The Off-Season Agenda (A Few Humble Suggestions)
Another season ends in heartbreak for our beloved team and its embittered fans...so what are we gonna do about it? Although the Eagles made a tremendous and unlikely run that ended one win short of the Super Bowl, it's obvious a few more pieces of the puzzle are needed to get us back over the hump. Many pieces are already in place; we just need to re-sign them.
Donovan McNabb takes top priority here; despite the fact that midway through the season I would stand outside and outyell the storms about how we needed to move on from him, Donovan pulled it together and earned his stripes (plus, from what we've seen of Kevin Kolb, making a change at this point would be disastrous). We start with him, and the rest of our needs can be dealt with accordingly. These needs, as I see them, are as follows (and in no particular order):
POWER RUNNING BACK
I'm sure you don't need to be reminded that a major Achilles' Heel for the offense this season was its difficulty on gaining ground in short-yardage situations. 3rd-and-1 on the goal line and we have trouble punching it in? We need a big power back that can double as a battering ram. Correll Buckhalter (who is also a FA) outshines Brian Westbrook here, but he still isn't powerful enough to move the pile by himself. This is a role that I believe can be filled through the draft. Shonn Greene of Iowa is the kind of between-the-tackles runner we could use, and is projected as a second-round steal. The free agent market has the ultimate power back in Brandon Jacobs, but the Giants re-signing him is practically a foregone conclusion. Even if it wasn't, he'll command too much money. The Giants' Derrick Ward is also available, but he's more in the Westbrook mold. Jacobs is certainly tempting (and is the kind of smashmouth juggernaut that Philly would love), but the bulk of the Eagles' off-season dollars are best spent elsewhere. The draft is the answer here.
NO. 1 WIDE RECEIVER
There it is again. Perhaps the most-oft-repeated phrase when it comes to talking about the Eagles' needs. If yesterday's game proved anything, it's that a team is best equipped to win when it has a player that can take over a game and practically win it by himself. Larry Fitzgerald is that kind of player. His stats from yesterday: 9 catches, 152 yards, 3 touchdowns. Imagine what Donovan could do with that kind of talent. The FA market is the way to go here, because the draft is not deep at WR. Michael Crabtree of Texas Tech, Percy Harvin of Florida, and Jeremy Maclin of Missouri are the top 3 prospects, and all of them could be gone by the time the Eagles pick. Plus, if I know Andy Reid, he won't draft a WR up front two years in a row, and I don't blame him. We need to use our draft picks at other positions. Free agent TJ Houshmandzadeh of Cincinnati is our best option here. He wants out of an organization with a clueless coach and a front office that seems intent on running its team into the ground. He's generally considered to be the best number-two receiver in the NFL, and he could easily develop into a number one in Philly. So, hypothetically, if we sign him, our receiving corps could look something like this: 1. Houshmandzadeh, 2. DeSean Jackson, 3. Kevin Curtis, with Jason Avant and Hank Baskett (a FA) in reserve. Andy will have a choice to make in keeping either Reggie Brown or Greg Lewis. Brown is obviously in disfavor, as he's barely been on the field. Lewis might have sealed his fate with that disgraceful drop of a perfect pass from Donovan deep in Cardinals territory. Either way, Baskett should be retained for his height and the effort he gives, and we should give serious thought to bringing TJ on board. His talent and toughness would give Donovan a serious weapon, as well as more options. Anquan Boldin could be traded for as well...did anyone see him and the Cardinals' offensive coordinator going at it yesterday? He's clearly not happy in Arizona's system, and a guy of his caliber would be a welcome addition in Andy's offense.
GAME-CHANGING TIGHT END
