Eagles draft picks set

Unfortunately with our ousting from the playoffs(and the Panthers) our first round selections spots have been solidified.

We'll be picking at #21 and #28 (from Carolina).

That means the final haul for the trade from Carolina was the Eagles #19 overall pick in 2008 for the Panthers' #43 & #109 overall picks in 2008 and their #21 28 in 2009.

[Note by JasonB, 01/22/09 5:17 PM EST ] I've been corrected. The #21 is our pick and the #28 is the one from Carolina.

Yes. Our pick is the 21st. We still won out in that trade.

barely

At first I thought Carolina got hosed, but they got to the CG and did pretty well. Otah seemed like a worthy pick there.

No...

…they didn’t win a playoff game. Did you mean “we” got to the championship game?

Overall we got whoever our first rounder is this year, plus Laws and Demps all in exchange for Otah. I like it.

Actually I think the 4th round pick from Carolina was used on McGlynn

by JasonB on Jan 22, 2009 5:16 PM EST up reply actions

oh yeah, that's right.

They got to the divisional round, but ended up with a 12-4 record was it?

It depends if our first round pick is good though. If we get a bust + laws and demps I would have rather gotten Otah.

notable players taken after the pick we traded but

before our next pick

22-Felix Jones
23-Rashard Mendenhall
24-Chris Johnson
30-Dustin Keller
42-Eddie Royal
44-Matt Forte

and some WR taken in Round 2 after DeSean Jackson(#49) who the Eagles could have drafted instead
51-Malcolm Kelly
53-Limas Sweed
58-Dexter Jackson

DeSean looks like a excellent pick in Round 2 compared to the other WR that could have been Eagles

We wanted DeSean at 19

We got him at 49, so I agree – it all worked out pretty well.

I don’t know if this is true … if it is why did we take Laws before him? could have been team needs between the two picks but we will never know.

This is the rumor

Not sure if it’s true. Maybe we thought someone was going to take Laws before Jackson. Who knows.

by ajay on Jan 22, 2009 7:31 PM EST up reply actions

There was only 1 pick between laws and Jackson, and it was the Redskins. The Skins had already taken a WR in round 2, so they were not going to take jackson

by Clyde Simmons on Jan 23, 2009 8:46 AM EST up reply actions

Although, funny enough, the skins did take Kelly in the second round after they took Thomas. With Sanatana Moss there isn’t really a need for Jackson though.

by Clyde Simmons on Jan 23, 2009 8:50 AM EST up reply actions

The Jackson pick was probably a steal

Him and Royal should’ve been 1st rounders.

Genius Kiper

This guy has us taking Chris Wells with our first pick. This is a prime example of why nobody listens to you Mel. the eagles will not take a running back with their first pick. Wells is talented, but he is a bigger back who is not as versatile as the eagles like and he is often injured. This will not happen.

Eagles would draft a RB

Andy Reid would draft a RB, if there is one they feel is worthy (I’m thinking Moreno). The eagles have had one of the best backs in the NFL for the past 6 seasons or so. There was no need to draft a RB that early. Don’t mistake that as a sign they never will. But, with Westbrook likely to miss 2-4 games every year for the rest of his career and Buck possibly leaving, this seems like a good time if the right RB is available. I would rather get a solid two headed monster RB situation by taking a RB in the first round than drafting a TE. The difference btw a 1st round TE and a 3rd round TE is very small IMO.

I also don’t see the eagles giving two players first round money. My guess is that they’ll either combine the picks to trade up, trade on the pick for some picks later in the draft, or trade with a crappy team (like the panthers were suppose to be) and hope they score a high pick next year.
