I hope this wakes the management up to the fact that we need a #1 WR

because if this game wasn't a bigger indication, i dont know what was

we NEED ONE, i dont know what could be more of a punch in the face than this game.

if Larry Fitzgerald was on our team instead of the cards and nothing else was changed, we would've won that game 56-9

its seriously that big of a difference

Although Larry Fitz didn't do much in the second half, how much damage would the Cardinals have done in the first half if it wasnt for him? not much.

We NEED this, get Houshmanzadeh, trade for Chad Johnson, trade for Calvin Johnson, what ever it takes.

our defense got handled pretty hard too.

no one could’ve expected our defense getting owned that bad.

exactly!

our defense got owned by a #1 WR. Imagine what having one of our own would do to other defenses.

our defense was only owned by FITZ

you take fitz away from this game and the cards wouldnt have done shit..

LARRY FITZGERALD WON THIS GAME ON HIS OWN
and he deserves a lot of credit for that… ive always loved him as a player but wow, that guy is good

DeSean

DeSean looked and played like a #1…gotta get him the ball more.

I think DeSean could be a #1 next year, really impresses me.

Perhaps talks of a trade for Boldin should be revived?

PLAYOFFS?!

re-post

This CHAMPIONSHIP loss comes down to one thing: Larry Fitzgerald was the best player on the field. Warner played lights out but….Fitzgerald is the MVP of their postseason. Think about it. He’s been OFF THE CHARTS. I know Warner gets all the credit and Aikman and the media are in bed with him….but FITZGERALD deserves the CREDIT.

I’d say 3 of the 1,000 TDs Warner has thrown this postseason have been ‘prayers’ – and you know what? Fitz has gone up and made PLAYS.

If Warner was throwing up ‘Prayers’ to Hank Baskett, he probably would be out of the league or have committed suicide.

Oh yea, that’s Donovan McNabb.

But , instead, no one cares about his accuracy on those throws because Fitz catches EVERYTHING.

Here’s to Larry Fitzgerald. The best WR in the NFL. And here’s to his Super Bowl MVP trophy.

by damonmoore43 on Jan 18, 2009 8:20 PM EST reply actions

Why?

The offense scored 25 points, suffered a missed field goal and extra point and gave up and extra point to try for two.

You have to win the game when you score that many points.

This should wake up management to the need to further tweak the defense, not the offense. There were too many disgraceful losses this year where the offense came up big and the defense just hid. Dallas 41, Eagles 37, Giants 36, Eagles 31, Cardinals 32, Eagles 25. You just can’t lose games where you score that many points, and good defenses do not give up 30+ points. The Eagles win those first two divisional games and they are playing the Cardinals at home as the #2 seed, and undoubtedly beating them and going to the Super Bowl.

dont kid yourself

I agree with most to all of what you say Andrew
(plus i share a first name with you so we should be buds)

but you know that the Defense we have is great, Larry fitz just played out of his mind

The D def played like shit

but the offense more often times than not played worse than the D throughout the season.

Need better linebacking

I think the team needs some tweaking on both sides of the ball. Yeah, the defense cost us some games, but so did the offense — Redskins, Bears, Bengals and Ravens games — and we won the Steelers game despite a pathetic offensive performance. Everybody gets caught up in the hype about our young linebackers — and I agree that Bradley looks like he’s developing into a very good player, but teams that have beaten the eagles this year have done it by exploiting our linebackers either with passes into areas where our backers are in coverage or by running through gaps vacated by the outside linebackers. Maybe these guys will continue to improve, but I’d be looking for some kind of linebacker that can handle a tight end or a running back in pass coverage or maybe a backer that has more of a knack for big plays like sacks or ints. Also as great as Dawkins was down the strectch, he’s still a liability in coverage and Demps may or may not be the answer.

On offense, the O-line needs to be shored up. Thomas was awful yesterday, and he and Runyan are playing on fumes. Who knows if Andrews will ever return to his top form. Another option in the backfield wouldn’t hurt either. The team is close, but with a lot of key players aging, they ought to be looking to do something aggressive to win now.

broken record

eagles need a number # WR right? the Eagles like most teams lack a true ELITE WR but so do most teams. does BAL or PIT have a true #1? The Eagles need to drop Reggie Brown who cannot get on the field and look to upgrade over GLewis and Baskett but many teams would love a Djack/Curtis combo. Now a pass catching TE could open the field up but LJ has been horrible and Celek not ready for prime time yet. They need more weapons, like a young RB to compliment #36 but enough of this lack of #1 WR talk. Trading for a established WR is too costly in terms of $$$ and draft picks. The OL is more of a pressing need, Runyan and Thomas may be gone and Andrews is hardly a lock to come back healthy and ready to play.

by themacdaddy on Jan 18, 2009 9:30 PM EST reply actions

"does BAL or PIT have a true #1?"

