Jim Johnson being treated for skin cancer

Dave Spadaro on the Eagles website

Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Johnson will not take part in next weekend's Pro Bowl, the team disclosed on Thursday, as he is being treated for melanoma skin cancer in his spine. Johnson complained of back pain during the playoffs and was unable to coach from his normal sideline position, and on Monday, after extensive testing, he was informed that he has a bone tumor in his lower back.

"The original site was a skin cancer in 2001,"  head athletic Rick Burkholder told reporters. "Who knows where it tracked to from there, but his symptoms came from the spine. Now there are some other areas in his body (that have cancer), but I'm not going to get into where else some other stuff is. They will all be treated together. The main deal is his back right now. He's got a bone tumor down in his low back and that's what we have to attack right now."

Scary stuff for one of the great defensive coordinators in the game. Jim Johnson has been in Philadelphia a long time and has always been a fan favorite. We all wish him the best of luck!

Damnit

The fact that Burkholder mentioned that the cancer had spread is probably not a good sign. We’ve been so blessed with Johnson for such a long time, it’s horrible to think about him not being here. Good luck to him!

This is one of those things where it’s hard to know what to say.
Jim Johnson is my favorite Eagles coach of all time. Buddy Ryan, Dick Vermeil, Andy Reid, Bud Carson (1991 DC).
Jim, I wish you all the best.

Something that transcends rivalry crap..

from a Cowboy fan I wish him a speedy and full recovery. As I said on our site, I’d rather play against the best and I count him as one. Thoughts and prayers to him and his family.

Man,

I really can’t imagine the Eagles without JJ at this point. I’m not really set on a religious system at this point, but I wish him and his family well.

Lets all think positive(A brand new idea for me) about his situation and lets all envision him taking care of business in the 2009-2010 season next year.

I heart Jim Johnson, get well soon brother.

Eagles 1 in 2010!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I heart Carl Lewis!!!`

I always liked that guy.
I never knew why I liked him but now I do.

I am also boycotting this years Superbowl. Carl Lewis agrees. I like that.

I cannot watch a game that will result in the Superbowl championship when the my Eagles beat up both teams this year. Plus, Dmoney threw like 300 yds in like 1 quater!!!! I would be sick by the end of the 1st watching this debacle…

Go Carl Lewis!!! Who knew he was soo smart

Get well, JJ.

Thoughts and prayers for you and your family.

I wonder if I can bill Jeff Lurie and Peter Angelos for the years of therapy their teams are going to put me through.

Fight Hard JJ

This is a piece of news that hits very close to home for me. My Mom has been fighting an aggressive form of melanoma for three years. I know how hard a fight it is but I also know what type of fighter Jim Johnson is. Best wishes to Jim Johnson and his family during this difficult time. Fight hard coach.
