QBs, and they had two first round draft picks, 5 total in the first 3 rounds.

if they had fired reid, this would have been the most attractive head coaching position to open up this decade.

I guess I get what your saying

But I worry more about how our team does than how many people we could get to try for our head coaching position.

by homestar2281 on Oct 19, 2009 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

well, from my vantage point, it looks like our team just lost to a 1-6 team that had lost by 37 the previous week to the team that we now trail by 1.5 games.

I'm getting to the point where I agree

No QB on our roster is anywhere near as good as McNabb…and therein may lie our problem. As long as we have McNabb we rely on him to be our playmaker, when we might not need the QB to have all of that responsibility on his shoulders.

Between Jackson, Maclin, Avant, Celek, Westy, Weaver, and McCoy…I’d say this is a year that would probably benefit from getting the ball out of the QBs hands.

by jalarsen1 on Oct 20, 2009 12:09 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Then why not just sign Garcia on the cheap and trade McNabb AND Kolb?

Save ourselves some money and get more pieces. If that’s really all we need, why isn’t that the plan being advocated?

Think about the game managing QBs that have won Superbowls. They’ve all had stellar defenses. Not good or even great defenses, but historically good defenses. Otherwise, it’s been quality, playmaking QBs on the winning side. Manning, Roethlisberger, Brady, Warner, Elway, Favre. Stretching back at least 15 years I really only see two game-managers that won a Superbowl. Three if you argue that’s what Brady was in his first SB.

Our defense is good. Could be great if it weren’t for our linebackers. But we aren’t historically great. If Kolb can’t be a playmaker, we won’t win a SB. Having other playmakers isn’t enough. We need a playmaker leading them.

by NOLACuse on Oct 20, 2009 10:22 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

the only thing our QB needs to do in order for the team to be successful is get the ball in their hands quick and on time, and let them make the plays.

Oh that’s all he needs to do … well then lets get rid of McNabb and grab some dude off the street … I didn’t know it was that easy … wow.

Haha. Yea, that's what I'm saying.

Why bother having Kolb or McNabb? If that’s all they need to do they are too expensive. I’ll be glad to do it for 1/4 of what Kolb is making.

Part of me wishes I wasn't an Eagles fan so I could say "Do it."

Get rid of McNabb and see just how much fun it will be. Even if Kolb is good, the minute he throws three interceptions in a game people will crawl back out of the woodwork to lament McNabb being gone or Reid not doing more to find a better QB. Pretending McNabb is not one of the best 6 or 7 QBs in the league is ridiculous. The grass is always greener for some people. Peyton Manning couldn’t catch a break as recently as 5 years ago.

i agree completely. i don’t think reid should be fired. i don’t think mc’nabb should be benched. i am not at all happy about the raiders, but these are things that can be fixed. every team has bad games. i think it’s a little early in the season to call the eagles an 8-8 team. that being said, they could go 3-13 and they’ll still be my team. that would be around the time i would start wanting a new coach. that being said, some of the mistakes were horrid, and hopefully not repeated.

I DEFINITELY don't think we should bench McNabb

But I’d like to see Andy run a game plan that he had prepared for Kolb with McNabb under center. We’d probably be awesome. With Kolb under center, we take the focus off the QB and get the ball quickly into the hands of our playmakers. (screens, short passes, running game, etc…) With McNabb it’s slow developing, low percentage BOMBS!

Wow

I agree that a sizable and vocal minority of Eagles’ fans are like the author describes in his post but he almost takes an almost equally opposing ridiculous stance.

Reid laid a complete egg yesterday and the Reid-bashers had plenty of well-deserved barbs and criticisms yesterday. Given it will likely take 10 wins to get into the playoffs, this one could really come back to bite the Eagles.

Reid is a good coach but this franchise really has been closer to being a mediocre one since the ’04 Super Bowl and the Eagles were very fortunate to make the playoffs last year against some very unlikely odds that last week.

by MG77 on Oct 20, 2009 12:53 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Criticism is different than calling for a mid-season coaching change when we are 3-2.

I think that’s really the point of the rant there. Be critical, but be level-headed too. Submarining the franchise because Reid calls bad timeouts and doesn’t run enough is not a smart solution.

This is a really nice write up

I am tempted to copy paste it to the Cowboys site and just change the names – and the reference to playoff wins of course.

by One.Cool.Customer on Oct 20, 2009 10:51 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Wait, so supporting the team means you can’t criticize them?

All supporting the Eagles means — in my definition — is that you always root for the Eagles (and whoever is playing Dallas) to win. Within that, there’s lots of room for divergence of opinion re: Reid, McNabb, Vick, etc, so long as you’re rooting for that person to succeed on behalf of the team.

For example, I’ve had about enough of Andy Reid. But I’m rooting for him to coach the team to victories. On the other hand, when they lose to a (currently) lowly franchise like the Raiders, damn right I’m going to criticize.

Likewise, most McNabb critics are still rooting for him to lead the Eagles to victory on Sundays…they just think someone else could do a better job.

I wonder if I can bill Jeff Lurie and Peter Angelos for the years of therapy their teams are going to put me through.

I do not think Reid should call plays anymore. I do think that Morningwig should be fired. I also cannot stand it when Reid’s teams make the same mistakes every year, over and over.

BEST CHANCES TO WIN. Sure, we have a chance with anyone. Do we have a better chance with another coach or a guy who is amazing at drafting and developing players and knows the team like the back of his hand? Same thing with McNabb… sure, we had a chance with Garcia, Feeley, Kolb, Vick, whoever is playing QB. Do we have a better chance with one of them than with McNabb? The guy who has more playoff wins than any active QB besides Tom Brady and Brett Favre?

Not only one way to be a fan

To say that if you criticize the team then you are not a fan sounds like a Cowboys fan, not an Eagles fan. I did not support the Vick move for mostly football reasons. I did not support letting Dawk hit free agency again for football reasons. I was vocal about both. That means I do give a crap and I do bleed green. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t care about either of those moves.

I understand the sentiment of this post but we voice our displeasure because we are fans! We want to see them win. If they fired Reid and hired Steve Spurrier, I would be on this site ripping the move. Does that mean I am not a fan? Quite the contrary. We vent because we are passionate and we do care whether or not this team wins.

Andy Reid is just as successful as Cowher and more successful than Gruden in every single area except for one.

You think Jon Gruden or Bill Cowher would’ve outcoached Belichick in that Super Bowl? Hell, Patriots BEAT Cowher that year in the playoffs, just like they beat us. Jon Gruden is a mediocre coach. He inherited a great team built by Tony Dugy and didn’t mess up just enough to win a Super Bowl. He’s the Trent Dilfer of coaches. He doesn’t deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as Reid or Cowher.

Fact is, Andy Reid knows how to run a team, and every year we have a chance to go to the Super Bowl. How many fans can say they have a chance every year? I firmly believe if we stick with him, we’ll eventually win it. It took Cowher forever to win one.

Bill Cowher 1998 – 2000: 22-26

Should they have fired Cowher? Reid’s worst stretch as a coach he’s STILL above .500, and so many people here would get rid of him for a coach with a nearly identical resume. It doesn’t make sense and it doesn’t put us in a better position to win.
