Mock Draft Compilation

Star-divide

I've been a long-time BGN reader just getting around to making his first contribution to the board here.  I'm not a big college football fan, so I don't know as many of the college players that the Eagles can/will look at in the NFL Draft, so I'm here to ask for assistance and analysis from people who know more.

With help from WalterFootball.com, which has an ultimate link dump for mock drafts (http://www.walterfootball.com/draftdata.php), I went through and did a quick survey of who these mocks think the Eagles will draft in the first round (we'll assume for the sake of this discussion that the Birds keep both their picks).  I made no attempt to determine how good or bad the mock was; I'm relying on the "wisdom of crowds" mentality here.  My only criterion was that the mock had to have the Eagles picking in the right places (#21 and #28).  My survey included 27 total mock drafts.

Without further adieu, the list of players who appeared on more than one list, by number of appearances:

Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma State: 16 appearances

Eben Britton, OT, Arizona: 8 appearances

Duke Robinson, G, Oklahoma: 4 appearances

William Beatty, OT, Connecticut: 3 appearances

Phil Loadholt, OT, Oklahoma: 3 appearances

William Moore, S, Missouri: 3 appearances

Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia: 3 appearances

Jason Smith, OT, Baylor: 3 appearances

James Laurinaitis, ILB, Ohio State: 2 appearances

I just have a few questions about this group.  Is it really that obvious that the Eagles will seek a tight end?  I've read Pettigrew is a game-changer, but do the Birds feel they need to replace Brent Celek?

Will the Eagles take two offensive linemen in the first round (I can see why they would with Thomas and Runyan hitting free agency); if so, which two should I be hoping for?

I would like to think the Eagles will re-sign Brian Dawkins.  Do they draft Moore anyway, since Dawk is getting old, or is Dawkins that likely to leave?

I've seen Moreno play a lot, and he is a really talented back, and he'd be great to have alongside Brian Westbrook.  Is it a pipe dream to think Andy Reid would actually take him in the first round?

Anyway, hope this isn't a waste of my first FanPost.  Any feedback is appreciated.

Interesting research

A lot of the mock drafts are pure bullshit, but it is fun to see what the thinking of non-Eagles fans is. Reid loves to draft offensive linemen and there is a need, so it’s not surprising to see a lot of linemen on the lists. Personally, If Reid keeps both first round picks I expect one to be some sort of offensive lineman. I also agree that there would be a lot of logic in drafting a really good tight end like Pettigrew. I know everybody is excited about Celek because of the way he played in the playoffs, but it remains to be seen what he can do as a full time starter over an entire season, and his blocking is suspect. I’d be shocked if Reid took any running back in the first round. But I wouldn’t be surprised to see a defensive lineman taken early too. Of course it’s way too early to get a real sense. Free agent signings will dictate what positions need to be filled through the draft.

I don't think they need to "replace" Celek

I think that they would want to have a tight end that is a more consistent blocker and be able to use two tight ends in a lot of formations since they really don’t value/utilize the fullback all that much. There are some pretty good tight ends that would help out that could be available in the first two rounds.

Speaking of drafting offensive linemen, what do you think about drafting a center with one of the early picks? I don’t follow college football all that closely, but I’ve read that there a couple of good ones that are worthy of a late first round pick and could help immediately, like Alex Mack of Cal.

I agree if they take Pettigrew it would be because we need to replace LJ and Schobel and then pick up a Vet in FA (not that there is much out there … Des Clark maybe?)

Celek

Its not that Celek is bad or anything, as the first option it wont be tough to stop him
like for example, kevin curtis as a number 1 option is possible to stop
but imagine curtis with boldin or someone
it would be nearly impossible to stop curtis because ud HAVE to think about the other player
same with celek, if its celek and schobel, u cud put a safety on celek and a LB on schobell, and then ur good
but pettigrew and celek, then u gotta use 2 safeties, or really good linebackers, and that opens it up for everyone else too… so if celek is complemented by a K winslow or gonzalez or pettigrew, the oppurtunities are amazingg

dude....

If Knowshon is brought to Philly, we would have a great backfield. Moreno would be able to spell 36 and would mentor from him until Moreno is ready to step up to the #1 spot.

I’ve seen Moreno play a lot, and he is a really talented back, and he’d be great to have alongside Brian Westbrook. Is it a pipe dream to think Andy Reid would actually take him in the first round?

I hope it is not a pipedream. Moreno is our backfield with Westbrook would be amazing.

Who wants to play Leapfrog with Trent?

The problem with Moreno is that there is an outside shot that he doesn't get draft to about 23 or so

But can go nmber 11 just as well. Who knows

It all depends if Harvin and other players are drafted before him.

Oher may still be on the board, along with Knowshon. If that is the case, I got to make a move from 28 up to 24 to draft both Moreno and Oher. I would not draft Oher and leave Moreno on the board, one of these guys will not make it to 28.

As for drafting a running back

This could be the year that the Eagles draft a running back in the first round. Though, whoever they would draft would have to be a good blocker in passing situations and be able to catch the ball out of the backfield. That is one skill that Westbrook has that is way underrated – he is a very good blocker in passing situations. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen him pick up an extra pass rusher.

Offensive Line

I know the assumption is that the Eagles will spend a 1st round pick on an offensive lineman. Several things lead me to believe this may not happen.

1. I quoted an article as a FanShot that said they plan to move Herremans to LT. Now it’s just an “unnamed source” but Todd was a tackle in college.

2. Since 2006 they have drafted: Winston Justice, Max Jean-Gilles, Mike McGlynn, Mike Gibson, King Dunlap and they have Nick Cole who is a promising youngster. So if they move Herremans to LT, then you need a LG and a RT (assuming Thomas and Runyan are gone). I think they have been developing these young guys for a reason right? Are they going to overlook all of them and bring in another 1st round lineman?

but Todd was a tackle in college.

And his rookie year.

Are they going to overlook all of them and bring in another 1st round lineman?

No but if they lost Runyan and Thomas picking a stud OL would not be a bad idea even if he doesn’t play his first year.

Good point

But it’s a deep draft for the OL I’ve heard. Maybe you can get a guy later. We know the Eagles love developing small school products.

The strength and athleticism of OLman in the first line is very attractive. I could see us picking up a natural guard in the first, and bumping Herrmans to LT or starting Justice at RT. I am still not convinced Justice is a bust, just not prepared for his first game when he was put on the spot to play an unnatural position.

Andy has a thing for drafting Tackles and putting them at Guard

I think Tackle is our first pick.

I don’t think I have ever seen a Mock draft predict who the Eagles draft. If there is one thing I have learnt about the Eagles, its that they will target a player and move up or down to draft him in the right spot.

I looked up a 2006 mock draft just for fun…
http://www.sportznutz.com/nfl/draft/2006/mock_draft.htm

it has Bunkley going before the Eagles picked him, and has the Eagles picking Winston Justice in the first round….guess I was wrong lol

Interesting what they say about Justice:

Winston Justice is the quickest OT in a draft full of talented offensive linemen. Justice has started since he was a freshman on the Trojans offensive line to tell you how good he is.

This is too funny...

I love the rating system. 1 to 7.5 is a “can’t miss” prospect. Included in this is Matt Leinart and Vince Young. Can’t Miss I guess means “Can’t hit the broadside of a barn”

Don’t forget Reggie Bush, who had the highest marks of all time, and hasn’t done a whole helluva lot compared to his hype.
