Dawkins on return to Eagles: 'That's the plan'

Heres the link for the article, but I will copy and paste the article here for everyone.

http://blogs.usatoday.com/thehuddle/2009/01/dawkins-on-retu.html

TAMPA -- Philadelphia safety Brian Dawkins, set to become a free agent, said today he expects to return to Eagles next season.

"That's the plan," Dawkins said. "Hopefully we'll get something done really soon."

Dawkins, a six-time Pro Bowler, appeared this morning as a nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award. With Vikings center Matt Birk and Cardinals QB Kurt Warner, represented by his wife Brenda, the candidates met with Payton's family.

Dawkins said it was "painful" to appear at the Super Bowl media center, just a few feet away from the Lombardi Trophy, after his team lost to Arizona in the NFC title game.

"This very well could have been us," Dawkins said. "There's only two teams that can say that, us and Baltimore. Because we were one game away."

Not like any of us doubted if he will be back, but its nice to see something in writing finally.

Glad to see that Dawk wants to come back, but I won’t be happy until the TEAM says they want him back. Really, I won’t be happy until I see him standing next to Joe Banner at a press conference announcing his new contract.

I hope they draft his replacement...

or someone on the current roster can step in (calling Quintin Demps.)

I love Dawkins when he is blitzing but he is a definite liability in coverage. They should be phasing him out.

Yes, I understand he made the pro bowl. So did Brett Favre.

We should probably start preparing for the worst.

I personally don’t think Dawk has more than one good season left in him. He’s going to be 36 next year and there’s not too many good safeties flying around at 36. God damn you time!

I’m not a real big fan of substitution either. I don’t like how Lynch, Roy Williams, etc get substituted out on obvious passing downs. IMO, you can either play or you can’t. If the coaches feel his time is up, then it’s time we co-retire Dawkins # as he and Andre “dirty” Waters should share the respect. It’s not going to be a happy day in Philadelphia when this happens but time gets everybody.

Yeah we can swap safeties.

You guys take Roy, we will take Dawkins. What kind of reception would Dawkins get if he came back to Philly with a star on his helmet?

your beyond retarded

if you think dawkins would play for the cowgirls…

good luck in the playoffs next year..
oh wait thats right

I would say its a slim chance but

if the Eagles aren’t offering him the money he wants hes going to have to go elsewhere. I don’t think it will happen either because of his age. Him and Hamlin don’t really fit as a tandem.

I don't know

He might officially be the 1st Cowboy not to get booed in Philadelphia history. I don’t see it happening though.

I guarantee you Demps is going to bust his frickin ass. He’s going to use the Larry Fitzgerald play as motivation and will never forget it.

That Larry Fitzgerald play would have made a young Brian Dawkins look bad.
I actually thought Demps was in decent shape given its tricky nature. One qualm I have with JJ’s defensive schemes is they so often wind up with a safety matched up against the opposing team’s #1 wideout.
How many times did it happen this year? I can remember one instance against Dallas which had many fans saying Dawk was washed up and needed to step aside for his younger replacement…
Another year in the system Demps’ll get better – he may never be Dawk, but you’re asking the kid to replace a future HOF’er…

I honestly dont get why people give demps so much shit for that play. anyone matched up one on one with Fitzgerald is going to get beat, much less on a gadget play…with a safety…who’s a rookie…

I don’t know if you’re referring to me, but I’m not giving him shit. Just for him to be in position to make a play is good. It’s a shame he got tripped up and labelled a goat for getting beat by the best receiver in football. I still think he thinks he should’ve made a play and will use it as motivation. I don’t understand how a competitor wouldn’t let it get to him.

hopefully Dawk is back, and hopefully JJ is back next year healthy enough to continue coaching him. because if we have to get a new defensive coordinator, that guy might not be smart enough to use our future hall of famer correctly.

I say Dawkins becomes our new D coordinator when JJ retires….

Just wishful thinking, I could imagine his intensity on the sidelines calling the blitzes

"Philly is a hot team now and they are playing well on defense, Donovan has managed the game well and I don't think there is any team out there ... I think they beat the only team out there that had a chance to beat them, and I don't think there is anybody out there that is going to beat them. I'm on their bandwagon and I'm picking Philly to win the whole thing." - Giants RB Brandon Jabobs

thinking of the eagles without JJ is just flatout depressing ,, and dawkins as well ,i would like to see dawkins back ,runyan back , i think akers has run his course , and ditch reggie brown for another reciever just take the money bite on brown , you guys probably blast me for this but i would take chad johnson as an eagle , ..and yes he had a shitty season but remember he said before the season started [ i dont want to be a bengal get rid of me please ] i dont see the comparison to -T.O

Well I won't blast you

But I’m pretty happy with the receivers we have. Once Curtis got healthy, and we start going with Curtis, Jackson, and Avant instead of just rotating them all in I think we did pretty well. I really like Celek, but I’d like to see us get another tight end. This is more of a need anyway, since LJ is as good as gone.

If you want to bring in a big name I’d much rather have Gonzales than Johnson. Scary what we could do with Gonzales.

The Eagles need a tight end that can block, Celek can’t and because he can’t he’s backup material. Problem this year is that LJ Smith is backup material, too. They need to draft a TE and there are several available this year – a TE who can block will help protect the aging tackles, at least one of whom will probably be back in 2009.

Regarding WR, I tend to agree with you that the Eagles have some good ones, especially with the improvement Avant made going over the middle this year. But they don’t have anyone the other team needs to game plan against defensively, what people are talking about when they say the Eagles don’t have a “true #1”. Those players are rare and the only way Jackson gets there is if he’s Steve Smith part 2: Dominant Undersized WR Boogaloo – an even rarer breed.

Before TE or WR though, they need to focus on the OL – Runyan and Thomas both need to be replaced and Andrews needs to get his issues under control. I would not mind seeing two OL in the first round, or trading a #1+ to move up to grab one of the elite OTs in this draft (Monroe, Oher, A. Smith, J. Smith.) Any of those 4 falling to the Eagles at 21 would be delicious.
