Time to bring in Bill Cowher
I'm over Andy Reid. I can't take his play calling anymore. He should run the ball more. He should manage the clock better. In order to get over the last hurdle to winning a Super Bowl, the Eagles need to bring in a coach with experience winning a Super Bowl. Bill Cowher is out there and just about ready to start coaching again. Jeff Laurie should go get him. Peter King had an interesting note in his MMQB column that really emphasizes my point here and I think you guys should all check it out - it's the second stat of the week.
The Eagles and Andy Reid's agent,Bob LaMonte, are in negotiations to extend his contract beyond the 2010 season, after which the current deal is due to expire.
Why with the difficulties that the Eagles have had winning the big game should the Eagles even consider resigning Andy Reid? Bill Cowher is out there and we should go get him - unless of course he's already here...

You should really check out the stat of the week #2.

that goddamn cincy game last year separating the two in the win-loss column

Hmm...
After reading the stat of the week #2, I would say that weakens your argument. It is pretty eerie, but the two are virtually the same at this point in their careers. The stat of the week even ends with him saying…
I think if you asked the average Steelers fan, he’d think the Rooney family’s patience with Cowher was a smart thing.
Maybe the average Eagles fan can’t see the future as clearly right now, but I would give one caution to those with Reid fatigue: It appears they not only have Donovan McNabb for at least a couple more prime seasons (probably), but also have developed a legitimate heir in 25-year-old Kolb. Ten years into the Cowher reign, the Steelers didn’t have one quarterback, never mind two.
Everyone really should check out the stat of the week, though. It’s really quite crazy.

they suggest the eagles should be patient with reid. You say we should hire cowher? what am I missing?

wtf
its not just reids fault. the offesnive line looked like shit and we couldnt get a fucking pass off. i say Sign Runyan. we lost to a semi-talented team. 3 top ten picks on offense and a pretty respectable defensive line consisting of Richard Seymour and Greg Ellis. Not to mention captain Kirk, Howard, and Asomugha. im livid but not that suprised

You gotta be kidding me. 3 first round picks is no excuse, hell Russel is Ryan Leaf 2.0, and McFadden didnt even dress for the game. We just flat out got our asses wooped by the worst team in the league.

Well Ryan Leaf 2.0 made us look pretty bad yesterday
Their defense is not that bad. mcnabb was sacked, what, 3,4 times yesterday? Our line played terrible. First game of the season they kept up with San Diego.(Granted the Chargers arent as good as the Eagles) im not saying theyre a phenomenal team, not saying theyre better than us as a whole. The loss can be rationalized in a few ways

McFadden's a joke if you ask me...
and him not playing was actually a good thing for Oakland. McFadden has no vision whatsoever and can only make plays with his athleticism. Michael Bush is the better Bush in the NFL. He reminds me of Jamal Lewis (when he was good).

Don’t be too hasty with that extension, Mr. Lurie.
I’m tired of the repeated mistakes of the Reid era — awful clock management, these clunker games against inferior opponents, inconsistency from week-to-week.
Overall very good coach, but he’s also become a laughingstock.
I wonder if I can bill Jeff Lurie and Peter Angelos for the years of therapy their teams are going to put me through.

really remarkable actually…
probably as remarkable as the number records of the 2 coaches through 165
by cavortingEagle on Oct 19, 2009 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Wait, that stat destroys your argument. Why point it out?
Cowher was in almost exactly the same spot as Reid through the same time frame. The lesson is then be patient, not change coaches. A complete coaching change means large-scale changes in system, etc. We are in a good spot. If you think Cowher is a good choice and you’re quoting that stat, then Reid has to be a good choice too. The logic can’t go any other way.

I’m frustrated with fans who want to dump everything Andy’s built when in fact one of the coaches who so many want brought in to replace Reid is identical to him through 165 games.

i never wanted cowher….i want bill"ive got 3 sb rings" bellicheat…seriosly….he has some of the best clock management skills and he knows how to close out a game.

Granted Rieds play calling blew chunks, but we also had 4 backup offensive linemen playing.
I can see it happening already. The Eagles go get a new coach (maybe Cower), the new coach wants to rebuild and do things his way, and youre going to be the one complaining when the Eagles have a bunch of 6 win seasons.

Reid is a above average coach. He needs to bring in a new assistant coach, that has a different football philosophy.
Marty Morningwig is a joke.

