Face-To-Face: Eagles Defense, Bears Offense
We're heading into week 4 of the season, and the Eagles will travel to the Windy City to face the Chicago Bears. Let's look at the matchup, Bears offense, Eagles defense.
In order for the Bears offense to be successful, they need run the football successfully. The responsibility falls on the shoulders of their offensive line, and their running backs. With just having played 3 games this season the Bears have run for 456 yards on 105 attempts (4.3 yards/carry average). This would indicate that the offensive line is doing a good job opening holes for the running. Of the 105 attempts, rookie Matt Forte has taken 73 of them, and gained 304 yards on the ground, and is 4th overall in rushing. In addition Forte has caught 13 passes for 105 yards. Behind Forte, the Bears have former Detroit Lion Kevin Jones, Garrett Wolfe, and Adrian Peterson. Kevin Jones could be a good compliment to Forte, provided that his foot has healed after suffering a Liz Frank fracture. Garrett Wolfe is a change of pace back, but is undersized.
If the Bears are able to rush for 100 yards or more per game, they will make Kyle Orton's job of managing the football game much easier. The Bears aren't relying on Kyle Orton to win football games. They are relying on him no to lose them. In order for Kyle to manage the game effectively he needs his offensive line to protect him, the running game to be productive, and his receivers to get open. The offensive line needs to give him time to make his reads. If the running game is working that will alleviate some of the pass rush, and setup up the play action pass. The key for Orton will be time. The more time he has, the better decision he should be able to make.
The Bears' wide receiving corps isn't star studded by any stretch of the imagination. They don't have a great deal of size. Their biggest receiver is 10 year veteran Marty Booker (6'0", 205lbs). The Bears are converting Devin Hester from defensive back to receiver, but is a work in progress. Not too mention he's injured as well. Brandon Lloyd is their leading receiver, but has been a castoff from 2 other teams for under performance. But the Bears do have two solid tight ends in Desmond Clark, and Greg Olsen. Orton has made a lot of check downs, and thrown to the back. Forte is 2nd on the team with 13 receptions.
The keys for the Bears are to continue to run the football, protect Kyle Orton, play turnover free football, and make plays. The biggest thing for the Bears right now is their pass protection. Orton needs enough time to make a good decision, and to avoid throwing errors.
On the other side of the ball is the Eagles defense, and there is no indication that this matchup doesn't favor the Eagles. The keys for the Eagles will be to stop the run, and put pressure on the quarterback.
The Eagles are doing everything right against the run. Through three games Jim Johnson's boys have on average only given up 45.7 yards on the ground. The Eagles defensive line is undersized compared when matched up against the Bears offensive line, but we held the Cowboys to 73 rushing yards, and their offensive line dwarfs that of the Bears. The Eagles front four will need to tie up their blockers, and allow the linebackers to to get to the ball carrier as they have been doing so far.
If the Eagles are able to put a stranglehold on the Bears running game, you can expect Jim Johnson to open the floodgates, and blitz Kyle Orton unmercifully. I can't imagine Lovie Smith abandoning the running to game, and rely on Orton to sling the ball all over the field. The Eagles will need to get pressure on Orton in passing situations. If the Eagles can put pressure on Orton, then our secondary should have a field day picking off errant throws. With our secondary being as good as it is, expect to see some coverage sacks this week.
The Eagles defense has a clear advantage here over the Bears offense. I don't think that we'll get 9 sacks this week, but we will get some. Expect to see more turnovers than in previous weeks. My only concern will be: If Matt Forte is in man coverage with one of our linebackers. We have seen them get burned.

Bear's running game
is good only relative to their passing game. And the Eagles offense is really, really good. The problem with a team which relys on strong defense and a solid running game is that if you fall behind by more than 1 TD, it becomes really, really hard to keep running. I can see the Birds flying out to a 10 point halftime lead, then destroying Orton and maybe having a pick-6 or two! Add in a far superior special teams for the Eagles (assuming a Hestor-less Bears) and the whole field position struggle will be one sided.
Barring a series of unlikely events all breaking Chicago’s way, this game will be all Eagles, all the time. Birds by 16!