This is a position that one could argue does not need to be made; Brent Celek has proven that he is a good TE and that he deserves a starting spot. His blocking is an issue, though. It remains to be seen what the Eagles plan to do here, but just in case Celek hasn't completely won them over, here's some possibilities: Kellen Winslow is a name that has been brought up repeatedly, as he obviously wants out of Cleveland. His reputation as a locker-room headache could put Andy off, however. His talent is undeniable, but he needs to get his ego and temper under control. As for the draft, the Eagles could spend one of their two first-round picks on Brandon Pettigrew of Oklahoma State, or even Chase Coffman of Missouri, if either of them falls that far. Coffman would certainly be a second-round steal. This is a curious situation for the Eagles; LJ Smith is all but gone, and Celek has filled in nicely. But is Celek the kind of tight end that can take his game and the Eagles' offense to the next level? It will be interesting to watch whether Andy will wait to see how Celek handles being a full-time starter, or if he bites the bullet and drafts a future one. His interest in Tony Gonzalez earlier this season denotes his desire to have an elite TE on his roster, but Celek has come a long way since then.
OFFENSIVE TACKLES OF THE FUTURE
Before anyone calls for my head on a pike, let me first say we have to re-sign both Tra Thomas and Jon Runyan. These old warhorses still have fight in them, and both (especially Runyan) will play until they drop. But their age is starting to show (injuries and Thomas' slowed reaction), and I think it prudent to see about a new OT now, to prepare for the future. There's been talk that once either Runyan or Thomas goes, Shawn Andrews could be moved to OT. I would not be adverse to this move, as the Eagles have players (Max Jean-Gilles, Nick Cole) that have shown they can play guard in Andrews' absence. Andy will almost certainly look to the draft for a future OT. He could even trade one of his two first-round picks to nab someone truly elite at this position. Michael Oher of Mississippi, Andre Smith of Alabama, Phil Loadholt of Oklahoma, Eugene Monroe of Virginia, Jeff Smith of Baylor, Ciron Black of LSU, and Russell Okung of Oklahoma State are all names that could show up on Andy's draft board. This is a draft so deep at OT that Andy could take any one of the guys above and still wind up with a potential future Pro Bowler. Right now, the smart money is on Andy picking an OT in the draft.
FUTURE FREE SAFETY
We'll re-sign Dawk to make him a career Eagle, and I hate to even think about someone else replacing him, but I have to be realistic and come to grips with the fact that it will have to happen eventually. Quintin Mikell is a future Pro Bowler at SS, so he's locked in. Quintin Demps is simply not ready. The one guy in a safety-deprived draft I wanted, Taylor Mays of Southern Cal, has said he will return for another season as a Trojan. He would basically have been the draft's entire ball game at that position, so don't look for us to draft one, at least in higher rounds. A replacement from lower rounds is unlikely but possible. Signing a free agent is even more unlikely, because the safeties available are either not good enough or are too old (Rodney Harrison, Darren Sharper). Dawk will still be our starting FS, but a replacement must be considered sooner rather than later, because it will take some time to find anyone who could potentially fill Weapon X's shoes. This may wait until next year.
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
The Eagles may want to add an elite pass-rusher to complement Trent Cole. Julius Peppers, who has publicly stated that he wants to leave Carolina, is an unstoppable force coming into the prime of his career. If we had someone like him, our defense would rival Baltimore's. He'll command a lot of money, but he's a sure thing, and Andy would make this defense scary good by signing him.
What about a new kicker? We all knew David Akers was on the downslope of his career, but come on, he misses a field goal and an extra point, and he boots the ball out of bounds on a kickoff...on the same day...in a dome?! He had a great game in New York a week ago, but he's not the automatic point machine he once was. He was nothing short of a liability yesterday, and Andy was visibly upset with him after the botched kickoff. He may have nailed his own coffin shut with his poor performance. I think it's one more season for him, but the Eagles will sign a replacement this off-season.
Well, these are just some things to consider as we prepare for another long, hard off-season pondering what could have been. We have a good nucleus in place, and with the right moves, we can definitely compete for the NFC crown again next year. Pretty soon we'll be back here discussing the draft, so get some mock drafts together and we'll compare. It was a good season, gents, keep your heads up.

