this is a simple poll
this is a simple poll. there are only two options, and though it might be a false presumption, i think we're entering a year in which it's quite possibly apt.
choice A: keep the core together for one more run. there's always a chance the next year will be THE year, but 4 NFC championship game losses, and one superbowl loss kind of make the point that if it hasn't happened yet, and the 4 best players are past their prime, it just might not happen.
this choice also comes with the potential degradation of key personnel, namely, donovan and westbrook.
choice 2: blow it up. trade donovan, lee toe, and gaither for the best package available, and start over with a new core.
this choice would cost a likely run after the season, but trading donovan for potentially three first round picks would quite possibly set the team up to make a run in the very near future. (three first round picks = 1 2009 first round pick, 1 2009 3rd round pick, to be packaged with their 2nd round pick to move into the back of the 1st round, and 1 conditional 2010 pick, which could be as high as the 1st round depending on performance incentives.

As long as Andy Reid is running this team we will never need to “blow up” the core of our team and start fresh.

what people don’t get is that Reid constantly “rebuilds” he is always bringing in fresh legs. and this fanpost is ridiculous.

Agree here
Our “Corps” is actually pretty young. Besides the Tackles and Safety, who else is old and needs to be replaced? Westbrook might need a #2 guy, but even McNabb has a lot of years left in him.

No need to pick one or the other
I don’t think we need to pick either of those options. Although I’m often critical of Reid, I think he has the team in a good position right now. Yes, many of the most elite players on the team (Dawkins, Runyan, Thomas, Westbrook and McNabb) are at a point where they probably only have 1 – 3 years of top level performance left in them, but there’s no need to blow up the core. We do have a lot of good young developing talent, and a boatload of draft picks this year. We can continue to play at a high level while developing the players from this year’s draft to be ready in 2-3 years. We just need to draft well and make sure we put the right pieces in place to rebuild the offensive line and develop a replacement for Westbrook. If management thinks Kiolb can eventually take over for Mcnabb, then we don’t need to worry about QB. I’m a little skeptical about Kolb, but he hasn’t had a chance yet We do have to remember that Westbrook and McNabb have both been spectacular at times during their careers and have covered up for a lot of offensive deficiencies. There were many years, when the eagles offense was largely dependent on McNabb’s scrambling ability to buy time and to rush for 400 yards or so a year, and there have been many games where Westbrook tok the game ove singlehandedly. So as we develop new players we have to look for really elite replacements for those two — or we have to upgrade the entire offense (a real full back, a star tight end, a monster offensive line, better receivers). In any case, we can remain in the hunt over the next few years while rebuilding.
