Early games open thread

A heavyweight matchup in the Bayou between the undefeated Saints and Giants highlights the early schedule of NFL games today.

The other game of note to Eagles fans will be the Redskins hosting the Kansas City Chiefs. The winless Chiefs put a great fight against Dallas last week, can they finish off the Skins this week and get their first win?

Baltimore at Minnesota which features two ex Eagles coaches should be a good game as well.

Go Saints and Chiefs!!!

Ravens at Vickings might be a good game, but all the washing of Favre’s balls will make it unwatchable. I’d much rather see Giants @ Saints, but instead of watching a division rival in a game pitting probably the two best teams in the conference if not the league, I get four hours of grown men deep-throating an elderly hillbilly.

If you got Gints Sints you wouldn’t get Eagles Raiders.

I’m not sure why people still don’t understand the doubleheader rules.

I think the point is that the rules suck. There should always be 4 games on during the afternoon. I really don’t care about Ravens-Vikings. So instead of having a game I will watch- with commercials, I’m just watching the NFL Network’s Game Center. Its stupid. Period.

Open question

And not sure I have a definitive opinion here yet.

Seeing what you’ve seen to date would you have rather had Percy Harvin or Jeremy Maclin?

by andyreidswaistline on Oct 18, 2009 1:03 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Great question..

Honestly, I dunno. Percy has been productive since Day 1. But Maclin has that big play ability…

I dunno.

by LegendKnight22 on Oct 18, 2009 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maclin. He had less injury issues in college and so far has had fewer in his rookie season. (Harvin has missed practices and parts of—if not whole—games already.

That was a scary efficient drive. They made the Giants’ D look old, slow, and out-of-position at least 10 out of the 15 snaps then.

Look no further to the big time “leader” in Ray Lewis as his defense gets plowed. Mean while the young stud Bart Scott is leading a pretty formidable Jets defense in NY.

Joe Flacco is having a bit of a sophmore slump. Frankly, I thought he was overrated last year and I think he’s getting exposed a bit this time around.

by JasonB on Oct 18, 2009 1:28 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The Raves are asking him to do too much this year – they’ve moved away from running as much s they did last year and don’t have the receivers to be as dependant on the pass as they want to be.

Not sure I agree – he’s playing a tough defense and his weapons are less than lethal.

It’s certainly going to get harder for QBs like Flacco, Ryan & Sanchez as teams collect more film on them and identify their tendencies.

Doubtful. They’re in the NFC. Most of the writers are still convinced the AFC is superior, hence AFC teams keep leading the power polls

by HoosierPop on Oct 18, 2009 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

But all the national writers are in love with the Giants. If the Saints trounce the GIants today, the national media will get on board.

Do they need to? They seem—at this point—just as comfortable playing shoot out style like the GSOT Rams, or the Billick Vikings. “Okay,” said Brees, “they scored. Now it’s out turn. They can’t catch us if we stay ahead.”

Wow, Aikman doesn’t know the game. A safety involves a free kick BACK to the Saints. Thus, in no was does a fumble and safety help. NO gets the ball regadless, and guaranteed points on the board vs. the potential of a TD.

3 is more than 2

And in all likelihood the saints probably don’t score after the safety ‘punt off’ with limited seconds and one time out.

So it was stupid argument but probably accurate…Saints get a minimum of 3 off this TO probably – whereas the safety is 2 – it’s weak but probably an accurate argument

by RadioheadbeatlesEagles on Oct 18, 2009 3:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Honestly? A lot like they did in the Eagles’ game against them. Some pass pressure (but not a lot, and all coming out of blitzes; the front 4 is only occupying the line.) Decent against the run, but not great—they’ve not allowed long gains, but they have allowed a # of 5+ yard runs on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd down.

Mostly, they seem to be doing it with scheme. Got far enough ahead to make the run a liability, and are playing out of what seems to be a base nickel, pass-stopping (not blitz/pass prevention) philosophy.

And yes, swarming to the tackle as mentioned above.

What in the unholiest of hells on the tape says that you should drop back seven into coverage and constantly 4-man rush Brees? This is the second time I’ve watched the Saints play a good defense, and the second time they take their foot off the pedal and let Brees pick them apart.
