Is anyone really scared about playing the Cardinals?
I for one have been telling Eagles fans to stay level headed in our playoff victory over we smoked Dallas. We have laid eggs against worse teams against the Vikings who are one dimensional on offense. Our offense wasn't particually good in our win, but they did enough to win. Then we had to face the Giants who are very balanced on both sides of the ball. We had to go into Giants stadium after their players had a good week of rest and healing. We were going to face a team with a defense as formidable as our and an offense that had a QB that generally plays pretty well against us. And... we kicked their ass!
Now everyone seems a little bit hesitant to write-off the Cardinals. I personally think this Arizona team is a fluke.
a) They beat ATL, who wasn't anything great this year. Good, but not great. If anything they were a nice Cinderella story. Their rookie QB looked like a rookie in that game. They beat CAR yes, but I think Jake Delhomme gave them the game more than anything. Six turnovers?
b) Our defensive line is a lot better than their offensive line. If one team sucks at rushing the ball more than we do it's the Arizona Cardinals. Even against Carolina Edgerin James was only getting 2 yard a pop. We do have a stout running defense. That means we'll have plenty of 2nd and 3rd and longs. Jim Johnson is going to pin our defense's ears back at Kurt Warner.
c) Speaking of which, Kurt is a great QB but he's not very mobile and doesn't throw well he's constantly under pressure. We saw that last game where he forced a couple of INTs when we faced them Thanksgiving.
d)Speaking of running, their defense isn't particaully good against the run. I think our offense will have a much easier time running the ball and getting into more managle plays than in the past two weeks.
Okay here's something crazy. Thoughout the year we were ranked #1 or #2 on the DVOA ratings. I thought those rankings were bull shit and not very accurate especially since we were only 9-6-1...but...Maybe those rankings are on to something
Here's the final 2008 DVOA Rankings:
http://www.footballoutsiders.com/dvoa-ratings/2008/final-2008-dvoa-ratings
The playoff round I DVOA is here (we are ranked 2nd behind BAL):
http://www.footballoutsiders.com/dvoa-ratings/2009/2009-postseason-dvoa-i
I wonder if we'll surpass them after that game.

I think the Cards have gotten better since we played them
Although we have, too. It’s going to be a tough game — definitely not a cake walk.
I am glad it is in Phoenix — I am sort of thinking about driving out for the game (I am in LA)

this is noway a gimmie or a push over but
we are so much tougher than this team just think we have the #3 defense in the league right now #3 . and they play like it i think we just have to handle biz against them this is one team like u said that we are built to destroy . our front 7 will get pressure thats one thing thats for sure warner will give us some chances for some picks …
and fitzgerald and boldin are beast but look once again we have to lockdown corner and 2 saftys that will knock u straight the hell out .

any time a team is in the NFC championship game, at some point, they did something right. you can’t look past a team, or you’ll be watching them in the super bowl. i hope the eagles are scared right now, because they need to retain their focus. we know what this team is capable of…both good and bad. if they get cocky, we know what happens. I have faith they’ll win, but I hope they aren’t writing off the cardinals as some people are. 2 games away from immortality is not the time to get cocky.

totally agree. What I remember most about the game on Thanksgiving was how the receivers couldn’t catch anything. I doubt we will have that kind of luck against them again. I also wonder if JJ will double cover Fitzgerald, if so, that might leave the running game with more options. Just some things in my head this week as we get pumped up for the game on Sunday.

i was thinking the same thing about doubling Fitz. But I don’t know if that leaves us totally naked against the run.
I think (here’s a stretch) that Johnson will mix it up. Sometimes doubling Fitz, sometimes loading up to get pressure on Kurt or throwing run blitzes at them if they have some success with Edge.

The Cards defense seems to be playing with a chip on their shoulder since everyone wrote them off coming into the playoffs. They’re kind of like the Eagles…they’re hungry, feel disrespected and can score a TON of points.
That being said, our defense is playing better than anyone (save USC’s…sigh(PSU fan)…but I digress…) and I think we can slow them down. Next stop…TAMPA!!!

