Josh Johnson gives the quote of the year so far
The Bucs' young QB and their coaching staff were evidently completely perplexed by what the Eagles' defense was doing to them.
"They were bringing everybody. They were bringing more than we had protection. They had an extra guy every time. The coaches in the locker room said they had never seen anything like that before."
Sounds like when I play Madden...
As much as I'd love to heap tons of praise on the "Ginger Genius" Sean McDermott, when your coaches sound as dumbfounded as the Tampa coaches apparently were... they just aren't very good coaches.

After the game ended
I said something I thought I’d never say as an Eagles fan: We blitzed way too much.
I loved every second of it.

It's alright.

i really like the corner blitz...
its smart, theyre faster and thin so its harder for them (QB) to comprehend on the fly.
by NJEagle on Oct 11, 2009 10:39 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
It's also pretty risky
The WR can quickly and easily get open. But, I do agree with corners being fast for the sack. Especially ours- they seriously know how to tackle.

The corner blitz is predicated on 1) safety help; and 2) the corners getting to the QB before he realizes what in the verdant hell is going on. We tend to have both assets working on our side, which is why the corner blitz works so well.

in the defense of the ginger genius, let’s give credit where credit is due. he is doing a fantastic job with a mediocre linebacker core and a 5th rounder trying to fill the shoes of the best eagles safety of all time. i’m excited to see where this all goes.

We got bit a bunch of time over lack of coverage due to blitzing corners/safeties/ballboys. It wasn’t all fine and dandy but it got the job done. Against a more competent offense it might’ve been a different story, but TB is so in the crapper it didn’t matter.

Good blitzing but that won’t work on the Giants come mid-October
Seriously Philly’s D needs to work on the penalties though. They gave up way too many yards on silly fouls.

Obviously that would be a different game and therefore a different gameplan… Who said it would work on the Giants?

+1. WAY too many penalty yards.

That’s called an All Out Blitz. Isn’t the point of blitzing sending more guys than blockers? Apparently, it’s new to the coaches in Tampa.

I think they meant the regularity with which we were sending so many guys.

As much as I hate to say this...
It was too much heat.
A better QB (or better wideouts) make this a much closer game. Josh was getting rid of the ball just in time most of the game. Had his receivers (Clayton) held onto the ball, we’d all be wanting to beat McDermott like a Red Headed stepchild, rather than praise his Ginger genius. We still have problems with elite Tight Ends.
I wonder if this wasn’t on purpose. The opposite of the Saints game. One week we don’t rush anybody, the next we don’t not rush anybody.
How about the penalties? Some seemed bogus, sure, but you can’t put yourself into position to be flagged in the first place (Macho)…
Still have stuff to work out.

Dontcha think the gameplan might have been different if that were the case? This game plan showed no respect for the QB or the WRs and was proved to be correct.
I highly doubt they’d run this kind of zero coverage if they were at all worried about the QB or wideouts making plays.
by JasonB on Oct 12, 2009 1:00 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, but...
Do you think the game plan took into account expected drops?
Just didn’t like what I saw. Take for instance the play where Asante got flagged for grasping the facemask. Had the Eagles not been in this blitzkrieg defense, there might have been a safety deep to help. Jim Johnson blitzed more as the goal line got closer because the back of the end zone acted like that safety. The further you get away from the endzone the greater the chance for a big play…
Blitz the hell out of Jamarcus next week too, I guess, but not sure I want 8 guys rushing the passer against the Cowboys.

The Saints game we started out blitzing and got burnt by the quick TE pass and the Ginger Genius backed off. I don’t think you can expect the same package for every team. That said Johnson kept a lot of plays alive with his feet Manning would have been sacked more if the same pressure is present in the Giants game.
We’ll have to see how McDermott does game planning.

The Saints defensive gameplan was relatively poor
The only way anyone has ever rattled Drew Brees is by bringing heat. Sure, he’s unbelievable at hot reads, but you let him sit back in the pocket and he’ll destroy any defense.
However, this time, there was too much pressure. As a fan, you love to see it, but the name of the game is unpredictability. I know the gameplan was to blitz the bejesus out of Josh Johnson to rattle the young QB, and it worked. We will probably see more of the same next week against Russell, but don’t expect so many house calls when we’re playing real football teams. This is just to establish a frightening identity to the league’s quarterbacks.
I’d say message received.

These two things don't jive...
“this time, there was too much pressure.”
“it worked”
They can’t both be true. If it worked, they didn’t bring too much pressure.

This was an exhibition game...
It really is incredible how many really, really, really bad teams there are this year. On that poll earlier in the week, I think I picked Tampa, but I had the dual TV’s going today and had a chance to peek over at the Giants game for most of that game, and I think Oakland might be worse. Obviously, we have Oakland next week, and then the horrible Redskins – Anything less than 5-1 heading into the Giants game is a serious disappointment.
by Bye, Dawk :( on Oct 12, 2009 12:30 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
There may be more really bad teams than we realize. The team from Dallas was one Miles Austin career day away from losing to the Chiefs. The Chiefs.
And by losing, I don’t mean “not beating them by more than 2 touchdowns.”