good post
I know getting solid OT’s with our first round picks (thanks again Carolina) is going to be Reid’s main priority, but i agree with you, getting a power running back that can punch it in at the goal line would make my my day.
As far as getting Houzamacallit in free agency, hasn’t he had a past of having a bad attitude? Yes, he is by far the best option on the market, but that’s due to lack of other options. When Shaun McDonald is the second best option for WR, the pool is lookin pretty shallow, and I wouldnt jump into it too quickly.

the problem is that there are no real glaring holes on our roster, its not like we can say “oh if we sign so and so well definitely win a title”. the Eagles biggest need is consistency, and I dont think you can draft or sign consistency

I agree with this post more than any other on this thread.
The roster is Super Bowl-worthy if it can stay healthy, intact and finish games. The Eagles almost never get their butts kicked, they lose from being inconsistent or not being able to finish drives/games.

great post
What do you think about the DE’s? We constantly are told that we need small DE’s so we can get sacks however I remember only a few games where our front four got serious pressure. They also dont have a ton of sacks…. so maybe go a little bigger?
by yourmomsacowboysfan on Jan 19, 2009 2:42 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I think...
…this is a very big problem. I’ve been ringing this bell for a while now. This is what we got from our front four this year:
Trent Cole: 9 sacks
Mike Patterson: 1/2 sack
Brodrick Bunkley: 2 sacks
Juqua Parker: 5 sacks (only 1/2 a sack in the last ten games)
Now, granted a front four should be judged by more than just sacks – after all, they did a terrific job against the run. But we drafted guys like Patterson and Bunkley because we wanted to collapse the pocket and get pressure up the middle. That hasn’t happened. Laws might be a penetrating DT but he’s an unknown at this point.
As for the DEs…Cole is great against the run and is good for 8-12 sacks a year, but without a stud opposite him he can be double- or even triple-teamed. Parker always gets around 5 sacks, but generally breaks down over the course of the year. Abiamiri might be a stud next year, but I don’t know. Can we count on his development?
I think the team needs to either draft another DE or look to free agency. Peppers is probably out of the question because of his price tag and also because he wants to play in a 3-4. Terrell Suggs is obviously a monster, and could be available because Baltimore has a lot of free agents (Lewis, Landry, Scott, etc.) But again, he’d be expensive.
We get a lot of sacks every year, but we blitz a lot too. Having one more solid pass rusher might enable us to get more pressure from our front four and either drop more into coverage, or at least be more effective when we blitz.

DEs and RBs
I’m a big Jaqua Thomas/Parker fan but he absolutely disappeared down the stretch. I was happy with what I saw from Clemons once he was on the field consistently and started getting a feel for his role. And Abiramiri has shown promise. Last time we went out and signed a big time DE (Kearse) it did not work out so well. Our DEs are definitely undersized but it seems like Johnson prefers speed/agility over size/strength because of the way he like to rotate his front four. Because we are fairly deep right now I do not see them looking to upgrade at that position.
I could not agree more about needing a power running back though. Westbrook broke on to the scene when he had guys like Duce and Levens who could take care of the heavy stuff and allow him to be what he truly is… a third down back. To say he handled the load of being a feature back fine in 06 and 07 would be an extreme understatement, but he is almost 30 years old and the injuries are slowing him down. I think anyone would agree that he was not himself throughout the playoffs (and much of the season for that matter). His cuts just weren’t there. I saw him tackled one-on-one in open space more times this year than in his entire career. I’m certain he was more injured than he ever let on and I while I love his “warrior” mentality, I have to say I would have preferred a 100% Buckhalter over a 75% Westbrook. We need a bruiser (Buck is a hard runner, but not a bruiser) to take some of the blows off BDub and allow Marty and Andy to get creative with his role again. That said, unfortunately there are very few FA running backs that fit this mold (obviously Jacobs will not leave NY). Cedric Benson? Beanie Wells? Ron Dayne? I know those don’t sound good AT ALL, but it is something we desperately need.
And I’m fine with Curtis, Jackson, and Avant as our top 3 WRs for next year.