I'm saying Birds by 20.
the Bears running game is a top 10 team. The passing game is atrocious at best. The Bears have run 198 plays so far this season, and 105 of them were running plays, and the average just under 5 yards a carry. That’s not too shabby at all.
You are totally right that if they get behind early they will be forced to chane their game plan, but I expect that our defense was going to do that anyways. Let’s hope for a couple 2nd half pick-6s.

One thing that concerns me this week is
the fact that if Westbrook doesn’t play, you can expect a ton of blitz from Chi. This will disrupt the Eagles timing spread offense.
We need to establish the screen early and exploit the blitz, LJ may need to show up this week. And Buck will need to step up with the middle running game.
I don’t see the Eagles spreading the ball as much as they like. If I were Andy, I would establish quick screens and go max protect when needed. (Eagles never go maxprotect). If you maxprotect we must run the ball effectively. If we can be balanced with big plays while working the clock. Chicago won’t be able to blitz.

Chicago Blitz
I’m not sure if they will blitz. Da’ Bears play a tampa 2 don’t they? The tampa 2 doesn’t do a whole lot of blitzing. It’s more of coverage schemes. The pressure that they get comes from their defensive line. I agree that it would be to L.J.’s benefit to make an appearence.

The only way I can see us losing this game is if the Bears have huge days on special teams or defense. Their offense is not going to score on our defense.

Yes
He’s got a rib injury, and probably won’t be active for the game.

i'm not confident about this game
this is the type of team that has always given the eagles fits. this year, the eagles are a different team, but in the past, a good ground game and special teams has been what knocked the team off.
even without devin hester, nathan vasher was a pretty damn good return man before. and i’m not convinced that hester won’t play.
THIS game is not gonna be easy.

I agree
Things that concern me
1) McNabb’s health – If he’s sore and not healthy he could throw like shit… Kind of like the 2nd half of the Pitt game
2) Westbrook If Westbrook doesn’t play we could be looking at more blitzing and focus on shutting down the WRs
3) The Bears have a good D.
We will not blow out the Bears IMO. It might be another ugly game like 13-6.

Overestimating the Bears
You guys are overestimating the Bears.
50 of their 403 yards are a single busted play against the Colts, who are notoriously atrocious in defending the run.
Their best runs are off left end, where Trent Cole will be waiting to greet them, and up the middle, where our two stud tackles and Stew Bradley will be waiting.
Orton is getting sacked once every 12 drop backs after facing three middle of the pack d-lines. I’m sure the Eagles can improve upon that for him since they are the #1 defense at sacking QB’s after the drubbing of Rothelisberger.
Chicago has three offensive touchdowns on the year between Orton and Forte. McNabb could have that many at halftime throwing to our #3, 4, 5, and 6 wideouts.
This is a bad team we will be playing, and this game should not be close.

NEVER Underestimate though
this is still a decent Bears team that may look at this game as a proving point game , kinda like the steelers game for the eagles last week nobody was a 100% sure of this team till that game. now the bears may look at this game as one were everyone says we’ll lose so why not go for broke and see what they can do. what’s the worse to happen they lose, well everyone thought that anyway so lets change up our normal gameplan and through the eagles a curve. thats what scares me the most about this game if Lovie throughs caution to the wind and says F- it, we know Andy likes to do all his gameplannig for the week and doesn’t like to make adjustments during the game( eh-hem Giants game last year) and if Lovie comes up with a new twist that Big Red doesn’t forsee in his crystal ball the bears may squeck one out. so i’m only about 65% sure the Eagles will win.

let the stranglehold begin
Jim Johnson , open the floodgates, and blitz Kyle Orton unmercifully.-the Eagles defense leads the NFL in both sacks with 13 and run defense, allowing a paltry 45 yards per game.-They seem to do everything well," said offensive coordinator Ron Turner. "They had nine [sacks] the other night, but it looked like about 50 watching that film. come on D GO EAGLES – on the road to victory
