Notables On the Cutting Room Floor
Moats, Hunt, Wilson, Young, Studebaker, Togafau, Reagor, von Oelhoffen, Cole, Paschal, Graham, Gibson, Childress
Either Davis or Lawton can do what little Tony Hunt did last year. Both are way higher up the depth chart then him (he's not even on it), and both can also play Fullback. I just get the sense that even if Davis wins the FB starting job, Lawton will get kept as a special teams/fullback/big running back role, as the Eagles always keep 5 running backs/fullbacks, either in a 4/1 or 3/2 split. Its entirely possible one of the wideouts like Lewis or Avant gets traded or cut and an additional D or O lineman or linebacker or DB gets added to the roster, a bubble guy like Cole, Graham, Reagor, or Studebaker. Season ending injuries to anyone on the list above also opens the door up to the guys on the cutting room floor. Outstanding play from a UFA like Collins, McBride, Roland, and a causal attitude from someone who thought they had a spot locked up (like Jabar Gaffney a couple of years ago) could also make a bottom of the roster shift.
The inactive 8 with the above roster would initially be 1 QB, 1 RB/FB, 1 WR, 1 OL, 1 OL or TE, 1 LB, 1 DE, 1 S.

Sorry, gotta Disagree
Only one FB makes team bro

I also disagree with other numbers
I am not sure that Mike Gibson doesn’t make the team as Guard. Eagles usually carry 10 offensive linement. Nick Cole is done
They will likely carry 5 DT, 5 LBs
I also don’t see Dorenbos making the team, I see the Eagles Keep Lawton mainly because he longsnaps.

Dorenbos makes the team ...
you don’t mess up Akers, Sav, Dorenbos team … they have a had a full year together now and should improve on last year.

Agree
No way they keep 2 FB… I also disagree (not that it really matters) but Booker’s gonna be the 2 back.
Also, i wouldnt be super shocked if Studebaker makes the team.
Lastly, do we normally keep 3 TE’s?

Abiamiri won't be on IR
How many D-Linemen have you watched in a “playing cast”?
If he doesn’t have the pins out of there in a couple of weeks, that’d be surprising and then he should be good to go. It’s not like he blew out his knee.
by cavortingEagle on Aug 7, 2008 3:19 PM EDT 0 recs
If Abiamiri isn't IR,
Then who do you cut? I hear Howard has been playing lights out all camp. Then you would have to invent an injury for Bryan Smith just to keep him on the roster. I doubt they cut Parker, my guess is that Abiamiri will get IR’d just to make space for Howard.

that also “balances” this roster.
25 O and 25 D
GLew would also have to be considered a long shot. His only real redeeming quality is his speed. He does have some rapport with the second string QBs, but I’d say he’s on his way out.

I'm willing to bet
Considine or Reed (probably reed) lose there job to Demps and we only keep 4 safeties and 5 Corners (Nick Graham?)... unless you assume that Demps can play Corner if needed … which isn’t really out of the question, I think I read he was taking snaps there because he seems to like to catch the ball.

Whodie
that is how i feel exactly. i actualy feel that Demps could end up taking over the safty spot from Q by the end of the season.

