I knew that would happen. Sometimes I think Jim Johnson should change it up on 3rd occasionally. That’s the second time they knew the blitz was coming and threw an effective screen.

Call me a jerk

but Schobell lost that game for us. Buck would have been in if Schobell’s man didn’t grab him around the neck. He literally didn’t even make contact with the dude he was supposed to block.

Schobel was supposed to block down it looked like

So he was following his assignment. A lot of things lost the game, but I don’t think Schobel was it. Knowing the Eagles, I’m shocked they didn’t pass on 2nd or 3rd down. And Tony Hunt’s run was really bad, he had some room, but cut outside? Fullbacks don’t cut outside at the 1.

1. Schoebel – useless – can’t catch, can’t block
2. Booker – this guy is a fraud
3. Reggie Who?
4. DSJ – hate to put him on the list, but there it is
5. Reid – how about a bootleg or QB sneak?

It's not the end of the world.

They’re 2-2. But our D looks like one of the best units in the league. DJack continues to look like a player. McNabb is looking great. And despite injuries to our best offensive player, best olineman and top WR, we were an inch (and maybe that was a TD – I still think that overhead view showed the tip cross the plane) from beating a Bears team that played out of its ass. With Westbrook, this came would have been a blowout.

You are correct

According to the standings that’s true. But the season is 1/4 over. The Eagles have a good shot to win four straight and end 6-2 after week 9.

Gocong gave up one of those TDs

And the other came after DJacks fumble.

by phillynyc on Sep 28, 2008 11:51 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No

Gocong was forced to cover a tight end sprinting 20 yards down the field. Where was the safety? We do have two safeties on the field at all times, right? Are the safeties no longer expected to cover the endzone?

by Andrew B on Sep 28, 2008 11:54 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

A TE, that's the point?

It wasn’t a WR. It was a TE, and Gocong – like he does a lot – didn’t read pass right away and got caught looking into the backfield and was burned.

by phillynyc on Sep 28, 2008 11:58 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Nope

Gocong was running to cover the pass the entire play. Mikell was the one who spent the first two seconds backpedalling slowly while watching the backfield, and he was the safety lined up on that side of the field. God only knows what Dawkins was thinking, as there were no good TV shots of him. However, Samuel had his man covered all the way, and Brown didn’t have a man to cover after he broke off the route for a short in, so it makes you wonder what he was doing giving help to the two corners instead of helping cover two tight ends.

by Andrew B on Sep 29, 2008 12:51 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I’d like to see Gocong do a better job, but honestly that’s a bad mismatch. A safety should be there.

by JasonB on Sep 29, 2008 12:01 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It was probably a well designed play

that drew the safeties, or maybe it was a blitz, I don’t remember. Still, Gocong has physical skills but he’s pretty atrocious at reading pass vs. run and he’s not that great at shedding blocks either.

by phillynyc on Sep 29, 2008 12:04 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The Gocong TD

The Bears lined up

WR WR OLINE TE TE
………………RB QB

Samuel and Brown were on the left with Gaither. Dawkins was deep middle. Mikell was halfway up covering the inside Tight End while Gocong had the outside Tight End. The Bears only sent the two wideouts and two tight ends on patterns, while the Eagles only rushed 4, so 7 were covering 4.

Dawkins just sat in the middle of the endzone and failed to make a decision as to which side he would cover. He ended up jogging slowly towards Olsen. Mikell failed to get deep once his man turned a short out which Bradley covered from the MIKE position. Brown didnt go deep when his man turned a short in which Gaither covered from the WILL.

At the end of the play, Brown is standing still covering no one, Dawkins is jogging around the middle of the end zone, having failed to pick up on the idea of giving deep help to a safety and a SAM linebacker covering two tight ends alone. Mikell is trailing Olsen badly.

How many defenses call for the SAM to cover a man with no safety help for 20 yards? I’d think it would be zero.

by Andrew B on Sep 29, 2008 12:44 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yes it is

You cant give up 24 points in the NFL and expect to win. There is no way Kyle Fucking Orton should go about having a career day while getting sacked 4 times, intercepted twice, and fumbling the ball away twice. Three 20+ yard touchdown passes is damn well the fault of the secondary. Where was the coverage?

by Andrew B on Sep 28, 2008 11:51 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

But honestly

Why not challenge the first touchdown or the last 4th down stop?

by ajay on Sep 28, 2008 11:46 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I've been wondering that too

From that top angle it looked like a TD. Why doesn’t the NFL institute an automatic review of any TD on non-TD call. And can a ref really see a ball in the middle of the pile and whether it crosses an invisible plane? The game obviously never should have come down to this. This should have been a blowout.

by phillynyc on Sep 28, 2008 11:56 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Sheldon Brown was right

“What’s the point of getting turnovers if you don’t do anything with the ball?”

Hate to say it,

but without Westbrook our offense just isn’t the same. He gets in the end zone on those goal line plays.

Yeah. I just didn’t expect us to be completely inept without Westbrook.

Defense?

The Bears got walked all over all night long. They gave up 370 yards, about 90 more than the Eagles. The Eagles constantly moved the ball down the field, but they started from too far back.

andy reid on the lack of a QB sneak:

“well… my QB was a little sore… I didnt want to put him in that position… THIS WEEK”
ummmmmm you played him for the entire game and let him throw 41 passes… WTF ANDY???

Man.

You shouldn’t lose a game if you lead in the turnover category.

i mean WTF

they were beggin to get blown out consistently giving us good field posistion. Just all around terrible. Andrews, Curtis, Westbrook, LJ…….get healthy.

Field position?

The Eagles started drives on the 20, 26, 20, 13, 33, CHI 41, 23, 4, 4, 20, CHI 35, CHI 28, 16, CHI 31, 24, 39. They had 16 drives, and only 5 were in good field position, while 10 were inside their own 26. Thats mostly terrible field position.

Chicago started just one drive on the 20, one of the 3, and one on the 1. The rest of their drives were from 27 yards or further out. They started 10 drives from their 35 or further out. They lost about 80-100 yards on changes of possession.

Night Games

Eagles are something like 2-14 in Night Games since losing the Super Bowl. Im really starting to hate night games.

Red Zone Offense

That’s what it is to me more than anything.

Not just the last drive where they got zero but the two in the second half where they kicked field goals.

Way too close to the goal line way too many times with way too few TDs.

Blame whatever else you want, I’m sticking with that.