Another thing that resmbles the Eagles is the Kurt warner was benched in the Patriots game (I think) and now hes playing like he has something to prove also.
"Philly is a hot team now and they are playing well on defense, Donovan has managed the game well and I don't think there is any team out there ... I think they beat the only team out there that had a chance to beat them, and I don't think there is anybody out there that is going to beat them. I'm on their bandwagon and I'm picking Philly to win the whole thing." - Giants RB Brandon Jabobs

I doubt that McNabb is going to throw 5 interceptions and lose 2 fumbles the way that Delhomme did. Any team that does that—in a playoff game or otherwise—doesn’t deserve to win. We won’t do that. Their running game isn’t great, and it won’t matter; their receivers are amazing, and they will. It won’t be easy, but we should be able to scheme and limit their effectiveness. Again, what’s the score without 7 turnovers by the Panthers? My guess is that it’s nowhere near as lopsided. . . . .

When...
…your record in recent NFC title games is 1-3, you should be a little scared. I think this team is special and will win, but I’m not writing anyone off. Arizona looks completely different this team around. It will be tough. We overlooked Tampa and the Panthers and we paid for it.
There’s one thing I’m certain about: the PLAYERS will not overlook the Cardinals.

I was going to talk about this in the coming week...
But I’m scared to face anyone. I hope this team has a healthy fear of everyone. We can’t take anything for granted.
I want everyone to think back to Tampa. Everyone on earth had us winning that game. We owned Tampa up to that point… and we lost that NFCCG. The Cards will be tough and I won’t be happy until I see those final seconds tick off.

Everyone has fair points
I agree, the PLAYERS can’t look past the Cardinals. However, that team is the biggest fluke if I ever saw one. They are not nearly as good as their past two games have indicated.
Tampa had a good defense, Arizona doesn’t
We were injured all in the Carolina game. Our defense is healthy and playing possessed.
The Ram’s game? Well.. We were supposed to lose that one even though we played them tough.

You have to respect the opponent ...
… and the Cardinals have some dangerous offensive talent. But I would say I expect the Eagles to win (as opposed to this week being a toss-up) and a loss would be an incredible disappointment.
This reminds me of the ’04 playoff games when I thought the Eagles were clearly better than the Falcons and Vikes, but I was so scarred by the previous NFCCGs I was still nervous.
To answer the question, they don’t scare me. Their offense can be scary, but our strength is defense. And I think this is the rare game where our offense can really get off against a defense.
I would’ve been more scared by Carolina. The style the Steelers and Ravens play, where the Birds can be roughed into a day of continuous three-and-outs, that worries me more than anything the Cardinals do.
But I take NOTHING for granted as an Eagles fan ;)

careful...weve been here before
im confident but not looking past the cards. weve been here before…championship game against a team we match up really well with that we thrashed in the regular season…tampa anyone? We are a far more physical team then arizona and we should be able to beat them into a pulp. However, Kurt Warner has hurt us in the past. he has a quick release and he knows how to play against a blitzing defense. if we come to play well beat them handily. if we come out flat on defense it will be 21-0 before we even know it. confident, but not cocky.

Ya know
I really dont want to hear anything about the other 4 NFC championship games this week. Yes, there are still a bunch of players on the team that were here when that all happened…
but this is not the same team, or the same circumstances.
I feel differently about this too… all of the games (except the first one) i was super nervous, and terrified of the “what if we lose” factor.
I have none of those feelings at this point. I will tell you that this season ranks above 2004 for me. Even without a win sunday, it still will. We didnt win it all in 2004 or i’d see it differently.
This is way more a TEAM than the 04 squad was. They play with more fire… and quite frankly i LOVE the back against the wall mantra.
Let’s go EAGLES!
2 more wins baby!

there's nothing wrong with the fans overlooking the cardinals...
it has no effect on the game…
but if the players overlook the cards then that could be bad. I doubt the coaches/veterans will let any players overlook them, they have a very explosive offense

but I think Jake Delhomme gave them the game more than anything. Six turnovers?
I think defense forces turnovers Jake only had 12 INTs all year and then 5 in this game. I know he had 4 against Oakland but IMO Oakland has a pretty decent secondary.
The Cards are a good team, but we know how to beat them and that’s what we need to do. But we can’t see this as an easy game the Cards. Let’s remember they were down 21-0 really fast against us and didn’t even attempt to run, we can only hope for the same outcome.