Opening Day Rosters from the Past
The Eagles kept 2 Fullbacks in 2004 (Ritchie and Tapeh, then Parry and Tapeh), and only 2 Running Backs (Westbrook, Mahe) – Levens was added after opening day. The only reason to not keep Davis and Lawton is if Hunt shows up in the pre-season games and plays better than either of them. Since Hunt is not
The Eagles have generally kept 3 Tight Ends under Reid, but one of them, Bartrum, was also the Long Snapper. 10 OL on the team is a recent thing where Reid wanted to protect a player who was otherwise Practice Squad material from claims on waivers. Dunlap was a candidate for that this year, but he is apparently doing surprisingly well and is currently a 2nd teamer, and thus ahead of Gibson and Young and probably Cole, who can be replaced by McGlynn and Klecko in his back-up Center/short yardage Fullback/special teams role.
If you keep Abiamiri in the hope he can play in October, someone else must be cut. Who? They’ve never kept 6 D-ends. Either someone else gets injured, or Howard gets cut, because they won’t cut Smith that quickly. Who’s more valuable to your team? An injured Abiamiri or an apprently revived Howard? Since you can, why not put off making the decision on who to keep at D-End until next year? I also don’t see only 5 linebackers making the roster. The Eagles have always had 6 or 7. You need some warm bodies for special teams roles.
4 CB and 5 S is based on Demps swinging between the two if needed. Reed is a better player than Graham.
Here’s some opening day Eagles rosters.
2002 – 3 QB, 4 RB, 1 FB, 6 WR, 4 TE (1 LS), 9 OL, 4 DE, 3 DT, 8 LB, 9 DB, 2 K/P
2003 – 3 QB, 4 RB, 1 FB, 6 WR, 3 TE (1 LS), 9 OL, 4 DE, 5 DT, 7 LB, 9 DB, 2 K/P
2004 – 3 QB, 2 RB, 2 FB, 5 WR, 3 TE (1 LS), 9 OL, 5 DE, 5 DT, 6 LB, 10 DB, 2 K/P
2005 – 3 QB, 4 RB, 1 FB, 5 WR, 3 TE (1 LS), 9 OL, 4 DE, 5 DT, 7 LB, 10 DB, 2 K/P
2006 – 3 QB, 5 RB, 1 FB, 5 WR, 3 TE (1 LS), 10 OL, 5 DE, 5 DT, 6 LB, 8 DB, 2 K/P
2007 – 3 QB, 3 RB, 1 FB, 5 WR, 3 TE, 1 LS, 10 OL, 5 DE, 5 DT, 6 LB, 9 DB, 2 K/P
I’m projecting for 2008
2008 – 3 QB, 3 RB, 2 FB, 6 WR, 3 TE, 1 LS, 9 OL, 5 DE, 4 DT, 6 LB, 9 DB, 2 K/P

thing is
you kind of have to look at Darren Howard as that Nickel DT (though as I mentioned in the comments on my “What’s up? Been a while” fanpost yesterday he may have lost too much weight).
Oh yeah and he’s the back up longsnapper…

No FBs and you cut Hunt??? N Cole is probably going to get the axe … and we are not keeping 3 SS … Considine or Reed is out … Mikel is IMO better and a leader on Special Teams as well as in the locker room.

Ooops, I overlooked fb
I do think they keep 5 safeties though. We did last year, remember that this is our teams weakness and Dawkins is getting older.
I like Considine and feel that he is miss used. He is not a strong Safety. He is a free safety and shouldn’t have to stick his nose in the run. He covers great ground and disrupts the pass well. He just has stone hands…But he is a good blitzer and is involved in closed to everyplay. He needs to play small and tackle low and wrap. He can’t be coming in high and trying to truck people, he is way to little for that. There is no way he gets cut for JR Reed, Reed is out of position often and doesn’t tackle well from sideline to sideline. He only got those big hits last year because he ran in a straight line for that.
Also, Hunt is a bust, he’s slow, if we keep any one it will be Moates. (Sounds funny, but Moates can run, Why keep Hunt when Buck is better)?

We really only had 4 safeties last year … Dawk, Considine, Reed, Mikell we picked up Paschal from the practice squad in week 10 when Considine went on the IR … they only keep 4 … to crowded in other positions unless like I said before they think Demps can be a CB too and then they go light on CB.

Your probrably right
I remember Marcus Paschal coming up a few time, but it may have been because of Considines injuries. I don’t see how Reed makes the squad then. You can’t practice squad him, you cant cut Considine, he’ll get picked up somewhere else. If you cut Reed, he goes nowhere and you can resign him later if needed. Kinda like Dorsey Levens.

Unless they cut the FB's
and use Klecko or Cole in goalline situations… i know they “say” the klecko FB experiment is over, but i dont believe them. I’d bet we see him in there several times this year.
Which would be better than Cole… I dont think anything good ever happened with Cole played FB