True Story
enough already……I know a guy worked for the Eagles……on the sidelines & locker rooms.
Certain things he was told not to repeat, even to family.
After the Eagles lost the NFC game vs the Bucs…..he told his brother,
" I shouldnt be telling you this, but Childress kept telling Reid, " I can’t believe he missed the open guy"
So how much longer are these McNabb tendencies gonna ruin season after season?"
by codi on Oct 19, 2009 4:32 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I'm assuming u think the problem is McNabb?
I agree, I recall one game where Reid called the same play 3 times. I think it was the Jags game a few years ago. He threw it to the same guy (TE i think) 3 times. Incomplete. If he would have looked to westy at least one of them, he would have had a easy score.

Great article
Hopefully it opens the eyes of some of these “fans.”

I love McNabb……but he has the exact same tendencies as Brett Favre…..gets too exited, tries to force the ball where it wont go…..
NFL films had a mic on Holmgren at Green Bay, he called Favre over to the sidelines and grabbed him and said, " Enough with the rocket passes?
sound familar?
by codi on Oct 19, 2009 4:44 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
really?? really??
McNabb and Favre are both good quarterbacks, but they are really not alike at all, other than their affinity for throwing the deep ball. All one has to do is look at age and career interceptions to see that mcnabb definitely does not have the same tendencies as Brett Favre, that being said, Favre is a future hall of famer, so why is this a negative again??

What about Tony Dungy?
I’m not saying get him as our coach but look at his example.
Dungy spent six years in Tampa and put together a very solid team but couldn’t get over the hump. After firing Dungy, Gruden is hired and Tampa wins the Bowl. Dungy moves on and eventually wins one for Indy.
With the team we have Cowher would not be a good fit but perhaps another coach with a similar philosophy to Reid could get us over the hump.
Personally I think Reid has too many flaws that prevent him from being a great coach.
And I didn’t form this opinion last night.
That said if he gets us a Super Bowl this year or next give him an extension.
If not it’s time to move on.
Why extend him now isn’t 12 years long enough to bring us a Super Bowl?
I guess we need 14 by this example.
The road to victory!

Cowher
Cowher needed only 13 years to win “the Big One”. He’s a part of the Marty Schottenheimer tree that has like 1200 winning seasons and 10 post-season victories. Cowher’s and Dungy’s SB wins were more about the refs and Peyton Manning than about the coaching. But Banner needs to straighten Reid’s head out a little.

Just dont let him run the game
I guess it would be sort of strange for a coach not to be calling the game but he can seriously screw things up sometimes. Reid is awesome at every part of being a coach except during game time. He has built a pretty damn good team, he just has to let someone else play madden for him.
by Bo Jangles on Oct 19, 2009 6:47 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Jason, perhaps this post suggest we should bring back the “do you want Andy Reid to stick around after this game” (or whatever it was called) poll back?
Okay so maybe it's time to move on. Hopefully it'll be moving on to winning a Championship!

Thank you ...
I heard tons of people ready to fire Reid less we forget the man has 100 wins he is entitled to a bad game every once in awhile.

I say he's entitled to 1 or 2 "bricks" per year.
They’ve happened with such regularity over his tenure, I must confess, I’ve started to think they are on purpose.
by cavortingEagle on Oct 19, 2009 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Why is he entitled to this? I’m not saying we should overreact to one awful loss, but as you say, this is a pretty regular occurrence of the Andy Reid Eagles.
2008 — tied the Bengals, absolute clunker games to the Redskins and the Ravens (albeit a pretty good team)
2007 — Redskins, Giants, Bears (I know the Giants were very good…but it’s a game in which the offense did absolutely nothing 16-3)
2006 — Tampa (The Bruce Gradkowski game), Jags, Titans
Sure, they can recover from this. Last year’s team was in a deeper hole and came back. I get that.
But these games do count. I don’t see the Steelers losing to the Browns or the Patriots losing to the Titans. For a supposedly elite team, this inconsistency is more of a fatal flaw than just a little quirk.
I wonder if I can bill Jeff Lurie and Peter Angelos for the years of therapy their teams are going to put me through.

Don't want Reid gone but..
If they were to get rid of him I would rather see Gruden come in than Cowher. Gruden just makes so much more sense than Cowher would. Look at the offensive game that each coach has had throughout their careers. In Oakland Gruden had Garner and a few reliable hands receivers(Celek/Avant) and play makers(DJax/Maclin), with a veteran QB to just manage a game. Cowher always had that power running game. We don’t have the players for that and it would take much longer to rebuild than if Gruden would be the boss.