Yes…

There’s this guy named Hines Ward, he’s pretty good, santonio Holmes isnt bad either

and dont scoff at Derrick Mason

by Manoovi on Jan 18, 2009 9:33 PM EST up reply actions

Hines Ward is a possession receiver.

Santonio Holmes was outgained by Hines Ward and is not a #1.

by Andrew B on Jan 18, 2009 10:55 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly

I’m saying that there are few true ELITE WRs out there (Fitzgerald, Calvin Johnson, Andre Johnson, Steve Smith, Burress). Ward and Mason are outstanding veteran possession type WRs and Holmes is a playmaker like DJack. Most teams have a combo of Ward/Holmes, Clayton/Mason, and Curtis/DJackson. They Eagles, like most teams, have a good and potentially great 1-2 WR but not a true elite WR. Prior to TO, I agree that the Birds lacked quality WRs after all we were subjected to Pinkston, Thrash, Small, Johnson, etc. But Curtis and Jackson are going to be just fine in the WR department and until last year Reggie Brown was more than serviceable but what a huge step backwards this year. So there are few of these type of WRs out there and if available, will be too costly to trade for. They Birds have other holes to fill on O and dreaming about Ocho Stinko, Boldin, etc., is just not realistic.

by themacdaddy on Jan 18, 2009 10:25 PM EST reply actions

bullshit

big time qbs need big time wrs – damn.

i’d take hines ward and santonio holme over curtis and djack in a heartbeat.

but that’s irrelevant. the ravens and steelers dont need good wrs. their defense wins EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME. THEIR OFFENSE DOESNT DO SHIT.

THE EAGLES D is fantastic….lock down at times. but they’re not the ravens or steelers. the eagles are an offensive first team – with no running game. they need wrs.

the steelers and ravens don’t pass the ball 100% of the time…genius.

by damonmoore43 on Jan 18, 2009 10:29 PM EST reply actions

warner wouldnt do shit with curtis, d jack and baskett...he'd commit suicide

he said it in the post game – “i’ve been fortunate to be surrounded by great players” – warner aint making no super bowl with d jack, curtis and baskett – jason avant – lj smith – are you f’n kiddin me?

don needs talent. you think donovan would lose 4 NFC Championship games if he had LARRY FUCKIN FITZGERALD.?

laughing my ass off right now…

It's the Madden-syndrome

Everyone has been playing too much madden and hasn’t looked at what is possible in the real world.

by AusEagle on Jan 18, 2009 11:29 PM EST up reply actions

i'm not looking over off Djax at all

He’s going to be great.
hell he already is great.

but we need a REDZONE threat
that is something that desean jackson is not, because he is simply too small

our Offense is one of the, if not THE, best offense between the 20s.

but it stops there.. we need that go-to guy in the redzone ala fitz, moss, burress, TO (as much as I hate it), 85 when he was good, calvin J, Andre J, Housh, theres a lot

by Manoovi on Jan 18, 2009 11:36 PM EST up reply actions

First of all, a very long, long time reader, first time poster. This is a great site and a great virtual community.

While I like the WRs we have right now, I believe we need a legitimate #1 WR for these reasons:

1. It will make life much easier for everybody on offense. Running game will open up and it will be easier for Curtis and DeSean to get open.

2. A great WR will be there to bail out #5 whenever he has his bad games. I’m sure some of those inaccurate throws today would’ve been caught by a stud like Andre Johnson. These are the little differences that determine who wins and who loses. It’s true that the current WRs we have have had great games. However at this point, it’s pretty clear to me that they are not good enough to win a Super Bowl.

3. Like Manoovi said, our offense is prolific at moving the ball between the red zones but once we get inside the 20, we have a hard time getting 7 points instead of 3. With a weak running game and a little above average receivers, we will continue to struggle.

Our offense is great and will continue to produce even without a legitimate #1 WR. But they will fold in pressure situations and will not be able to get the job done. Our defense is great also. It is not elite but it is good enough to win the Super Bowl. With more experience under their belt, I think we have a solid defense. So all in all, I would like to see the Eagles really go after Housh or get creative and trade for a great WR this off-season Getting a good blocking TE (Pettigrew in the draft) and thinking about rebuilding the o-line would also be a priority.

This season was crazy and emotionally draining but I’m pretty happy about it. Of course, I’m very disappointed at what happened today but there are a lot of good things to build on.