Disagree about the TE though
you can get a good blocking TE anywhere for the goalline situations. Having one who can catch is a very, very rare and valuable thing indeed, and Celek will be a star next year, maybe an all-pro. This is not a need for us.
My main question is how healthy is Westbrook? Or rather, how injured is he? He obviously had some kind of setback in December, and was invisible for most of the playoffs. If he’s gong to need a major operation, we will need a great RB, and need him fast. Will we franchise Buck? I can see it if West is not ok.
Otherwise, our 2 1st round picks are low enough so we will have to let the draft determine where we upgrade the most. I doubt a starting LT will be there, but maybe we can find a safety, or LB, or a guard. Drafting a WR in the 1st is kind of a crapshoot, but we may take a shot at it, to complement Jackson, who will be a great #2, but only a good to poor #1, IMHO.

I generally disagree with everything you said
You got the trouble spots sorted but I think you need different answers.
RB: I’m not looking for a power back, I think its time to draft Westbrook’s replacement. I love the guy but how many games did he have where he was at half speed… 5, 6? He’s not getting any younger and the Eagles don’t exactly have a rookie friendly offense.
WR: I’d like to see the Eagles draft another wide out, maybe in the 3rd or 4th round. I want to see Baskett resigned because I like hit height and blocking ability. Don’t go after a premier FA.
TE: The Eagles need an upgrade but forget Winslow. And I thought that Pettigrew was returning to school.
OT: OK, I agree with the idea of drafting new blood but I’m not sold on bringing back both Runyan and Thomas.
Safety: I love Dawk but he’s near the end. I’d only re-sign him under the condition that he’s going to have to fight for a starting role next year and I’d draft a safety to challenge him.
Peppers is an intriguing idea.

Size
Westbrook – 5’10, 203 lbs
Moreno – 5’10, 210 lbs
Wells – 6’1, 237 lbs
If we are going to draft a running back, I’d rather get the bigger of the two guys so that we’re not still dropping back to pass on 3rd and 1 two years from now. But personally I’m not a big fan of either.

When folks talk about a power back around here they like to talk about a guy for 3rd & 1. I think the Eagles need to expand their search for someone who’d be good on 1st & 10.

I know I mentioned 3rd and 1 but I am with you 100%. I want a guy that can get us 4 to 5 yards on first down consistently. That to me is more important than 3rd down.

the problem is your typical powerback isnt a good pass-catcher and andy reid wont let a running back that cant catch within 500 yards of our starting offense.

Peppers and "Whosyamama"
Peppers would be a great addition at left end. We need somone to take the pressure off of our other D lineman. When you have a player that is that disruptive, they get double teamed which opens up holes for the blitz and leaves our D lineman one on one with their line. T.J. would be a nice addition but i dont think its fair to bench curtis for a player that looks like a gamble by signing them. I wish we had a number one player like fitzgerald but there is no one out there like that right now. We do not need another TE either. Celek is playing great and after LJ takes a hike, he will be great as a full time starter. We do need something on offense though. We need a player that can give us a spark. Westbrook and McNabb cant do it alone. We have two 1st round picks though so a trade isnt out of the question. I wont be surprised if andy trades out of both our first round picks though haha.

Heres a pipe dream: what if the Rams are looking to completely rip their team up and start over and they are willing to dump Stephen Jackson. I’d gladly give up one of those first rounders for that. a bruising runner who can also catch the ball. it would bring a new dynamic to our offense without really taking anything away. i know it wont happen, but niether is crabtree.
On a serious note though, I think they let both tackles walk. Herremans/Andrews can both play right tackle and they will probably draft a left tackle.
random thought, Anyone think the reason the Eagles refused to give Buck the ball this year was so they could keep his numbers down and resign him for peanuts?
by njh3293 on Jan 19, 2009 11:30 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
There’s no way they’d put that ahead of winning. They used Buck as much as they thought appropriate. We didn’t run because we couldn’t, even when we stuck with it. When we get Andrews back, I think we’re going to see an even better offense than the one that set franchise records this year.

resign Dawk, Runyan, and Baskett. Sign Jordan Gross and Brandon Jacobs. Make a trade for Anquan Boldin using one of the 1’s we have. dump Gaither, G Lewis, Reggie Brown, Tra Thomas, L. Sheppard. Use other draft picks on DE, Safety, and TE, and OL. Prep Andrews to move to Right Tackle in future.

