Dawkins issues apology

Dawkins, you have nothing to apologize for.

"I want to apologize to the fans," the Pro Bowl safety said after today's 32-25 loss to the Arizona Cardinals in the NFC championship game. "We really thought this was it. We went out and gave what we could, but we came up short. I want to apologize to them."

Dawkins was asked why he felt the need to say he was sorry to the fans.

"They were so great on our run," he said. "It took a lot more belief than just in the locker room for us to be where we were. There were some fans out there believing in us, helping us along the way."

That's why we love the guy. He feels the same pain we do.

"My first and foremost goal is to win a Super Bowl. I also set goals in terms of having a type of year to make the Pro Bowl. If I'm going to the Pro Bowl, I know I'm making plays for the team." Brian Dawkins

We should be proud

Thanks Eagles for ANOTHER great run! Yesterday was a crushing loss and as a life long Eagles fan I was devastated. But this year was different. There was so much passion and I felt proud to be a fan. Proud of all the things that were accomplished. And thanks Dawkins for instilling that passion in your teammates. It was a thrill to watch and a thrill up to the end.

You could certainly tell who the veterans were after game yesterday, the guys who think this could have been their last shot. Runyan, Dawk, and McNabb looked miserable (Donovan, per his usual, was keeping his head up but was clearly taking it hard). The young guys were smiling and jumping around, congratulating the Cardinals with big hugs and high fives.

Not true

The guys I saw jumping around were Buckhalter and Samuel.

Among the young guys, Celek and Bunkley were really pissed. The lockerroom looked like a funeral when they showed pictures of it.

I love Dawk

Did anyone notice Demps was in there a lot of the plays though?

yeah,

what was with that. Was in Mikells spot or X?

Who wants to play Leapfrog with Trent?

they have packages where they will substitute a linebacker or corner for another safety so they have 3 safeties lining up deep.

At least Demps did his job

Demps was the only safety who didn’t fall for the trick play to Fitzgerald and stayed back to try to make the tackle.

I will agree that

The defense has to apologize for that game. They didn’t show up. They cost us ANOTHER championship game. I know everyone “hates” negativity but it’s Pitt/Arizona, where’s the positives? We’re 1-4 in CG’s w/ 0 rings. I’ll be positive again in the future, just not right now when we just got beat by the ARIZONA CARDINALS IN THE CG!!!!! They didn’t even have Jake the Snake either.

Nothing to apologize for?

Jason, didn’t you watch Dawkins bounce off Fitzgerald in the first half and blow the screen to Hightower on 3rd and goal that sealed the game by getting blocked out of the play? Wasn’t that Dawkins who watched Fitzgerald streak by him on the trick play touchdown and didn’t think anything of it? Ummm … hello? You are playing safety. Your job is to not let ANYONE get behind you. And you give up a patented Wisenhunt trick play that the Steelers ran just three years ago.

Dawkins played his usual small NFC Championship Game. But he never takes criticism for it from the media and fans, even when he is publicly critical of himself. He’d be the first to tell you that he wasn’t good enough though.

by Andrew B on Jan 19, 2009 10:13 AM EST reply actions

He really wasn’t playing safety on some of those plays. On the Hightower screen he was blocked.

Agree and Disagree

Andrew B, I agree and disagree with your comments. Dawkins was out of position on the trick play, but as Jason noted, he was playing more in a linebacker role than coverage. He did not have over the top responsibility on that play as far as I can tell. He did fail to get an effective jam. And yes, he missed the tackle on that first TD. So did Samuel and so did Mikell. As far as the screen goes, I disagree. The fist guy that gets there has a responsibility to take on a blocker. Essentially, his primary responsibility in that circumstance is to eliminate a blocker from the play. He did that. The real culprit on that play was Steward Bradley. Bradley over pursued and was never blocked.

In terms of coming up small in other conference championship games—show me. He seem to remember a crucial interception of a now-jailed QB.

