Jerome McDougle among 12 Eagles cut
It looks like Jerome McDougle's fairytale resurgence has ended, at least for now. McDougle was among 12 players the Eagles released today to get their roster to the 53 man limit. They also sent two player to IR.
Here are the cuts
Kyle Arrington (CB), Bam Childress (WR), Jed Collins (FB), Jason Davis(FB), Therrian Fontenot (CB), Michael Gasperson (WR), Nick Graham (CB), Jamal Jones (WR), Mike Marquardt (DT), Shaheer McBride (WR), Jerome McDougle (DE), Ryan Moats (RB), Marcus Paschal (S), Montae Reagor (DT), Montae Reagor (DT), Justin Roland (LB), Andy Studebaker (LB), Pago Togafau (LB), Kris Wilson (TE), Scott Young (G)
King Dunlap and Mike Gibson were both placed on IR, with seemingly fake/exaggerated injuries. That said, Dunlap has been carrying a high ankle sprain since Auburn's bowl game.
Surprised to see Scott Young lose his job since he did have a strong preseason. It's likely that rookie Mike McGylnn's versatiity(can play tackle, guard, and center) is what won out. It also means that Max Jean Gilles' knee injury from Thursday must be nothing.
It's a mild surprise to see Matt Schobel, Rocky Boiman, & Winston Justice make the team.
Tony Hunt is your starting fullback.
This could change even before the weekend is over... but for now here is your 2008 Philadelphia Eagles 53 man roster
Offense
QB (3) - McNabb, Kolb, Feeley
RB (3) - Westbrook, Buckhalter, Booker
FB (1) - Tony Hunt
WR (6) - Curtis, Brown, Jackson, Avant, Baskett, Lewis
TE (3) - Smith, Celek, Schobel
OL (9)- Runyan, Andrews, Jackson, Herremans, Thomas, Cole, Jean-Gilles, Justice, McGlynn
Defense
DE (6) - Cole, Parker, Smith, Clemons, Howard, Abiamiri
DT (4) - Patterson, Bunkley, Laws, Klecko
LB (6) - Gocong, Bradley, Gaither, Jordan, Mays, Boiman
S (5) - Dawkins, Mikell, Considine, Reed, Demps
CB (4) - Samuel, Brown, Sheppard, Hanson
ST (3) - Akers, Rocca, Dorenbos
25 offense, 25 defense, 3 special teams. Pretty much a balanced roster.

Rumors are fun
Aren’t they?
Had me pulling for Gasperson – I guess one 6’4 wideout is enough though…
Is he still eligible for the practice squad?

I’m personally disappointed to see Mcdougle, Gasperson and Studebaker go. I thought all three had something to bring to the table.
Would have rather seen Howard/Lewis/Boiman cut I think.

I’m guessing Studebaker will end up on the practice squad if he’s not picked up… and I doubt he will be.

McDougle got screwed
Why do they the pre-season game if performance doesn’t matter?
Dude deserved a roster spot.

Scott Young?
“Surprised to see Scott Young lose his job since he did have a strong preseason.”
You mean Scott Young, who held out of camp, was responsible for the loss against the Saints in the playoffs, and was being passed on the depth chart by rookies? You’re surprised?

Schobel
Why is he still on the team? So he can be inactive on gameday or so he can drop balls in the redzone?

I wonder if he makes it to opening day. If the eagles like someone who got cut today he could be first to go.

Dorenbos? Really?
Can’t they just train/demand Schobel to become the Long-Snapper? That would have freed up a spot to keep McDougle. Honestly for the salary that Schobel is making I think they can ask for more out of him than just a crappy backup.

I wanted to say the same thing. They couldn’t find a single position player who can also long snap? There is no doubt that position is crucial, but it seems like a waste to keep a guy who is only a long snapper.

Pissed bout McDougle.
I think it’s dangerous to cut a guy who knows our system so well and who was just showing his immense promise

wow.
big mistake bout McDougle, it will hurt when he signs with another team and rack up 7-9 sacks. what was the point if he had a solid preseason and then just cut him. lewis should have gone over M-Gasp. why do we still have considine, he sould have been cut to free up roster space
quick Question. what happen to franklin dunbar
What was that? A special team? Us? The Eagles?

5 safeties surprises me although I guess that means they feel comfortable moving Demps to CB if needed.

I was listening to Ray Didinger and Glen MacNow on Saturday. I believe it was Mike Mayock who called in and said his Eagles sources told him before the preseason that McDougle would not make the team. If that is true, then why even bother to bring him back? If it it true, it’s another example of Andy Reid’s stubbornness.
And heaven forbid they cut Greg Lewis. While, I actually don’t have a problem with Greg Lewis as a 4th WR, I think Gasperson would have been a better selection for this roster.
It will be interesting to see who they pick up from the players who have been cut. On WIP this morning, Steve Trevilese said that Brandon London who was cut by the Giants would be an interesting WR for the Eagles to pick up.

I am also a bit dissapointed that McDougle didn’t make it. I also thought that Studebaker was the better player between him and Boiman. But I guess they were looking for some experience at the very young LB position.

Fullback?
Bob Ford wrote that the Eagles don’t have a legitimate FB with Hunt as the only one at the position. Was Hunt that bad as a blocker in preseason? For years, I’ve wanted the Eagles to get a proven blocking fullback for BWest. He only needs a sliver to get through the line and a proven blocking back would make a huge difference.

Having just writen up my takes from Ford's column
This note made me reach for the Pro Football Prospectus to see what stats it had on the Birds and 2 back sets.
Turns that they are middle of the pack (17th @ 53% of plays) in running plays from a 1 back set. That doesn’t mean that the other 47% of the plays have 2 or more backs, just that slightly more than half of their plays have 1 back. When the birds do have more than 1 back in the backfield, they run the ball 49% of the time (28th in the NFL). So, blocking is a big part of the job, but how big does Big Red really see it to be?…

Stop crying
over McDougle. He had a good preseason against back-ups in the second half, how can you keep someone basebd on that ? He’s sucked his whole career in Philly, good decision cutting him. Studebaker will be a good player one day possibly, so I hope they get him on the practice squad. Very happy with that roster.

I hope he doesn't play as good as he looked for NY. Reports were that he was killing
Tra Thomas during pre-season. That is why I am upset at McDougle leaving. Because it may have an imediate impact against us.

Something must be up with him. There is no way JJ lets someone playing like McDougle did go without a reason. Everything we saw pointed towards him being on this roster that means there is something we didn’t see.

I think is just because Howard plays DT and DE, you get a 2 for 1, and save a roster spot
that you need to keep GLew, You need GLew due to the injury of Curtis now.
But even at that, there was no way we were keeping 7 DEs
