The wild Eagle has ran its course

Am I the only person who thinks that every time Vick steps on the feild that it is simply a waste of a down? This is really getting old already. Now im not sure if the problem here is that Vick just doesnt have the play making ability that he use to or if Andy is not using Vick properly. It just seems like every time he steps on the feild that we are lucky to gain 3 yards and we also waste a down EVERY time! He looks horrible every time he throws the ball. When Vick is out there i feel like i know what to expect every time, If he runs the ball or gives it to someone else to run we will gain 3 yards tops, and if he passes the ball dont expect it to be anywheres near the receiver. Im not gonna sit here and say that when we first signed him that i did think even if only for a moment that in some way he could help our team and make us that much more dangerous, but now its becoming more and more obvious that in NOOO way has he helped our team. I think the only way he will ever help our team is after we trade him next year and get a good draft pick. The only people who are really effective in the wild eagle so far this year are Desean Jackson and LeSean McCoy.  Let me get some of your thoughts on Vick and our wasted downs.

It's been 2 games

What is it with fans and their completely judging/dismissing plays/players on such a small sample size? (referring to sports fans as a whole here)

my issue with it is that we have probably the most dangerous offense in the nfl without it

its just not necessary and it tends to put us in 3rd and long (more than 4) situations

I like our O a little more than the Colts.

Although Manning is Manning. We have more depth at WR than they do. The lines are about even, and TE is very close, but Clark is better.

Our production as an O has been better so far this year. I think Indy is #3 in my book so far.

  1. NO
  2. Philly
  3. Colts.

I agree with yophillybro. New Orleans is probably slightly better, but i certainly would not trade offenses with Indy

I think the Saints are potent,

But we have more weapons,

WR Phila> NO,
RB Phila=<NO (slight edge to NO, marginaly),
TE Philly=NO
OL Philly>NO
QB Philly<NO

Looks pretty evenly matched IMO.

But Brees is the X Factor though. So they get the edge. Also I think NO is rolling right now, that type of confidence can be dangerous.

But, we are no far behind. We have the #2 O so far, I think we can surpass NO because of the receivers we have.

You can have them, I live Mac and Jack better.

You didn’t factor in Avant or Brown, or even Gibson. YOu can’t tell me that NO is as deep in WR as we are.

Henderson is inconsistant and doesn’t have as much upside as Maclin. And I think Jackson is already better than Colston.

Jackson draws double coverage, Colston doesn’t.

It's too soon to say that.

You know I love the Iggles, and the O shows a lot of promise. We have the talent and have shown some greatness, but we gotta play more winning teams to be sure.

Don’t forget that the birds failed their only real test so far against the Saints. So right now all we have have is an extended pre-season against B-teams. It’s been kind of like PSU playing out side of the Big 10. No competition.

Week 7 an later is when we either put up or shut up. And don’t expect Washington to lay down, either. Washington always rises to the Eagles level of play, a good rivalry gets that out of a team, so you cannot count them out as real competition.

The quality of your opponents honor you and make you a legend. We have the potential for a great season coming up.

Go Iggles!

They had a stat on the broadcast

That we were the second-most successful team (besides Miami) currently running the Wildcat. Obviously that’s not always Vick, but he has contributed somewhat. I’m not saying he has been spectacular so far, but with the level of competition the Eagles are playing (KC TB OAK), I’m OK with them trying it a couple times a game seeing if they find something that works and can help us down the road. Plus, the more productive Vick is, the higher draft pick we get next season.

by Tony4251 on Oct 12, 2009 12:50 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

It the threat of it that makes if effective. Who cares if you are getting 3 yard or 5.

Its just a running play anyway. Its only designed to gaine about 3-5 yards anyway and pick up a quick first down.

Notice we have NO REDZONE problems this year. Defense are a little confused, partially because of the threat the wildcat brings. The second we take that dynamic away, we go back to the old days of just throwing screens.

IMO as long as the wildcat is employed correct, and keeps drives alive. I’m in love with it. Andy wants defenses to fear him, and slowly and slowly they are begging to.