“This isn’t Madden.”
If you are referring to my ideas. it is very well possible what i proposed. Dawk and Runyan both made a combined 7.7million this year. They will not be signed for that much. Tra Thomas, Sheppard, and LJ Smith accounted for a combined 11.9 million. Losing those players and the savings from above would be what it would take to sign Jacobs and Gross (both very do-able as reportedly both of their current teams are going to be reluctant to give big contracts). I belive AZ would take a 1 for Boldin. We then have a line of Runyan, Andrews Herremans and Gross. I would let Nick cole compete with J Jackson for the center spot. you then draft with lower picks a safety, TE, and interior OL to develop and a DE to add to the rotation.

I wouldn't get my hopes up for a big splash ...
… I guess the Birds always make an effort to go after big names, but seeing none, they will probably play it close to the vest and tweak. That’s what they usually do.
After reading everything above, here are some spots I think we might discuss some more:
Legitimate Fullback
I know we brought in Lawton and Jed Collins and whoever last year, and Eckel seemed useful for a little while … I wouldn’t mind if they drafted or traded for a bonafide blocker who could carry on 3rd-and-1. Granted, dude wouldn’t be in on a lot of formations, but I bet they think they can do better than Klecko.
Blocking TE
Celek is clearly going to be the man in the passing game. Only way LJ Smith comes back is if nobody wants him. He’ll get a job elsewhere, so we need a guy who can set the edge. No idea if Schoebel can be a No. 2 TE.
Backup RB
Buckhalter looked good enough in limited action that he might get a nibble this time as a free agent. Maybe somewhere like Denver where no back is really entrenched in the the No. 1 role, or Cleveland, where Jamal Lewis is old. Just making those up off top, esp. since they have new coaches, they might not be partial to the guys in place. Anyway, if Buck is gone, we are hurting for a No. 2. Maybe Tony Hunt comes to camp, but him and Lo Booker? Oh boy.
I like the idea of keeping Gaither. He can backup all three spots if someone goes out with a season-ender, and if he has any heart, he might compete and get his job back from Jordan. They loved the idea of three athletic, big LBs at one point in time.
I think we’re set at DE with Cole, Parker, Clemons, Howard and Abiamiri. Bunk, Patterson and Laws might get a new teammate at DT somewhere in the draft.
We’re definitely going to get some O-linemen. I wonder if Winston Justice is really useless … I know he had that horrible game, I hope when people are not penciling him in for the future they are going on more than just that.
The WRs are OK. Baskett is not going to get any love in free agency and will re-sign, Im guessing.
The gig was eventually up for Reno Mahe. I’m thinking it has to end at some point for Greg Lewis too.
Sorry, got a little off topic there :)

Guys who are on the fence ...
We mostly agree that Dawk, Runyan and Tra Thomas are three key guys whose futures have to be determined before the Eagles can really make any decisions.
Safe to assume Lito and LJ will be in the NFL next year, but not with the Eagles.
Here are guys who took a step backward this year (or just failed to take one forward) and their futures with the team need to be evaluated:
Reggie Brown — I think he’s got some football left in him. I’d keep him over Greg Lewis, one off year is a little early to plain give up on a guy who had been promising to this point.
Winston Justice — If they thought he had any kind of future as a tackle, it would be nice to hear someone say it. Most of us agree Herremans or Andrews would move out to tackle before we saw Justice get a starting spot.
Omar Gaither — discussed already
Lito Sheppard — It’s obvious how this is going to end, although let me just throw this out there: Eagles are getting offered even less in trade than they were last year for him. He is still under contract. Eagles don’t make a move. He’s still a great guy to have in reserve if one of the top CBs were lost to a long-term injury.
Lorenzo Booker — Mostly just took up a roster spot this year, but the Eagles must like him for a reason.
Who am I forgetting/missing?
