EAGLES VS. JAGUARS, SUPER BOWL XLIII

I'm making this pick because these are two teams from each conference that have the talent to win and win big, but still fly under a lot of radars. Many experts around the league have said that both the Jags and the Iggles are potentially dangerous teams for the conference favorites (like the Cowgirls in the NFC and the Patriots in the AFC), especially if they get hot and pick up momentum toward the end of the season and bring that head of steam with them into the playoffs. Let's look at what makes our sleeping-giant Iggles so lethal and Bowl-worthy:
EAGLES:
1) Donovan McNabb is back, 100% healthy, and by all accounts he's looking like his old self again. That means more mobility in the pocket, better throwing decisions, and the ability to scramble if the situation calls for it. When he's able to combine all 3 of these elements into his game, there's not a whole lot opposing defenses can do about it.
2) Brian Westbrook is at last content with his contract situation after the hefty extension he received, which means he can now focus completely on what he does best: shred defenses and leave them in his wake. A healthy, happy B-West plus a healthy, determined McNabb equals a whooooole bunch of scores.
3) The secondary is one of the best in the league, if not the best, with 3 Pro-Bowl caliber cornerbacks, a legend and future HOFer at free safety, and a rising talent at strong safety. Asante Samuel showed us early on that he plans on living up to every penny his contract gets him, by "mossing" Randy Moss on the Eagles' first defensive play in their preseason win over the Pats. Sheldon Brown seems to be eager to come out and prove to everyone that he just might be the best corner on the team. Even though Lito Sheppard's not happy with his situation, trade offers have not been up to snuff, so plan on seeing him step his game up so that other teams will be falling over themselves to sign him in the offseason (this is most likely his last season in Eagle green). Dawk, of course, is Dawk, but this time he's more prepared than he was last season (last year he missed most of camp dealing with difficult family issues), and he's healthier. He's out to prove last year was a fluke and that he's still big, bad Weapon X. Quintin Mikell is a good young player, and I expect he will make an impact in every game. This is a unit that could very well have the Birds leading the league in takeaways.
4) The linebackers are a strong, BIG, and young unit that the team is very excited about. Omar Gaither has tremendous speed and flies to the point of attack. Chris Gocong is a smart, powerful, and instinctive 'backer who could emerge as a star this season. But the focus of this group is on newly anointed MLB Stewart Bradley. His build has many comparing him to Urlacher; let's hope his play does the same. The team has high hopes for him, and he's looked good early on. But hey, even if he doesn't work out, I wouldn't at all mind seeing The Headbussa, Joe Mays, step in and start laying the lumber on Marion Barber and Clinton Portis.
5) Returns at last, returns at last, Thank God Almighty, returns at last! After putting up with the likes of Reno Mahe, Ryan Moats, and Jeremy Bloom, we now have two bona fide punt/kick returners. PR DeSean Jackson is a serious threat to go all the way every time he touches the ball. KR Quintin Demps is hungry to prove he deserved to go higher in the draft, and to make other teams sorry they overlooked him. These two can be game-breakers, and I think we'll see some serious points out of them this year. All told, the special teams could be a catalyst in getting the Birds to the Bowl...and winning it.
Now, the Jags have the best RB tandem in the league in Fred Taylor and emerging superstar Maurice Jones-Drew. QB David Garrard rose to prominence last season as one of the most efficient passers in the NFL, throwing single-digit interceptions in the process. Their defensive line is a stalwart unit, and their secondary cannot be overlooked. Head coach Jack Del Rio has his Jags poised on the cusp of taking the conference, and they'd be on everyone's radar if they played in any division other than the AFC South (with the Colts, Texans, and Titans). This year, I think, is the year that they stop playing bridesmaids to the Colts and win the AFC title. It's early, so we can't tell what'll happen yet. But it would be one hell of a game, wouldn't it?

Excellent analysis of the birds, but you need a COMPARATIVE analysis of the other contenders in the NFC to convince me the birds will make it.