Imagine, the second the stop defending the wildcat, Andy will most definately exploit it. We can’t be silly and limit our options, just to appeal to football fans who think erroneously that the wildcat is a trick play.

Bleed green, or don't bleed at all!

That stat was based upon the total number of yards – It didn’t factor in the number of times they’ve run it.

Maybe we should consider that one of the reasons we are so successfull,

is because fo the effect the Wildcat has on the defense, even when its not being used. Just think of all the time defenses spend preparing for it, and the lack of preparation that exist with our base package.

Why would we want to stop it, when over all the offense is flowing. Johnothan Vilma said it best after the NO game. “They had no idea what the were going to do, the defense was guessing”. He also said he would hate to face the Eagles again because of it. Its that complexity of the offense that makes it sooo effective, why change it. The second you dumb it down, you become predictable, and your numbers will see a drop.

So keep doing what we are doing now, we can’t be stupid and ask them to change it up. We must STOP listieng to the press, and think these matter through a little better. If it aint broke, than don’t fix it.

Running Game

Ike Reese actually made a good point—shocking, I know—that the reason the Eagles need or do run the Wildcat is because the O-Line struggles in blocking for the traditional running game. With Shawn Andrews and Herremans being out and Runyan being gone, your best run blockers aren’t on the field. The Wildcat allows for the Eagles to still have some semblance of a running game to keep the passing game honest and give the other teams various looks.

by doubleh on Oct 12, 2009 12:57 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

thank you.

Thats is a very very good point.

Think about it, if we ran straight I and gained 3-5 yards a run, would we ask Andy to stop it. Especially if we see the run open up the pass later on. Than would we still ask him to stop it?
No, because we know its just part of the offense, and is setting up other things. The wild cat is just setting up other things. Thats all.

It gets us first downs, which lead to TDs.

Bleed green, or don't bleed at all!

by yophillybro on Oct 12, 2009 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t agree with the best run blockers not being there though. Jason Peters is a phenomenal run blocker, as is MJG. The Wildcat takes seconds away by taking the extra step of snap/handoff out of the equation.

wow is this his second game ?

so after about a dozen snaps your ready to give up on it already…. He hasnt faced a team yet were we need 3 yards ….I think when we play NFC east teams (giants) and thier dominate line those 3 yards are gonna look good on 3 and 1 and 4th and 2. Give it about 5 or 6 games ……then make an opinion. I like it so far , I actually didnt expect him to come out of prison after 2 years and run for 100yds a game out the gate….He’ll work out im sure stop stressing his first 12 snaps..

by Mikegeminsky on Oct 12, 2009 12:58 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

exactly.

The second that safety bites on Vick running with the ball, and he comes in to defend Vick, either Maclin or DJax is one on one (if not both of them). Somebodies getting open and scoring. We have to be patient, it will be used at one point for throwing, only when the situation is right, and the safetie is biting.

Other than that, you are absolutely correct. Those 3-5 yards for wildcat plays start to look real good on 3-1 vs the Giants. We just haven’t needed those yards yet, so the fans don’t appreciate the formation as a result.

Bleed green, or don't bleed at all!

by yophillybro on Oct 12, 2009 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

be patient

I still think that we have yet to see the full extent of what the wildcat(wildeagle) can do. I still believe that Reid is holding back. I think that we will see the formations really start to open up,when the eagles start to play some division rivals. So for now I think the eagles should still use it, right now they are simply fine tuning it

by hoya03 on Oct 12, 2009 1:08 PM EDT via mobile reply actions   0 recs

more annoyed with...

The coaches using the wildcat in the wrong situations. The Eagles’ offense does not need to run end arounds when they are up two touchdowns from the the wildcat. I thought Vick would help in short yardage situations and the occasional 1st and 10. The coaches aren’t using him effectively right now.

Vick and the wildcat does have its uses, but the Eagles should just run the ball more, especially as its line get stronger, because the Eagles have two very good RBs, a Pro Bowl fullback, and need to keep the good defenses honest against the pass and run. Then we can run the super sexy play-action bombs to Mac n Jack all day.

he dont throw

everytime they bring vick in its a run .. a qb option or a draw .. so the defnese knows its run .. until vick gets a play call to throw it wont keep the defense honest

by jack is better than asante on Oct 12, 2009 1:42 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Unless they see the safeties begin the rush the line, that will break the cover 2, to a cover 1

Imagine everytime Vick gets the ball, the safeties rush the line, the we can just run a bootleg, pass, since either Maclin or Jackson will have single coverage.

