Polamalu or Reed?
*NOTE - I've purposely left out Brian Dawkins to account for any biases. I am making similar posts on Behind the Steel Curtain and the Baltimore Beatdown leaving out their respective safeties as well. I'm looking for honest opinions, so for the sake of integrity, I implore you NOT to go to the other sites and vote.
Both are probable future Hall of Fame and game-changing safeties. Along with the aforementioned Dawkins, these two make up a triumvirate of preeminent safeties in the NFL. So, given the choice would you take for your team RIGHT NOW? Disregard ages and future production, as I'm only worried about the present.
Thank you for participating!

Yeah, easy question.
I wonder if I can bill Jeff Lurie and Peter Angelos for the years of therapy their teams are going to put me through.

Agreed this isn't even a contest.
Ed Reed is flat out playing out of his mind.

I’m sure you saw his TD return yesterday. That was just insane. Reed and Polumalu are younger than Dawk, but RIGHT NOW Reed is just on another planet from everyone.

Perhaps it would be not be so straightforward if the Steelers had played yesterday, too?
You know that Troy is capable of those kind of game-altering plays.

It has nothing to do with yesterday. Reed has what? 10 picks now this year? He’s been playing out of his mind for a month.
Polalmalu is a great player, but he isn’t capable of what Reed is. He’s not the game changer Reed is.
I don’t really put Polamalu in his class. At this point I don’t see Troy as a sure fire future hall of famer. Reed is.
by JasonB on Jan 5, 2009 11:29 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree, Troy is not a sure hall of famer yet
To be honest, I don’t think Ed Reed played long enough yet. But give him 2 more years and he’ll be in. Remember, he entered the league in 2002, and some people talk about how Dawk is gonna have trouble getting in as a safety. But Reed has considerable less years in the league than Dawk. I still love him though.

I don't think so ...
like Jason said Reed has been playing out of his mind for a month now and pretty much all season. I want a safety that changes the game Palamalu is great against the run but not so great in coverage. Ed Reed is a hard hitter who covers like a corner. I’ll take the guy with 43 career INTs and over 1000 yards over the guy with 17 career INTs and 200 yards every time.
I don’t want to take away from Palamalu because I think he is a top notch Safety, he’s just not in the class as Ed Reed. In the last 5 games Ed Reed has 8 INTs 3 Fumble recoveries and 2 TDs, in the last 5 games Palamalu has 2 INTs 0 Fumble recoveries and 0 TDs so it wasn’t just yesterday that put Reed in the lead.

Exactly. Saying Polamalu isn’t in the class of Reed is no slight at Troy…

Troy is so over rated
can’t tackle. Reed all the way

I really appreciate the discussion, guys, thank you!
The Steelers site is just complaining about Troy not being on their poll.

I think this probably the smartest way to do it ... for an unbiased result
I mean there is no doubt in my mind everyone here would have picked Dawkins …

Thank you!
My brother is a huge Eagles fan, so I’ve gotten to know them pretty well and Dawkins is one of my favorites.

I popped over there to see what they were saying ...
They are right in the fact that they are each more familiar with the other because they play each other twice a year. Dawkins is getting a bad rap for his age and people are saying he has fallen off.
Dawk and Polamalu are about even on tackles Reed isn’t up there. Polamalu and Reed have more picks but also more then double PD so more opportunities. Dawkins murders the two in sacks and forces fumbles so I think that evens them up.
These are very even safeties, A LOT more even then the other blogs are giving Dawkins credit for.

Id rather have Dawkins than either. While reed might have better stats Dawkin is our heart and soul and the eagles go nowhere without him.

Honestly? I’m gonna get killed for this but Ed Reed is better than Dawk. They’re both amazing but Ed Reed is the man.

Ed Reed in his prime < Brian Dawkins in his prime

by Remis on Jan 5, 2009 4:25 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
yeah..
the difference is that ed reed is in his prime but dawk is passed his.
Dawk may not have been quite as good of a pick artist, but he was still a damn good one, and he could lay the huge game changing hit..
Ed Reed still can’t force fumbles like Dawk does even to this day though
by Manoovi on Jan 5, 2009 4:38 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t know if I agree
dawk is passed his [prime]
he is still performing above his career averages that would suggest he is still in his prime if not improving right?
Yea Dawk has a clear advantage over Reed in Forced Fumbles, Sacks, and even a slight advantage on Tackles. But Reed is the definition of ‘Ball Hawk’ and that definitely makes him a sexy pick.

i guess what i mean is
he’s passed his prime in pass coverage.
still a great run blocker, pass rusher, tackler, etc.
not to mention all the things he does that arent in the boxscore, no one pumps up their team like Dawk. I wasn’t trying to say i’d rather have ed reed, cause i’d never trade dawk for anyone.

There can be no question, however, as to who looks more frightening on the field.

Dawkins’ black visor > Reed’s visorless helmet.

Poz X Reed X Dawkins
I think they are great and probable HoF, but they play very differently, I think Poz is the more aggressive, better tackler and run stopper, but YES he has issues covering BUT he is a SS, not a Free SAFETY. Dawkins is a good run stopper and good cover guy, but he is getting older, anyway played great, but was not the best Safety on the team(Mikell played great) and Reed is the ball-hawk, great coverage skills return man , always great after interception, BUT he is not on the same class of Dawkins and Poz on the running game! I think if we get the best qualities of each one, would make THE PERFECT SAFETY! I just think ED REED IS THE OVERRATED here
DOnt get me wrong, he is great, sure HoF, but he is not that good playing the run, easily blocked, doesnt escape from the OL like Dawkins and specially POZ!
I think anyone you choose would be a great choice, but dont think there is any difference(or huge) between them! maybe 28% -32for Dawkins, 30-34 for Polamalu and 32-36% for Reed would sound fair!

A Steeler fan that thinks Ed Reed is overrated?! I am shocked and appalled.

PS
I think Reed is the best of the 3. I just dont think he is that marvelous Safety! Ask Hines Ward, about pancake a safety? I Doubt Polamalu or Dawkins would fly like a little baby like Reed did!
I think he is overrated, because he is GREAT, future HoF, but he has flaws, but nobody discuss this, only those great interceptions! But when we talk about Dawkins and Poz, everybody says Bryan is getting slower, doesnt cover anymore, and Poz, isnt good at coverage! ITs true, but Reed is only great, if not wonderful at coverage!