Jason, nice summary of the game itself. I highlighted many of the same points in my own analysis: http://heardinthecheapseats.com/

Dawkins in Big Games

Dawkins and Brown were both trailing in pursuit of Fitzgerald on the trick play. They realized once he ran by them what was happening.

The game against Atlanta was the only Conference Championship game which Dawkins showed up to – one interception, one forced fumble. Did you notice that we won that game too with an offense scoring three TD’s and 2 FG’s, just like Sunday? Dawkins was MIA in 2003 had just 6 tackles in 2002 and 2001 NFC Championship games (like 2008), and 5 tackles in the Super Bowl.

You can’t win big games if the playmaker at the heart of your defense doesn’t show up to make big plays.

The recurring theme in big games for the Eagles has not been McNabb not showing up, because he played well enough to win in 2001, 2004 (both Conference Championship and Super Bowl), and 2008, but Dawkins coming up small and the defense following behind their leader.

If they did, which I didn't really see on any key plays...

They made up for it in other ways.

Wilson had two sacks and a forced fumble.

Polamalu had an interception returned for a TD.

Dawkins, the safety with the most sacks, interceptions, and forced fumbles combined in NFL history had …. nothing.

Dawkins - King of the SPEAR!!

The only thing he should apologize for is being a dirty player. Has Brian Dawkins ever tackled anyone without leading with his helmet??? I guess Fitzgerald was too fast enough for the Dawkins cheap shot.

He’s the king of the spear. Between his dirty play and Mcnabb’s bad persona, they got what they deserved. The only way it could have been better is if the Eagles lost another Super Bowl. Too bad they couldn’t even get to that point. This team will be dismantled and won’t see another playoff for many years.

Great Run

Congrats to you guys from a Giant’s Fan. The eagles had a great run and played a horrific 1st half on Offense and Defense that put you in too big a hole against a lesser team.

Trust me, I know how it sucks not playing next week . All in all, I think the Eagles overachieved again with developing players, a great defense and solid QB play on occasion. I hate McNabb because he always makes plays against us, but there is something missing with his QB play. I don’t know what it is: a lack of focus for 60 mins, Not enough receivers, play-calling issues, etc… I dont know. But for the Eagles to take the next step he needs to either figure it out or you guys may have to move along to another QB.

BTW Celek looks like a nice TE for years to come.

Clarify my comments

I said, the team needs to figure the issue out with him or move on. I never said, get a new QB. Nothing I said was ridiculous; open-end and master of the obvious, but not ridiculous.

Again, great run.

I’m glad Dawkins apologized, now we just need everyone else on the defensive side of the football to come out and apologize for only showing up for 1 quarter, and giving the game away by not being being to stop Tim Hightower, twice.

Dawkins just keeps on showing his class. He has played huge this year after he was doubted severely at the beginning of the year. I hope he gets another shot here.

by LeonSA on Jan 19, 2009 10:59 AM EST reply actions

Umm...

While I agree this is a classy move and he’s a nice guy, have you ever even watched him play? He’s really good, but the last way I’d classify his play on the field is classy? He’s done more helmet to helmet hits than anyone I’ve ever seen.

Just another year at home watching other teams in the Superbowl…lol

by Black Tues. on Jan 19, 2009 12:06 PM EST reply actions

The apology is nice. Winning would have been better.

I argued last week against JD1 that the Eagles (specifically McNabb) in that case HAD won big games.

But still, when you’re 1-4 in 5 conference championships, and no superbowl rings to show, you’ve written your own legacy. It’s really hard for me to have any excitement or confidence about next year when they’ve been so close so many times and not one it all ONCE.

I’m not necessarily talking about Dawkins here, because I get the sense that he cares as much as the fans and that it will take him as long to get over this as it will me. And that’s part of the reason we love him so much.

I wonder if I can bill Jeff Lurie and Peter Angelos for the years of therapy their teams are going to put me through.