This would only work if they notice the safeties are anticipating. So it would take a few plays to set upa pass if needed.

Bleed green, or don't bleed at all!

first he did throw … second the play where he “scrambled” for 11 yards is how I believe we should use Vick in our version of the wildcateaglehorsedolphinunicorn. Go in there like a normal QB if nothing is available run, its like a draw play only he could actually throw it.

There's still more plays for vick in that formation

has there been any need to pull out a big trick play yet from that formation? He’s only been in vs tampa and KC, both of which we were beating by plenty of points. Why ruin a good trick play now in a non-crucial situation against a bad team. Give it time, I expect to see some pretty creative stuff in the upcoming weeks against th rest of the NFC east and beyond.

BUT....

We have been in cruise control in all 3 of our wins. I do think Vick will be making passes out of the wildcat, but for right now, why show the cards? Let him get comfortable. Let him take a bunch of snaps and a few hits. When we play the NFC East, they will have no game tape on plays we run with Vick passing.

I am tired of the “Wild Eagle” and I would like to see more of Mcnabb in the Shotgun and hurry up.

I would also like to see Vick actually throw the football.

This doesn’t mean that they should stop using the package. If it is working, keep doing it. I could careless what Andy does if we are winning and scoring points.

-Maybe he is waiting until the Giants game until they throw out of the “Wild Eagle.”
-Why show all tip your hand when we are playing scrub teams? I wouldn’t.
-Mario Manningham is doing better. I loved him @Michigan.
-I have Plantar fasciitis it hurts a lot. Manning better not heal in like 2 weeks. I have had this for like 8 months already!!
-Blitz much? Why did we blitz every play? I think we didn’t blitz like one time. I hope we don’t have to do that against the best in the NFC.
-Ellis Hobbs isn’t impressing me at all.
-Trotter looked good for a player that hasn’t been playing in like 2 years.
-Cover a TE? Lets hope Witten and Cooley don’t do that to Gocong.

If this were World of Warcraft, the fatman gets an epic fail for the Wildgimmick. In my section yesterday, the flood of boos whenever Vick stepped out on the field was quite deafening. It is time to put this dog to sleep…as it were.

Wildcat sucks

But so does our regular run game, and we have to do something.

If we get rid of anything, dump Castillo as his underachieving O-line. I don’t know why Reid and Castillo get all this credit for their focus on the O line. We only drafted one above average player (Herremans) and the best guy (Peters) was someone else’s. Our interior line is ineffective and simply unable to run block.

RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

by Imp on Oct 13, 2009 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

All right, docta

I’ll put the blame more squarely on Reid than Castillo. I guess it’s a garbage in, semi-recycled product out. But these guys all seem to be forgetting how to run block in the pros. Jamaal Jackson gives a workman-like effort but could easily be upgraded. MJG is collecting a paycheck in my opinion. I remember Kiper gushing over the fact that the Eagles were able to steal him in the draft, but all he’s ever been is inconsistent, overweight, and uninspiring. Part of me has to wonder whether Castillo’s coaching took away some of what made him good in college.

Maybe he was a real good run blocker…the kind Reid likes turning into mediocre pass blockers.

I think the line is improved this year than last. The pass protection has been very good. The sacks that McNabb took last game was on him, he was holding the ball trying to make a play.

We struggle running because of Herremans being out, and Jackson doesn’t get much push.

ATTN: Everyone complaining about anything

Eagles are 14th in rushing yards per game, despite being 19th in rushing attempts per game. We get 4.2 yards per carry, which is 12th.

People like to be told how to feel.

Andy can easily run the wildcat like Miami, he just hasn’t needed to. He shows a little bit of it, but hasn’t opened it up yet. You will see it more, when the games are closer. Vick will definately throw a TD out of that, but why show that now when you are up by 28 points. Andy is running the vanilla version so far.