Oakland
Oh my god the Raiders are bad. So are the Bucs, but wow, Oakland is sooo shitty. Russell has no business being under center…It’s not all his fault but he is badddddd.

I was talking about this yesterday with my friends
Elite teams are: Colts, Broncos (?!), Eagles, Giants, Saints. Vikings
Not sold on the Bengals, Ravens, or the Patriots. The Bengals need to develop a killer instinct, the Ravens’ secondary doesn’t appear to be extraordinary or anything close, and Tom Brady just isn’t Tom Brady anymore. Or yet.
The bad teams list is remarkable. The Rams, Chiefs, Panthers, Raiders, Cowboys, Redskins, Jaguars, Bills, and Browns are all miserable. And I didn’t even mention the Lions (who I’d honestly take the spread on against any of those atrocities) or the Titans, who are now 0-5 and may belong in that category.
So much for parity. This is the most lopsided season I can remember; if the team that wins the Super Bowl isn’t in my Elite list, I’d be shocked – unless Brady becomes Brady.
by cwel87 on Oct 12, 2009 9:29 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Close... but not yet.
It’s a little early to have the Cowboys on that “really really bad” list. Don’t get me wrong… They’ve played horribly. But they’re still 3-2. Had the Chiefs figured out a way to keep Jay Ratliff from blocking a late FG yesterday, then I’d allow it, but for now we have to hold off for a couple weeks.
Don’t worry… I have a nice, long funeral written up and saved already for Dallas, and it’ll be unleashed when appropriate.

When it takes until overtime to dispose of a team that lost to the Raiders
I think it’s funeral time.
Although, I must admit, I had them written off to start the season, so I might be jumping the gun a bit because I formed my opinion early and haven’t seen anything yet to prove me wrong. Plenty of people thought they’d be good and contend, and are perplexed with their awful play but point to their 3-2 record. So I suppose we can’t quite write them off yet.
Nevertheless, I look forward to reading all your posts detailing the downfall of the NFC East owner-monger franchises. Been waiting a while for a spirited monologue from you!

Haha, it’s coming. I would have done a big write-up on the Redskins, but I haven’t seen their games (and I don’t think I want to see them). It would be pretty hackneyed if I wrote something up on them.
I have, however, seen every Dallas game (I watched their Bucs, Panthers, and Broncos games very closely, although I only casually watched their Giants game and caught only bits and pieces of the Chiefs game). I know the Cowboys inside and out – They’re in big, BIG trouble for this season and the foreseeable future. That one should be pretty good.

I think we blitzed too much today. i know that we are notorious for blitzing the hell out of the offense, but even for our standards i thought it was too much. it felt to me like mcdermott felt like johnson was inexperienced and wouldn’t be able to handle it, but he did well against it.
by eaglesinmd on Oct 12, 2009 12:51 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
No. he didn't do well.
He threw three picks, fumbled twice, got sacked 3 times, and had 5 or 6 passes tipped at the line. He managed 14 points. He didn’t do well against it.

I didn't mean to be mean..
I just want to separate “he did some good things” from “he did well.” He obviously didn’t do well… but the guy did show some guts and made some good throws. He was also the victim of some bad drops…
Overall though, the stats don’t lie. He did throw off his back foot, he didn’t find good lanes to throw, he often tucked the ball down and started scrambling too quickly, and he did have some errant throws.
by JasonB on Oct 12, 2009 9:44 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
he did make a lot of young mistakes but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little impressed with his leadership and heart.

Seemed to me
that they did best when we didn’t blitz. That QB was pretty accurate, and may have picked up apart if we had sat back. I remember when we TB had a first and goal, and the announcer said something about calling off the dogs. Well, one 1st and 2nd, we blitzed and TB got nowhere. On 3rd, we didn’t, and that’s when they scored the TD. Sometimes you do what works, even though it defies conventional wisdom.
That being said, I was shocked because I had never seen so much blitzing in my life in a pro game. It looked like high school out there.

when we blitzed corner & safety, Johnson lobbed it to the corner, but Kellen Winslow didn’t have a man on him for 15 yards in any direction

That's the risk you run when you throw the kitchen sink
And that’s why quarterbacks with more then two games of NFL experience make the gameplan a bad one.
And to counter my own statement, that’s why teams gameplan uniquely every week. We won’t be seeing 35 blitzes against the Giants, of this I can assure you – but we may see a lot of disguising and fake blitzes. Which really makes this pretty.
by cwel87 on Oct 12, 2009 9:37 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Why is everyone acting like the game plan didnt work? The gameplan ovbiously did work, they scored 14 points…. we had a ton of turnovers….. and a big part of the reason that they scored those touchdowns was because of the penalties that kept the drives moving.
We used the blitz perfectly.. exactly how we wanted to, to win the game. This game would have been a shutout useing this game plan minus penalties.
